My family has known Dolores for over ten years. We have fostered and adopted dogs from her rescue, and had the best experience. I have had several disappointing experiences with this organization. I completed an online application to adopt several of their dogs on two separate occasions. Most recently, I submitted an application to adopt a bonded pair! Both times, there was no response to my application. Recently, I emailed the organization to request an update on the status of my recent application - no response! I adopted two angels from AACSR 17 years ago, and I knew when I was ready, I would be right back here where I belong. AACSR were and still are my angels. We've adopted two dogs with them and fostered two. Actually, we started with fostering with them and adopted our third and fifth dogs. I've found them to be accurate with their behavioral assessments and suggesting which dogs are best suited for our home environment. They thoroughly assess the medical conditions and go out of their way to fix and heal each dog's condition so he/she can be in the best condition when they go to a forever home, saving the potential new family thousands of dollars in medical care. They also aim to alleviate the pain or discomfort of each dog as soon as possible. With the majority of dogs in their care being seniors (8+ years old), it's A LOT of ailments to manage, across dozens of dogs. AACSR shoulders hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in medical costs for the dogs they take in. They strongly prefer to keep dogs in foster homes, rather than board them, so the dogs can assimilate more quickly into a new home. It also helps reduce costs, so funds can be redirected into medical care. As a foster mom, I've personally driven 4 dogs to their medical appointments and supplied post-treatment information to the rescue and their vet. Three of our dogs came straight from Animal Control and we were their first experience after being abandoned or found. I gotta say, senior dogs are truly the best. Animal Control does a basic intake exam, which allows them to provide some info to the rescues so they can decide if they have the resources to take in the new dog. It sometimes takes severa days for the dog to be transferred to AACSR's care, even after they accept a dog from Animal Control. Sometimes the dog is taken to a foster home and sometimes it's taken straight to the vet. It's safe to say, they are overwhelmed! Please take this into consideration when you apply to foster or adopt. The organization is primarily managed and operated by one woman, with her own medical issues. She decides which dogs to receive from Animal Control and arranges transportation to the vet or a foster home. She arranges all their vet appointments, follow-ups, medications, and procedures. She's constantly seeking funds to pay for dogs' medical care (most of which comes from compounded years of neglect). She is supported by a few dedicated volunteers and funders. I appreciate that others have had different experiences in their attempts to adopt. All I can advise is, please be patient. Also diligent. Allow them to get to know you. While they need foster and forever homes, the overall care of the dog is first and foremost. Hopefully this gives you some "behind the scenes info" that encourages more patience and understanding into the workings of the rescue. Very disappointed on how me and my wife were treated We found a dog Mr Buttons that we fell in love with. Made the application out.then talked to one Volunter and gave them more information about our house . Then talked to the foster mom and everything was looking good . By the way we just lost our 4th cocker this past spring at 15 years old. Then my wife was asked if we would let the dog sleep in our bed. We told Delores ( In charge I believe) that we would talk about it and get back to her.We decided to to let him sleep in the bed with us. We called in 2 days at least 5 times yo tell them yes we would and left messages to call us back with our number. We also emailed them numerous times. Its been almost 3 weeks and we can't even get a response .That's no way to run a dog adoption agency. Very disappointed with them and if I could give zero stars I would read more

Our doggie was diagnosed with Cushings in 2016 and after almost 3 years with it, we helped guide her over the Rainbow Bridge last fall. We did everything we could to make sure she was happy, comfortable and in no pain. She was 14 when she past, in our arms, on her couch in her living room, assisted by a veterinarian. She left behind her sister, also 14, who became sad, quiet and lonesome. She'd never been alone since we brought them home as puppies. So we started our search after a few months of healing on all our parts (Doggie and human) to save another furkid and give them love. We saw a doggie that had come into the Abandoned Angels rescue after a hording situation and we fell in love with him. We put in the application, It was accepted, they called our vet and then we waited to get a call for the Virtual home visit. We had to push and push... constantly keep calling to get an appointment to do the visit. WEEKS later (After being told at one point we could come visit said dog that weekend and then getting no call back with a place/time) we do the virtual tour and they only saw our backyard (To make sure it was fenced) and the kitchen.... they stopped it right there and told us we were all set!... Um... ok... they didn't bother looking at the rest of our 2 story house? Then we wait... and wait... for that phone call they told us was coming about going to meet and greet with the dog we were interested in. Nothing... so we kept trying to call and message someone. Turns out they ended up calling our veterinarian twice questioning HER care of our doggie that had Cushings. We ended up talking to Dolores who admitted that she takes Cushings personally due to her own dogs... and then tells us that there is another possible adopter for the dog we have been interested in for the last two months and asks if we'd be interested in another. After discussing as a family we agreed and let them know we were interested... again.. nothing... till some time later when we receive a text with a picture of another female dog. We respond that we'd love to meet her. then... NOTHING... and nothing since then after constant messages... texts, emails, facebook messages to see what we had done wrong. It has been absolute HELL dealing with this rescue. Too many hands spoil the soup as they say. One person doesn't know what the other person is doing. No one response to your messages or calls. I myself am well educated in the animal field. I've worked at a Rescue myself and am certified as an animal advocate for the state of NY. We did everything right in this process but they dropped the ball multiple times and then insinuated that we (And our veterinarian) did not provide proper care for our Cushings dog. We were gutted... and ANGRY. We don't take our pets care lightly. They are our FAMILY and for them to question how we handled things (AND how our vet handled things) and then smilingly deny us a chance at adopting because of a personal opinion is terrible business practice. We hid nothing. We are an open book and we researched like crazy when she was first diagnosed. Our vet was always in constant contact with us encase of questions and worked with us to make sure we kept our dog happy and pain free. Money is never a factor when it comes to our pets. If they need it.. we'll do it. Its as simple as that. We are still raw from losing her. We miss her every single day and this accusation that we didn't care for her properly still does not sit well with us. If we hadn't mentioned that our dog has Cushings this wouldn't have been an issue. We have since found another rescue that had a precious little boy that needed help (He's special needs). they came to our house personally... they called our vet... we got to go visit him!! They were always available if we had questions and STILL are after the fact as we deal with his special needs. (He's is almost completely blind). He fit in right away and bonded instantly with our other doggie. It feels like it was always meant to be. And Still nothing from Abandoned Angels. I'm anti-Pet store... and i hate to badmouth a Pet Rescue.. but this particular rescue is a hot mess. I hope they figure things out, step up their game and leave personal feelings aside because the animals in their care need them to find homes. PS.... We were told at one point that if we (Or others) signed up to foster rather then adopt we'd have a higher chance for getting a dog because "Fosters get first pick" Just an FYI read more

