Seedy square; sticky floor; questionable characters just add to the ambiance. Raising a glass to commemorate our last night in Portugal on another memorable European getaway.

A quick Portugal experience. The lineups move fast. Cash only. There's a few ginjinha spots in town, but this is the oldest and most authentic. €1.55 for each cherry shot. The liqueur is pretty sweet, with a cherry in each shot. Take your shot, return your glass and leave.

I see a long line as I'm ambling thru Lisbon on my last night in Portugal , and wonder what's going on as I stand in the line I see cash only and pull out all my euros The man pouring the drink picks it 1.50 in euros I get a little shot glass with three cherries and I eat them. They are not tasty The drink is delightful I read later it is Ginjinha Made from brandy or fortified wine, sour cherries sugar cinnamon (morello cherries)

Really great ginjinha! It's very sweet but savory! There are no seats but it's still good to take shots together on the street.

you need to drink ginjinha while you're in portugal. this is a famous spot for it, it's very delicious!

During our first day in Lisbon we took a walking tour and near the end we stopped at A Ginjinha for a taste of their cherry liqueur and it really hit the spot. Service here was quick and friendly so even if there's a line it won't take long to get a taste. A Ginjinha is in a little more of a touristy spot than the other recommended Ginjinha location (Ginjinha sem Rival) so the price is slightly higher here, but hey, when in Portugal, do as the Portuguese do and have a sip...it's delicious.

I absolutely loved this spot and the one across the street. Stopped by every single day! Not sugary and sweet like some of the others I have tried. It is smooth and you feel the slight burn in your throat. This one comes with cherries and a place I would recommend over and over. There's always a crowd of tourists but the line moves fast!

The most amazing ginjinha experience in sweet Lisboa! Such a unique, perfectly balanced sweet and tart cherry liqueur. It's a quick counter service, grab and go sort of shot that you can sip on and enjoy after a heavy meal (we had many of those during our trip...). So much rich history here and truly a landmark in Lisbon. Be sure to stop in and grab a shot! You can slowly sip on the shot outside while admiring the square and taking in the views - return the glass to the counter when done. Obrigada A Ginjinha!

Don't miss this, one of the original spots for purchasing your shot of ginjinha. It's a sour cherry liqueur that like vodka is Russian and ouzo is Greek, ginjinha is the national spirit of Portugal. And be sure you get it WITH the cherries. They have pits but they come out easily enough in your mouth. The only excuse for not drinking it is if you're a recovering alcoholic. Otherwise, drink up. There's nothing else like it. It was €1.45 a shot when I was here in January 2022. Totally worth it. [Review 16644 overall - 159 in Portugal - 155 of 2022.]

When researching my trip to Portugal, I read that ginjinha is popular here, which is a cherry liqueur. I happened to find this spot on Google Maps because it was right around the corner form our hotel, and had great reviews. We popped on over for a try one night after dinner at around 9:30 on a Thursday. It's a hole in the wall, so there are no seats but it was still pretty busy. The walls are lined with bottles and bottles of ginjinha. You can order it with or without a cherry, then you bring it outside to sip, and just return the glass to them afterwards. I must say that I liked it better than I thought I would, especially since I don't love cherry-flavored things. It was sweet and tart at the same time. It reminded me of cranberry or pomegranate juice (but with some alcohol in it). It's definitely a digestiv to be having after a meal because it's so sweet. Plus, I think each small glass (maybe about 1.5 shots worth) was only €2.50, which was pretty cheap. I'm sure they have these types of ginjinha bars everywhere but if you're in the area, this is a good one to stop by.

    Unique taste...strong

This Portuguese Landmark should be on your checklist of places to visit when in Lisbon! This is the famous sweet cherry liqueur that is a Portuguese tradition! It definitely has a unique taste! This countertop location is in Rossio Square and you'll be able to spot it usually by the long lines! The cost is 1.40 Euro...it is served with or without cherries! I had it with the cherries! While on my trip...I have had this several more times-my favorite was in a chocolate cup! Yes..it is a tourist thing..but guess what--if you don't live in Lisbon--you are a tourist--do get in line and try it! Lol

This is the spot you come to

Came here multiple times during my visit to Lisbon. Apparently this location has been around for 70 years so it's a must do! Gunjinha is a cherry like fruit that they make wine with and it's very tasty. It's an inexpensive shot about .80 euros. I remember someone telling me these shots should not be more than 1.30 euros or else you are getting ripped off! You are supposed to drink it after eating since it helps with digestion. It's a strong alcohol content so be careful because it can sneak up on you!

Ginjinha or Ginja is a famous Portuguese liquor made of cherries that are fermented in Brandy. Then sugar, water and cinnamon are added. They always ask if you want it with or without fruit (we had it with) I really enjoyed it, it's sweet so I liked it at the end of a meal. This is supposed to be the oldest and most authentic form of ginja but I did go to another location that I liked to! This place is very inexpensive, it's tiny and the man who serves you is kind but only speaks Portuguese! It's a must while in Lisbon!

Alright, next up on my semi-overwhelming remaining list of cool places I went to when I was in…read morePortugal a couple months ago - one of three distinct, very similar spots to try locally made craft ginja, so obviously I made a crawl of it and tried all three in a row, the first day I got to Lisbon. All three are, similarly, very tiny bars, basically just alcoves, no seating, large enough to fit a couple people standing inside if it's raining, which it was. Not a spot people stick around a long time at, which is reasonable, since all they sell are cheap shots of ginja, and to-go bottles of ginja. Well, in this case, uniquely, they also sell a second, more complex liqueur called Eduardino, one reason I'd give the crown to this stop over A Ginjinha around the block, though I also think I liked the ginja here a *hair* more than A Ginjinha. Both great, though. (You can skip Ginginha do Carmo. :p) The ginja, like their most direct competitor's, is quite fruity, and sweet, but not overly so. The one here is also *particularly* smooth. Their second product, Eduardino, apparently invented here in 1908 (I just looked it up) is an anise-infused ginja that doesn't taste anything like ginja, but does taste like a great, complex, sweet anise liqueur, that I imagine would be *wonderful* in cocktails that call for absinthe as a modifier, or probably also as a swap for Benedictine or any of those more famous sweet/herbal liqueurs, if you're a cocktail nerd like me. Though here, obviously, they just sell it neat or in bottles. It is also pretty tasty served neat. I wish I'd had room to bring back a full 750 bottle of each, instead of just a 200 ml bottle (I had most of a suitcase already earmarked for Port wine), but I was glad they *sold* 200 ml bottles!

It's the same set up as the other spot - it's a small stall, the line moves fast, and it's cash only. One of the differences is that there were small standing tables outside so you could hangout for a bit if you wanted to. The other difference is the taste of the ginja - I found their version to be less sweet and more smooth than the other, older stall across the street. I preferred Sem Rival's version a bit more actually! At the same exact price (1.55 euros) and in the same area, you might as well try both and come to your own conclusion.
