Reasons I love the Salon: 1. I totally forgot about an appointment. Not only did Grace book me for her next opening, she was nice to me and gave me a great haircut even though I TOTALLY VAMPED on my first appointment. Also, I called her as my school was freaking out over a tornado warning to let her know I'd be late to my second appointment, and she was very nice about it and said she would wait and just to call when the storm warning was over to check in about whether we could meet that day or reschedule. (As it turned out, I was only going to be about 10 minutes late, and she was able to see me that day). 2. No negative gossipy-vibe here, and no pressure to tell Grace my life story. I really appreciate a stylist who is friendly and kind, but not trying to force some intimate connection at our first meeting. Maybe it's the difference between 20 year-old me and 30-something year-old me, but I don't need a new best friend every time I get a haircut. 3. Grace really listened to me. I went in with a chin-length bob, which a stylist at another salon had given me when I showed her a picture of a much-shorter cut for my very-curly hair. Grace instantly saw what I wanted, and was enthusiastic about helping me go from long to short. Three weeks later, and I still love this haircut, whether I blow-dry it or not. Grace was also careful not to badmouth the stylist who gave me the dreaded shoulder-bob, affording her the benefit of the doubt. "Maybe," she said, "she'd had someone cry in her chair that day, and she was worried you didn't really want to go short." But I did, and Grace helped me, and I will be back again and again! Listen, I'm a thirty year old woman who has never, ever liked going to get my hair cut. Stylists never seemed to understand what I want, and I would rather spend the money on having a beer and cutting it myself. That is, until Tamara. I keep it short, somewhere between boyish and grown up lady. She listens to what I tell her and I get the perfect balanced, low maintenance cut I want every time. I got a wax this time, too, and nearly fell asleep in the chair under her gentle, hair-ripping. I've even taken my young kids (3 & 5) to her, and she made them feel very fancy. It's due to the previous reviews by several Elite '12 that had me excited about The Salon. First off, it's my kind of place; clean, small and personal. I've started with fingers/toes with Miss Jackie. She's a treat. Best mani I've had in some time. The back-to-basics set up takes some getting used to but hell, I'm easy ; ) My only less-than-stellar comment would be about the price however that's on me for assuming based on the general pricing for cuts & colors but since everyone is an independent contractor far be it from me to say it wasn't worth it...which I won't...because it wasn't. While in there I started a chat with Angel. She gave me a general quote for cut/color which suited me right down to the ground. I will make that appointment for next week. In the mean time, It's bloody hot outside so I'm going to put me feet up and admire my pretty toes between commercials while I watch the last 2 episodes of Mad Men. I started going to The Salon when Grace moved there from HiGorgeous. It's much smaller than HiGorgeous, but closer to my hizzy. Score! One thing I LOVE is that my ears are no longer assaulted with horrible, horrendous, ear bleedingly bad music, as they were while I "got my hair did" at HiGorgeous. I get the same wonderful treatment - actually, it's even more friendly...Tamara is super nice and always says "hi" to me when I'm there. At HiGorgeous, the haircut price was based on hair length. Currently, I have short hair & my cut costs $25.00. I'm not sure if the same "price based on length" applies here. I'm growing my hair out - in true "circle of life" form. Cut it off, grow it out, cut it off, grow it out...you get the idea. So, I'll let you know! They even have a nail tech at The Salon, so you can get a mani & pedi, too. I've heard that the nail tech is a riot (I was going to say "knock your socks off" funny, but thought I'd refrain). I have yet to meet her, though. The Salon accepts walk in's, too. At most places, a men's haircut typically isn't much of an experience, often just a quick pit stop at a fantastic sam's and few drags off a set of guarded clippers, and after giving up a half hour of your time you go find something more interesting to do. But it doesn't have to be this way. The Salon pampers me like a king, Angel keeps me cracking the whole time and the entire shop makes me feel right at home. Prices are good, its a stones throw from my house, I get to support a great Midtown business and I walk out happy as a clam. Boring haircuts no more! See you next month! read more

