This definitely my absolute favorite sushi joint! It's a tiny restaurant tucked into a strip mall that serves great quality fish! A colleague and I frequently come here for lunch which offers all you can eat for $24. We've dined here for dinner and they have people pouring out the door. I highly recommend trying Abashiri. Abashiri is literally my favorite restaurant of all time because I could never get sick of their specialty rolls and sushi! I been going there for the past month, ever since restaurants started to open back up in Illinois. I want to say I been there about 10 times (seriously) this past month because I been continuously going with friends and family. Every time, I came to dine in, the owners and the chefs would greet you with a smile + welcome you with open arms. They would always keep their standard of serving good quality and the best tasting foods! I am never disappointed, but always satisfied after I eat their AYCE sushi. It's the best deal you could get because they offer a variety of specialty rolls, hand rolls, and appetizers. The AYCE prices are $19.95 for lunch and $24.95 for dinner. A total steal if you think about it for AYCE sushi! My personal favorite rolls are their infamous baked lobster roll, shrimp lobster roll, Louchi #1 roll, and super Philadelphia roll. For appetizers, I definitely recommend their spicy edamame, house-made crab rangoons (yes, it's made in the restaurant actually), and their gyoza. Giving it 3 stars because the Middle Aged woman who works there is extremely judgey and rude. If you get AYCE, she literally asks if you're SURE you want what you order and explains you'll be charged for any piece you leave. It's uncomfortable. The sushi is good though, good enough to get past the rude service. They bring out the sushi painfully slow, my husband and I believe this is to give yourself time to get full. The AYCE menu is expansive at $24.95 per person which is worth it if you enjoy nigiri, as we do. Although once you order some, if you go to order more she claims it actually isn't included in the AYCE and she gave you the first round as a favor. Fish is fresh, and wide selection of rolls but after you feel the wrath of the rude woman, you will cross this off as an option for awhile. Sushi quality was actually one of the better ones I've had and I wish I could've given them 5 stars. What they were lacking though was just the service. My boyfriend and I went there on a Wednesday night and it seemed busier. We waited 10 minutes which was fine and expected but they interrupted us when we asked if we could sit at the bar and they said "just wait!" What was really disappointing was that a table who sat after us were served sooner and they even had refills on their drinks when we couldn't even get the attention of the server for one refill or to get our menu or silverware. Maybe he was a returning customer, which is fine but we definitely felt ignored and neglected. We also noticed the server just leave our sushi order on all separate plates in front of us and we had no idea which roll was which when other places would serve rolls on two different plates to separate the orders. I just moved to Bloomingdale a short while ago from Chicago and fell in love with this place. The sushi is always fresh, excellently prepared, and the owners always remember our favorites-- they are truly lovely people, it's always so nice to see them and be delighted with the food and service. I must admit the sushi here is pretty good but the service is absolutely horrendous. I have been here 3 times because I love their all you can eat special but all three times the women serving us has been ridiculously rude and overbearing. The second time I was there, it was a party of seven adults. We ordered about 24 rolls. She came back to us and told us we ordered 36 and it was too much and that she would charge $1 per piece left. We told her its fine and to just keep it coming. She purposely brought us one roll at a time, telling us she's slowing service because we ordered too much. We were the only ones in the resturant at the time so its not because they were busy. Every time she bought us a plate she repeated that we ordered too much, that she would charge us and that we had 30 left (Which was obviously not true because we ordered less than that initially). Every. Single. Time. We were all so sick of her that we just told her to cancel the rest of the rolls and we left. This is an ALL YOU CAN EAT place last time I checked and 3 rolls a person is not excessive. All three times I went there she was like this. I ordered a few things based on awesome name alone - Godzilla Roll, Lion King Roll...and I LOVED them. This is the third sushi place I've been, and it ties for the #1 spot. $25 for the AYCE, and I was more than filled. Almost everything was fantastic with the sole exception of the NY Steak Roll...which I tried for the novelty of having steak in a roll, and it was ... well, steak in a roll. Nothing