I have always loved A&W, but this location soured me on them because of the behavior of the staff. My brother and I went to A&W to have dinner and we got there at around 8:25 and the place closes at nine. The moment we walked through the door, the woman at the register gave the most distressed frown and rolled her eyes as though we were walking in at 8:57. She was not polite, nor was the rest of the staff. We got our food and we were finished by 8:50, but before we could stand up and throw our things away, another person working there came up to us and told us that they closed at nine and that we needed to leave. The food was fine, the place is OK, but the service wants to get out early and for that reason, I shall not trouble this restaurant with my business at any time of the day. read more

A & W Root Beer Float Zero Sugar Soda: A & W's roots (no pun intended) go back to its founding in 1919 and the brand would go on to create numerous flavors and even inspire a restaurant chain. Nowadays A & W falls under the Dr. Pepper manufacturing umbrella. Traditionally root bark from the sassafras tree was used for flavoring, which is how the beverage acquired its name (it was almost named root tea, but that's another story). Root beer happens to be my favorite soda flavor and A & W is by far the best (IMO) as I love the perfect amount of vanilla flavor that they throw in. New for the summer of 2026 is the "Root Beer Float" version, which is available in both regular and zero sugar varieties. I abstain from full sugar sodas these days, but I was all for trying the zero-sugar version. Since the zero-sugar A & W Root Beer is already perfection in my mind, I was a bit apprehensive that they might screw this up. While it's not the gold standard of root beers, the new "float" is still delicious. The best way I can think of describing it is as a hybrid of cream soda and root beer with the cream aspect having the upper hand and the root beer flavor being more subtle. Like classic A & W, it still has a creamy mouth feel. One would think this would also work well in an actual root beer float. Vanilla ice cream is too mundane for me to keep it stocked in my freezer, so you will have to experiment with that one on your own. We have never been to A&W before, so we swung through the drive thru while in Lexington for Scarefest. I ordered the Spicy Papa Burger and the hubby ordered two chili dogs. We also ordered some chicken tenders and some french fries. We lucked out with nobody in line so we were able to place our order immediately. The gentleman at the drive thru was very nice and helpful and we were able to pay quickly. It took a few minutes for the food to come out, but it was so fresh and hot that we didn't mind. We headed back to our hotel room to eat and the food was very tasty for a fast food restaurant! The burger and chili dogs were flavorful with all fresh ingredients and the fries were crispy and needed no ketchup. But the winner of the meal were those chicken tenders. WOW. I remember my dad taking my brother and me to A&W as a kid. Then a few years ago I stopped into an A&W for the first time in decades and was so very disappointed with the food. That changed today. I stopped into an A&W after hearing they changed their food up a while back, and boy am I glad I stopped in! I had a cheeseburger and fries and a frosty mug of root beer. I was surprised to see the voice of tipping for burgers which includes slaw and jalapeños which I love on a burger. The fries are shoestring thin fries and were really good. I love the thick frosty glass mugs your handed for drinks, just like the good ole days! The other thing I noticed was how friendly the staff were. They communicated well and made me feel welcome, which is something you don't generally experience at fast food restaurants! Thank you A&W for making your stores what I remember from my youth. It's always a good idea to try a place twice, just to make sure it's not a fluke that it was good (or bad). A&W impressed me again. The good? Excellent service. Cooked to order every time. Tasty chicken fingers. Even the shoestring fries are good, and I usually like my fries thicker. The background classic rock is good and not played at an intrusive volume. Frozen mugs are always fun. The bad? Okay, so the a la carte style is a bit pricey. 