I went to the Cordova location. The environment looks nice. If you are into selfies after you get your hair done, they have a wall for that. The stylist was nice. After my first visit, my hair did not turn out quite the way I thought. She explained it would look better with each trim. I went about four times. The style never turned out right. Something came up which prevented me from going back and I just stopped. Upon further research, she is only an apprentice hairstylist and the styled I wanted was not her specialty. The overall experience at salon on Popular was okay but the customer service of one stylist was very unprofessional. This stylist was always late for scheduled appointments, would always stop to chat to others then wanted to charge for extra time. This stylist retwisted a section of my hair and left the other sections as they were then got aggressive when it was brought to her attention. This stylist continued on to say that my hair was damaged but Never mentioned it until she was made aware of the undone locs. I had a great experience. Location was nice and the space had a cool set up. I received the curl pro from Dominique! She brought my hair back to life. I was able to watch the techniques she uses when washing hair and applying the products. I loved how it turned out and she even gave me a tip sheet and 2 scrunchies when she was finished. I bought the deva curl products she used and did my version of wash n go. I didn't section my hair as much as she did and I only hit my hair with the diffuser for 10 minutes then let it air dry the rest of the way. I've been a patron here since they opened in 2010. I had severe allergies and asthma and other salons used lots of chemicals and sprays. Also due to my allergies to certain ingredients in products, I couldn't use some of the salon sprays, gels or shampoos. A lot of salons would not allow me to bring in a product that I could use but Takeisha the owner did. She also did a consultation with me and she allowed me to look at any products that would be used on my hair so that I could check the ingredients. The stylist also helped and didn't mind. This made me feel like I had a place to go that truly cared about its clients. Now the products they use work well with me and my hair. The staff are always on time and are customer oriented and friendly. The quality of service is excellent. Truly natural hair care. I've had my hair dyed several times here even went bold and went blonde and the stylist did an exceptional job I absolutely loved it! The vibe is just so relaxing and it's such a self-care environment with positive energy all around. The receptionist is very friendly always acknowledging you when you walk in the door. Takeisha, the owner, is shady and GREEDY!!!! And keeps deleting my reviews so here we go! A few months ago I inquired about double strand twists. She purposefully put in my wrong contact information in hopes that I'd miss my appointment. They sent it to my mom's contact info who was already in their system. I told Takeisha this multiple times that wasn't my info. I didn't miss my appointment but was 15 mins late since I didn't get reminders on my appointment time. Her and her sneaky stylist, Keyshia, did not answer the store phone that morning when I called to verify the time when I realized I didn't get reminders. So I arrived 15 minutes late due to their failure to send me the correct appointment details. There was no written late fee/ no refund deposit policies in their emails either when my mom checked after they refused to do my hair and refused to give me my deposit back!!! They insisted I pay another $125 on top of the $125 deposit I already paid. The full service was already overprice as hell for like $250 just to add some hair to my own head. HELL NO!!! Never again. If you want to get advice and help on your natural, locs or even braids journey this is a great option. I have only booked with Dominique and each time she delivers the styles I desire. The salon is a calm and relaxing place while you are getting your hair done. They have a second location in Cordova, I have only been serviced at this particular location. Of the many times I've been to this shop, hopeful each time, I've been disappointed in some capacity EVERY TIME whether it being from confusion with appointment scheduling through THEIR scheduling means, the owner and stylist not being on time to open the shop or begin the appointment, and now, another instance of scheduling confusion and a rushed- half done style (because there were no Bobby pins at 1 station when there are nearly 10 stations and a whole herd of stylists!!) I could have done this myself for $85 and I could have also went back but enough is enough with this place. I set an appointment for 9/17 at 9am online and paid a deposit weeks before hand to get a silk press and a trim. The day of