Twice the cost - half the flavor. I really wanted to enjoy the food... really. I don't like giving bad reviews - as I know people are working hard... but I think people should know what they can expect when they shell out their own hard earned money. Unfortunately, I must say that this was the most expensive yet bland Chinese meal that I have had in quite some time... maybe ever. Seriously, $40-50 per entree?!?! We had spring rolls to start - they were okay at $8 for two. We then ordered the Sichuan shredded pork (medium) and the red chili shrimp. They were okay, but not for the price they charge. And... we basically were finished with the pork dish by the time the shrimp dish came out. I then ordered the salt & pepper tofu hoping for a decent dish - but I think this was the worst dish of the three. No salt, minimum pepper, and beer battered tofu. Ugh! We were in Vermont for 4 days and this was hands down the best meal we ate while in town. I wish it was our first night so we could be chowing on leftovers all 4 days! The restaurant ambiance is exactly what you'd want for a classic Asian place. Slightly old, yet styled in the perfect decor. Many maroons and tans, deep wood tables, all with lazy Susan's for the best family style dining. The service was fabulous. Our waitress was knowledgeable about each dish and recommended many options to us, all were delicious. We definitely got way way more food than we needed, but it allowed us to try so many dishes! Everything was fabulous. I'd be dining here weekly if we lived in town. Cocktails were tasty and fun to order based on the authentic nature of each one. So disheartening to see this restaurant's food quality suffer. We've enjoyed many meals here over the past 10 years and this last one was our final. I completely understand inflation, and I'm ok with spending $44 on an entree, but when everything is so brutally over-salted to the point t it is inedible, it's a real bummer. We ordered 4 entrees and a starter, after 20% gratuity it was $180. That would have been fine if the quality of food was the same it's always been: but it was not. Also: 4 entrees and a single quart of rice... laughable. The staff was pleasant. And maybe it was a bad night. I get the Buddha's beef and it is one of my favorite dishes. I always visit this restaurant when back in Burlington. Service is always good, though I find it most helpful when staff ask how someone wants something prepared vs. Assuming we want the average /less amount of spice than would be typically prepared with. There is something on the menu for everyone here. Food is served as it is ready vs all at once. This food is much nicer than fast food Chinese but I do not know enough to know if it does traditional Chinese food justice. Relaxing setting. read more

Recommended by a friend and our first visit. We ordered the tasting menu and a pot of sake. Very delicious but brought home a lot of food. It was a great way to learn the menu but now I know my favorites and would stick with those for a better value. I probably wouldn't have tried sesame beef made with seitan but so glad it was part of the tasting because it was crazy good and now I'll definitely get it again. Their sauces really take the dishes to the next level even on simple dishes like spring rolls and dumplings, the sauce took it over the top. Service was amazing. Many servers kept bringing food, clearing the table, filling water and asking about the food. Ambiance was upscale. I've read some mediocre reviews on yelp and I'll say it depends on what you order. The setting is Burlington quirky! It's a converted house with a few separate rooms and if stairs are a problem this might not be the place for you. The service was attentive and I have no complaints. The food comes out when it's ready and there is a handy lazy susan top on the table to access the food choices. The green beans were excellent as well as the dumplings and pork we had. Yelp seems torn about whether A Single Pebble is the greatest restaurant in Burlington or actually quite terrible. I am here to tell you that they are both wrong: it is a heaping pile of mediocrity . To be clear, nothing we got was terrible. It was all different kinds of average. The general tso's cauliflower was too breaded and the sauce was like every other general tso you've had. But it was fine and I ate it. The chicken fried rice was really bland and we mostly left it alone. The chicken dumplings were the saddest thing we ate: mushy, bland and small. The lo mein was the most flavorful thing we had. Like some of you, I read the gushing reviews here and elsewhere and found myself asking if these people have ever eaten Chinese food before. Hell, the couple next to us was doing backflips over their food, ooh'ing and ahh'ing with every forgettable bite. I didn't ask them, but I'm fairly certain they would give Panda Express a Michelin star. If you've had great Chinese food before, don't go here. If you are blown away by a poor man's PF Chang's, you've come to the right place. read more

