By all means avoid this kid. I had my two Zwilling knives (made in Germany) and one scissor (made in Japan) that needed to be sharpened for the first time. Since Brian in West Covina, who was one of the best, has retired, I googled to find a reputable sharpener around my area. And I contacted this kid and asked his address to bring them. But he didn't respond to me until the next day. In hindsight, I should have sought another guy at that moment because one who is poor at communication is usually also poor at his profession. I drove to Fullerton and a young guy came out from his house, and asked whether I would wait or pick it up later. Since I knew from my experience that it would take about an hour, I said I would wait in my car. Waiting an hour is no problem for me. Surprisingly he came out in ten minutes, saying that since mine were really good ones, he could finish the job so quickly, which made me a little nervous. However, since we were on the street holding knives, I thought that it would be awkward to check them there. And I wanted to trust him. Even if things go wrong, I believed there would be a recourse. So I payed $20 for ten minutes labor and left his place. Back home, when I checked the knives, I found that his job was very shoddy, to put it mildly. As is clearly visible from the pictures below, it was simply unacceptable. I immediately contacted him and then he insisted that since I was waiting outside he could not have done the job as best as he could. But the fact is that I NEVER asked him to get it done as quickly as possible. Furthermore, as is visible from the picture, the Chef's Knife (10 inch), which cost about $200, looked damaged. But he would not admit any failure, insisting it was manufactured as such. Since it was Thanksgiving weekend, I wanted to resolve this issue in a good spirit. I texted him to make an appointment to re-sharpen them. I've given him five days to respond in vain. Apparently, he chose not to respond at all. I believe this kid must not practice this job. Sharpening requires a proper training and experience, which evidently is lacking in this kid. His skill failed, his communication failed, and his work ethic failed me. Seeing that Cutting Edge Knife Sharpening runs business in many places, I suspect that they recruit people working at home without a proper training, like Uber business model. I contacted Zwilling to seek their opinion, and if needed, to order sharpening service. They replied that it needs to be replaced. End of the story. read more

Nick is a really "sharp" guy (pun intended), he sharpened my go to chef knife to a level I have never experienced before (in over 20 years). It is of a brand that is very hard steel, so Nick worked on the knife until it could slice a tomato from the outer skin without any difficulty. It is amazing, I had given up long ago and bought a separate serrated knife for tomatoes.
