Last year (2024), we found out that my Bailey (age 10) basically had a tumor in her heart which caused fluid to fill her chest cavity. We drained it at the emergency vet. It then filled again and the vet drained it again. At the time, we were in the dark on how fast it could fill up again. It filled again and faster than we had expected. We had to make a tough decision and Dr Grote was there for us. Unfortunately, 2 months later Bailey's sister Oreo (age 10) became very ill. Her health just went down hill. Call it heartbreak syndrome, but she ended up having tumors from her spleen, liver etc. 1 day it took a turn for the worst and she had a long day of seizures. She is epileptic but hadn't had seizures in quite some time before this day. She didn't eat, drink, etc. her cheeks started to cave and you could see her cheek bones. A month ago today, Dr. Grote helped me put my worried mind to ease. An in home euthanasia appointment on what would be day 4 of not eating. His compassionate brave way of challenging whilst reeducating me the day prior to our appointment has my Harley still with me today...! Harley going on 16 had suddenly refused to eat anything. She was already a skinny bony lady and I didn't want to prolong her life in protection of my grief. I've worked in the Veterinary field, I thought I was well aware when the Angel of Death is near and didn't want to witness her body suddenly shutting down overnight like my other 2 cats (one with cancer, other respiratory collapse). Certainly there was fear to wait too long and I accepted to release Harley with a death with dignity. After all, she had a stroke and multiple seizures during these past 6 months with days of no appetite. Aside from that her personality and body capabilities was relatively consistent. This time however she'd gulp and turn away with repulsion anytime food came near her. I felt it was her time.. Dr. Grote understood where I was coming from but dared to redirect my grief with a peaceful palliative death if Harley so choses .. This took me off guard as its difficult enough to make an end of life decision. To be replied with reassurance for availability yet to question if it's truly her time was unusual. Clearly he isn't doing this for the money but why bother investing time in a cause that he couldn't completely understand without his own thorough testing and exam? Initially overwhelmed with the inability to process a glimpse of hope I took a bath to set my body to ease. Pets feel our energy so to tend to my own body would only bring forth relaxation for us both. Nonetheless that night I took a deep breath and paced myself upon his insightful written articles off his website. To start, that pets can sometimes fast up to a week to restart their immune system. To trust that Harley knows her body and since she wasn't showing symptoms of suffering (aside from greasy anorexia) to go to a local shop to get VetCBD & Pepcid to aid her well being and comfort from nausea. We had 1.5 days time before her appointment. He provided other Veterinarians for potentially sooner care. On a Saturday afternoon I had reached out to half a dozen in home services. Initially Dr. Grote was the first to respond with a courtesy check in as he was to be providing another pet with a peaceful ending. He was the only one to respond that day, until one other did that night. He had the soonest availability and in comparison had more of a genuine text communication style. The other was short to the point but lacked the compassionate effort of details such as my pets name in reply. I decided to cherish my time with Harley and to not contact any other Veterinarians. Dr.Grote kept my time slot for us but that morning I decided to post pone. He gave me kind words and open communication over those next couple of days. Apparently Harley is a Catholic Kitty because once her 7 day lent fasting was over.. The morning of day 8 she was chowing down food. I assumed wet food was best, soft good smells but no she wanted my other kitties dry kibble left overs. I went and got a different diet for Harley to try as my other cat Luna had bad IBS and is on a soy protein prescription diet. I wanted Harley to have meat as she wasn't particularly indulging in their shared food. She has been a demanding little chucker ever since. Her slender cheekbones have been replace with a rounded face. Her coat is shiny and she has filled out her old skinny body better then I could have ever imagined. Whether it was the fasting in combination with the CBD I kept dosing her daily and letting her live her life however she wanted. Dr. Grote wouldn't accept tips of gratitude or a donation to her charitable choosing. The gift of life extended through alternative reeducation was enough for this gentleman. We reached out to Dr. Grote a few months ago to help our elderly cat Tinkerbell pass after she stopped eating/moving on her own. I never actually had the opportunity to use Dr. John's services, but hear me out -- he is the mobile vet to go to if you want a vet that truly cares about you and your pet. It's been an extremely long week of vet visits, sleepless nights, and sadness in my family as my dog Winter's condition went from optimistic to hopeless. We had been prepping for our lively and animated dog's life-changing surgery scheduled for Wednesday on