I stopped into A and J for a cupcake for the RI Food Fights Triple Play. I had never been before and I did not realize that this was a gluten and nut-free bakery. I have to admit, I was kind of scared to eat my cupcake because I remember the times when gluten-free food was super gross. To my surprise, you really couldn't tell the difference! It was great! I loved the frosting. They seem to have a decent selection of other desserts. I noticed a lot of cheesecake options! I'm not a parent, but I would imagine this would be a great place to stop if you wanted to bring something in for your child's school or grab something allergy friendly for a party! They have a great selection of cakes, pies and desserts. I opted for the strawberry crunch pie from the freezer section. It wasn't my favorite but did the job and no one complained. I hear the cheesecakes are very good here and look forward to buying one soon. The staff are very helpful and kind. It's very convenient when your in a crunch and need either gluten free or nut free dessert. They do a great job with labeling any allergens (like dairy/eggs etc). I highly recommend! read more

I had no idea that this bakery was so close to us. Our daughter-in-law cannot eat gluten and we always struggle to find some thing that's tasty as well as gluten-free. Mike went into shop here so that we could get rolls for a cookout and was delighted to see that they had hamburger rolls as well as Italian crusty rolls. The pastries look delicious. Mike bought some cannolis to serve and we are absolutely thrilled to be able to accommodate Kate and make some thing as good as what everyone else is eating. um i could cry because gluten free cinnamon roll??? the icing and gingerbread cookies were also delightful. that icing kept for a long time too. i enjoyed the spinach turnover as well, soooo flavorful. the custard dessert i got was good for the custard part but the piece i got had a little too much salt i think. or maybe i let it sit in my fridge for a day too long idk. i have not yet tried the pasta in the frozen section but i will update when i make it. appreciate the stuffing mix and bread crumbs. what a gem for Rhody. read more

Went here for the first time today after seeing them post about a vegan Boston cream cake! We were met with the aroma of freshly baked sweets upon entering the bakery (one of the most amazing smells ever!) the bakery was bigger than I expected and had a freezer full of vegan goods. There were also plenty of other treats that are non-vegan both in the freezer and in cases that were out. The bakery itself prides itself on being allergen friendly as they carry many products that are gluten, nut, and dairy free. I wasn't sure how our cake would taste as I wasn't a fan of gluten free treats that I've had in the past at other places, but it looked awesome so I was dying to get home and try it. Unfortunately, I had to wait a bit longer to eat it. Since it was frozen, it took a few hours for the custard to completely thaw out, but boy was it worth the wait! Both my husband and I were pleasantly surprised at how tasty the cake was. The chocolate and the custard was yummy! We ended up eating way more than we should have. The cake itself is pretty large and is reasonably priced. I look forward to coming back to try other things. I definitely recommend this bakery! read more

The assortment of products here amazes me. I am not gluten free and never really knew the extent of it but I was surprised by the amount of options you had to choose from. There were pastries, cheesecakes, frozen desserts, frozen savory foods, pastas, ice cream cones you name it. I even had vegan ice cream for the first time at their sampling event this past Saturday and I was thouroughly impressed. I ended up buying the Brazilian cheese rolls because they were amazing! Awesome hidden gem!! Now my favorite bakery! Was immediately greeted as I walked through the door. Clerk was friendly and informative. As I looked around everything was well organized, nice & neat as well as well-labelled. Everything was gluten-free and vegan --such a great variety, from pantry staples such as pastas, to specialty items like gluten-free crust pizzas with dairy-free cheese & vegan. Lunch specials can be had, spinach pie & chicken soup, great lunch! The bakery --tried the apple pocket, yum! Tried a cutout cookie but icing stuck to plastic wrap so only tasted the cookie but it was good. The slice of cheesecake was a winner! Have a new favorite shop! read more

I'm a vegan with a gluten sensitivity and this place was like heaven to me I can't wait to come back and scarf down more sugar cookies Not only is this place huge they also have a good selection of vegan/gf pasta from a particular Italian brand which you never see anywhere! I have to order online normally for it! So picked up three packages of the finest gluten free bow tie pastas which were very decently priced, 2 vegan pizza shells, a vegan dinosaur frosting cookie, vegan cosmic brownie, vegan lemon pocket and small apple pie.. all for under 40 dollars. I told the cashier that it was surprisingly cheap/ We are used to going to vegan only bakeries- which things like the pie would cost at least 10 dollars so this was a nice surprise! I cannot wait to come back and try more things! The only sad thing is that they aren't open Sunday's In my opinion- there is no reason to go anywhere else if you're a vegan with a gluten allergy. This place blows every place in RI out of the water. Not only does it taste amazing but the fact that there are new items and different than you're run of the mil boring "one cupcake, one cookie" type place. Go here! read more

