I'm reviewing paid estimates services not actual work completed as we choose not to hire services at this time. Alvaro Becerra is very knowledgeable and I don't doubt his arborist credentials. First, I want you to know to get an estimate/diagnosis it will cost $150.00. I misunderstood this so I am basically writing this review for the sole purpose of letting you know this cost. There are a lot of other companies out there that will give you a free estimate and I definitely regret not further questioning this on the phone. When, I questioned the rate when he came out he said it was listed on Yelp so I went looking to for it afterwards and still haven't found it, thus this review so you will also clearly know now. You will definitely want to be present which they encourage so you can glean information that Alvaro shares about your yard. He also does pH of the soil, but this doesn't mean much to me since I am not an Arborist. Pictured is the fine print at the end of the estimate/contract that you will want to read as it requires some extra work on your part after hiring services. This is an updated review as of April 16, 2020: I like to go out on trips around the neighborhood to look at how beautiful all of the yards are with the recent rain we had here in Bakersfield, but I would have to say, I think mine surpasses any I've seen due to Alvaro's care. About a month ago, he and his experienced crew fertilized, treated my citrus trees and redwoods, and spread redwood mulch and compost all around in both yards. The result, coupled with the rain, has produced spectacular blooming azaleas and camellias everywhere. Again, just like about this same time last year, my yard is like a park fit for Sunset Magazine! This has all been a process, but the amazing rewards are worth it. I am very pleased with all that Alvaro has done to help me love being out in my yard, especially now that we are quarantined at home because of COVID 19. I used AB Tree Doctor, in my yard recently, the results have been simply amazing. Alvaro and his crew started by doing a thorough renovation of my lawn. The soil in my own neighborhood is pretty tough and these guys fractured the hard-packed soil, aerated the lawn, fixed and reset all of my sprinklers (including a few broken sprinkler lines that were damaged by tree roots), and reseeded the lawn with winter rye, and then came back and fertilized it once it started growing. It looks like a brand-new lawn. It's lush, green, and healthy! Then they started working on my trees, treating them with injections (they found some serious health concerns on several), added oxygen pipes around the bases of each tree, and then today came back and trimmed all of them so that this next spring those, too, will look lush, green, and healthy. But one of the things I really appreciated about AB Tree, aside from their obvious experience with solving problems in the yard, is that hey asked me to get access to the various yards around me ... including the street behind us. They didn't want to leave any errant branches behind in their yards either. It's a nice touch that I haven't seen before and allows me to be a good neighbor, as well. My wife commented that she really appreciated the way that they thoroughly cleaned up our yard too. We hired AB tree Doctor to help with olive trees that were over pruned - this was last September. We got a hard pitch that our one year old lawn was in impacted soil and that we needed to have it aerated right away. They were expensive, but I was in full belief of the advice given. Then I was pitched hiring them for monthly lawn service, and I signed up for that too, but I had to liinto a 1-year contract. In the spring, the lawn was not growing back in. I research on line - guess what- October is not when you should aerate. This should be done in the spring. His solution- throw fertilizer. Not much help. The aeration left the ground uneven, and when mowed there are thick patches 2" high and other areas that are buzzed to dirt. And for a month they didn't even edge. Lots of hand waiving as to what I could do to fix their mistakes. After posting this review, I was pleasantly surprised to receive a partial refund from AB Tree Doctor and was told I could end my lawn service contract at no penalty. For sick trees, he is worth the money, but not for lawn service of any kind. read more