5 grilled chicken fingers are $7.99. No drink or side with that. 3 piece breaded tenders are $4.99. Fries $1.99. $1.99 for the frozen mug of Pepsi. So with only one drink, the total for my wife and I was $17.98. That's high for only getting one order of fries and drink. Still, I'd come back, even at these prices. I only note the cost as a warning for anyone watching their budget. On this visit, I again chose the Thai sweet chili sauce and my wife chose the buffalo. We also both enjoy the jalapeno ketchup that's on every table. They also have a Sriracha bottle available. After we started eating, she went back up and asked for samples of the spicy papa sauce (thousand island based) and some mayo. (Mayo as a dipping sauce? I asked. Yes, she replied. And well, on chicken fingers it makes sense in the same way that mayo on a chicken sandwich makes sense.) The shift manager came around later and asked her how she liked the spicy papa sauce, and asked whether I wanted a to-go cup for my Pepsi. Really friendly service. As I was headed to the movies on a Saturday evening, I realized that I hadn't eaten dinner. With it being so close to the starting time of the movie, it was either fast food or nothing. As a rarity, I chose fast food. As I walked in, and pondered at the simple menu, the staff was friendly and easily made small talk. The choices on the menu are basically burgers, chicken tenders, hot dogs and a few side items. As another rarity, I decided to go with a cheese burger and I was glad that I did. The patty was thin but the toppings were plentiful and I loved that! So, if you prefer a thick helping of meat, go for the double. But I recommend sticking with the single and piling up the toppings. What other fast food place can you add jalapeños, grilled mushrooms, and more... at no additional cost?! I have to admit, I did not scope out the part of the menu that listed the toppings, so when he asked what toppings I wanted, I ordered it just like I would at home... if I ever fixed burgers at home. The pickles aren't your average flat sided round pickles, these were the light colored, and oblong, the kind that you write home about. The fresh fries were excellent too. They're thin, the kind that they call shoestring fries. Mine came out piping hot, so I ate my burger first and finished off with the strings of salty goodness. I didn't get to try a float or cone, but I noticed that the cones were good sized and only $.99! My only complaints were that both ketchup bottles at our table were empty. And because Diet Coke is my drink of choice, I assume that A&W is a Pepsi product because the fountain consisted of Pepsi, Mountain Dew and the like. The Papa is basically a 1/3 pound two-patty burger with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle and Papa sauce (kind of a spicy Thousand Islands dressing). Loved both the burger and fries which were served with regular or spicy ketchup. The root beer served in the restaurant is a different formula from that sold in stores and is a unique blend of herbs, bark, spices, and berries. It's especially refreshing when served from their frosted glass mugs. For dessert we had a Mango (Flavor of the Day) and Vanilla swirl cone which was a delight! I highly recommend this restaurant. For Lexington Burger Week the offering is a burger topped with sweet & smoky BBQ sauce, grilled pineapple salsa, hickory-smoked bacon, lettuce, provolone cheese & a crispy fried onion ring on a caramelized bun. Once at the window, rude girl gave us our drinks...we waited 10 minutes (order at 1:10, she opened window at 1:20) just for her to open window to give us a number to wait longer. We asked what was going on (no cars in front of us the whole time we were there), the girl gave such an attitude and said "we are very busy, you don't have to be rude". We asked for the manager and money back. With all this said, I looked and only one customer at the counter inside and she had just walked in. And only handful of people inside eating. Also there was a car waiting in drive-thru parking spot which had been there the whole time and finally she got out with her ticket to go in. Very rude staff. I love that A&W is making a comeback. At least it is in this location. First, I love the retro look of the drive-thru menu board. It makes me smile when I see it. Now, I've only done the drive-thru so I can't vouch for the dine-in service but the drive-thru service is excellent. They give you a number and have you pull forward to some designated spaces to wait for your freshly made burger. The wait isn't long at all, maybe 5 minutes? But it's nice that the drive-thru line isn't being held up. I always get my burger Papa-style w/o onions but I think next time, I'll try a modified Papa style. They have a spicy Papa sauce. I want to try that. I think I'll try it with lettuce/tomato/grilled onions/grilled 'shrooms/spicy Papa sauce. Mmmm, looking forward to that for sure! Oh, and their root beer floats are super good. My husband tried an orange float and he said it was really good. Very creamsicle-y. They have something called a root beer freeze, which I can only assume is like a root beer slurpee.