A true hidden gem! This place is incredible! It can be tricky to find a safe and quality place to feed family and friends with severe allergies and dietary needs. A and J is not only a reliable choice, it is a delicious one! The food is terrific and the variety is almost overwhelming to folks whose dietary needs usually leave them with little to no choice. I purchased a Groupon recently as a friend was recently given the news of NO MORE GLUTEN; it turns out A & J has gluten-free and nut-free products for anyone needing to reduce nuts in their life (if only that worked at family holidays! Ha ha...). I was hesitant to try it myself as I am a white flour/white sugar girl myself, but one of the things I bought was the "Party Brownie" which is a GINORMOUS brownie - seriously, about 3-4" high - with marshmallows on top. Vegan and gluten free heaven! Not everything is vegan but happily they have PLENTY of options. Some things are frozen and can be thawed whereas others were in their display case. They also have vegan ice cream, which I didn't try this time around. The frosting in their cookies is light and soft, not hard like vegan frosting can be. The sugar cookie, funfetti brownie, whoopie pies, and chocolate glazed donut holes were all amazing. My wife got a traditional cannoli and said it was delicious. We'll definitely be back. read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE. I haven't personally had an issue with the ladies up front who serve me, they have always been pleasant and chatty, as well as remembering me, even though I'm only there every other week or so. 8$ minimum for credit cards, which is manageable. Their biscotti are delicious (try the Birthday Cake) and the bread is OK. I personally like Udi's more, but A&J's isn't bad, and handles freezing really well. They also have GF chicken soup (!!!) and other comfort foods. Their anise pizzelle are light and delicious. I have not tried something from A&J's that I have not liked so far. It is definately worth the drive to Park Avenue to get their products! They also sell their products out of some Dave's Marketplaces, and you can always order online. read more

My sister usually brings gluten-free pies to Thanksgiving dinner, but she had to work this year so I took a gamble and ordered two pies (chocolate cream and apple crumb) from A&J, along with stuffing mix. The GF pies and cakes my sister has bought from bakeries in Western Massachusetts, where she lives, have been uniformly amazing. A&J's pies were...not amazing. In fact, they were pretty bad. The filling in the chocolate cream pie tasted like it came from commercial milk chocolate pudding mix, there was too much whipped topping, and trying to slice the damn thing was nearly impossible because the cutting through the bottom crust was like cutting through cardboard. The apple crumb was even worse. The crumb topping was too sweet and had an off-putting aftertaste. The apples were still hard. And slicing,again, was an issue. Add to these issues the burnt stuffing cubes, and the entire order was a disappointment. I doubt I will be a repeat customer. read more

I have had a LOT of gluten free baked goods over the last 20 years and have perfected a lot of my own gluten free baking but I heard about this place and felt like having something sweet without having to bake it all myself and decided to try it. I purchasec a slice of the chocolate mousse cake and what a disappointment. I had to literally choke it down it was so dry and the frosting which I take was a ganache was hard and the chocolate was bitter. Not at all soft and moist the way a chocolate cake should be. On a good note I also purchased the lemon square which I found to be delicious! So it's a mixed bag. read more

I stopped by this bakery to grab a treat with a friend with a nut allergy. I was surprised to find out how delicious the brownies and cookies are. Given that they are for the most part, allergy-free. Mind you, this is coming from someone who is a die-hard nut lover! The owner told us that they created this business due to their child who has a nut allergy and were seeking a place that catered those needs. When they couldn't find it, they decided to make one themselves. The couple (owners) are extremely friendly and approachable. They seem to love what they do and care about the population they serve. It's clean, the service is good and the pastries are as good as they can be considering the lack of ingredients that make food taste good. Wow, and here I had been all excited about a gluten-free bakery in RI, but what a disappointment. There was a very limited selection of goodies available. Some items were marked gluten free, but others weren't, and when I questioned the help on that, I never got a straight answer, just a snippy, "Well, we specialize in allergen free." Okay, define allergen, and why are half the products clearly labelled gluten free, but the other half aren't and you won't tell me straight out whether or not they are for sure gluten free? And then the price. Holy crap, talk about taking advantage of folks! Absolutely outrages. I had a Groupon but still feel like I got ripped off. But the worse was when I got home with my teeny-tiny "cupcakes" (more like shot-cakes...) and took a taste. Stale. disgustingly so. Texture was horrible, and there was no flavor. Eating cardboard would have been more satisfying. I'll be sticking to doing my own baking, or purchasing items from Whole Foods which has an amazing selection of gluten free baked goods that actually taste wonderful, and hey, the folks who work there can actually answer my questions! read more

I just developed a gluten intolerance in August 2013 and as an avid baker I really suffered for the first few months. I see a lot of mediocre reviews about A&J's gluten free options but I've been to every GF bakery in the state and I think this one is by far the best. The brownies, biscottis, cupcakes and pizza are all really great. Every time we celebrate any holiday that involves treats I always opt to go here. The baked goods don't taste stale or gritty the way GF baked items tend to taste but are moist and consistent. read more
