We arrived to check in and discovered that the lobby was under construction. No problem. They had set up a temporary check-in area, and somehow still managed to offer free coffee and freshly made cookies while our friendly front desk clerk checked us in and gave us our key. Considering they were working around a renovation, the temporary arrangement worked surprisingly well.
Our third-floor king room was spacious, with a large window and vaulted ceiling that made the room feel even bigger. After looking around for a minute, though, we realized part of that open feeling came from the absence of the usual dresser. Instead, there was a small table, mini refrigerator with a microwave on top, and a single-cup coffee maker. A large wall-mounted TV faced the bed, and there were two small bedside tables with reading lamps.
The king bed itself was soft and comfortable, but the lighting was probably our biggest complaint. The bedside lamps have limited movement and mostly point downward. At night, the only other significant bedroom light came from the entryway near the bathroom, which did very little to illuminate such a large room. Ironically, step into the bathroom and you are greeted by a huge mirror surrounded by bright lighting. If I could have switched the lighting between the two rooms, I probably would have.
The bathroom itself was clean and nicely updated. Shower pressure was great, and the showerhead was mounted high enough that a taller person does not have to duck underneath it. There was also a hair dryer provided, something we have noticed some less-expensive motels have eliminated. The wall air-conditioning unit kept the room comfortable throughout the night.
Breakfast the next morning was considerably more than coffee and a packaged pastry. There were scrambled eggs, sausage, waffles, fresh fruit, yogurt, bagels, Danish pastries and dry cereal, along with milk, orange juice, apple juice and coffee. The breakfast room was clean and orderly, and an employee was actively keeping an eye on things and restocking the food rather than simply putting breakfast out and disappearing.
We understood when we booked that improvements were being made to the property, and the temporary construction situation really did not detract from our stay. In fact, seeing the renovation underway makes me curious what the finished property will look like.
The bedroom lighting could definitely use some improvement, but otherwise we had a comfortable stay, enjoyed the breakfast, and found the staff friendly.
We'll be back--and hopefully next time we'll get to see the completed improvements.