Sunday, but by Monday we were scrambling to find a mobile vet to help him transition. This review is long overdue. Buddy passed away last July in the comfort of our home and Dr. Grote was the vet to help him cross over that rainbow bridge. I couldn't write this sooner because I was too broken up over the passing of beloved boy. I called up many vets, searching for the right one but none seemed right. All of them pushed me to put him down immediately. And they all seemed to just want to make a booking and get paid. In comes Dr Grody, who is pro life. We spoke at length. Three weeks ago, I had to make a decision to let go of my beloved cat, Treble. He had PKD and the disease progressed fast. I wasn't prepared to have to make the decision as fast as I had to, but I am thankful to Dr. Grote for his help and guidance. I made an appointment for him to come to my home on a Friday. I wish that the fleas of a thousand camels find their way to this man's crotch. I cannot say enough bad things about how terribly arrogant and condescending he is. My ancient cat, who was 17 and who'd been living with cancer and IBD for three years, was about ready to go. He'd developed a breathing problem and a wet eye, and there was nothing our highly specialized expert internal medicine/oncologist vet could do for him. It was time. He'd gone from 22 pounds (he was fixed after he became a tom, so he was a BIG framed kitty) to about 12, and he was unstable on his feet, lethargic, and could not breathe. In fact, we slept in the living room during his last three days in case he had breathing trouble. We asked our cousin who they used for at-home euthanasia, and they recommend John Grote. This man should have his DVM revoked. He started off the phone call by saying that he feels it's best to let pets die naturally. You know: suffering, slow, in pain. That was the first red flag. He then asks what's wrong with the cat, and I detailed the litany of issues that our boy had. It was a long list. He'd thrived for years, and his time was up. I mean, we're his pet parents. We spent $3-4K a year on this cat at least. He was getting the BEST possible vet care, dental care, food, litter, medication, and attention he could. We KNEW it was his time to go. Dr John deserves nothing less than 10 stars as he is the kindest, most empathetic vet I've ever met. There's a reason why he has 5 star reviews...as he earns every bit of it. I will admit that I haven't had a chance to meet Dr John in person but I will not hesitate to use his services or recommend him to anyone. For a week I was left to care for an incontinent, paralyzed 90lb dog that wasn't mine as her owner asked me to watch her at the last minute. During the week, her owner was unreachable n I was a mess and in tears, stressed, not eating or sleeping as I was afraid that it was very much possible this dog could pass away in my care. Dr John answered my call within minutes n though he had an appointment he told me to go and text him information. Our beloved GSD was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma (tumor on the spleen) on December 8th with a poor prognosis since is was advanced. She had had a complete "physical" in on Valentine's day that same year that included a full blood panel and full body x-rays. To say that her diagnosis was a shock is an understatement. I was (and still am) devastated. I had hoped to have (at least) another 2 years with her. The vet said she wasn't at the point that euthanasia should be considered because she was still active, eating and doing normal activities. I read about her condition and realized that there may come a time that she may have an episode and that she may need care during non-business hours. I called the emergency vet nearby and was told I could drop her off in the parking lot and return for her ashes, but I would not be able to be with her - needless to say, that was unacceptable. I called the 24 hour vet in South Pasadena and was told one person could be with her when she was euthanized - we live in difficult times, this was a reasonable limitation. I had a stand-by in case something happened at 3 in the morning. Dr. Grote had helped us transition one of our dogs a little over 3 years ago. He had bone cancer in his leg, and was in considerable pain - Dr. Grote was everything we needed then - he was compassionate and kind. The night came when my girl had a particularly bad night - I didn't know if she would make it through the night. I was a mess. I called Dr. Grote the following morning and he called me immediately. We discussed my girl's diagnosis and her prognosis - he told me that it was possible she would recover and that she wasn't in pain - in the traditional sense. She was uncomfortable, but not in acute pain. Dr. Grote gave me tips on how to make the coming days more comfortable and tips on what to give her to try to make her more comfortable (we went out and bought 14 yoga mats to help her walk on our hardwood floors easier - it really made a difference). I had hoped that she would die in our home naturally - her condition was one that this would be a possibility, unlike our other dog who was acutely suffering. Grote and with no notice was able to squeeze us in between his appointments. We moved her to the front porch and sat with her for the time we had left under