DO NOT CALL THIS COMPANY!!! They will extort you, send you an estimate for one amount but then find…read moreother issues while installing the over priced part you agreed to, because you were left for a week without heat (after having already been out to inspect the heater once before) and the cost will double. My mother-in-law called them because her heater was making a loud noise. They came and shut off her heat and told her they'd be back in 2 days. Then at that time she got a text message telling her to shut something off, or push a button. She did and then they were under staffed and couldn't come out. After 6 days of my 80 year old mother-in-law living in a house without heat (her house was sub 50 degrees) they sent her an invoice for $360 because she apparently needed a pump and they said her heater would not turn back on without it (even though it worked prior to them turning it off). She was freezing so she just said as long as it was today. They were at her house within an hour (ironic since they were SOOO busy the first 6 days...). Then, the estimate DOUBLED while the tech was at her house as he said he found a gas leak (the house did begin to smell like gas AFTER the first tech turned off the heat). (I should say the 2nd tech was EXTREMELY understanding and helpful. He also confirmed that the gas leak was NOT reported by the 1st tech and the 1st tech was a new guy.) My mother-in-law agreed to it but called us. While we were on the phone with her the tech said that to fix all the problems he found this time (again someone had already been out there to inspect before) it would be $1500!!!!!!!!!!!! My mother-in-law started crying because she couldn't afford it but she couldn't handle being cold any longer. I called the company, the receptionist told me she wasn't able to make any decisions and would have her manager call me back. Then my husband went to talk to the technician at my MIL's house and he told us that she was delayed due to their high volume of customer's with larger (dollar amount) problems. I called the company back and asked to speak to the owner/manager. The receptionist denied my request and told me she never told me she wasn't authorized and that they have all their calls recorded. She told me they had record of calling my MIL every day to schedule the service but we have phone logs showing my MIL called them every day. She told me we were going to sign a waiver to release them from liability of the gas leak. When I said we wouldn't sign it, so she said she was pulling the techs from the job and hung up on me. When I called back, she again told me they were leaving the job (my husband who was with the technicians confirmed that they had tried to recall the techs from the job and my son had been recording EVERYTHING from their interactions with the techs) and refused to get me in touch with the manager or owner. I said I have read numerous reviews who said the owner was a man of integrity and I had seen negative reviews retracted after speaking with him. She again told me she was pulling the techs and tried to hang up on me. I told her I didn't want that and maybe if I could speak to someone who was authorized to discuss these matters with me (and not lie to me about what was or was not said on recorded phone calls as I am 100% SURE they will justify MY side of the story and not hers) maybe we would sign it but not without discussing these very unethical practices with someone who did have authority, and the person who would actually be impacted by our response to this distress (not someone being a complete brat and who didn't comprehend the severity of the situation). I was put on hold for about 15 minutes but then told she would call me back. I haven't heard anything from the company since. I believe this occurred intentionally to extort my mother-in-law. I also think the initial tech was responsible for the gas leak (whether intentionally or accidentally I can't say). Because they were not clear about what was needed, and they kept delaying her, she didn't have time to get a 2nd opinion or compare prices. We will be taking this up with the BBB (https://www.bbb.org/file-a-complaint) and the Attorney General as the Department of Justice has a form specifically for Elder Abuse and Elder Financial Exploitation Statutes (https://www.justice.gov/elderjustice/prosecutors/statutes). This is completely immoral, unethical and NOT an action of integrity. I will also be getting someone out to my MIL's to take a look at the gas leak and give us their opinion on how the gas leak came to be.

I will start by saying that Active Heating and Cooling was an absolute JOY to work with from start…read moreto finish. Andrea, Bernard, and Tyrus are a true family business and they gave me a very reasonable estimate, kept to the schedule they provided me, and were extremely respectful to my property and house while working here. They also gave a lot of love to my cat and dog, which is a huge bonus in my book! My review is fairly long, so the TLDR version is: You would be insane to hire any other HVAC company without at least getting a quote from Active Heating and Cooling first. When I started looking for an HVAC company to replace my old gas furnace with a mini-split system, all the big companies that spend a gazillion dollars on advertising were, of course, the first ones to come to mind. I am a little leary of these big companies because I know that they have to pay for all that advertising somehow. So, I called one of the advertising-heavy companies at the recommendation of my sister, who had had a good experience with them. I also called a couple other much smaller companies that had high ratings on Yelp and Google just to get an idea of what the breadth of estimates might look like. I actually ended up getting Active's estimate first just based upon availability, and theirs seemed to be pretty reasonable. They recommended 2 exterior compressor units and 4 interior head units to cover my house, which made a lot of sense. The next estimate I got was a few thousand dollars higher, and for less equipment. This company recommended only 1 exterior compressor unit and 3 interior head units, which would have likely left my main floor lacking in both heating and cooling capabilities. The third company that gave me an estimate was the big-brand one that spends a ton on advertising, and it was very apparent in the quote. This company also recommended only 1 exterior compressor unit and 3 interior head units. Their estimate was 49% higher than Active's and, again, this was for less equipment. When I told them what Active had quoted me, they called their HQ and knocked off $10,000 on the spot. This just tells me that their first quote was padded with massive profits for them. In summary, Active Heating and Cooling knocked it out of the park and I could not be happier with my new mini-split system. In fact, I have already recommended them to several neighbors and friends and one of them is already on the calendar to get mini-spits later this month! I highly recommend that you call the big guys to see what they would charge you but, ultimately, you'll probably end up choosing Active just like I did.

