We arrived early, so early in fact that the Cardiology Department was not yet open. We waited in the car and since their parking lot was open and large it wasn't an issue. It was our first time within the ACCESS network so we did not know that the Cardiology Department was separate from Internal Medicine and the Emergency Department. We didn't know that there were so many varying departments. It didn't set in that this was a specialty clinic not a traditional veterinarian office (even though "specialty animal hospital" is literally in their name...haha). The Cardiology Department was on the second floor in a building shared with other companies. The office was clean and peaceful. The women at the front desk were kind and patient. They answered our questions and were helpful. We were seen quickly in the consultation room and I love that the nurse drew a cute little picture with cat ears and whiskers, and put our cat's name on the white dry erase board that was outside of the consultation room. She listened intently to our concerns as it had already been confirmed that the referring veterinarian had provided our cat's health records. We fully expected to wait a while for the doctor since we were about forty minutes early but about five minutes later Dr. Cole greeted us warmly with a team of onlookers (supporting doctors, maybe interns too not exactly sure). Dr. Cole was patient and explained the process for examining our cat's heart health. He answered our questions and took our fur baby for the testing. Around twenty minutes later he and his team returned with the results. He explained the prescription medicine that would be beneficial for our cat and gave further medical advice for our cat. I really appreciated the transparency and clarity around the results. I felt relieved to have such a warm, competent and friendly doctor handling the care for our fur baby. What in the actual BEEEEEP is wrong with this place? We were on vacay for 2 weeks and left my dog Chase with a sitter. When we came back, he was vomiting and having diarrhea for 2 days so I took him to my regular vet and she told me to take him to the ER immediately bc he was severely dehydrated. I arrived here asap to admit my dog and see what's wrong. For the total price of $6251.15, we had 2 overnight stays with a diagnosis of Gastroenteritis and urinary bladder stones with elevated kidney lab values. The drs made it sound like Chase was going to die if he didn't get surgery within the next few seconds. She made it sound extremely urgent. Mind you, he never had any issues peeing prior to this so it was big news to me. She said he has a partial urinary blockage due to the bladder stones in his urethra but he was still peeing. The drs recommendations were to keep him to monitor him overnight and push for urinary catheter and surgery. I didn't agree to urinary catheter or surgery bc I didn't want to do anything invasive to him. They ended up doing the urinary catheter to try and push the stones back in however, they were unsuccessful and couldn't even put the catheter in bc they didn't have a needle small enough so it didn't fit thru his penile bone? So basically they tried and failed but I was still charged for it. Then they continued to push for surgery. Meanwhile all they did was give him anti-nausea meds and IV the whole time he was in there. I was all over the place like okay what should I do? He's my baby and I want the absolute best for him. I decided to finally just take him out the hospital and let him rest at home while finding another location for a second opinion. When I picked him up, poor baby peed like a racehorse for abt 2 mins straight. I have never in my life seen him pee this much and he is 6 years old! They must've kept him in there and not release him for potty breaks/walks the whole time. Vets and hospitals are expensive but this was unbelievable. A money hungry spot and way overpriced. I can't believe they charged 6k for nothing but meds to go home with. Never again. read more

I had to take my senior dog after he suffered a seizure. The staff was patient, kind, the vet techs, assistants, and doctor took their time to explain the process, expectations, and steps. We left our dog hospitalized for treatment and we were allowed to spend time to say goodbye. We received clear communication by the doctor and were able to pick up our dog on the same day with meds and next steps. Our dog walked out in a red tshirt, with slogan I'm Back in Action across the back, medications and instructions. This was an emotional and hard day, but the staff made the interaction manageable. I am updating my review because my dog has been a patient of Dr. Cole's for almost seven years and he is an excellent cardiologist.   He is also very knowledgeable about diseases and conditions outside of cardiology.  When your dog has multiple conditions,  it is comforting to know that there is a doctor who completely understands the entire picture. Dr. Cole is thorough.  His reports are done quickly, which also helps if your dog has a team of doctors who need to know current status.  When I bring my dog to get her echocardiograms, she is taken on time and is returned quickly.  Then he comes out and talks to me about the results.  