Brought in early on Friday morning, they ordered the part and gave me an 1100 (roughly) dollar estimate. Cam shaft sensors are not easy to get to, btw. They got the part in, got it fixed before the end of the day, and my bill was ~850 bucks. They didn't need to replace one of the sensors, and said to me, why spend the money if you don't need to. Respect that. If you get there early, you can generally wait a short time for simple stuff like oil change or junk. I just drop it off and pick it up after work. Muuuuuuccccccchhhhhh better than going corporate or dealer, by far!

I phoned to describe the issue with my car. The manager told me to shut the engine off, wait a minute, and restart it. I did, and it didn't work. He then said I'd need to have it towed in. I responded "Oh, okay" -- in a completely normal tone -- and he became rude and hung up on me. I'm not sure what I said to provoke that. Nothing, as far as I can tell. But if a neutral response to bad news is enough to end a phone call, I don't trust this shop to communicate honestly about a repair I can't verify myself. That's the whole basis of the relationship between a customer and a mechanic. I'll be taking my cars elsewhere.

Recently, I had another terrible experience that confirmed I will never return. Three years ago, I paid Tao Auto to replace my timing belt and water pump for the first time. My truck had 322,000 miles at the time. Fast forward to NOW: my truck started making strange noises, so I took it to nearby mechanic. They told me the water pump was leaking and the timing belt needed replacing. So I had my truck towed to my regular mechanic, who said the same thing--and even noted the parts looked like original factory components. That's shocking because I paid Tao Auto for this exact job three years ago! My truck now has 356,000 miles, meaning only about 25,000 miles since the repair. Major repairs like this typically come with an 80,000-mile warranty, so I called Tao Auto. The manager was unbelievably rude and dismissive, repeating that the warranty was only 12 months and insisting they used "good parts." No accountability, no willingness to even inspect the vehicle, nothing. As a paying customer, this is unacceptable. It makes me question whether the work was ever done properly--or done at all. This shop clearly does not value honesty or customer service. The manager's attitude and honesty is the reason my first visit was horrible, and it's the reason I'll never go back. If you care about your vehicle and your money, stay far away from Tao Auto.

I read the glowing reviews of Choice Auto Care on Yelp, and elsewhere, and decided to give them a shot. I am glad I did. Don was quick to get me in, and then out, and the job was done right - and VERY timely. He reminded me of my long-time mechanic from when I lived in South Florida. In fact, the two could almost be twins. It's a little further in distance than I usually go - in fact, I can walk to my 'regular' guy - but I highly suggest Don and the staff at CAC. It is never enjoyable having to get certain repairs done, but if you are going to spend hundreds of dollars for a fix, it's nice to know places exist that will do the job right, and not screw you over trying to upsell and still give great customer service. If you're in the North Raleigh area, definitely give them a call!