my appointment (my birthday by the way) as I was getting in my car to head to my appointment I get a phone call from the receptionist at the salon saying KoKo called in sick and had to move my appointment around. Initially I was devastated! I expressed to the woman on the phone it was my birthday and had plans! Asked her if I could come in the same day but at a later time. She told me she could get me in at 1:30pm. I arrived 30mins prior to my appointment and was greeted by the receptionist that I talked to and a woman named Tyra. The receptionist immediately remembered me and wished me Happy Birthday! That meant a lot that she remembered! Tyra even jumped in as well and said she would take care of me that moment because her client did a no call no show! I was taken to the shampoo bowl immediately! No waiting what so ever! Tyra did great on my silk press and was very patient with me regarding my trim. She listened, took her time and gave me what I wanted! I walked out feeling beautiful and still had length (I have 4C hair over an inch of split ends). I'm giving them a four stars only because of the stress of having to move my schedule around that day. Staff is not professional/careless, there was an incident that happened that was just awful. The person who did my hair was nice but didn't seem very knowledgeable about natural hair. I've been serviced at this salon five times by different stylists and I was pleased each visit. The appearance and ambiance of the shop is great and all the stylists are unique in their own way. This used to be my natural hair place. It unfortunately has had a large employee turnover. Besides the owner and one other stylist, none in the profile picture are currently here and have gone to start their own natural hair salon in Greater Memphis. The current stylists are not as well trained and passionate about natural hair. Lots of my friends and I have decided to see other salons after trying ANA again. Many have had terrible color jobs that had to be corrected and trims that turned into big chops. I had a standard twist out and told the stylist how I like it. She ignored items did it completely wrong. I'm too passive. In short, They will finish your hair but it is not the same finesse and love that I saw in the previous "iteration". A couple of month's ago, I decided to give this place a shot. I went in and asked for an appointment that same week. Luckily they were able to fit me in with short notice. I arrived at the salon right at the time of my appointment. I gave the receptionist my name and he directed me to the stylist's chair. I didn't even have to sit in the waiting area. The young lady, Destiny, asked me what I had in mind. I showed her a photograph of the style I wanted. She gave it a glance and said "Okay." She washed my hair and blew it dry. Surprisingly, this was not a painful experience. She then made my hair BEAUTIFUL. I was pleased as punch when I left about 2 hours later. I had a fantastic, professional 'do and I didn't have to stay there all day. As I walked away, I thought 'this was too good to be true. I like my hair and I wasn't imprisoned for hours first... this was a fluke.' Yesterday, I went back to A Natural Affair. I scheduled my appointment online this time, with Jewell. I walked in at my scheduled time and was directed to Jewell's chair by the receptionist. I showed her a photo of what I wanted. She gently washed and detangled my hair. Two hours later, I walked out looking AMAZING. The stylists here are very nice and know how to make natural hair really shine. The vibe inside is relaxed and upbeat. The stylists are professional and seem to enjoy working together. They respect your time. There's no waiting around. You come in, get your services, and go. This was the worst hair cut that I've ever received in my life; including the time I was five years old and attempted to cut my hair myself. I received a curly cut from a stylist whose name I don't remember. She was very pleasant! I didn't ask her to style my hair so when I left the salon my hair was just a giant puff ball. It wasn't until I got home and washed my hair myself that I realize that the hair on one side of my head was significantly longer than the other. It took me a couple of hours afterwards to work up the courage to examine the rest of my hair. Unfortunately, the rest of my hair was just as uneven and unacceptable as the sides. While I got my hair cut, I was able to see several other women walk away with wonderful cuts/styles. I wish I'd asked them to style it instead of cut it. I'm thankful that my hair grows relatively quickly and that I'm able to style it in a way that hides this terrible haircut. Again, I want to stress that the people were great and that everything else I saw being done looked very nice! However, I would not suggest going here if you want a curly cut. read more