Great food, hit or miss service, and is now wildly overpriced with smaller portions than they've had previously. (It's more a 3.5 than 4 star) I've been going here for over 20 years and appreciate their wide selection of vegetarian and vegan options (Salt and Pepper tofu and Buddha Beef are top choices ) but wow have the prices escalated with some dishes doubling in cost in the past few years. I know prices have gone up everywhere but this is out of line, especially given that some portions have shrunk. Service is usually good with multiple servers keeping an eye on the table but I recently sat for 15 min with empty cocktail and water glasses. Overall servers were not nearly as attentive as they should be for a premium restaurant and had been previously. The food is good but has not evolved in years. Ate here about a month ago and somehow forgot to write a review about the most incredible experience I've had in a restaurant and for over two years. I believe our servers name was Josh, who lend us on a journey through food and drink. He was lively in every way! We popped in after a last minute road trip from Saratoga, and we able to snatch a two - top bar seat without a reservation. We were greeted warmly, which was nice despite no reservation and being in hiking boots. My partner and I did the vegetarian tasting menu (I'm vegan, he's not) and wow wow wow was it worth every penny. I won't bore you with every detail, but the food here is exceptional. Made with love and care, every dumpling has a story and each sauce is crafted to compliment them. I was blown away by the service, attention to detail, and valiant flavors of Asia. After hearing about what was supposed to be one of the best Chinese restaurants in Burlington, VT I eagerly made reservations as soon as they were available. At long last, the night had arrived and we made our way to A Single Pebble. Honestly, I wanted to love this place so bad but my experience just wasn't the greatest. I liked the design of the place okay and thought the downstairs seating area with the outside patio in view was kind of cool. I suppose the Lazy Susans on each table are not something you see every day but the food itself just wasn't what I anticipated. I will say, the beef wontons were good. They were fried well, hot and paired together well with the ginger vinegar sauce included. The filling inside was quite flavorful as well. My main complaint was with the mock eel (mushrooms) we ordered which was extremely (and I mean extremely) salty. The dish itself was marred by the amount of pure saltiness in each bite, very offputting to say the least. We also had the water beef which seemed to be just that, blandly seasoned vegetables and beef in a dish full of hot water. We were told the presentation was beautiful but the taste hardly reflected that. I suppose I'll end on a good note and say that our final dish, the tangerine peel chicken, was quite good. Each piece of chicken was well seasoned and tasted sweet and tangy. This is the dish I would probably go back to if I ever went back to A Single Pebble but honestly, save your money and order in somewhere else. This is nit the place to go if you have celiac or a shellfish allergy. All their food is cooked in the same fryer. My granddaughter has celiac and was disappointed with the limited items she could eat on the menu. My son has a shellfish allergy so most items on the menu, including the specials were off limits for him due to cross-contamination from the cooking method. The pictures on the wall were interesting and inviting. I liked Cha Shao bun, but their Tan Tan Mien was lacking flavors a little bit. Have not had Tan Tan Mien in Burlington area so cannot compare to any other restaurants in the area but it was a bit disappointing to me. We got the Tangerine (Orange) Chicken ($29) and the Emperors Beef ($35) for 2 of us. Both dishes were very bland - while it was all edible, the mediocrity of the dishes made the price completely unjustified. Very bland and spiceless and insanely overpriced. I was staying at the hotel nearby for a few days and kept walking by this place wanting to try it. I came in super late, they were kind enough to take me. Service was super fast, everyone was really nice working here and it seemed very genuine. I recommend the mock eel- made of mushrooms and really delicious. I also got scallion pancake and cucumbers, the cucumbers had zero flavor and the pancakes were not really good. I was starving so inhaled it anyway. It was so average. I hate leaving negative reviews, but I am shocked that people rave about this when there was