I'm so happy to have found Arnie, the owner and sharpener of both The Sharpening Factory and Knife and Scissors Sharpening. I made my way out to the SoCo farmers market early morning to catch him to sharpen my 2 hair-cutting shears. He educated me on the types of shears I had and the his process in sharpening them with all of the different tools he had. Upon pickup, he had me check how well they cut with human hair extensions he had ready so that he could make any needed adjustments. Long story short, I brought expensive shears I had bought preowned not realizing that they may have been sharpened incorrectly before so he had to fix somebody else's work. He was so kind and didn't make me feel bad about it and was overall just so pleasant to work with. I don't enjoy blemishing business' ratings, but after my experience today with Arnie at the SoCo Mix Farmer's market, it's hard not to share my experience. I brought a pocket knife in as a tester to see if I wanted Arnie to sharpen my whole kitchen knife set. Between the mediocre sharpening and Arnie's attitude when I brought to his attention that the bevel he left wasn't uniform, I can't recommend his service. My knife was literally sharper before I brought it in. In my opinion, the biggest downfall with this service is that it's done on grinding wheels. Getting a sharp edge from a rotating disc of abrasives is difficult if not impossible. 3 minutes on my Amazon whetstone did a better job (and I know that my sharpening skills aren't that great). read more

Long story short, my knife was a little unusual, so he couldn't sharpen it in his normal way. But he still helped me out. He didn't have to, but he went the extra mile and did something out of his normal process to help me out. Very fair price and was able to do it in a very reasonable time. (Note, the wait time is dependent on the crowd, though, so it is helpful to pick an off peak time if you're able to) read more

I took some of my Wusthof knives to the South Coast Collection Mall (SOCO Mix) in Costa Mesa to be sharpened during the Saturday morning Farmer's Market. I dropped them off in the morning, then spent a few hours dining and shopping while my knives waited their turn. He is very busy, so you can't just show up at 1:45 p.m. with your knives because he won't have time, you need to get them there at least a few hours ahead. I guarantee the wait will be worth it! My knives slice like when they were new, and he even discussed with me how to use the honing rod (who knew what that thing was for?!!) and the qualities of a good cutting board. Ok, this sort of thing rarely happens. My wife and I rescue and foster dogs from the shelter. We rehabilitate them in our home then work with a non-profit organization to find them a forever home with a loving family. Each and every dog we have brought in we have fallen in love with and it completely breaks our heart to see them go. But, we justify the emotion each time by having the ability to turn around and go rescue another dog from death row. Anyway, my point is...in many cases I have to shave these dogs down initially so we can clean them up and get them on a regular grooming schedule. I had invested in a nice oster clipper and a couple clipper blades but low and behold these things get dull fast. So, I googled clipper sharpening service and saw a number for a local business(the one for which I am writing a review of course) and a gentleman by the name of Arnie answered. I explained to Arnie what I needed and he asked how many blades I had. Me not being in the grooming business or hairstyle business I was afraid he would not be interested in helping me. But I explained in short what I use the clippers for and he immediately told me he would sharpen them for me at no charge. Seriously? Really? He is going to sharpen for us this weekend, I am sure they will turn out great. But I just had to write a review after I got off the phone with him. BEWARE: This guy does NOT know how to handle serrated edges. I took in a pair of vintage serrated kitchen shears, and he completely ground off the serrations, and didn't even try to sharpen them correctly, even though I let him know that the shears required special angled sharpening and to be careful of the serrations. Ruined the scissors, cost effective but not good quality work if you have something special. read more
