This restaurant was easily one of the most outstanding culinary experiences I've had in New York City. The restaurant is small and quaint with a perfectly designed menu. This was an interesting concept in a restaurant. We tried it out since the reviews were so great! However, the food was pretty bland and overpriced for what we got. The waiter described the mafaldine to have a spicy red sauce, was not very flavorful at all. The lasagna was decent. Want a-bait-a my pizza? Seriously, the mushroom pizza at Abaita exceeded expectations. The Neapolitan wood-fire crust was thin and firm yet fluffy, and able to hold its toppings well. The tomato, mushroom and mozzarella cheese topping was delicious. The heirloom tomato salad with cucumbers and creamy bethel yogurt was super tasty and fresh. I highly recommend this indoor/outdoor East Midtown Kosher gem! The quality of food was terrific and fresh, staff was attentive, and the outdoor ambience was a rustic yet modern oasis with an almost beachy feel in a concrete jungle (inside was modern Mediterranean). I am not saying if you are celiac you can eat the pizza here BUT if you are like me and gluten sensitive, you may, like me, have found the answer to mediocre gluten free pizza....When I asked the chef why it was easy FOR ME to digest he explained that most pizza dough is rushed. Abaita is given care and time to calm down....WOW!!! It isnt gluten that is an issue, it is mistreated food that bothers me. Now, lets talk about my fav dish...The salmon....Absolutely divine. My friend loves the olives so much he wouldn't share them. Again I am not saying you can eat pizza here if you are celiac AND I still cant eat pasta that isnt gluten free but there is also MUCH to be had here that does not contain gluten at all. Unfortunately, I did not take a picture of my entree before I dove in, but it was wonderfully prepared (perfectly) and thoroughly enjoyable. My girlfriends and I stopped in after we were turned away from another restaurant for lack of reservations. I ordered a "real" dinner, while my girlfriends ordered pizza and hor d'oeuvres. I had a 7 oz. Wild halibut filet, served on top of eggplant scapece and accompanied by broccolini. We all enjoyed our orders thoroughly, but I felt like I won the competition for eating perfectly prepared, tasty AND healthful food!! I would definitely come back and order the same entree again, without hesitation, unless I really wanted to try something else. This is by far the best kosher restaurant I have ever eaten at. The food from start to finish was delicious, memorable, innovative and a burst of flavors and textures. The olive appetizer with labneh was so inventive and delicious that even as a non-olive eater I found a way to enjoy it. The salmon entree had a delicious celery root sauce and a healthy bok choy on the side. I think the A in Abaita stands for A PLUS! read more

I just came to Abaita for the first time! Place is new clean and beautiful.. Owner greets you with a smile we text and made reservations. She Text us 10 minutes before our schedule time of our dinner. We had the margarita pizza amazing all made Fresh. The Pasta was to die for! We had Spaghetti , Pasta and Rigatoni. We had a beautiful Sunday evening dinner here. Everything was delicious, the service was flawless, and the ambience is perfect. Menu is Italian - mostly pizzas and pastas. Pizzas come out quickly - bar pie size - thin crust but not as crispy as I prefer. Desserts are excellent - the cheesecake was a highlight. I have to say that the food here is top-notch; equivalent to the great Va Bene dairy restaurant that closed down a couple of years ago. The lasagna comes in a bowl and looks quite messy, because it does not layer like a traditional lasagna, but the taste is just great. Also had the mackerel fish, served with a polenta and red pepper sauce, and was really good. The fettuccini was delicious too. I really appreciated the apple cake as a dessert option. It is extremely rare to find a kosher restaurant that serves something that resembles a homemade cake as opposed to the typical commercial desserts. We ate outside in the enclosure, and it was fine. It's heated and fully enclosed. The only downside I would say is that the portions are small to moderate, but that's pretty typical. Also, the menu, while very tasty, is limited. I actually thought that my menu was the lunch menu, but the waiter said there is no difference for dinner service. The wait staff was very attentive; maybe too attentive. I think the waiter should wait to ask "is everything ok" until the customer swallows his food! read more