My dog is not held in back for hours and I don't have to wait days or weeks for the result of the echo. For Dr. Cole, 5 stars. On the subject of my initial review, I recently had to review my dog's medical records and found that on the day that my dog was admitted to the hospital, Dr. Garrity stated in her notes that I left another hospital the night before against medical advice (which is not accurate).  What she did not include in her notes is that she personally told me that the medical advice was based on the wrong diagnosis. Their work really isn't easy, so maybe when patients get that desensitized attitude from them, it's something we can't comprehend because we are on the other end. This place is a scam. I took my dog because he fainted. My dog is up to date with all his medical needs and regularly sees his vet. $1,700 later, they came back saying more tests and an ultrasound were needed. $2,800 later, they wanted to test for heartworms and do even more testing, even though all my dogs have been on monthly flea and heartworm medication for years. Of course, they prescribed medications, which I gave my dog. I declined all the extra tests and eventually discontinued the medications because my dog seemed to be doing worse since starting them. The vet said, "I don't think it's the medication," and now my dog just happens to be doing better after stopping them. Mmmm. Three years ago, our cat Momo was brought in. He'd become lethargic, barely moving, spent all of his time sleeping, and yet still got up to eat and drink. So we brought him in. I was actually bringing him in for constipation because he wasn't going. They took him through an absolute gauntlet of tests that cost us an arm and a leg, including putting him under anesthesia for an ultrasound that was completely unnecessary (the anesthesia, I mean). Despite this, the doctor on duty was very kind. And I'm glad that we did at least some of those tests because we found that Momo's liver values were absolutely through the roof. Higher than their instruments could read. The ultrasound revealed a mass in his pancreas (what I believe to have been an abcess). He stayed overnight while they administered antibiotics and fluids to try and get his numbers down. But with less than 24 hours of care, nothing changed. That next morning, Dr. Howard sat us down and, without going over his blood work, said he was dying. I was devastated. I kept asking what the root cause was. Because here's the thing, folks, the liver stops functioning in response to OTHER organs around it failing. She kept saying that they couldn't find one, but that it was probably liver cancer. According to Dr. Howard, Momo was in severe pain and needed to be put down within the next couple of days. She kept pushing that it was cancer. Cancer, cancer, cancer. HOWEVER, my biggest complaint was how cold and argumentative Dr. Howard was. When I pushed back stating that there had to be something causing Momo's liver to fail, asking about the mass they saw in his pancreas, while also mentioning that he still had an appetite despite everything, she pushed back saying that his diabetes was probably making him think he was hungry, so it was just an illusion. Listen. When an animal is truly dying, they don't eat. Trust me, I've been though a cat dying of Leukemia before. Nothing will make them eat if their time is up. She just kept pushing that he needed to be put down. That there was nothing they could do. So I went to get a second opinion from his primary vet and let me tell you: Dr. Howard is rotten at her job. She did not look at all the facts, she just looked at the liver numbers and made an assumption. My own vet went over ALL of his bloodwork numbers with me, something Dr. Howard wasn't even WILLING to do. His white blood cell count was completely normal. In other words, NOT CANCER. His gallbladder numbers were also normal. Something that would have also been badly affected if it was cancer or liver failure. All of the indicators that he was in complete, irreversible liver failure were not there. His bilirubin WAS extremely high, enough that his blue eyes were turning GREEN from all the jaundice. So we put him on the strongest antibiotics they had, and fluids for the foreseeable future. This happened three years ago now. And Momo is still here. Whether it was an infection in his liver or pancreas, we'll never know. But it worked. He celebrated his 18th birthday in May. More than once I was tempted to go back into ACCESS and chew Dr. Howard out for her negligence. To write Momo off as terminal without actually doing her JOB and analyzing his numbers was infuriating. I didn't, but the urge was always there. And seeing the amount of bad reviews for ACCESS here on Yelp encouraged me to share our story. The staff are very friendly, but this place price gouges like mad. And you can run the risk of a doctor who underserves your pet, simply because they have the arrogance to assume they know everything. It looks like Dr. Howard doesn't even work there anymore. My dog was showing symptoms of melena (back tar-like stool, diahrea, persistent vomiting every 3 hrs, low energy). Visited Glendora Emergency initially out of concern of the low Yelp rating for Access. Glendora did the bloodwork and X-rays, and prescribed metronidazole. The first 5 days on the med suggests she's getting better. However, the symptoms returned a week later and she stopped eating for 3 days. We then visited Access. Same initial process (bloodwork, X-ray). Finding nothing, and to pursue the root cause, ultrasound is suggested as it's the next step in the process. Like