absolutely nothing great about it. The chicken dumplings were mushy; the fried rice had very little flavor, and the General Tso's "Chicken" (cauliflower) was overly breaded. The best thing we had was the Chicken Lo Mein. We wanted to love this place because it's in a cool little house, offers inventive vegetarian options, and some of the reviews went on and on about the authenticity, but it missed the mark on that for us. Mixed review: Really Good Overall, but Big Bummer at the End I have been dining at A Single Pebble since I was a child and it was located in Barre. I have also LOVED dining at A Single Pebble for at least 15 years now. Mock eel and green beans are favorites, and the hot and sour soup makes you realize that you can never again have that from a generic Chinese restaurant. Why 3 stars? I got takeout recently while staying in a hotel for a staycation. I ordered something new, Ants Climbing a Tree. This dish is delicious flavor-wise, and I love a good cellophane noodle dish. HOWEVER, the pepper that was used is SO GRITTY that I had to call the restaurant and ask "is it possible the mushrooms were still dirty? It is too gritty to eat. Can you ask the kitchen?" In response to this question, the person I was speaking to said "Oh, yeah, we get asked that a lot. It isn't dirt, it is just the pepper we use that is super fine." So, my question is... if people often ask "Hey, is this dirt in my dish or...?" why do they still use this pepper? Or put this as a warning on the menu. It feels in your teeth like your food has sand in it (you know, beach day sandwich), or that feeling when you eat eggs and there was shell in it. I was unable to eat this dish at all. I would have appreciated being offered something for this... because if I was AT the restaurant, I would have (embarassingly, because I hate doing this) sent it back. I struggled through a few bites, because that FLAVOR is SO GOOD, but the sand-in-my-teeth feeling made me have to stop. I will be reaching out to the restaurant to overtly ask for a refund or a free dish, as this wasn't offered and I did have to then order a different meal from elsewhere because I couldn't eat this dish. read more

Phenomenal. My wife and I were used to Chinese food in Chinatown in NYC, so finding anything comparable in the Burlington area was fruitless (and we looked everywhere)... until last night. We had the scallion pancakes as a starter and they were sublime: perfect balance between the slightly crispy exterior and the soft interior. Savory with a slightly sweet complimentary sauce. I had the Buddha Sesame Beef (Seitan): with a crispy exterior and intricate sauce, it even had my non-Vegan wife stealing food from my plate. My wife had the shrimp fried rice that she raved about. Our waiter was a terrific kid, professional and kind. The only downside was the pricing: many of the entrees are a bit expensive, in the $30+ range. We had a wonderful time and look forward to going back and trying more options from the menu. read more

We've been there many times but not recently because it's very hard to get a reservation. So, my wife had an appointment in Burlington and we decided to order take-out. We ordered the Tangerine Peel Chicken, Dry Fried Green Beans, and Chicken Dumplings. Initially I was shocked at the prices - total of $82.28 but remembered that they serve "Family Style" and each time we're there the servings are large so I assumed the prices were reflective of this for take-out too. Well, when my wife got home I was shocked again at how SMALL the portions were. I'd bet, for example, there was not even a full chicken breast used to make the Tangerine Peel Chicken for $38.00? I'd venture to guess it cost less than $8.00 to make as I'm very familiar with the costs of products from wholesale food service companies. Geez it was just chicken, oranges and spices! The other two items were also very small. The quality was as we expected and very good but they just can't justify such small portions at those costs. It's sad because I have raved to many people about this place and it's even more sad that we will unlikely ever eat there again. Sure other chinese restaurants food isn't as good but for the costs at A Single Pebble you could easily get DOUBLE the food elsewhere. For example, they offer "Emperor's Beef" for $44.00! Really - for beef strips and vegetables and spices?! I found it funny the title under the main dish menu states "Big Dishes"! Gosh if they call their portions BIG I'd hate to see what their SMALL dishes are?! Anyway, I hope this review both helps them understand and appreciate that while the food is top notch they can't in any way justify their current prices and I hope it helps other patrons realize BEFORE they make the mistake I made that the quality no way justifies the exorbitant prices.