I was more concerned about the evergreen but he wanted to focus on the Chinese Elm which was almost 40 foot tall and gave me an estimate of $3000 to clean it. He had no interest in my insect infested evergreen. I told him several times I wanted an arborist certified by the state to tell me what was wrong with my tree. I asked him repeatedly if he was an arborist and he continued to tell me he was. Finally I asked him directly was he a state certified arborist. He told me an arborist is somebody that cuts trees and look at it while they're cutting the tree. I have the conversation recorded as I have cameras throughout my property. I told him I wanted my $165 back for his visit as he was not an arborist and I would report him. He gave me my money back. I was dealing with him for two days concerning my 29 years old plus oak tree that Southern California Edison had chopped off the top half of the tree making it lopsided. Last year I was in search of someone to put grass down on both the front and backyard. I searched through Yelp and other avenues, not too many responded or had an urgency. Alvaro Becerra & Associates reached out and set up some time during the evening on a weekday. He arrived around 7:00pm if I'm not mistaken and it was just after sunset so it was a little hard to see but Alvaro still managed to conduct his measurements of both yards. After further discussion and providing him with the vision I had for my yard which is basic, grass, sprinkler repair and nothing else, he stated he wouldn't be able to provide a quote unless he investigated the issue with the sprinkler system. I stated I may not repair and water my yard like my father did in the good old days, he then stated that is not how he does his work, he wants to do it complete or not at all and that no one would purchase a house with a broken sprinkler system. Well I was a bit offended because I purchased this home knowing the sprinkler system required repair, however I moved forward with the appointment to investigate the sprinkler issue which was the next day. Alvaro arrived the next day about 20 minutes late and I provided him with the payment in cash for this investigation, I again tried to get him to provide a quote without the repair but he remained firm. He did refund me $20 of the investigation fee because he felt bad he was late. After an hour or so he provided the quote, I will say that I was shocked by the amount, I let him know that I would need to discuss with my wife because it was well above our budget we had set and I advised him on my budget upon the first meeting. We decided not to move forward with Alvaro Becerra & Associates, we did find an independent contractor who did it for 75% less than the quote proposed by Alvaro. Although the amount was definitely higher, something else made the ultimate decision for me to decline his services. During our first meeting we discussed my yard quite a bit, towards the end of our conversation he brought religion into the mix, I am a private person who does not like conversations like that with someone who I don't know personally. I think it is unprofessional that he tried mixing religion and his visions with his landscape services, at least that is my opinion. For that particular reason I am rating the customer service at a 1 Star unfortunately, he seems to know his stuff but I am not okay with this manner. read more

Worst ever hired in 16 years. I ended up hiring a grass cutter that I could've paid to a 12 year old up the street for $10 a week ($40/mo). The guy broke two sprinklers on separate weeks which I had to fix because he didn't have parts. At least twice he smelled of alcohol and when told to trim the overgrown bushes, he said, "Yes, next week." When I told him they look terrible today... He didn't seem to care. I let the owner know and he said the guy didn't have a right to negotiate an $80 fee for lawn AND bushes. The owner said he normally charges $80 just for lawn and would negotiate personally after covid lockdown. Allowed abtree to continue for 3 more weeks and bushes hadn't been touched in a month and a half during the spring growing season. Fired him on the spot when he again said, "Next week". I hired a real gardner the next week,$30 less and doing a far better job. I used to be a greens keeper so I know the posers. read more

So I recently moved into a new home and had brand new landscaping done. Our initial intent was to do drought resistant landscaping to minimize the maintenance and costs, especially in the summer time. After about 2 months, which was the start of fall, I started noticing some of our plants and tree's didn't look so great so I looked around on Yelp for a few guys to come and check it out. Not only was Alvaro the first one to respond to my request, he also was the most honest and most reasonable when it came to costs. So I decided to give him a chance and I will tell you I am not disappointed in what he has done for my landscaping and trees. To start with, we had some issues with our trees (dying, looking sick, not properly pruned/cared for). Not only has he revitalized all of our trees, he's actually replaced a few of them that weren't looking too hot either. He even was able to help us pick out some fruit trees (wife loves guava's) that would be appropriate for our landscaping. Our plants weren't looking too great either until he started caring for them. He did suggest an upgrade to help with maintenance and upkeep. Initially I had some reservations due to the cost of the system but decided to go with my gut and say yes because he hasn't been wrong so far. In about 1 month from the upgrade being completed, I can definitely say there is a huge difference in the quality of our plants and trees. What I appreciate the most about Alvaro is he is honest. He doesn't sugar coat the bad news and doesn't try to up-charge me on services/upgrades. He is also very reliable and responsive if I have questions. I don't think I have waited longer than 24 hours after texting him to get a response. He is also always asking if there is anything extra he is able to provide us and if we are happy with the services he has provided, which to shows he cares about the quality of work his business provides. We had two very large Canary Palms and a few Queen Palms starting to raise the deck around our backyard pool and deck. Alvaro and his team efficiently removed the trees, and ground the stumps. In addition, we had 3 large Italian Cypress trees removed, and an ornamental plum and camphor tree trimmed. We recently purchased a home where the backyard was all overgrown, there were weeds and bald patches all over the grass, and the sprinkler system was not working properly. Great service! I called for a leak I suspected was coming from a broken pipe. They were able to come out right away and not only fixed that leak, but found two more leaks. Had me verify the necessary repairs and then showed me the fixes before covering up the pipes. While the system was running he adjusted several of my sprinklers. I will call again.