many I was hesitant at first. Symptoms continued so I brought her back the next day for IV treatment and ultrasound. Early evening I contacted Access and was expecting another diagnostic recommendation. But to my suprise they identified the root cause, acute pancreatitis. I was so relieved and grateful for their efforts. I thought the metronidazole caused my pet to stop eating, but the Dr took a bigger picture approach and was able to ID the root cause. Appetite enhancer, pain med, and probiotics were prescribed. And in both visits, refunds were issued for some of the estimates which was already paid. This demonstrates some level of honesty and integrity. Within a week, the symptoms began to subside. The stool went from black to brown, watery to soft and now solid. No more vomits or pain. The experience improved my perspective and opinion on vets. Yes, you may find out what the issue is through googling, but they still have a process to follow to identify and confirm the issue. In the end, it's all worth it. read more

My primary veterinarian performed a biopsy and ultrasound for my cat and referred me to Access Pasadena for another ultrasound and for their internist to review the case. Access had one month before my appointment to gather my cat's records, tests, and notes from my primary vet. When I arrived, the intake questionnaire asked if my cat had fasted. I checked "No" because no one from Access had told me fasting was required. The technician at the front desk said that might be an issue but went to check with the veterinarian. She returned and confirmed that it was still okay to proceed with the $210 consultation, even though my cat had not fasted. However, once I was in the exam room, the veterinarian came in, repeated information my primary vet had already told me, and then said she could not proceed because my cat had not fasted. This was confusing since their own staff had already confirmed that the visit could move forward. The vet also told me my previous tests from November 2025 were now considered outdated and that she needed my primary vet's full notes. This was surprising because Access had an entire month before the appointment to request whatever information they needed. Instead, I was told this only after arriving. After a very brief visit, the vet provided a quote including a $745 ultrasound, bringing the estimate to $3,635 total. Nearly $2,900 of that was for repeating tests simply because the previous ones were done a few months earlier. In the end, I was charged $210 for a consultation that lasted only a few minutes, where the vet mostly repeated what I already knew and then said she could not proceed further. Now I have to redo tests with my primary vet, schedule another appointment with Access, and pay the $210 consultation fee again, along with the ultrasound. If the staff had simply told me at the beginning that my cat couldn't be seen without fasting, I would have happily rescheduled and avoided wasting $210. To make matters worse, on top of the estimate, 2nd page included another $1,000 charge for resuscitation if something goes wrong during testing, bringing the total to over $4,600 just for diagnostics and monitoring--before any treatment even begins. If surgery is required (which my primary vet suspects may be the case), the total could easily exceed $10,000+ at Access. CPR should be free, not a $1,000 option. Situations like this highlight what feels wrong with healthcare--not just for people, but for our pets as well. Charging thousands for tests AND TREATMENT is one thing, but charging $210 for a consultation that couldn't actually proceed because of issues the clinic already knew about beforehand does not sit right with me.... on top of the exorbitant quote I received just for retests. I'll update this review after my next visit. Hopefully management sees this and considers offering a complimentary consultation, since I essentially paid $210 for a visit that provided no meaningful consultation. I left the appointment feeling poorer, without learning anything new about my cat's condition, and after taking unpaid time off work to attend the visit--something I'll now have to do again for the next appointment. 5 stars for Dr. Tran in the ER, 2 stars for everyone else. Dr. Tran was very compassionate and understanding of our situation and made us feel heard. We had to hospitalize our boy for 2 days and had a less-than-ideal experience with the Internal Medicine team. As far as treatment went it was as good as it could be given the situation, but their communication from their front desk staff through the Dr. themselves was pretty poor. I was told I'd have our dog's test results Sunday 12/28 and I didn't receive any tests or results until Friday 01/02. This was only after I had been calling every day (5 times) and had to email records directly. Their receptionist was extremely unhelpful never making an effort to resolve the issue even after being told multiple times our pet had already died and we just needed the results for insurance purposes. We had already paid over $6,000 for services and still had to chase them for documentation during an already difficult period. Had he still been alive, waiting 5 days for results to plan the next move would have been unacceptable. To summarize: emergency room staff was great, internal medicine needs to work on customer service and communication. read more