I've been living in Memphis for a little over 10 years now and in midtown for basically that long. And let's just say it's taken me about that long to find someone that I trust with my hair. I've been everywhere, even the really high priced places, and always left feeling mostly "MEH" about the whole thing. I'm a guy so you wouldn't think I'd be so picky about it, but I am. Luckily for me, by the powers of twitter, I stumbled upon a glorious place called The Salon run by a glorious woman named Tamara who now holds the title for "Person I've Let Cut My Hair More Than Twice", I guess I oughta get her a medal or trophy or something...or just a giant picture of my hair. Anyway, the place is simple and clean and...FRIENDLY! Everyone in there is so freakin' nice that I almost have to remind myself I'm in midtown. I used to dread getting my hair cut and the awkward conversations that were forced upon me by the "stylists" but now I look forward to gossip-time and leaving looking 1002039209302times better than when I walked in. Tamara has been doing my hair at the Salon for a number of years now, and I can't say enough good things about her. She really listens to what you want, unlike some stylists, and knows a lot about cut and color. I've been to more expensive salons and been charged almost twice what the Salon charges and their color services were not as good as what I get at the Salon. All the stylists there are friendly and talented. They make you feel comfortable and right at home, and they can almost always work you in when you're having a "hair emergency." My only complaint is the lighting in the store is kind of harsh and unflattering. They didn't spend a lot of money on spa-like decor like Gould's, but they also don't charge outrageous prices, either. In my opinion, that's a good trade-off. read more

My friend had been raving about Grace for months so I had to try her. I had little faith anyone could clean up the bottle blonde disaster that has been my hair for years. She not only cleaned it up, she overhauled it in a way I didn't think was possible. I feel renewed! She also listened and very delicately trimmed my hair, as I wanted to keep some length. She's not the stylist we've all seen before who thinks a trim equals 5" of hair. She really listens to you and tailors your goal to what's realistic and best for your skintone/face shape. She is also a down to earth chick who is really funny the whole time she's working with you. She keeps everything lite and is so completely focused on customer service. Did I mention affordable? I've been going to The Salon for quite a few years - with a break in-between when I was growing it out and only getting a small trim on the ends a couple times a year. So, almost 3 years ago I decided to take the plunge back to very short hair and I wanted Tamara to do the honors. I'm SO glad I did. I still get compliments from complete strangers on my hair and my man thinks I'm sexier than ever (that's 27 years now, folks.) I mean, she's just that good. She listens to what you want, gives an honest opinion and follows directions. If she suggests something to you - YOU should also listen and consider it. She won't steer you wrong. Full disclosure - over the years, we have become friends & we do talk outside of appointments, but neither of us would declare bff status. I just want to clarify. Also - I've referred other friends to her (with wildly varying hair types/styles) and they report happy results. The Salon is clean, friendly, prompt and courteous. Tamara once comped me some highlights because she was running a few minutes late. Appreciated, but not necessary to keep me coming back. I often talk to Ms. Jackie when making my appointments. I don't wear nail polish, but I should probably get her to do my nails or feet sometime just because she's a hoot to talk to & it would be fun. I have no doubt I'd look better and feel better after. Grace is the Michelangelo of hair. With her superpower skills, she makes my very long, very thick hair look rockstar amazing, even after I have left her chair. My hair has always required tedious, frustrating amounts of time to style and look somewhat pretty on a daily basis, until I put it into her trusty hands. Now, with the perfect layers and shaping she does, my hair requires very little effort and always looks great. Huge bonus that she completely respects the length of my hair, and always trims as little as possible, while keeping dead ends at bay. I know other long-haired ladies feel my pain about how difficult it is to find a stylist who won't chop way-too-many inches off your hair. Believe me, give Grace a call. read more