terribly great about that one, but everything else, from the Double Salmon Roll, to the Paradise Roll (sweet goodness that was great), was fantastic. Going back asap, no questions about it. Ohmygodsomuchsushi. From what I can gather, the best way to do Abashiri is the way we did it: With a group of 5 or 6 people, on a weeknight, everyone doing the All You Can Eat and sharing lots of rolls. AYCE includes miso (great for a cold rainy night) and green tea (good but there were no sugar packets on the table ... so I just drank it as-is) and lots of rolls. I'm having trouble remembering everything we ordered but I know it included: Ninja Roll (at least 3 of these) Hawaiian Roll Fire Roll Godzilla Roll Mexican Roll Lady Roll Mango & Tuna Lobster Roll ... and more, I think we ordered at least 15 or 16 rolls for 5 people. It got a little crazy. I will say that I was a bigger fan of the fresh rolls than the cooked ones -- the one deep-fried one seemed pretty odd to me -- and overall the ingredients seemed fresh and tasty and pretty well composed. We also were treated by our sashimi-eating cohort to some sake and some kind of shrimp-fish egg-quail egg bite that was surprisingly sweet and rich. The waitress was attentive and kept the food and tea coming, and offered advice on NOT ordering rice, because that would just fill us up and we wouldn't have room for more rolls. She did fail to ask one of the sushi-eating crew if she wanted change, but it was easily fixed. So: come here on a quiet weeknight with several friends who want to stuff themselves silly with sushi. Abashiri has easily earned five stars this time around. My husband and I went here on a Monday night for AYCE sushi. At $25/person and the awesome variety of sushi, it was well worth the 40-minute drive for us. My only hang-up about this place previously was the long wait between rolls. On a Monday night, there were a few occupied tables, and while the service was a tad slow, it felt faster since there were only two of us. We split six rolls and left stuffed. My favorites are still the Paradise, Godzilla, Mango Tuna, and Crunchy Rainbow. The Spicy Tuna was a little mushy, and the Mexican is too spicy with the amount of jalapeno and cilantro used, but my husband loves it. On my previous visit... Abashiri has all-you-can-eat sushi for $25/person, and that deal includes Friday nights! Sparks of yum were definitely flying as a group of 7 got together for Abashiri's AYCE sushi. Their AYCE menu consists of only maki and special maki rolls. Abashiri is definitely for the folks that love creative maki and cooked maki rolls. My personal sushi taste runs along the traditional (nigiri!), but I found their maki very flavorful. The flavors weren't just a mush of all kinds of ingredients, but seemed very well thought out and every ingredient complimented each other. Service was wonderful. The place is on the smaller side but even though we had a big group, service didn't suffer a bit. My tip is that if you want AYCE, get your whole group to order AYCE. Each of you should order 2 rolls and share away. Still not full? Order more rolls! Tea and miso soup is included in the very reasonable price ($25 bux). As soon as you walk in, you can see the walls filled with the photos of happy customers. The decor has a lot of traditional Japanese items, and it has a real home feel. "You want it all but you can't have it It's in your face but you can't grab it!" Well that certainly isn't true about Abashiri. Not only can you have it all, you can have as much as you want, and grab it all day long should you so desire. Tho, they may get sick of you after a few hours. All you can eat sushi, baby! You know what really sucks about watching your caloric intake? Not eating out as much as you like. Which in turn means less opportunity to try new places. I gave myself the night off of my tedious calculation of everything I put in my mouth to enjoy a night out with friends for some serious face-stuffage. You've gotta respect a place that is so confident in their product they don't even need to put their name on their sign. "SUSHI" is all it says, and that's what they do and do pretty well. Admittedly, my friends and I were a little hesitant coming here after reading a few iffy reviews and hearing a friend's not-so-great recounting of her experience. I am happy to report that my experience was more on the positive than what I'd heard. Fiscally speaking, it makes the most sense when you come here to do the all-you-can-eat deal. For about $25 you can stuff your talk hole with pretty much any (or every, if you desire) sushi roll on the menu and keep them coming til you explode like the pig that you are. I'm not going to detail everything that I ate. For that type of information see the wealth of other reviews. I will say that I agree with the reviewer who stated that the combinations of ingredients in all the rolls are well-thought-out and flavorful. I enjoyed almost everything we ordered, but I didn't contribute