My dog started to limp one day & after a checkup at our local vet, they recommended us to ACCESS for a tear in her leg's ligament. We arrived to ACCESS and there is plenty of parking. There is a # to call when you arrive. We checked in and were placed in a room where the doctor went over options and also the techs went over costs. We did the surgery to help our girl be able to walk normally again. It was a long recovery process requiring a little physical therapy and short to increasingly longer walks. We were refer to ACCESS Pasadena internal medicine specifically (Dr. SG) by our primary vet for our cat. Our cat has been having chronic cough and breathing issues, that is why we wanted someone who is specialized and who can go in depth with how we can help our cat. They took our cat to another room for examination and vital signs. Then, the doctor came in and told us she did an exam and heard increase and congested breath sounds (something we've obviously know because we live with the cat, duh?!), says nothing about his vital signs, without even asking assessment questions. The next thing she says was we need blood work, xray, and bronchoscopy. That was pretty much it, no options, no explanation at all. We understand diagnostic is important but to someone who is in medical field (which I am), she gave us no understanding of what labs they're doing and what it can tell us, what X-ray will show us. Most importantly, zero explanation of benefits and risks in sedating a 13 year old cat who is frail and sensitive, stick a tube down his throat just because we need data points. This speaks to me as a medical professional as no bedside manner, she does not know how to communicate with patient's family, and probably burned out. Her only "sympathetic" statement was the cat is precious to us therefore we should do all these things. It took us 1.5 month to schedule this visit, dr's visit was 15mins, the only thing they did was vital signs. Come on! Do I really need to pay $220 for you to tell me what I do already know??? We asked for the bill if these things were to happen (attached photo) which was ridiculous and decided to run away from this place. Our pets need us to advocate for them and this business is just hungry for money with no help and takes advantage of pet owners. I would definitely bring this up to better business bureau. However, I have to take one star away because of the billing practices. Pet owners should carefully review their itemized bills. In our case, we noticed charges that did not match the services that were actually performed. They also double charged on the procedures (ie. the ultrasound). As a healthcare provider myself, I understand how medical billing works. Clinics cannot simply add charges or create itemized bills that do not accurately reflect the services provided. I sincerely hope this was an honest mistake or oversight. But if billing is not carefully reviewed, situations like this can happen -- and that is especially troubling when pet owners are already under tremendous emotional stress while trying to care for a sick pet. The dog was unidentified at the time, and I was trying to help get it emergency care. I understood that to mean the dog would be evaluated and treated as appropriate. I later learned -- through the dog's owner -- that the dog was classified as a stray and euthanized that same night. My family and I had an amazing experience with ACCESS even though we were there for a heartbreaking situation. Something people tend to not realize or understand is that having a pet can be expensive. Veterinary care, especially emergency or specialty care, is very pricey. The hope is that your pet will never have to go through any scenario that requires either type of care but the reality is, it will most likely happen one way or another. My almost 17 year old cat had to be admitted to the ER for a blood transfusion two days before Christmas. She was in stage 4 kidney disease and was anemic. She also had to be transferred to internal medicine for additional lab work and tests. The techs and doctors called us daily to keep us updated. Unfortunately, while the transfusion went well, other parts of her body began to shut down. We were able to bring her home on Christmas for a few hours before making the decision to take her back for euthanasia. It was the hardest thing we ever had to do but every single person we encountered, from the receptionists to the nurses to the doctors, were so amazingly knowledgeable and kind. I could not have asked for a better experience during such a difficult time. To be transparent, I now have a $6000 bill to pay after 3 days of ICU care, treatment, and the euthanasia but she was my first pet and whatever I could do to make her last days as comfortable as possible was worth it to me. They do take CareCredit so I'm able to pay it off over the course of a year without interest. Based off my personal experience, I highly recommend ACCESS. read more

