Classic Hamburger Combo

The historic A&W is the the Napa Valley longest only fast food chain that continues to operate in this popular tourist destination. Compared to most fast food chains, they're better and the staff provides great service.

Combination and food menu at A&W Root Beer in Saint Helena.
Jason F.

Whenever I pass by the A&W Root Beer on St. Helena I always remind myself to stop off on my way home for their patented A&W Root Beer Floats because I know that could always be a great way to sober up from a day of wine tasting throughout the valley. For the first time in years, I finally got a chance to do it following an event I went to in St. Helena. A friend and I were looking for an inexpensive place to eat and since we weren't that famished I suggested what else A&W Root Beer? I mean where else can you literally get a refreshing root beer float for only $4.59? No where in Napa Valley that's for sure! When we arrived, the place was virtually empty which was not a surprise since whenever I drive by no one seems to be in the parking lot. Ordering was a snap as it tends to be in places like this especially when they don't have any customers. I knew I wasn't down for one of their "papa" hamburgers or their chicken burgers, but their fish burger was something I could get behind of, I ordered that with a side of onion rings because onion rings are always prepared better than French Fries when given an option. Of course, to down my meal I had to order a large sized Root Beer Float. It's a shame there is no combination meal that features any one of the three items I ordered, if there was I would have been on it! After all, the fish burger with cheese cost $5.49, the onion rings cost $3.59 and the root beer float $4.59 and for fast food that bill sure adds up. My meal was small but sufficed, the fish burger was slightly above average, better in size than McDonald's but not as tasty as say Carls Jr. Same for the onion rings, fresh from the fryer and hot to the touch, you can't complain about uniformity. Of course, I loved my root beer float, when you drink it there, they give it to you in a beautiful chilled beer glass, and what I didn't know until too long of a time later is that they have a root beer spigot, by the soda fountain area, where you can continuously add to your float. I do wish they used real ice cream instead of what is basically soft serve ice cream because, trust me, there is a difference. And since they're giving away the root beer, feel free to ask if you can have some sort of to-go cup to keep the good times rolling on your way home. Who knows maybe your server is a generous person and will give you one! Another tip is just order a root beer float to go and drink up as much as you can there and fill it for the road! We love this A&W not only for it's central location that even has an atrium dining area, but with an unlocked restroom on the side for anyone to use without being a customer, it makes for the ultimate road stop (clean or not). And then there's a curio of A&W branded swag for you to add to your road stop collection of collectibles. Who knew they had mugs and figurines that you never knew you wanted but always had to buy! Thank you A&W Root Beer for being you in the heart of Napa Valley, please never change!

Normally I don't eat at fast food restaurants but time was of the essence because of our flight back to Texas. It wasn't terrible or delicious - the root beer did provide happiness!

I asked "Where can I get a good burger" at multiple wineries and everyone pointed me here. Now I know why! As we walked in, (we were lucky as we did not have reservations for lunch but came early) the atmosphere, venue, electricity in the air was amazing. They also have a lovely outside seating area, which seems to the hot spot. It was exactly how all the people described it and the overall atmosphere was amazing with that giant open flaming cooking area at the end and in the middle. I had the perfect seat to watch it and the amazing Chef Marshall preparing food. A lovely young lady ( am am embarrassed that I did not write down names) came by and got us started with menus, silverware and a drink order. Then our amazing waiter (same thing on the name) came over to explain more. Both my wife and I already knew that we were having the burger. (Pretty rare and special for her to have a burger.) Not much to say other than they were AMAZING! Two patties (rather large) on a bun with special sauce and cheese. These weren't just good, they were really, really good. Cooked perfectly (medium) and served with the most amazing hand cut fries. This place definately set a new bar... and it's really high! Through the whole meal, I got to watch Chef Marshall at the grill. Lunch and a show, how perfect was this day? My wife and I are looking forward to coming back soon, and we will... this time for dinner [and we will have reservation.] KUDOs to the team at The Charter Oak Restaurant

I've been coming to Farmstead over the years and it was one of my favorite recommendations for those visiting St. Helena. I've sent friends, family and out-of-town visitors here, often raving about how good it was. So when I took my immediate family to Farmstead a few weeks ago, I made a reservation, drove over 40+ minutes from the southern part of Napa Valley and genuinely looked forward to returning. Making reservation online was easy, parking is available (although it can feel like a competitive sport once everyone decides to arrive at the same time), the covered outdoor seating remains lovely, the barn transformed to a dining room with its high ceilings is still a beautiful space and the bathrooms were clean. Unfortunately, the food was simply didn't live up to what I remembered. We started with the cheddar biscuits with honey butter. I expected warm, tender biscuits. Instead each of the biscuits were surprisingly, almost as if they've been left in the oven a few minutes too long. The honey butter tried its best to salvage the situation, but was unsuccessful. We also ordered the fried eggplant which skipped right past golden brown and headed directly into "left in the fryer during a staff meeting" territory. For entrees, two of us ordered the steak frites. The cut of the day was a flank steak and we both ordered medium rare. Mine arrive firmly in the medium-well territory. It's disappointing when your steak lands two doneness levels above what you requested. A friend ordered the grass-fed cheeseburger medium. It also came out well beyond that point, dry and crumbly rather than juicy. He was expecting a burger. What showed up as something closer to a semi-palatable hockey puck. The wood-grilled heritage pork chop was probably the strongest dish at the table. At $52, however, we were expecting something memorable. It was fine. Perfectly acceptable. But "perfectly acceptable" isn't exactly the reaction you're hoping for at that price point. Dessert was a small bowl of stracciatella gelato. That's it. No wafer, no cookie, waffle cone shard, no sprig of mint or garnishment to make it feel finished. I can see wanting to accommodate dietary restriction like those who are gluten-free, but it would have been nice to have an optional accompaniment. We kept the drinks simple. Service was fine. Total bill came out to be about $330 for lunch with tip. What stood out wasn't the cost, but the lack of excitement or something being memorable. You're dining at a popular restaurant in Napa Valley, you're going to be paying a premium. At our table, nobody was particularly excited about the meal they had or interested in taking home any leftovers. Maybe it was an off day. Maybe nostalgia elevated my memories beyond reality. Whatever the reason, this experience felt very different from the Farmstead I've enthusiastically recommended over the years. The restaurant was very busy with a steady stream of people coming through the entire time while we were there, so clearly plenty of diners continue to enjoy it. But based on this visit, I don't see myself recommending it the way I once did. I'm just one customer. Still, this was a disappointing return to what had long been one of my favorites in St. Helena.