a blue sky and loved on her. This man is an angel. Our cat daughter, Sami, is coming on 18 years. She has developed tumors, and has had struggles eating. We decided that we would rather see her go in dignity than wait another month for her to starve to death. Every day has been a crying fest for the last month-and-a-half. Our beloved 18-year-old boy took a turn for the worse on a Friday evening. We e-mailed a different service on Friday night. Called them Saturday morning, but they were booked and couldn't see us until Monday. Dr. Grote's hours were listed as 7:30am. We called at 7:31 and promptly had an appointment at 10:30am. Dr. Grote arrived a few minutes early clad in mask and protective gear, in accordance with COVID-19 protocols. He attended to us and our cat with patience, calm, kindness, and genuine care. We could not have been more grateful for the ease he brought to us and to our boy in such a difficult moment. At the end, by our request, he took our boy away discreetly to attend to his arrangements. As a side note, though it was farthest from our mind today, costs were noticeably below the other services we'd looked up. Dr. Grote was wonderful and compassionate when it came time for us to say goodbye to our beloved old English. Bulldog, Oliver. He took the time to explain the process to our family and then gave us some alone time with Ollie when we needed it. He even hand delivered Oliver's ashes back to us in a beautiful wood box. Dr. Grote helped our beloved cat Rainbow pass peacefully in our home this week. Rainbow had an advanced intra nasal tumor, and her quality of life plummeted very quickly recently. I was trying to decide if it was time to move forward with putting my angel down. I called Dr. Grote and told him my situation and he gave me very helpful advice. Dr. Grote was so empathetic and so kind. My story is a little different as we actually never used his services as it was too late for my sweet kitty Whiskey. We had found out Whiskey had cancer 2 weeks before he passed. We thought we had more time with him but his health very quickly declined and in his last week I started to look up at home euthanasia as I wanted him to be comfortable at home. Little did I know he was on his way out that very night and I frantically called Dr. Grote. Dr. Grote got all my emotional voice/text messages in the morning and called me back right away. He talked me through the death process that cats go through when they're about to pass. I sent him a video of Whiskey and he let me know that it was his time and that he's most likely be gone in 1-2 hours. He encouraged me to let him go naturally as cats often do in the wild and that Whiskey knew what was happening and that he was at peace with leaving...his body was already heading into a comatose state and he let me know that that was completely normal and he wasn't feeling any pain. I laid next to Whiskey for the next 2 hours and watched every single step that Dr. Grote mentioned would happen- I felt SO prepared and comforted from our talk on the phone and it ended up being one of the most beautiful (and sad, of course) experiences I've ever been through. He told me it was harder on me than it was on Whiskey...that humans are very emotional beings and animals are instinctual and this was just the next step for Whiskey. All these things I knew, but it was Dr. Grote's calming and patient voice that put me at ease and made me feel prepared to sit next to Whiskey and let him pass naturally. Dr. Grote could have chose to make money putting Whiskey to sleep himself or encouraged me to take him into a vet but he didn't- he was completely empathetic to the situation and calming when I needed it most. I'm SO SO grateful I got him on the phone that morning and had that chat. He made Whiskey's passing a beautiful one for me without even being there. I took our 8 year old boxer Caspian to our vet today as he was very lethargic, not eating, and his lower front gum was extremely swollen. Our vet was extremely concerned & worried and referred us to a pet hospital ASAP. I took Caspian to Access Pet Hospital in Pasadena and the doctor there found a mass in his stomach which she suspected was a hemangiosarcoma as a possible cause with hemiabdomen possibly bleeding from the spleen. She recommended immediate surgery but told me that she was worried that as he is older for a boxer that he might not make it though the surgery and to also consider putting him down to minimize his suffering. It's a Saturday and certainly didn't expect a call back today but he replied immediately and allowed me to converse with him via text. He's made some great recommendations to help calm us given the severity of the situation and even recommended a Chinese herb which has been proven to stop bleeding. He suggest that we observe Caspian for at least 24-72 hrs to see how he does instead of just rushing into an end of life euthanasia immediately. I had really just hoped to find a doctor that was available last minute on a weekend and did not expect so much help from such a caring, wonderful doctor in Dr. John. He literally just spent 20 minutes with us on the phone discussing our options. I offered to Zelle or Venmo him some money as a small token of our gratitude for his time, especially on a weekend evening but he wouldn't accept it.