much to the choosing. I let my friends decide. The only one I didn't care for was the Mexican roll because it was too complicated and fall-aparty. With all the tomatoes and business cascading off the top, it's too hard to eat with chopsticks. Sidebar: I recently learned that when you share sushi with people, you're supposed to use the top, flat side of the chopsticks to take things from the shared dish and put them on your plate, then use the regular smaller, rounded part to eat with. Interesting, no? I never knew that. We didn't do that last night, just kinda mawed off the big plate because we're animals. Anyway, the way it works is you order off a card just like any sushi restaurant. But unlike most of the places I've been to, they deliver the rolls one at a time. This tends to get annoying for the people in the group who didn't order the AYCE special because they get their food all at once and are finished by the time your second or third shared roll appears. My poor non-sushi eating friends had to sit for almost an hour after they were done eating. Patient souls, they are. So, yeah! Try it. The food is good. The raw stuff isn't the freshest, but I dealt. Some of my friends noted the very fishy smell, which you know is kind of a sign of that. The cooked rolls are definitely the way to go here. And plan to stay at least two hours if you're with a large group that's all sharing. And if you don't want the AYCE, stay home or go somewhere else because you will get bored with the waiting. I loved this place from the start because it reminded me of the little mom-and-pop Japanese restaurants that my family and I used to go to all the time in Hawaii. Now that I'm here in Bloomingdale, well, options for any kind of quality eats run scarce. You know the feeling. Yes, YOU DO. It took me two years to finally get my yellow ass to Abashiri, but not for lack of trying. Luckily, relatives from the Rock were in town and I sprung at the chance to experience this joint. It's small, so claustrophobes beware. At least it's clean, so claustrophilic clean-freaks, come on down! It appears that Abashiri is actually owned by Japanese people, a weirdly refreshing change from all the Chinese-owned sushi bars in Chicagoland, which explains the more authentic feel and flavor. I pigged out because 1) a well-heeled relative was paying, 2) I hadn't had access to Japanese food for way too long, and 3) I figured I'd work it off later that evening. Whelp, that last one was a bust. Maybe tomorrow. I really enjoyed the salmon tempura roll, with its crunchy, flaky bits of salmon and a light drizzle of unagi sauce. No one else would touch my Mexican roll, a fun, punchy riff on a spicy tuna roll that featured the addition of cilantro and chopped jalapeno (seeds included). It made this heat-loving Korean happy, but I have never been so glad to have been prescribed ultra-strength omeprazole. The katsudon was perfect, but perfect, the sweet soy sauce dripping down from the egg-onion-fried pork cutlet raft onto the rice. And in spite of the bones that required the deft kind of chopstick usage that I've never managed to master, the salmon shioyaki ("salt-broiled") was the best I've ever had. Plus, if you're anything like my omnivorous grandpa, you'll crunch on the bones anyway and say they're good for your own bones. All that said, the sushi did not wow my socks off, and the rice was your standard domestic calrose rice - no super-polished short-grain koshihikari loveliness here - but the food was fresh, tasty and satisfying. You know you've made it in life if you're on the famous Wall-Of-patrons. The requirements are not well understood, and there is no exact formula to number of visits vs duration of being a regular. It comes down to whether or not you have what it takes to be photographed and placard on the wall for all people to bask in your glory. Speaking as one that often times damages my wallet through sushi consumption, Abashiri has quickly become my sushi place of choice. The all-you-can-eat-rolls deal obviously appealed to me. At first I was expecting that it would only apply to California rolls, spicy tuna rolls, and the like. Though those are available, they have a wide variety of rolls; fresh, cooked, and tempura. The one side of their menu has a picture of each roll offered, all available. Friends have told me that the dinner box combos and other offerings are equally tasty and just as fairly priced, though I've never been able to exercise enough self-control to forgo "the deal". Service has always been great. Very attentive and they will always greet you warmly once you walk through the door. I need to find out how I can get my picture up on one of the walls. My husband and I went to check out this place tonight. I happened to get an email from Yelp this morning about AYCE sushi and didn't realize there was a place so close to home. We walked in, not too many people, got seated right away with a friendly smile. After we got seated, the