I'm really disappointed with my experience at the salon. I went a year and a half ago to get my hair dyed and the result was great. I went again recently and the result was a disaster. I called to make my appointment with Tamara, and even specified that I wanted to lighten my hair from black to a light brown/blonde color. I showed up with a clear picture of what I wanted, and Tamara briefly looked over the picture. She said she remembered me from last year, briefly asked what I wanted and began mixing up a lightener. Long story short, instead of lightening my hair to a light brown, she bleached my scalp (not even my ends or the middle portion of my hair), dyed all of my hair pitch black and offered no apology. My hair looked nothing like the picture I gave her, and she kept insisting it'd look better after I washed my hair for a few months. My college graduation is next week, so I don't really have that much time to wait! My mom and I asked why this happened, we were just trying to understand what she did because I assumed she was going to lighten all my hair. She became very defensive, told me to wait two months and call her if I still wasn't happy. Then she charged me $150 for a hair color I never wanted! Again, no apology was offered and she wouldn't explain why she dyed my hair when I just wanted it lightened. My mom went back to ask for a refund after we spoke to another stylist at a different salon to get some advice. My mom very kindly asked her why the end result was so different from 1) the picture I brought in and 2) the color job she did on me last time (because I was asking for the same color). Tamara became incredibly defensive, started yelling at her and blamed me for not being a clear communicator. I didn't understand why she never told me she didn't understand what I was asking for when I had the picture and she kept telling me she knew exactly what I wanted. She continued to yell at my mom before rudely offering a refund, which my mom accepted. As my mom was leaving, Tamara yelled at her "You know I spent $30 on product for her hair!!" I was incredibly thrown off by that because I spent $150 on a style I completely hated and was nothing close to what I asked for AND to make that $150, I spent 12 hours taking care of critically ill patients in an ICU. I didn't make it in a 2 hour botch hair job like Tamara. Honestly, I know mess ups and mistakes happen, I know hair styles don't always end up exactly how you want them to be, but I expect stylists to at least work with you and be apologetic about messed up end results. Tamara offered no apology, zero remorse and was incredibly rude about the entire situation. I'd never recommend her to a single friend or family member. read more

After reading SO MANY 5-star reviews a friend and I decided we'd ignore how The Salon appears on the outside, and give them a try. When I realized Tamara worked there I decided on booking with another stylist due to my past unhappiness with Tamera's work. While she seemed to listen, and since I'm pretty easy to please, I couldn't complain too much except to say that she was quite shy when it came to texturizing the ends of my hair (which was the MAIN thing I'd begged her to make sure she did). My friend felt equally as disillusioned. She made the best of it, though. But, I doubt either of us will be rebooking at The Salon. read more

About two years ago, I was having a down day. Can't remember why, but decided a hair cut would cheer me up. I stopped into Fantastic Sams on Erin Drive, which was the closest location to my house. I was fortunate enough to have Layne do my hair. Not only did she do a great job, her personality added to her goodness. She is very talented and friendly to make you feel at ease. She listens and asks you what you want. I appreciate that, as most stylist just want to do what they want to do! I now have my husband going to her and he loves her as well. We recently moved and it is a long drive, now that Layne has moved to the Midtown location, but well worth it. I give her a five star! When I would go to the Erin Drive location, everyone there was very friendly, however, now that I'm a patron of the midtown location, not the case. Especially the manager, I think her name is Lisa. She does hair some of the time but I'd never let her take a scissors to mine. She looks at you like, "What are you doing here?' She is not friendly at all and always looks like a sourpuss. I didn't even know that this place existed until recently. I got a couple of bad haircuts (and not-so-great customer service) at Empire, and KNEW I had to find my old stylist. Grace used to do my hair at Hi Gorgeous a couple of years ago -- and thanks to Yelp, found out she was at The Salon. I booked an appointment stat. It was great being in her chair again! The salon itself is small and unassuming; you won't find it a marvel of interior design, but you will be pleased at the talented stylists and excellent customer service. First, Grace gave me a smashing haircut and then styled it nicely for an event. My appointment was at 10am but the style stayed intact until 11pm when I unraveled my hair. It's been a year since my initial leap from long hair to short. It has also been that long I've tried to find someone here in Memphis who can duplicate, or at least come close to, the initial hair artistry performed by Taj at Dej Salon (Sherman Oaks, CA). After visiting various salons that "specialize" in ALL hair types (I'm biracial with curly/wavy hair) and whose prices ranged from affordable to "I just paid WHAT for THIS?! f*#k!!!" I had given up on maintaining my chic, short style in Memphis. Then, a neighbor recommended The Salon to me as my last-ditch effort. Well, the Universe wanted me to keep my short hair, I guess. I went to The Salon and had a consultation with Angel. She asked me a few questions, looked over my hair and stated with confidence she'd be able to cut it exactly the way I wanted it. First, of course, she'd fix my most recent butcher job and we'd proceed from there. And she did. *Haaaaaaallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, haaaaaaaaaallelujah, halleeeeAYlujah* After a year of searching, I have found my stylist. Thank you, Angel. I am beyond shocked this place has a 5 star rating. It is very misleading. This has by far been the worst hair cut I have ever had in my life! I made an appointment here based on reviews, and wish I did not. I asked for a trim to be consistent with my already medium length layered hair. I received a 3 layer blunt cut. Basically, she grabbed a top layer, cut straight across, then a middle layer , cut straight across, etc. It has taken at least 2 other cuts from another stylist to correct the cut, so I am still able to wear it in a pony tail to hide it. I would NEVER recommend this place. read more