Open 24 hours, all the staff provided immediate and sympathetic support for our daughter and future son-in-law during a very hard time immediately after the tragic loss of their beloved dog due to a traffic accident. It happened late at night in South Pasadena, and we were able to recognize that ACCESS was still open by getting information from a sign at the closed clinic that was closest to the accident site. Unfortunately, there was nothing anybody could do except to give the owners time to grieve and say goodbye, which was greatly appreciated. They took the body to be cremated, and the ashes will be returned to them in a few weeks in Torrance. The facility itself is large, with a private parking lot and clear directions on how to call to be let in. It was well staffed, even after midnight. There are a number of private examination rooms, all large enough to handle most sizes of pets and their owners. There is a waiting room, where we saw a few owners patiently waiting with their pet to be seen by the veterinarian. We ended up having to go back to see if we misplaced a phone there. Again, the staff was very helpful on the phone and even helped us try to find it in the facility. We ended up finding it in a different spot, but their willingness to help doing something completely out of their job description was very kind. TLDR: They market themselves as a high end specialty facility but seem to prioritize volumes and profits over care so vets tend to be overworked and probably will miss important details and won't spend enough time with your pet. Our dog passed away last June and received a majority of his care at Access Pasadena. I'm not placing the blame for his passing solely on them, and there are staff and vets there that are hard working, capable and friendly. This review is for how they market themselves and how they ultimately conduct business based on our experience. They market themselves as a high end specialty hospital and I think that comes with it an expectation of care quality. But whether due to corporate quotas or profit goals or whatever, everyone always seemed rushed, barely having time to answer questions, techs would get mad if you want to talk to the vet for additional questions and follow up appointments are spaced out super far. Even after our dog passed away in their facility, their scheduler still called us the following week to see if we were still coming in for a procedure. Because of this, we think, the vets, even though they might be very capable, definitely do not spend the time they need to come up with appropriate treatment plans. In my conversations with the vets, I got a lot of "this might be heart failure" and "this patient had significant heart disease" and "there's fluid in his lungs", but never a concrete plan on what is best to treat these conditions. I do work in human medicine so I should have insisted they spend more time and pushed harder for treatments so part of it is indeed my fault. But then what if people don't have a background in medicine? How are they supposed to know what to push for and what not to if the vet themselves don't even have time to figure it out? We did end up seeing another vet "specialty" hospital but by then it was too late. And again, what if people can't afford to go get a second opinion because they already paid a fortune to this place expecting them to figure it out? So when you market yourself as "the experts" and charge people high end prices to take care of their family, they deserve to expect to be appropriately taken care of. I would not recommend this place based on how they seem to operate. read more

I meant to leave this review after my cat was cared for there, but her recovery made it slip my mind. My 1.5 year old indoor cat, Aster, managed to somehow break the tip of her femur about 3 days before Christmas in 2023. I took her to a clinic for an x ray, and they suggested femoral head removal surgery, but advised nobody would be able to do it until after Christmas. Aster could not walk and was in so much pain! I called around and found that ACCESS would try to fit her in the next day. They said they would be able to repair the break with a pin and not need to remove the femoral head! Which is great, because removing a part of bone from such a young cat seemed crazy. They did the surgery and I picked her up on Christmas Eve. The care and patience Dr. De Armond took explaining the procedure, aftercare, and potential issues before and after surgery was amazing. I never felt like she was rushing to get off the phone with me. Aster did end up needing a follow-up surgery for the pin to be removed after healing (which they had said was fairly likely), but they charged a minimal amount for that because I had already spent so much on the initial surgery. (Thank God for decent pet insurance!) When she managed to get her wound infected at one point, they cleaned it and gave me additional tips for free. (Trying to keep a young cat from running or jumping for 8 weeks while healing is an entirely different challenge! I would give ZERO stars if I could. I brought my cat, Z Man, to ACCESS Veterinary Hospital - [Pasadena] after a dog bit him, causing a hole in his hard palate. I paid $4,400 for a CT scan and surgery performed by Dr. [Dr. Jaron Naiman], but the second hole wasn't discovered until DAYS later when a staff member used a cell-phone camera--NOT the CT scan or surgical exam. Because they missed this second oronasal defect, my cat suffered for weeks, was unable to eat properly, and risked aspiration pneumonia. He even pulled out his feeding tube from discomfort. It took THREE visits before anyone admitted there was still a hole. I have filed a complaint with the California Veterinary Medical Board and the BBB. I am demanding they cover the cost of corrective surgery. Pet owners, beware: their diagnostics and surgical standards are shockingly poor--and very expensive.
