As an American living in Austria, I get to frequently travel to neighboring countries for food, drink, the sites and fun. A recent trip took me to Venice to visit a friend. A colleague of mine had suggested A Beccafico for dinner, as she had been there just weeks before. Local flavour that the tourists don't know about. We arrived at around 9 without a reservation(not reccomended), but the owner(who was working hard in supporting his staff) eagerly greeted us and told us to come back in about 45 minutes and he would have a table for us. After several drinks at a nearby bar we ventured back to the restaurant to be seated in a great atmosphere. Venice in the winter time is quite different from the summer with less tourists and more locals venturing out. This place was definetly local flavour at the sounds of Italian were all around us. After looking through the menu, the owner came to take our order, but when we asked for an English menu, he responded...'I am your English menu!, what do you like'....we responded with our own ideas of Italian cuisine likes and he was so great at putting together an order that was tailor made :). And when I ordered around a 30Euro bottle of wine, he immediately changed it to a better wine he felt complimented the dinner better! The food was anything short of great, the service was anything short of exemplementary as we were attended to by 3 to 4 employees. The owner even brought our meals to us. When we went to order another bottle of the same wine he had suggested, he changed it to another wine from Sicily(where he was from) and charged the same price. A bottle of Lemoncello and a bottle of sweet wine were complimentary and after staying until close a glass of Grappa was given. A wonderful experience for around 50Euro per person that is HIGHLY recommended! read more