Jim not only came out to our house to give us a comprehensive estimate, he was also the person who did the actual installation. I needed to replace our 18 year old American Standard heat pump but wasn't quite ready to replace our furnace. After thoroughly educating myself on heat pumps, I called 7 different HVAC companies for estimates. I was open to all the top brands. Some of the companies would not replace our heat pump without also replacing our furnace. A couple of companies said that they would flush out our old heat pump lines with nitrogen instead of replacing them. Most companies sent out a salesman to give us an estimate but they were not the ones who would install it. Yesterday Jim from MVH came out to our house and replaced our old heat pump with a new American Standard heat pump. He and his assistant Braden were at our house for over 9 hours doing the work. They meticulously installed our new heat pump, replaced our heat pump line with a new one and replaced the coil on our furnace. Jim removed our broken automatic air filter and designed a slot to fit a standard size disposable air filter. I think they went above and beyond with the installation and their clean up was impeccable. Jim installed a new "smart" thermostat which also qualified for a PSE rebate. Anne, the office manager was so helpful in answering questions I had and in completing the PSE rebate forms and all the paperwork. MVH also had competitive pricing and I saved money with the PSE rebates. Yes, I am very happy that I decided on Mountain Valley Heating and Air to install our new heat pump. This company was also the HVAC company we hired 18 years ago and I highly recommend them!

A Complete Nightmare: Unreliable, Financially Unstable, and Incompetent. Do Not Hire…read more I hired this company in late September 2025 to replace two furnaces and install heat pumps, a job worth over $25,000. What followed has been the single most stressful service experience of my life. Here is the timeline of their failure: No-Show & Excuses: They were scheduled to install on Sept 26th. They didn't show up and didn't answer calls. The next day, they finally contacted me claiming they had a "storage theft" and lost all their tools and materials. Financial Instability: I was incredibly patient. I waited while they managed to install one unit, but the second one kept getting delayed. Shockingly, they eventually admitted they didn't have the money to buy the necessary tools to finish the job. Forced "Loan": To get the project finished, I had to pay an additional $6,000 upfront so they could buy tools, with a signed promissory note that they would repay me $500/month. Ask yourself: What kind of professional HVAC company needs the customer to finance their tools? Incompetence & Ghosting: The second furnace was finally installed on Dec 12, 2025. Two weeks later, the heat pump malfunctioned. Jan 2: Scheduled a repair visit. No-show. Jan 3: Showed up but couldn't fix the issue. Now: They promised a quick resolution but have completely ghosted me. They are ignoring all calls and texts. I am now left with a broken system in the middle of winter, a company that owes me money, and zero communication. Do not trust this company with your home or your money.

We haven't had an issue with the unit since install 1.5 years ago. The bad: The workers put their food on our clothes that were on top of the dryer, staining a pair of jeans with grease. They stained the carpet with the old furnace removal, however paid to have the carpets cleaned and the stains came out - it was inconvenient and another day spent waiting on someone to fix their goof. I had to convince the workers to put the outdoor fan unit on the far side of the house vs where they wanted to put it which was on the other side of our deck's privacy wall. Thank goodness I was adamant here because it would have been SO noisy when it kicks on and we are relaxing on the deck during the summer months. The lines they ran along our house are insulated, but the insulation failed shortly after being installed so now there's tear spots in the black line insulation and looks bad. The lines were also ran poorly. Instead of running them lower along the foundation, they came up around the back door and curved the line to run higher. It's an eye sore plain and simple. We had the install during November so we spent no time outside. Later that spring we noticed how crappy it looked when we were outside more and asked if they could re-run the lines, figuring it would take hardly anything since everything was already in place. I inquired 3+ times about this, even emailing pictures but I was ghosted with no response. You'd think paying $13,500 for a new unit you would get better customer service.... Lastly, they called for a yearly inspection and asked if I'd like to schedule one. I agreed! At the end when I made sure it didn't cost anything, that's when they informed me it would be $200-300 (I can't recall the exact price). I would've been hosed had I not asked. I was shocked at least a few weren't included in this huge purchase. If I could go back I would choose a different company, but that's why hindsight is 20/20. You live and you learn.

Yet I managed to find it in just a few minutes of searching. - I was told twice that if the scope of the project changed I would receive a call regarding a change in the estimate. That never happened, I called you. - When presented with an estimate that was nearly the same as the original estimate after significantly reducing the scope and labor, I was more or less attacked over the phone - including being blamed for the situation - when I was looking for a reasonable explanation and some accountability. I know you're a business and have costs and I understand sharing those expenses with you. My frustration is not about the money, it's about how the situation was handled. It is about the apparent lack of due diligence on the part of your team. The disappointment of looking to experts to help solve a problem and finding out that they didn't put in the effort to address the issue in what would have been a simple fix. And most importantly, the rudeness we received when looking for accountability. Describing the situation as unprofessional only scratches the surface.
