We found second chance rescue through a friend, after our 10 year old puggy got attacked by 2 dogs and needed surgery we didn't know where to go because we went to 2 clinics prior and they couldn't do the surgery, the surgery he required was more than we could afford with a specialist and it was either that or amputation. After I sent the email to second chance rescue they replied to me right away eager to help. We were sent for X-rays the very next day and after that for his actual surgery. My boy finally got his surgery done and won't need amputation thanks to second chance. They helped us with our puggy Communication was incredible, they really care about all pets and I will donate here for as long as I can and tell everyone about second chance. NYC second Chance rescue helped me with stray cats in need and offered invaluable services. They also helped my friend that was very ill, to remove her two cats. It is a very caring organization and the focus truly is the animals in need and neglect. They are wonderful with people and always suggesting helpful solutions and tips. Shame on the people that expect a personal thank you for donations or criticize without having any idea how difficult rescue is, and particularly the type of desperate cases this rescue focuses on. It's mostly volunteers and it's a job that many people won't do because what you see is so upsetting and it's thankless. If you do something nice, like donate, do it for the animals you are saving, not for a pat on the back. Or maybe consider giving your time. And for the person that referenced the director's salary. You can barely eek by on that amount as a single person in NYC, let alone a family. read more

I can't say enough about this Rescue! They are awesome! They welcomed, with open arms, a dog that we were fighting to pull out of a shelter in Los Angeles. We couldn't find any fosters to take her and they already moved her in the back out of sight to the public. I knew at that point, that we were in a race with time. The only Rescue in Los Angeles that stepped up to get this precious dog out of the shelter was The Kris Kelly Foundation. She made a call to Second Chance and they were willing to take in this dog called Vanilla all the way from Los Angeles! Wow!! I can only imagine how shattered my heart would have been if they didn't step up! Thank you NYCSCR for loving Vanilla! I will support this rescue for life! read more

This supposed rescue has a bad habit of lying to the people who want to adopt out dogs or cats for that matter. The following is what I received back from a so called volunteer about their so called adoption policy. " To be candid as well, we have rules in place to keep our animals safe. We, like MANY other rescues, have an approved radius that we adopt out to. We like to keep our dogs in a certain radius to ensure we have access to them in case something were to happen (ie. an emergency, a return, medical care, etc). It is not an uncommon practice. Thank you for your interest. We recommend checking out local rescues or using a website like Petfinder to find dogs in your vicinity." the dog in question is a ten year old Shih Tzu senior female who was found along side of her deceased owner. As a result of this, the dog now resides in a kill sheltr with no hope or recourse of ever being adopoted out but to the local immediate area whihc is in effect a from of discrimantion. Even if the adoptive parent moves out of state they lost any legal recourse to re-claim the dog if the adoptiv person moves out of the eastern seaboard. This supposed rescue seems to have a huge issue in being professional or having any care towards or about any animal they recieve to adopt out. In fact, most 501 (c)'s are tax havens and the CEO's of said rescues rake in the money with no or little regard to getting the dogs to a good honet decent home. IF you are considering adopting from this rescue, DON'T! they have no regard for you the adopter or the dog that you wish to adopt out. These are the states that Second chance deems to beokay and if you just happen to be outside of that area, then you will most likely NOT be able to adopt. That IS a from of discrimantion and needs to be dealt with PDFQ. Pay close attention Second Chance, your volunteer just made you look like the shit pile you really are. read more

My parents and I both adopted dogs from second chance recently and they made the process super seamless and they truly care about the animals they care for. My adoption counselor went above and beyond for me and took multiple calls from me and took the time to help me find the best fit for me and the dog I was adopting. Let me explain the worst of it and then you can read up on the rest of the experience for yourself. The dog we adopted, we were NOT TOLD that she has Megaesophagus. What's that you say- Look it up. It is a bad degenerative life time ailment that they clearly knew about from the get go. I asked to see her in White Plains NY on Wednesday, I needed to have done so before 3pm that day. I was texted back that the person in charge only had availability after 3 that day. The next day we were all set to adopt a puppy up in P.A.. In wanting to see this dog, we scheduled an apt Thursday morning. It is an hour away drive to White Plains. 3 hours or more later in traffic we arrived. The GPS said turn left. We went in a narrow driveway into a industrial old building development. There were no signs. But I noted a picture painting of a dog on one of the buildings. That was it. I called my network person, who called their person. The woman I was to meet, was NOT There. A woman staff member came out and said we could move our car from the one parking spot available to the other end near the door. We did. They brought the dog down stairs and we saw her outside. She was ready to come in the car and go home. NO NO NO. We can not take her, we have to go on line, fill out forms, be interviewed, send videos etc. Ok, we drove home. But before so, I emphasized that I needed a healthy dog. After all the reviews and numerous different people I connected with - from all over different states, one for the application, one for the review, one for the Vet records, one for the microchip- apparently all the different fingers on all the different hands are not working together. Point in fact, The dog was microchipped twice. They had not even bothered to check before adding a new chip into her. So, you say, big deal, besides having two chips floating around in her - one still had the original owners in N.C. on it. It took me some behind the scenes work and cooperation of others to make sure they were properly updated to my information. The President of that chapter, brought the dog to us. Along with, the many times asked for Vet papers and a few cans of dog food. When I read the papers and sent a text image to the President saying, are you telling me you had me adopt a dog with ME, her reply was, that was a long time ago. Like, somehow that was an answer to the issue. The next day we brought her to my own Veterinarian. He asked, did they tell you this dog has this. NOPE. The dog is a great dog and beautiful. But in a body that has a situation that I should have know about and what I would be getting into. Of course they banked correctly that we would love this dog. How can we not. Too many BUTs here to say more. read more

Awful people! Went to adopt our dog at a location in a warehouse....all the animals there looked so sick and in immediate need of medical attention. We were told the dog had arthritis..no problem, we always adopt senior pets and many have health issues. What was not disclosed to us was the fact that it was so severe, the dog could barely stand. Yet, it must have been a lie, they bragged they took him for a 2 mile walk that morning! Again, ok, decided I would take him to our wonderful vet and do all I could to help him. It took four people to load him into our car. When we got home, we could not get him out. He bit me and I immediately called Jennifer Brooks. I called animal control because I could not just leave him in the car, I wanted him to come in and be fed, etc. The ACO WOULD NOT GET NEAR HIM . He was growling, showing teeth. The ACO asked my husband to follow him to the county shelter so he could get the long hook to take him out. They went there, the ACO took him in the shelter. This was a Sat. The rescue called me around 10:20am the next day to confirm my arm had no broken skin. They said they would pick up the dog. When I called to check on his welfare my calls were not returned. Subsequently, the rescue spread the lie that I had pushed the dog out of the car. THAT DID NOT HAPPEN. The ACO was a witness. I am the person who rescues all creatures...including bees and ants. I was so upset as I pride myself on my care for all of God's creatures. It's like they wanted to spread a lie about me for fear I would give them a bad review. BEWARE of these people! They are in it to take your $$$$. Check out a couple of other bad reviews, they misrepresent the health of their animals. read more