service did seem to lack a little. There were people who came in after us and got their drinks before we did. We also had never been there, so wanted to know which sushi was all you can eat, but it took a while for the waitress to come over to us, even though there weren't too many people. The reason I gave this place 4 stars was because when the food arrived, it was great! I can't even decide which roll I liked the most, they were all good! I go here about twice a month for the year I've lived in Bloomingdale. The only other place in the suburbs I prefer so far is Sushi House in Wheaton. Kyoto in Downers Grove & Abashiri are tied as my second place. The $24.95 all you can eat rolls weeknight dine in special is indeed a great deal if you are capable of putting a hurting on the maki. But my sushi partner (aka fiance) and I do better on the $23.00 weeknight carryout special: any 3 rolls plus a bonus California or spicy tuna roll. FYI...Spicy tuna: freakin' hot. Heavy jalapeno. I usually prefer fresh, plain rolls with minimal sauce, but I do appreciate cooked & tempura. But with this great deal, and with the Tower Roll's perfection, it's worth it to amp it up at Abashiri. FRESH rolls: the fish is always fresh Highlight....Lady Roll: Tuna, Salmon, Albacore, avocado, wrapped in soy paper. Light, fresh, experience the full flavor of the tuna & avocado unhampered by heavy sauces. TEMPURA: You won't be disappointed. They know what they are doing. Highlight...Chicago roll (aka Tower Roll) is unbelievable. Eel, spicy tuna, cream cheese, avocado, crab meat, with an asparagus stalk sticking out the top, deep fried, to resemble a fried, green Sears Tower. With hot sauce all over it. Cream cheese isn't my thing but this is a notable exception. COOKED: Highlight...They do the beloved Caterpillar quite well. Frankly, the only roll I ever remember not liking was the Baked Scallop Roll. The sauce & spice combination of the Baked Lobster roll had been much better SERVICE: I don't get that worked up about crappy service, but for those of you that do... once I was told I can pickup in 20 minutes. 25 minutes later I had to wait an additional 10 minutes. I absolutely love this place. The restaurant is a great place to eat out with friends and their all-you-can-eat deal can't be beat! I'm always greeted by the nice waitress here and I usually am able to sit wherever I want given the restaurant isn't crowded. The lighting is perfect and gives it a nice dinner feel. It's not extremely fancy, but definitely has your typical dinner restaurant feel to it. On the walls are the pictures of many people who, I assume, are people who go there a lot, almost like a wall of fame. A few pictures of some famous golfers, who've been to the restaurant have been there, are up there as well. The all you can eat is spectacular. It's only $25 and you can get almost any kind of sushi you want! The nigiri (fish on top of rice sushi) is off limits, but who cares? FREE FOR ALL ON THE ROLLS, I TELL YOU! Miso soup also comes with the meal, but the waitress had told me only if you request it. My friends and I go to this place very frequently, so the waitress knows us now. The waitress tends to poke fun at me and it makes me laugh every time. "You better finish that, or you'll have to pay for it" she'll say, every time I have only one roll left to go! When we're done eating, the bill is delivered immediately after we're all finished and it takes no time at all for her to run the payments. Our first stop after 4 hours of driving from East Lansing to the Chicago suburbs was Abashiri, referred to us by my foodie Chicagoan friends. We were so excited to take on the "all-you-can-eat sushi" deal. The restaurant was smaller than I expected, but very quaint. We arrived a little before prime lunch time, and seated ourselves at the table close to the sushi bar, but far enough to not be judged by the vast quantities of sushi we would be eating. The deal is that you can order as many sushi rolls, and maki rolls as you want, and as many times as you want, but you will have to finish all of what you order or else they will charge you extra on top of the $25/person pricing. I think $25/person is very reasonable pricing for how their "all-you-can-eat" sushi is set up. They give you the standard white sushi sheet that you can mark which rolls you want after conversing with your dining mates. After we arrived to a consensus on which rolls we wanted, we decided on a meager number of 11 rolls to start our sushi binge. The rolls were made fresh right in front of our eyes and this made us very giddy and hungrier. The lunch rush started to trickle in and we knew that we would be there for a while since there was only one sushi chef behind the bar. This was okay with us because we were on vacation and had some time to kill. The wait for the sushi was not too bad. We got our first 4 rolls in about 15 minutes, and then the remaining rolls staggered in 5 minute intervals. The next round we