I recently visited this cake and pastry shop and was pleasantly surprised…read more Pretty decent selection. A little something for everyone. There's a decent variety of cakes, pastries, and smaller treats, ranging from classic options to more unique/traditional flavors (I'm assuming filipino). The display cases were well organized with price tags clearly visible and the counters and seating areas were clean and tidy. The presentation of the pastries were also pretty neat and organized. As a matter of fact, the entire time I was eating my meal, my server was going around cleaning up various areas and restocking. I always appreciate a good worker and a clean environment. My server was also very helpful in describing the menu to me, and had greeted me with a smile upon entering. Thanks Kathleen! As for the bathroom, it was alright, but not exceptional. It was functional and had the essentials aka soap and a hand dryer, but it could benefit from some improvements. Urinal was completely out of order and toilet was a bit weak. I suggest implementing a paper towel system instead of the hand dryer. Much more sanitary that way. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by my visit. I left thinking I'd found a great "hole-in-the-wall" bakeshop, only to later find out that it's actually a fairly popular asian bakery chain! Wild. Definitely try it out.

I was tempted to pick up some packaged bakery treats, but held firm and only ordered the 2 halo-halo's for me and my husband. It wasn't a day to share. Lol. I liked how Red Ribbon had a Fresh Free Sample display for Choco Mousse for you to try! Nice! The cashier was friendly and served me with a smile. The halo- halo was not as sweet as I prefer, but it was still a tasty Filipino treat with the traditional fixings. My husband enjoyed his halo-halo but did mention it could have been creamier. Wondering now if it needed more evaporated milk. Hmmm? Nonetheless, halo-halo on a warm weather day hit the spot!

Hidden Gem for Sweet Tooths & Pup Parents!…read more We visited House of Marmalade as part of the Hampton Roads Passport Series, and I am so glad we did -- I don't think I would've discovered this little gem otherwise! The shop is small and cozy with no indoor seating, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in charm and incredible sweets. The bakery case was absolutely stunning -- full of beautifully made cookies, macarons, and more. We tried three macarons (espresso, almond, and salted caramel), and every single one was perfection -- fresh, flavorful, and just the right size and sweetness. We also grabbed a shortbread cookie, which was buttery and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. And let's not forget our pup! Lexi got a pumpkin cupcake with peanut butter icing, topped with a tiny bone-shaped treat -- not only adorable, but she devoured it. Definitely pup-approved! The staff was fantastic -- super friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. You can tell they care about their craft and their customers. Whether you're doing the Passport Tour or just looking for a place to grab something sweet, House of Marmalade is absolutely worth the stop. We'll definitely be back!

This tiny bakery did not disappoint and was better than expected and remembered from my childhood (Please just don't tell mom). The flavors were satisfying and took your tastebuds on a journey! So it took a few minutes before they greeted me. But they did eventually, and they were friendly. I looked around to see what they had. It was different whole cakes, cake slices, cookies, breads, coffee, cinnamon rolls, quiches, and etc. They are affiliated with the 17 hands coffee shop next door. They make the quiches and baked goods for them. The whole cakes looked pretty. They also had some fall flavors in desserts and coffee!! I did find it confusing that nothing had prices. I had to keep asking how much everything I was interested in was. The cake slices are about $7-8 per slice and the cookies were $3-4 depending on the flavor. I got a red velvet and a double chocolate cookie. They were both a good size and thick. They were ok. But nothing buttery or special stood out. The double chocolate was the better cookie out of the 2. The red velvet was a little bland. But looked appealing. I'd like to try their cakes in the future. I will say there were a few fruit flies lingering in the showcase which is why I chose the cookies. There's some outdoor seating. They only sell whole quiches here, but you can purchase individual slices next door, because they don't have the capability to heat them up there. I'd come back to try other things. Check them out!!

Maple pecan scone was tasty but I think the savory scones are just above all here. Onion Gouda and jalapeño are incredible.