My most recent appointment consisted of me looking at 4 other customers and we all had one thing in common : no stylist. Update! WARNING! Pay the "non-refundable" deposit at your own risk! Second experience not good. I made an appointment online for 9:30am on 05/27/2019. I did not express any appointment time preferences, this was just the first available appointment. Received a call at 9:02am while en route to salon informing me that the appointment was a mistake and that no one was available to service me. Fine. I asked when I could expect a refund and was told that the deposit was non-refundable and that I would need to apply it towards another appointment. I have never had a business refuse to return my money after failing to provide service due to their own mistake. After discussing this for a couple of minutes, the person on the phone seemed to realize that a refund was in order and agreed to apply it. I'm still waiting a week later for my refund. I've sent an email, to which I've received no response. I guess I'll be forced to contact my credit card company. Hard to believe I have to go to these lengths to retrieve $15, but it's the principle. If this is ok, then everyone should set up a website promising service in exchange for a deposit and then just not provide the service. At $15 a pop, it could prove pretty lucrative for providing absolutely no goods or service. This is no way to do business folks. BEWARE. read more

NIGHTMARE!!!!! I wanted to add simple highlights to my natural so I searched for a salon in the city that catered to natural hair. I called them for a consultation and went in that same day to meet with a stylist. I explained to her what I was hoping to have done, picked out my color and made an appointment. The first thing that should have tipped me off was the "lazy" attitude of the stylist. Any who... I show up for my appointment and got my 2nd tip that the visit wasn't going to go well. The stylist Stephanie had to refer back to the owner for instruction on how to do the highlights that we had discussed 1 day earlier. The owner suggested a technique that was different from what we had discussed during the consult but since THEY'RE SUPPOSE TO BE THE PROFESSIONALS.... Excited about getting a new color and trusting of what appears to be a professional establishment, I carry on. The entire time that Stephanie was on my head, SHE WAS ON THE PHONE. I noticed that some of the stylist in the salon were turning out fairly nice twist outs and locks so I continued to hope that I would not be the disaster of the day. Now I've had color in a professional salon before. Usually the stylist will come back and check to see how the color is processing. NO!!! Stephanie stuck me under the dryer, went and took a seat and YOU GUESSED IT...GOT BACK ON THE PHONE!! Keep in mind that the owner Keisha's station was directly across from Stephanie and she didn't seem to have a problem with any of this. I wish I could up load the pictures of the outcome. It was the worst color job I've ever seen in life!!!!! Everyone in the salon, including Keisha were looking at me like OH MY GOODNESS!!! The male receptionist even gave me a look of pity. Before I even made it to the mirror to see this mess, their faces told the whole story. I have stripes in the back of my head and a HUGE bright spot right in the front. Not to mention, the color is NOTHING like the one that I picked out. I picked a golden honey color (for high lights) but I got a HUGE orange circle in the front with blond stripes in the back. It's what you would expect to see on an episode of pranked. What's most disappointing is that the owner Keisha was comfortable to let that type of work leave her establishment. I even called back to speak to her and after putting me on hold several times, she came back to the call and made a poor attempt to justify Stephanie's work. She said that Stephanie could tone down the color but it would be the next week before she could get to me. Never mind the fact that I have a very public and visible job in the city. Never mind that fact that IF I did ever step foot back in that place, it WOULD NOT BE TO SEE STEPHANIE. Now I will have to pay some real professionals to repair what was done. Best believe I'm telling everyone I encounter about this monstrosity of a color job and experience!!! Save yourself some time, $$$ and embarrassment... DO NOT GO HERE!!!! read more

I've been a client of this salon for 5 years, and Koco has braided my son's hair at least ten times, but one hour before his appointment today, the receptionist called because she said "none of the girls want to do his hair because he cries too much during the detangling." I was, naturally, livid because it was, again, just one hour before his appointment and I had already taken down his braids down from the previous time it was done (2 weeks ago). I had made this current appointment immediately after his hair was braided the last time, so the salon had two weeks to cancel his appointment, allowing me more time to find someone else to do his hair. This was completely unprofessional and also petty because this is a 5 year old child that was essentially fired (again, ONE HOUR before his appointment). So if you need your child's hair braided, I would suggest trying another salon, and definitely not Koco read more

I previously was very pleased with the service at this salon but with the many stylist changes that have taken place, I can no longer recommend it unless there is a specific stylist you are looking to use. Unlike my first few experiences, the stylists I've used since handled my natural hair very roughly while detangling and did not create the braided style i requested through pictures. On another visit, i only asked for my existing afro to be "shaped up" ended up losing 2-3inches of unstretched hair. I have not been back in over a year because of this. Okay I will admit it, I have been in Memphis for a year and a half and still hadn't settled on a place to get my mop flopped. Really I was disappointed in the shops that I went to...it seems they either weren't exactly sure what to do with my curls and spent significant amounts of time trying to convince me that I needed a texturizer or a weave OR they did an okay job taking care of my hair but styled like they were stuck circa 1985. I had recently encountered quite a few sistas whose hair looked great....healthy, beautifully styled and the one thing all these women had in common was recommending this place. For all my natural curly sistas out there....THIS is the place for you. They do online scheduling which is quite convienent. The staff is professional, friendly, and chatty (but not annoyingly so). They actually take you at the time of your appointment (occassionaly a radical concept at a black hair salon). I have seen Stephanie and Jewel so far and both have done an excellent job with my hair. I have had a rod set and flat twist updo done by Stephanie that people simply could not stop complimenting me on and Jewel did the bomb.com flatiron that lasted almost two weeks before it got fluffy. My only minor complaint is that their estimated times for services are about 20-30min too short (hence the reason I didn't give 5 stars)...although they seem to do much better with times for the early morning appointments. Bottom line...if you have natural hair and want a variety of styling options (including sisterlocks and traditional loc care), people who care about your hair's health and who will not let you leave without looking absolutely fabulous then run not walk to this salon and get your butter whipped! read more

I hadn't been to a hairstylist and have been a healthy natural since 2000, but recently I had been experiencing severe breakage. I recently moved from Austin to Memphis so I had no referral/recommendation but since this salon had good reviews I figured it was a safe bet. I called to schedule an appointment and was surprised that there were openings to come on in on a Saturday afternoon. I went to get a consultation and get my hair washed, conditioned, and a trim. Although the owner and another stylist seen in the group photo were present, they had some random young lady with strawberry-colored hair attend to me. We consulted with the owner regarding my concern about my severe breakage but that was the extent of the owner's (or any licensed hairstylist's) involvement in my care. I knew I should have left when the girl was scratching my scalp with her nails and not the bed of her fingers. She tugged at my natural hair, I believe causing even more damage and leaving me with a very sore scalp. She had absolutely no idea what she was doing trimming my hair because I left with an even and significantly shorter fro BEYOND where my hair was damaged. She had the NERVE to stand next to me as I was paying the very unprofessional teenage boy behind the register waiting for her tip! Never again. read more