opted for 8 rolls. Every roll was great except the seared tuna roll which had an off-putting smoky taste and gasoline smell. All together we had 19 rolls. The last two rolls were not pictured since we were more focused on finishing the food than documenting the last two rolls that we could have done without. Oh the consequences of gluttony. We had combination plates and spicy tuna rolls and all were fresh tasting. Service was fine and friendly. Been that way every time I have visited. This place is always busy, both lunch and dinner. That is a good sign that they are doing something right. FYI: They have an all you can eat rolls special here. I am so glad that my friend knew about this place! This lil place is hidden in a parking lot pushed far away from the street and the sign is covered by trees if you're drivin' by quick. I love this place! It's always the little places that have the most amazing sushi. The first time i was there I had mainly cooked rolls which at the time I thought were the best. I just went there yesterday and discovered I definitely prefer their fresh rolls better. Don't get me wrong, the baked spicy salmon was definitely melt in your mouth worthy, but I'm a fresh, raw, salmon sushi nut! It's my fave. Their menu of rolls is awesome because not only is their a wide variety of rolls from fresh, cooked & tempura, but they have pictures of all of them too! Me & my friend split only 4 rolls but we could have definitely eaten a couple more. My problem is always over ordering, but this time I defo under ordered. I would highly recommend this place to eeeeeveryone!! They do have a lot of sweet lunch combo's, and all you can eat rolls for about $25 that I haven't done yet, but I should definitely check that out next time. read more

The buffet is reasonably priced and if you order rolls that don't total up to be more or the same as the buffet set price they charge you only for the rolls. Now that is fair. The waitress is always very nice and the sushi comes out very quickly. The food is always excellent and plentiful. The Las Vegas roll is absolutely delicious. I've gone here a few times over the past few years and I walk out being unimpressed. After today, I felt that it was time to right this place off. The service is good - they try hard but the sushi coming out of the back is disappointing. Cheapest roll was the best (spicy tuna) The others just weren't very flavorful. Good place for sushi! The waiter was attentive and friendly. They have an interesting ordering system - they give you the menu and a small ordering sheet. Once you've made your decision, you put the quantity you want against whichever menu item you want on the ordering sheet. This actually seems quite brilliant, as there is no room for misunderstood words (and with my Australian accent, I have found this to be a problem sometimes!), and it probably makes it easier for the waiters and chefs. We ordered two rolls (total of 11 slices) and one serve of nigiri (total of 2 pieces). Our rolls were: one tempura salmon and some vegetables on the inside (can't recall which), and fresh salmon on the outside; one California roll. Nigiri was the salmon nigiri. That was enough to fill us up! All items were delicious and seemed freshly prepared. There were only four other tables/9 other people in the restaurant, so it wasn't very noisy or busy; just a nice, relaxing, quick, nutritious and delicious meal. It cost us $24 (before tip) for two rolls and two pieces of nigiri. We will definitely be back! read more

This restaurant is convenient to my house, the people working here are very friendly and they have a surprisingly extensive menu of rolls; many I'd never seen before. For these reasons, I wanted to like the food more than I did. Some of the special rolls were just doused in sauce. To me that's against the principle of this type of food... the fish should be the star, not covered in mayonnaise. At any rate, I thought their spicy tuna (my favorite roll) was good. So, my recommendation if you're craving sushi in Bloomingdale, is it's worth going here but don't order the more fancy rolls, stick with the basics. read more

Ohhhhh lord, where do I start! Ok so first off, if you plan on going with more than 5 people, don't bother. They will look at you like your nuts for bringing people in. The waitress made it seem like a problem to accommodate 10 of us, even though there was plenty of room. Second, the waitress was extremely rude and made countless mistakes. A huge mistake was, one of our guests was allergic to cucumbers and she brought out a roll that had cucumber and when asked to make sure there was none she says "yes! No cucumber like you told me" well..... there was cucumber! When you work in the service industry and allergy can shit down your business! Thankfully she spit out the roll and didn't get much of a reaction from it, but definitely dangerous. That sad part is, the food is actually quite good. Ownership or management must change.