My review is about the HOSTESS. The food is actually AMAZING in this place. This is the reason I come back to this place. Its DELICIOUS. But the girl who stands at the door and assigns the tables to customers is very arrogant and obnoxious. I had reservations to this place for lunch. I have arrived to this place literately 20 minutes before my time. Upon entering the girl asked me whats my name and if I have a reservation. I told her my name and she looked in computer and couldn't find me, than again she asked for my name and kept looking and kept telling me I am not on the list. (3 times to ask my name and 3 times to look at the computer) at which point I just showed her the email with the reservation confirmation and all of sudden she somehow found me. Than she tells me... well you are early. I was a little puzzled.. cause the restaurant was 80% empty, plenty of tables that are available. She looked at me like I asked her to build a BURJ KALIFA building all by herself. She very HESITANTLY with no excitement or passion said follow me and gave a table. This is not the way to run a business. Any restaurant owner would want every table to be filled. Especially knowing that if I can eat and finish early than you can have another couple right after me. more people more money. Put this girl in the kitchen to wash dishes. Not the first time she gave this type of attitude, she can show her attitude to dishes. You need someone sweet and positive at the door, not someone who pushes customers away. Before starting this review I want to say the following: Food is incredible. This review has nothing to do with the food and everything to do with the service. I have been to Abaita 3 times. Each of these times I have experienced a sense of them rushing me out because the space is so tight and so many people are waiting. I also want to say that during each of these times the restaurant has been half full. How can this be you may ask ?!? Abaita thinks a reservation is as if God himself made it. Last night I witnessed a full family leave the restaurant without a table because someone called on the phone and placed a reservation for 7:30 and didn't show up until 7:50. In any other restaurant if you are 20 minutes late for a reservation the table is gone! When the family asked for the reservation policy they said 15 minutes max but when push came to shove they waited 20 minutes. This is the reason that the restaurant is always jam packed with waiting guests, waitresses that rush you out, and a half empty restaurant. It makes no sense and if they were smart they would have a 5-10 minute reservation policy. Last night my wife and i came into a half full restaurant and the only seat available was next to the front door and an upset waiting family. When we asked to sit in one of the many available seats, we were told they were all reserved (this was at 7:45). I left and went to Barnea Bistro which was incredible and I directed the family who left with me to the same location. It is sad to see a restaurant who will leave a table vacant for 30-45 minutes for one reservation since they won't sit anyone there for who knows how long before the reservation and will hold it for 15-20 past. If they were smart they will take this advice and not accept reservations. read more

Came by on a Thursday evening and it was fairly busy. We didn't had to wait much for a table for 6. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. The watermelon sangria was very good, paired well with the artichoke pizza I got. The pizza was slightly larger than a personal pan and traditional Italian thin crust but depending on how hungry you are, it would be enough. The prices were a bit high, the pizza was about $25. So I'd say a meal for one would cost about average $40. Essentially it's a vegetarian spot. It's worth at least a try if you want to explore. read more

