We always go to the Wallingford spot- it's pretty convenient, especially when I need to go to the grocery store [S & S is right behind it] and feel like I should probably eat before I go there or face the consequences of walking out of there with a cart full of junk food. Consistently good service- we've been going here for at least 5 years and I can honestly not recall ever having a bad server. The food is exactly what you would expect from an affordable sit down restaurant- not amazing but not bad; it does the job. They do have some pretty good salads and other options when you're watching your calories- all the calories are listed. And if you're on a budget they have a solid selection of meals under $10. This past week went on a Thursday night for what I consider a late dinner and for some reason it was packed and there was a wait- only like 5/10 min. We both chose items off the new holiday menu- I got the Roasted Maple Pork Tenderloin & hubby got the New England Style Baked Scallops. Side note: for whatever reason, it makes me really happy that when you order water with lemon they skewer it with a little plastic arrow and balance it on top so you can easily pluck it out and squeeze it into your water. And of course the free popcorn- it was crazy salty, but that didn't stop me from eating all of it. So the pork was actually pretty good- I liked the cider au jus and it was even better when dipped in the apple maple chutney. The scallops looked like they were cooked in water or just goer natural juices so he requested a side of butter and was able to add that for some more flavor. Even with that he did say they were a little bitter. As usual the server was great- super friendly and checked in on us frequently even though it was busy. All in all a decent spot that has always been consistent. And full disclosure- We still walked out of the grocery store with a cart full of snacks. Fail. read more

Despite COVID-19 happening throughout the world and the USA, this restaurant is open. I love The 99 Restaurant for many reasons - including the fact that they have delicious food and that their staff are so kind, welcoming, respectful, and friendly. They ensure that my order is made correctly (I have GERD) and they always come by to ask how the food is. My significant other also like the 99 Restaurant. Another great thing about this place is that the prices are reasonable. You do not have to worry about paying an arm and a leg. The portions are great, you get what you paid for. ordered in person for carryout, the clerk asked what vehicle and I pointed to it. He put the correct vehicle on the receipt. He told me to wait in vehicle, they would bring it out. They never brought it out, when I gave up and went in it had been sitting who knows how long. It's a chain. Let's get that out of the way. It can serve my food with the waitstaff doing handstands and cartwheels while carrying my food but it's still a chain. So no five star status for them. HOWEVER. For a chain? I've never had a bad meal here. It's good on nights when I don't want to cook but don't want to do take out. I recommend eating in the bar, that way you avoid the families with kids. (as an aside, is parenting no longer in vogue? Is it acceptable to let your kids jump up and down, yell, scream and whine in a public place? Let me know.) The food is pretty straightforward. The french onion soup is recommended as is any of the burgers and sandwiches on the menu. Decent beer selection. One thing I will say: From Maine to Rhode Island to Connecticut, the food is consistent as is the atmosphere and service. If your choice is Ruby Tuesday's or the 99, go for the 99. read more

I have mixed emotions about this place. I have had both good and bad experiences in this place. I guess that makes this place real, like any kitchen it has good days and bad. The only rememberable bad experience I had was with the grilled turkey tips. The staff was real responsive to my concerns (if you had them, you know), so service wise I have no complaints. My personal favorite is the steak tips. When you are uber hungry, a nice plate of those with some mashed potatoes, and sweet corn hit the spot. I tried the baby back ribs, kind of lame, even for chain ribs. Just slab babybacks with sauces as an afterthrought. Decently done, not bad in a pinch. I've had similar experiences with their salads. This place is steak house, pub style place. I recommend the Fried Chicken, or anything steak. The seafood, when available pretty good as well. A real, kinda comfy, place. A feeling you don't get at a lot of chain places. Decent for a quick night out. read more

Had a gal named "Pat" who waited on us last night. She was quick and knowledgeable about their specials and explained the good deal on the Merlot. I had the buttery lobster tail that was LOADED with lobster. We have eaten there many times but Pat made it special. When we're in need of a sit-down meal, no surprises, and no messing around, we prefer the 99 to the more well-known chain restaurants such as Chilis. It's a good default when we're just tired and hungry, and they serve late enough in the evening to accommodate our needs. It has all of the same amenities, such as soft drinks with unlimited refills (which they bring without asking); but they always bring out a bowl of freshly-popped popcorn while you're waiting for food to arrive. I think wine represents a huge profit center for them, as even house wines are about $6 a glass and the glass is small. But they're better with beer, and usually have a good selection of drafts (the usual suspects here in New England, like Sam Adams in several varieties). The main reason we prefer it to the big-name chains is that the food in general does not taste like it has been excessively processed and thrown into a freezer bag. Steaks are good; so is chicken. "Boneless Buffalo wings" (tenderloin strips) are freshly sauced the way nature intended. They char-grill most meats and seafood. This is one of their older locations, but they renovated it last year--removing most of the local memorabilia and replacing it with marketing messages ("99 reasons" to eat there). [Guys: SPOILER ALERT] This includes a sign over the urinals in the men's room extolling the virtues of the "magic" towel dispenser: "Look, Dad! No hands!" Honestly didn't know this was a chain when it came up in yelp as a bar that was close by, however after pulling into the parking lot, i had a bad feeling. walking inside confirmed it, ninty nine is no different than applebees, chilis, name your brass and wood restaunrant/bar. very dry atmosphere. Bar is in the center, really in its own separate room. The other rooms include lower eating tables. Servers, in black or course, are everywhere. Food could not be any different from Applebee's. Bar room itself isn't horrible is it was a free standing building. Walls are brick with windows & entry ways on three sides. Except for the formica bar top (really looks horrible), otherwise good steel rail, comfy chairs, tiled ceiling (over the bar), 4 hdtvs (though not the place to watch the game). