After reading all the great reviews about this place, I decided to drop by to get a quotation for upholstering a nice vintage chair I own. I probably dropped by at least five times here but never had the chance to talk to anyone. Was the store close when I dropped by? No, the store was wide open but no one was in sight. I was even able to get in and take pictures of the place but didn't see a soul in here. You can see in the pictures I've taken what this place look like. Fabrics, pillows,and samples were all in disarray. Inventory piled up everywhere. The supposed to be display window became storage. The store has a lot of potential but they seriously need total clean up of the store. And please, have someone by the door to greet potential customers. I shopped around in our neighborhood and found this place . I walked in and met with Maria who is the owner. She was really nice and you can tell she knows her stuff. I showed her the picture of my sofa and immediately she could tell how much fabric I needed and was impressed she could tell me how much yardage I would need. It was exactly the same measurement I've gotten from someone who actually came to our house to measure. Her price was so reasonable. She also told me it would take 2-3 weeks for the job. Amazingly we got our sofa back in less than 2 weeks!! I couldn't be more happier with our new reupholstered sectional sleeper sofa. Almost everything in my house has been reupholstered by Maria and her crew. Beautiful work. I recommend her and her team to everyone. Recently, I took a chair and matching footstool to her and asked her to reupholster. She looked at it and said "Why do you want to reupholster this? It looks good to me!" She suggested ways to clean the leather (I thought it was vinyl!), dye the rubbed off spots with shoe dye, and repair the torn strap at the bottom of the seat. She said she does not work with leather (due to cost) and that the vinyl she would use would be much less comfortable to the skin than the leather already on the chair/footstool. So, I spent about 1 1/2 hours and refurbished my furniture and saved $600. How many upholsterers would advise you this way? Besides being good at her craft, she's honest. read more

I have taken two Mid-Century pieces to Maria now and both have come out better than I expected. The first was a rare Eames high back lounger that I refinished myself. Maria made recommendations that I did not think of and they were spot on! Not only did the cushions turn out fantastic, her prices were way below the competition. She was great to work with as well. Maria also threw in liners and a headrest cover for free because I would have not thought of them. She has used great fabrics on my pieces as well. Same thing when I took my Mid-Century daybed to her for new cushions last month. At least $200 less then the closest estimate from elsewhere. Yep, she's getting busy, but I was totally satisfied with the turnaround time. AND, get this - when I discovered I might have made a measurement mistake, Maria reconfigured the cushions FOR FREE!. Maria does wonderful work. My very old club chair which had been used as a scratching post for my cat (since passed) is now brand new. I had been shopping for a new chair and could find nothing even close to the beautiful chair I now have. The place may be a little messy, but the work is not. A long long time ago, when I was a child, my mother worked in a slipcover shop and it was way more messy than Maria's place. Maria told me she was very busy and it might take 2 1/2 weeks, but it was delivered in one week. Since this chair is the only seating in my living room, I really appreciated the speed. I love this place! They are super talented! Almost everyone in our family, immediate and extended use "A Better Quality Upholstery". They re-did a leather ottoman, the piping was pristine and the filling just right, not to soft or firm. Comfortable! I had my husband drop of a settee, new hammock cushion and two dog bed cushions. I had my own fabric, which I ordered to match the pillows on my current sofa, and the dog cushions as well to match as well. And the fabric to match my sunbrella outdoor cushions. I unfortunately caught covid and have to quarantine, so they are patiently waiting. Once I get my items I promise to post pictures, you'll be impressed, I promise! I have been dealing with Maria Martinez for several years now; she's upholstered cushions and several bolsters. Most of the time, the work that her staff does is fine; sometimes not so much, but nonetheless. Five months ago, I took her a sketch for six cushions. After I gave her the dimensions that I wanted, she told me how much material to buy. I bought the requisite amount and dropped it off at her store. One, two, three and a half months went by and no phone call. I finally called her and she said they'd been ready for weeks. Strike one. I went to pick up the cushions: she'd only made four and they were the wrong dimensions. After calling her...because she's rarely actually in the store...she said that I didn't bring her enough fabric. We went back and forth about how I had brought her exactly what she'd asked for and if there wasn't enough fabric why in heaven's name hadn't she called me to tell me instead of making four incorrect cushions which I was going to be somewhat hard pressed to make do. "Oh, I don't know." Strike two. I went to purchase more fabric, but they were out of the original and I had to settle for a complementary fabric. I took the new fabric to Maria with the agreed upon deal that, instead of having her make six new cushions with the originally requested dimensions on her dime because of her serious miscommunication with me, which cost me time and money; she AGREED to make two new cushions with the new fabric for free. After two and half more weeks of waiting with no call, I called her last week...today is 7/19...and was told they would be ready by Monday. I asked her again on that call, for good measure and so there was no misunderstanding, would these cushions be free to me? "Oh, yes. Oh, yes." My part-time gal just now went to retrieve the cushions and was told by Maria to pay her $34.00. My gal called me and Maria was...her word...obnoxious to her. Maria then called me and demanded $34.00. I reiterated her error in fabric amount, her lack of being able to deliver items in a timely fashion, her lack of a call to me to let me know that there wasn't enough fabric, and most importantly, her agreement to make these cushions for free...certainly in light of the fact that I wasn't asking her re-do all six. Nope...she wanted her money or she wasn't going to release the cushions. She wanted to know how any of this was her fault. When I told her exactly how it was her fault, she simply demanded her money. Strike three...she's out. Needless to say, I will never be going back. I advise anyone needing upholstery services to look elsewhere...save yourself time and money and incredible aggravation in dealing with "obnoxious." Update: My gal went back to get the pillows as I was calling the Better Business Bureau (they have a new name, but whatever.) Maria Martinez now demanded $44.00. Not only is Maria Martinez a dishonest individual, she now simply makes up prices no matter what she's already quoted (or, in my case, extorted.) read more

