    Braids

Great service ... quick and detailed. They had 2 people work at one time on my service. Braids lasted 3 months and I was still getting compliments. It's a busy place so come prepared with headphones, battery pack ,charger just in case. Lol. They take walk-ins so that's a plus plus for me. Lastly know how to advocate for yourself you have no one to blame but yourself oftentimes if you don't demand what you are paying for. Ask for them not to braid you tight, watch and ask what they are putting in your hair, if there's something you prefer hair, gel etc bring that with you.

In early August I went to this place because my sister-in-law had her hair braided there and it looked really good. Grant it, she and I have different types of hair. My hair is very fine and hers is more curly than mine. I lost a lot of hair when I went through chemo treatments for colorectal cancer so it's very thin. It's an extremely busy place with probably 20 or more women braiding hair. Unless you know a particular braider, you just get whoever is available. The woman who braided my hair looked like she was about 50 years old. I assumed she was experienced and knew how to evaluate what I needed based on my hair type. I didn't do my research to be able to articulate exactly what my hair needed or exactly what I wanted. I just knew I liked my SIL hair. That part is on me. If you're a professional, you should know how to determine what specific types of hair need. First, she braided such thin sections of my hair with braids that were a tad thick for my thin hair. They were slipping off by the third week. The stuff she put on each braid was far too thick for my hair. When the braids started falling off I realized that the stuff that was used (some kind of wax or gel in a black jar) would not come out of my hair. I went back to the salon to tell them what was going on and was told that I would have to soak my hair in conditioner to get that stuff and the buildup on it loosened then comb it out. Mind you, the day I got my hair braided I asked the lady about how to care for my hair and what to do for it. It's been nearly 30 years since I've had my hair braided. I didn't experience any of what I'm experiencing now. I'm taking all of these braids out now and that gook is impossible to get out. I've tried several different ways of getting it out and it is so hard it's not budging. I don't know what to do now. Also, it costs $220 and I tipped very well. I didn't realize until I got outside that that woman had left hair all over my back. That was totally unprofessional. She should have gotten that hair off my back. I am not happy with my experience and I don't know what I'm going to do about my hair. I will never go back there again.

Great authentic and professional braids. True African hair stylists, I expect to be there for at least 6 hours and she was able to do my entire braids in less than 4 hours!! Amazing without the pain and after I took it off there was no damage to my hair! Loved

Very rude and the lady that did my hair didn't add color like I asked after she had already started on my hair.

They were on time for my appt, called me to confirm the hair color and got my box braids done fast when I told them I needed to be at work at 3.

Great place to get a perfect haircut. I miss her greatly while in Florida. She knows what she is…read moredoing.

Reasons I love the Salon:…read more 1. I totally forgot about an appointment. Not only did Grace book me for her next opening, she was nice to me and gave me a great haircut even though I TOTALLY VAMPED on my first appointment. Also, I called her as my school was freaking out over a tornado warning to let her know I'd be late to my second appointment, and she was very nice about it and said she would wait and just to call when the storm warning was over to check in about whether we could meet that day or reschedule. (As it turned out, I was only going to be about 10 minutes late, and she was able to see me that day). 2. No negative gossipy-vibe here, and no pressure to tell Grace my life story. I really appreciate a stylist who is friendly and kind, but not trying to force some intimate connection at our first meeting. Maybe it's the difference between 20 year-old me and 30-something year-old me, but I don't need a new best friend every time I get a haircut. 3. Grace really listened to me. I went in with a chin-length bob, which a stylist at another salon had given me when I showed her a picture of a much-shorter cut for my very-curly hair. Grace instantly saw what I wanted, and was enthusiastic about helping me go from long to short. Three weeks later, and I still love this haircut, whether I blow-dry it or not. Grace was also careful not to badmouth the stylist who gave me the dreaded shoulder-bob, affording her the benefit of the doubt. "Maybe," she said, "she'd had someone cry in her chair that day, and she was worried you didn't really want to go short." But I did, and Grace helped me, and I will be back again and again! Practical tip: You can park in the lot behind the Gilmore and go in the back door (watch your step going in) or on the street on Madison.
