I was charged $55 for the locksmith to disassemble the locking mechanism and extract the lock cylinder. He did not have the necessary hardware to duplicate key so he took the cylinder along with the promise to return with either a new key or complete new cylinder. A few days go by and I get a text stating that he has to order a new cylinder. I asked him how much a new cylinder costs, $80 + $90 labor. This seemed a little high and prompted me to research what Locinox charges for a 46mm replacement cylinder. $6 plus instructions on how to swap out cylinder. Not only that but a brand new, identical lock kit costs $120. NOT TODAY SATAN! NOT TODAY I understand I'm paying for a service but this is price gouging at its finest. I'd hate to see anyone get duped so please heed my cautioning and try a different locksmith.

I was happy about that because my front door was not secure and I was about to go out of town for an extended period of time. The lockset on my narrow stile door is not a garden variety lock and has many variations and nuances. The locksmith was puzzled from the get-go and when I offered some advice, he welcomed my input. I am technically capable and had worked on the lockset before. Regrettably, he did not follow my guidance on how to complete one of the tasks in the reassembly process and as a consequence, one tiny screw could not be installed. The holes were slightly misaligned. So he just left it out. The lock worked and was safe, but the cover plate would bind on the jam. To his credit, he told me about it and gave me the screw. After he left, I disassembled the lock to the point of being able to make the adjustments necessary so that the screw could be installed and then reassembled everything. The main plus was that he came out right away and brought the replacement lock components that I could not obtain locally and got my lock functional within hours. Had I been able to buy the part myself I would have done the work myself. I'm pleased with everything, even considering that I had to redo some of it. I think it is unreasonable to expect any particular locksmith to know the nuances of every possible lock, especially unusual / exotic ones, so I'm OK with it and will call Howard again if I find myself in a bind.

Phil gave clear pricing to me on the charges and asked important questions about the hardware they selected -- informing me that some brands don't work with others. This was good information to pass along to my parents in case they needed to make any exchanges at the hardware store prior to his visit. I easily scheduled a next day, Saturday, appointment for them. It was easy to text Phil their address and contact information. On Saturday, Phil texted me and informed me that he was running a little ahead of schedule and could come about an hour or so early. My parents mentioned that he was respectful, courteous and a professional. I was told he wore his ID and explained all the work that he did. I had a weird problem at work a while back. My boss's boss called me (he's usually a cool guy)…read more My direct boss above me boss is a sorry piece of crap. F that guy. Everyone else in the company is good. Boss's boss yells at me on the phone about needing access to an electronics control cabinet. "Make me 10 copies of that key!" I was tempted to tell him that it's real easy to pick that lock. I keep my mouth shut as to not look like a criminal. It's a thin, short key. Ace Hardware can't do it. "Too small. Tricky." Home Depot can't do it. An older, wiser employee explains to me that the modern machines cannot accurately cut such a key. I go back to my truck super stressed. The clock is ticking. I Google locksmith businesses in the area. The first several don't have a brick and mortar store. They all drive around town in trucks. I find Robbie's Lock & Key (an actual storefront) just 4 miles away. A really nice, intelligent guy answered the phone. I make a B-line to their shop. A solid, professional gentleman greets me at the counter. I show him the key. He says it will be tricky, but he will try. Old school machines (maybe 50 years old). Hell yeah! My kind of shop!!!! He cuts and grinds a new copy, smiles, "yeah, this will work. How many you need?" "Sir, I need 10. My boss wants 10 copies. Make that 20. 20 keys please sir." All 20 key copies were perfect. I got back to the office (everyone was gone). I piled the new 20 keys on el jefe's desk like the dragon Smaug in The Hobbit looking at his vast gold treasure. On a post-it note I wrote, "Here you go a$$hole. Shut the fvck up b----". I thought better of it and grabbed the note and put it in my pocket.
