First, to clear things up, there are three different locations for Garrafeira Nacional in Lisbon (Santa Justa, Conceição, and Ribeira Market), this listing is for the Conceição location. All three locations are downtown, near the meat of the tourism activities, but they are different locations.
Portugal is known for its vinho verde which, despite its name, is not a grape variety, but rather a region, that covers red / white / rosé / sparkling / brandy / etc., not just "green" or white wine. Portugal is also famous for its astounding port. So there is a lot of specialty territory to wade through, and in an unfamiliar language. One needs to be able to rely on a trustworthy guide to wade through the huge selection in this store. The associates at Garrafeira Nacional REALLY know their wines. They are very friendly, very helpful, and very down-to-earth for wine people.
We were pressed for time, trying to make it various places before they closed, so I quickly asked for a good dry white vinho verde, reasonably priced, to take home to friends. The associate helped me to a label that friends at home ended up loving, so I am very glad I asked his advice. I looked the vintner up on wine rating sites after I left, and was happy to see solid 4-star reviews, as well as comparable prices, meaning no mark-up for the fact that this is a specialty shop in the heart of Lisbon. Very impressed.
Also, my associate sold this white to me as a 2017, but then discovered what was on the shelf for that price was 2016, so he actually went through his stock to find me the younger 2017, to honor his word, which was above and beyond decency. (I would not have even noticed because the year was very small on the bottle, and I would have just trusted he gave me what he said he did.) Also, the 2017 vintage had better reviews than the 2016, so it mattered, and I am grateful.
Other Garrafeira Nacional reviews tout this store as "the best in Lisbon," and while I did not shop wine all over the city, I can say I was very, very pleased with my experience, and would recommend trusting them to give you a quality wine, at a very fair price, and know that you, or your giftees, will be pleased with what you bought. read more