I found an abused cocker with a wire around It's neck last month. The dog was covered in large dread lock type mats and stunk like a sewer. I found an emergency groomer, whom I paid $200 to come to my house at 9pm. She groomed the little guy until 1 in the morning. My partner and I also brought the dog to an emergency Vet in Brooklyn whom said the dog had no microchip but did not need emergency medical attention. Over the course of the next few days we emailed and called every shelter/rescue organization that we could find within the greater NYC area. Abandoned Angels responded right away and kept in touch over the next few days. They said they had room for him and we could bring him by that weekend. They were responsive, accommodating and they kept in touch after we left the dog with them. They let us know that he was successfully neutered and is now in a loving foster home with the potential for adoption. They even sent us a picture of the dog with his new family. I first met Dolores, the founder of AACSR, over a decade ago. In the years since, we've fostered, adopted, and eventually volunteered for her. Her commitment to rescue is unparalleled. In addition to young and healthy pups, Dolores takes in elderly, often sick dogs that other rescues turn away because they are more costly to rehab and less readily adoptable than is ideal. If she pulls a dog from the ACC who turns out to be quite ill, she does not simply euthanize the dog as many others would. She pulls out all the stops to give the dog a chance to recover and have a healthy, happy life. There are no surprises. We've never had a dog come with an undisclosed condition. If an issue arises (one AACSR senior foster had an owner moving overseas to a country with extended quarantine), she will take a dog back without complaint. Several years ago, we took in another foster for her who my dog could not tolerate for whatever reason He began to bully her :( Despite my best efforts, it just wasn't going to work out safely. Are the dogs on the web site really up for adoption? You are directed to consider a dog other than the dog you apply for. What is going on?? I applied to foster a dog through Abandoned Angeles. I have experience fostering dogs. I had two cocker spaniels of my own, one died in October and I was looking to foster. I spoke for about a month to Linda, who kept saying they had dogs coming in especially from Korea, but nothing every happened, never saw the dogs online or up for adoption, she was obviously just playing games, what games I don't know, but it wasn't nice. I finally adopted a dog from Growl Rescue, I filled out an application, told them the dog I was interested in and she called within days. Our 15 yr old. Cocker passed away suddenly...we were devastated. Since he was an adoption, from another source, we wanted to go that route again. We had always felt that not only had we saved him, but he saved us! Maxie was a great dog! In my research I came across Abandoned Angels and everything Just clicked from the very beginning. When I contacted them, they responded immediately. They were so compassionate as I told the story of Maxie and how much I missed him. We were still grieving for him. My house was so quiet . They were very honest about what his situation and background had been. And shared their observations re his behavior and personality perfectly. My experienced with Abandoned Angels was very frustrating. I saw and fell in love with one of the dogs on their site, Sherbert. I submitted an adoption application and was approved, and spoke to the rescue coordinator several times on the phone. They told me Sherbert was not available (no explanation), and told me that another dog would be a good fit. I read about the dog and was so excited to meet him. However the next time I called I was told he had been adopted by someone else. This kept happening--the owner would promise us a dog, we would get ready to go and meet/take the dog home, and then someone else would be given it. At one point we had actually managed to meet a dog, and were told we had to wait 5 days until he had seen a vet and groomer--the very next day he was listed as available on their website. Heartbreaking. Eventually I got sick of being jerked around and I applied with a different cocker rescue. Within three weeks I had applied, been interviewed, had a home inspection, and been approved to adopt the dog I fell in love with. He has been with me for almost a year now and is my best friend. Out of curiosity I checked on the website today and guess what--Sherbert is still "available." read more

This is the most wonderful rescue group I am aware of and I am aware of many. our angel, Gracie, was rescued and fostered by them prior to her placement with us. The group is staffed by a small group of volunteers who dedicate their time to finding the right home for the dogs. I have mentioned the group to many I meet on our walks. everyone I know has had a good experience with them. I recommend highly. the owner is passionate about the dogs and takes great care to be responsive to applications via her small team of volunteers. There are occasions where some technical issues affect the website as with any volunteer group. Abandoned Angeles rescues cocker spaniels. They ask for "foster homes" with all medical expenses for the foster dog paid for by the rescue organization. I had a foster and found that they would not pay for medical expenses needed by the foster dog I had. I ended up having to send the foster back to the organization as her medical needs were too much for me without support from Abandoned Angeles. All the expenses that I had paid for were finally reimbursed after so much trouble I would never deal with them again. read more
