I came back here at least 2-3 times because it was a unique and interesting experience. The ginjinha is sweet and syrupy, but not too sweet like other places I've tried. It's also right next door to my favorite pastel de nata store, Nata Portuguesa, so I could get both fixes in one trip. Most people recommend the ginjinha with the cherry but I prefer it without. The drink is filled to the brim and I have shaky hands so it would get sticky and messy sometimes. But the store is prepared and has a little sink inside on the right to rinse off.

Ah, I remember this historic spot from my first trip to Lisbon 16 years ago. My young tour guide…read moreback then took me here to have a cup (actually a shot) of ginjinha, the traditional Portuguese sour cherry liqueur. When Jamie W and I inadvertently walked by recently on our first evening in Lisbon, I realized we needed to stop and do the same thing. I had next to no memory of it, just that it didn't kill me. Jamie was rather hesitant, but I just showed my typical insolence and walked up to the proprietor behind the counter. He was already in mid-pour, and I actually remembered to say "com elas" to indicate we wanted cherries in our drinks. They were only 1,50€ per cup (Photo 8). We sipped them in seconds. The puckery flavor led to a nice finish. We were on our way in less than five minutes. DRINK - 4 stars...if sour cherry is your thing, have at it AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...just an open door and a bottle SERVICE - 3.5 stars - he pours and collects, though he liked the way I said "com elas" TOTAL - 4 stars...a must-do ritual for any tourist in Lisbon RELATED - Exploring Lisbon? We had stopped by this location a few days before and Sophia warmly introduced herself and made us feel welcome. We had such a positive interaction with Sophia that we came back to see Sophia and taste some wines and fortified wines. Sophia was extremely knowledgeable and curated a delightful wine tasting experience for us both. We were extremely impressed by her extensive historical knowledge of Portuguese wine and wine makers. Her professionalism and expertise allowed us to experience and taste some of the best wines this country has to offer. We even ended up purchasing our new favorite Vintage port made by Vallado.

Based on my experience, the acores gin was about one and a half times more than I've been able to find elsewhere, but still better than running around town at the last minute to find quality items. The store is well organized and has a classic look. I mentioned needing the tax refund, which wasn't included. Kind of a fail.

And finally Peixinhos da horta, or fish of the garden. Which turns out to be tempura fried green beans. They were also very good. If you are a tourist, the staff will gladly help you fill out the tax refund form. They will then stamp the form and you can collect your money after going through immigration. Sadly we didn't know how to navigate the system, and our luggage were too full anyway I didn't entertain the idea of having to shove things in one more time.