Being recently relocated to Memphis, I've been on the hunt for a new hair salon. Looking at all the rave reviews on here I decided to give The Salon a try. Grace cut my hair and it looked fine as I walked out the door, but after getting home and styling it myself, I noticed that a good portion around one side of the front of my face had been chopped off! I was stunned. My hair grows super slow and it's literally 1-2 inches long from the scalp of my head! I had asked for a simple side bang and thankfully I have enough hair to pull over it, but I have never had my hair cut this badly before. I would not go back and I would caution anyone before allowing her to cut your hair. I wish I had never gone. read more

I went to The salon for the first time and I love it. I called and booked an appointment on Saturday and was able to get in the next hour. When I called and booked the appointment, Grace picked up and sounded so welcoming and nice, so when I got there I already felt comfortable. Edit: It's been five years and I am finally leaving Memphis; I will miss the Barbecue Shop, Melanie's Soul Food, and Tamara at The Salon on Madison. She is really communicative: she asks what you want, clarifies that what she is going to do is what you actually want, and gets to business. I have recommended her to numerous friends with high-maintenance hair and they have loved the results. I came here as a college student and also note that Tamara gives great college discounts if you'll tell her you're in college. Even sans discount, this place is one of the fairest priced places in town--much cheaper than Hi-Gorgeous, Dabbles, etc.... It may only be two bucks more than Fantastic Sam's across the street, gentlemen, so do yourself a favor and upgrade. She is also fun to talk to and usually has good information on local events, music, and food. That said, please come see her if you're new to town (like I did five years ago!) and ask some questions about Memphis while getting yo' hair did. ;-) read more

I'll start by saying I'm currently working a 14 hour drive from home and last month I flew home for a day to get my hair cut. Grace has been cutting my hair for 5 years and I'm not letting anyone in Maryland touch it so I just went home for a cut bc she is that good. And my coworkers were sad that my beautiful hair came from Memphis and they can't go get it. The Salon is not a fancy place, it's a Midtown place. But I've paid ridiculous amounts of money in the "best" salons in several major cities only to leave w a cut that wasn't worth $12, let alone $120. I'm not paying for sparkly ambiance, I'm paying to wake up daily with good hair. And truly, I would let Grace cut my hair behind a dumpster if that was where she chose to set up her chair. The prices are more than reasonable, the cuts are great and the salon has an old family beauty shop in the city feel. If what you want from your hair cut is a snooty man w frosted tips to greet you with a robe and then chop up your hair however he wants, keep looking. If you want your hair to feel happy and magical, come here. read more

I recently moved into the downtown area and was looking for a decent haircut for a reasonable price. I found "The Salon" using google and thought I would give it a try. I cannot recall the name of the specific hair stylist that cut my hair, but I told her that I wanted a pretty simple men's haircut. Essentially, I told her to take a little length off (aka nothing special). The stylist and I had a very nice conversation while she cut my hair. At the end of the haircut, the stylist did not ask me what I thought. She did not even offer me a mirror to look at the hair on the back of my head. She started ushering up to the front to pay the bill. I, however, requested a mirror to look at the back. I decided that the back looked fine, but she still never asked for any feedback from me. I was a little perplexed by this fact, but I decided to pay the bill and get on with my day. After 3 to 4 days, I noticed that there were several places that were not even close to being even. In fact, my significant told me that the haircut looked bad and insisted that I go to another salon to get it fixed. I did visit another salon, and I am much more pleased with the result. Overall, the stylist at "The Salon" did take a little length off, but she did not spend any time making it look good/symmetrical. I would rank the location and the atmosphere in "The Salon" as very good. I realize that I only had an experience with a single stylist, but I would rate that experience as very poor. I hope that she was simply having an off day. I will not be returning to this salon. read more