Great service, but pricy, and some complain of small portions, but I'm a huge fan and would even bring my in-laws! Have been here about ten times over the summer (once four times in a single week!). This is pretty expensive - for two with dessert, one pizza, and two pastas or salads and an appetizer with tax and tip will be around $120. FYI. Reservations are best made about a week and half in advance, or else you risk eating lunch at 230 pm or dinner at 8 pm and eating at the chef's counter, which can get hot during the summer as it is on top of the kitchen. This place gets hot during the summer, and management ought to work on this, or at least bring out ice without me having to ask for it! The greeter/girl who answered the phone is very sweet - even under pressure! Management: KEEP HER! Other waitresses could be a little friendlier. Chef (co-owner) is nice. When I was watching him closely, he asked me if I was considering a career change. Ha. Sometimes the owner will answer the phone and she was also cordial, so staff is overall 4.5/5. I've tried it all, so I'll give a menu rundown (note that they do change the menu from time to time): APPETIZERS Heirloom Tomato Salad: decent, sweet salad, though I prefer the sweet beet salad, though not sure they still have on menu CRUDO Yellowfin Tuna: decent both times I had it; nice amount of fish PASTA Rigatoni: this is your classic tomato and cheese and some milk/more cheese-3/5, would try something else for this price, so skip Spaghetti : see comment above-very similar, I think - classic stuff you can make at home Note the changed menu, but they had a wonderful pesto pasta. PIZZA The menu says served with chilli-this is a small one ounce container of spicy peppers with oil-delicious. Note that they will give you more cheese if you want. Some of my company have complained of too little cheese on the pizza, so I'd mention that if you love cheese. Margherita: their classic-get this! This was my go to, despite trying many of their other types. Picante: white pizza-not sure that kids will like this. Worth a try if you're not paying lol. 3.8/5 rating. FISH Wood Oven Roasted Halibut: Probably the best fish I've ever tatsted! The eggplant Scapece is cooked perfectly, and this comes on a small amount of barley, which I like. NOTE: pretty small portion for a $39 entree, but 100% worth it, as I can never make such a dish at home. Crispy Salmon: decent, but i can make this at home, so not a huge fan. others that I went with LOVED IT. Personally, I'd go for the Halibut. Whole Sea Bream: The fish was amazing, but I didn't like the salad it was on. SWEET Mandarin Curd: the only dessert from the current (October 2019) menu I've tried. AMAZING! very sweet. Coconut on top. NO way I can make this myself. So good with a capuchino! read more

ABAITA SUBJECTS NEIGHBORS TO SONIC ABUSE. We live in the apartment building next to Abaita. There is an exhaust fan on the exterior of the building facing ours which makes a high pitched screeching sound that is loud as hell. We, along with many others on our side of the building, have heard this horrid noise as late as 2 AM, interrupting our sleep, and then again in the morning. This problem has persisted intermittently throughout the last year. The owner is well aware of the problem, and has repeatedly said he will do something about it to remedy it permanently, but has only ever patched up the problem, so it persists. It seriously affects our quality of life as the noise is so loud it's audible in winter with all the windows closed. I work at home and the noise makes it impossible to concentrate. I would not normally resort to a Yelp post to air such a grievance but we in the building have tried all other avenues over the past year - months and months of being patient as we were promised a solution. Yet here we are. I can not comment on the food because I refuse to eat at a place where the owners have so little respect and empathy for other human beings. read more

We had an amazing experience today. Their outdoor dining setup is safe, warm, and comfortable - what more can you ask for! The pizzas were HUGE and delicious. I got the margherita pizza, which was a perfect version of the classic. My husband got the pizza with shishito pepper and walnuts which was such an interesting, delicious, salty flavor combination. They also offer takeaway pizza kits so you can make it yourself at home, which is a fun pandemic project. Overall I'm so glad we came! My only regret was not getting a cappuccino to go with the pizza, because the table next to us had some and it smelled delicious. read more

Monday night dinner with my daughter was spectacular, my best dinner out of the year. Our server Eva was terrific, gracious, attentive, friendly and very communicative and clear with her charming Euro accent. The only thing we had that was less than spectacular were the cod croquettes (4 small tubular ones on the appetizer plate), slightly mealy but delicious with an excellent crunch crust over (not quite enough) pickled chinese cabbage and delicious cumin aioli that completely made up for the mealiness after we asked for extra aioli in which to dunk the croquettes. Now, the two wood-burning oven fired entrees we had will unfortunately fall under the brand new idiot City Council ban on such ovens - hopefully, now being litigated, it will be found to be unconstitutional. The salmon was spectacular, with a perfectly seared crispy skin side up preparation and moist, tender flesh over celery root puree and baby bokchoi with parsley oil. Wow, the best ever salmon, really, and I've had great ones! Likewise, the unusual and superb lasagna, with homemade pasta, ever so gently charred (that oven!), slow cooked tomato sauce perfectly seasoned with bechamel and parmigiano. First of all it's a lil confusing to enter because there are two doors, and one goes straight into the kitchen! Food was excellent. We had fried olives, root vegetable soup, and mushroom soup.