I gave her my requirements and told her my budget and the amount of yards I needed and she said she had plenty of fabric for me to choose from. I drove 1 hour and got there and the ONLY fabric she had was 3x to 10x the budget we discussed. She is a scam artist and will sucker you into the store to try and strong arm you. Go anywhere else. I have had Maria reupholster my antique dinning room chairs, make Pillows for my sofa, an reupholster my wrought iron kitchen chairs. All have turned out wonderful. I used to work for a high end manufacturer who did upholstery and I consider myself very picky when it comes to the proper application of fabric. Don't let the messy shop scare you aware. The quality of workmanship is good and the prices are reasonable. Not to mention she is usually done in around a week. I always bring in my own fabric, so I can't not speak to her selection. You can go on line to Mood Fabrics and have samples sent to you, they are not too expensive or you can drive to the west side and pick something out. Remember to consider the direction on the fabric when calculating how much you need if there is a pattern on the fabric. There is a reason I keep going back. That is the quality of the work. My neighbors also had their retro club chairs redone. They also came out great. read more

Maria, the owner of the business, was an absolute delight to work with...patient, helpful, knowledgable, and extremely skilled. She has a great selection of fabrics and samples if you don't have your own. She also let me and my wife borrow a booklet of fabric to determine the texture, color, and design we wanted for our couch. My old couch was tattered and broken. I think it was about 40 years old (mid century) but it looked like it had aged in dog years. I dubbed the old couch Keith Richards as a joke. No one except me could see that it was made from excellent wood. Finding the right upholsterer to bring out my couch's inner beauty was paramount. Maria and her team of expert upholsterers did exactly that! We have a very large chaise lounge that needed reupholstering so we went to a shop near us. They sent a person out to measure the piece and after numerous measurements and calculations they gave us a figure of $1870. My gut instinct told me to look elsewhere. We took a few photos on our iPad and drove over to Burbank and showed Maria of A Better Quality Upholstery the pictures. She never saw the lounge chair in person. Unsatisfied with Maria(the owner) and her service, she rather have an unhappy customer and an extra $20.00 in her pocket. I brought in a couch to have a section repaired and was told it would take a week to repair. After having it for exactly week, she calls to tell me the fabric swatch we originally matched and agreed on was not the right color when it came in(?) so I had to go find and buy fabric else where to bring to her to do the work. I didn't think it was unfair, since I had to use my time, gas and additional money to get the fabric, that I thought the price should be reduced that amount of what I spent. She would not and said I could take the couch and leave if I wasn't happy. If I had a truck I would have. She would rather have me unhappy than discount me $20.00! Then when the couch was done I wanted a yard of the fabric that wasn't used, since I payed for it, and that was another argument I lost. I asked who the owner was and she said she was. The supplies and material is such a small portion of the price, the majority of it is the labor so to loose $20.00 to have a happy customer should be worth it-not so much to her. read more
