Beginning a deck project so I went to Shur-Way based on some positive reviews and was impressed by how well I was treated. The counter staff was friendly and helpful. Once I ordered my material, Navario Lopez who drove forklift, brought my material out, banded it and helped me arrange it on my ladder racks. I must say, the yard workers were all happy to help and Navario showed patience, safety and attitude that helped me get on my way. read more

This is only my second time stopping into Shurway, and as before I have found them friendly and helpful. This morning Phil helped me locate the shingles needed for a small roof repair project due to wind damage. Reasonable prices as well. Went into Shurway to buy a shed kit because their flyer online stated they have 5' wide swinging doors. After I purchased shed kit, I noticed the items on receipt were for a 4' door. I went back and showed them their flyer online with the shed kit with 5' doors and they told me the website was outdated and they go with 4' doors now. I expressed that 5' doors was the reason I wanted to buy this particular shed kit, so their solution was charging me extra for wood to build another door. (No big deal, I'll get my 5' door that I need) When the kit arrive, I built everything per the instructions, but when it came to the front and back wall, I had to go away from the instructions and customize the pieces I had for walls to align together. (Floor joists they sent me were not cut to size) Also, the header that was sent to me was for 4' door opening, not the 5' opening that I paid extra for. After all the walls were up, I went to put the trusses up and they were short. I called Sherway and the first thing they asked me is if I cut the floor joists down 3 inches. I told him "No I didn't, the instructions didn't say anything about cutting the floor joist." Fast forward, they forgot to cut the floor joists to size and made it seem like I was the one who messed up when I tried to exchange for new trusses. At the time, I didn't think anything of it when the first question they asked me was if cut the floor joist to size, but now I'm thinking this might have happened before. (The flyer even says the kit comes with pre-cut floor Joist.) I went in to Sherway the next day and I tried to exchange the truss I had for correct ones. An employee gave me 14 bolts, told me to take off the gusset plates, move the pieces to where they need to be and use those bolts to secure the pieces. I tried his recommendation and a few of the truss pieces split in half. I called back and talked to a manager about getting new trusses for my shed kit. He recommended me coming down there to pick up the wood and making my own truss templates. I told him I wasn't comfortable with making them myself, specially because I spent a lot of money on the kit already. He told me that they couldn't make it in house because all they had was Skil saw and they don't have the right tools to engineer them. When I asked him "How would you expect me to make it?" He tells me that I needed a Skil saw. All in all, the manager agreed to make the truss in house. Three day's later, the manager leaves me a message (Thursday 7/16) saying the truss should be done within a week. I called on Wednesday 7/22 and the manager said the truss would be done by Saturday 7/26. He said they would be delivered on Monday. Today is Monday and no calls or delivery from Shurway. I called and the manager and he said they still only have that one template they made cause they were busy. Terrible customer service for a mistake that was on their end. read more

I recently needed "shop" grade plywood to build some storage cabinets in my garage. Called several of the larger plywood suppliers in Portland and found that neither their prices nor their customer service seemed that great. The Shur-way in Vancouver was nearby, so I decided to visit them before making the drive to Portland. Really glad I did! They have a good selection of hardwood plywood, most available in 1/4", 1/2" and 3/4" sizes. Thanks to some great help from Phil, I ended up with beautiful pre-finished birch plywood for $40/sheet less than the competition charged! Though the plywood was labelled "shop" grade, there were surprisingly few flaws. The price seemed like a real bargain, so I ended up buying 9 sheets in a variety of thicknesses. Phil and Junior loaded everything in my truck and helped tie it down so I was headed back home in no time. I'll definitely be visiting Shur-way again in the future! read more

This is a small building materials store to be sure. But the level of knowledge and service compared to Home Depot is indescribable. And if you are judicious, their pricing is equal to the big box store. If you are looking for a building materials store that resembles a more community service oriented approach from a bygone day, this is your store. Good people. Well informed on product. They want to help you in any way they can in your project needs and you don't have to spend an hour searching for someone only to end up asking the window coverings person about a lumber question because HD under staffs their store. Saturday around 11am I called in my order for a planter box to be built. They say doubtfully done same day, probably Monday. I say ok, I work mon/tue but can pick up Wednesday (aka go ahead and put someone else's order ahead of mine if need be). They called three hours later- almost DONE! I spent the rest of my day staining and prepping the bed for veggies! Everyone I dealt with was so nice and helpful. Really had the family business feel. read more

We special ordered some lumber. When I arrived to pick it up, I said I needed 1 less board, so they charged me a 20% restocking fee for something that I hadn't even taken out of stock because I had already paid and there was nothing I could do about it. Then he took me out to a stack of warped boards sitting in the rain. I could see he was having trouble finding even a slightly decent selection of boards for me to take. They were all warped and cracked. He got what he thought were the best, but they were all awful. I had already paid for the order and could not afford to pay 20% restocking for it all and then buy from someone else, so was stuck with them. He was incredibly rude and patronizing. I called to speak with the manager several times and left messages. He never called me back. My suggestion is to NEVER buy from this place. Small and local is one thing. Rude and incompetent is another. The comment someone else made about how women are treated is spot on and they are way overpriced. You couldn't pay me to shop there. read more

I have been here several times, and I'm a bit baffled by the customer service. If I go with my husband the gentleman working are pleasant and helpful. However, if I go by myself I'm completely ignored. I'm not sure if it's because I look like I shouldn't be there? Very odd. I even stood in line at the counter waiting to get assistance with some lumbar that wasn't accessible to me. An elderly gentleman walked in and cut in front of me, it irritated me but I'm not one to make a big deal out of someone else's poor manners. Then another man walked in and the staff member at the counter greeted him and said he would be right with him. At this point I thought for sure I was invisible, so I looked back at the patron (who was just greeted) in bewilderment; he asked me if I was in line and I let him know I indeed was and my tone let the staff member know I was irritated. All of the sudden I got great service. I had finally popped on their radar as being a paying customer. Woohoo! I planned to chop this up to a one off.... Then it happened again. My next visit was more of the same. I couldn't find what I was looking for and no one could be bothered to help. I saw staff ask other customers how they were doing, if they needed help, and smile and say hello.... All perfectly acceptable customer service jargon. But none for Gretchen Wieners I guess. Their prices are great, and if your a man it seems like a great place to shop. I won't be returning, and I doubt they would notice anyway. read more

Oddly, we bought the same item as reviewed a year ago on 6-22-14: cedar, raised bed planters (2). They were well built, ready the next day and look great. Price on the high end though. Very helpful inside and got help outside loading. Thanks. read more
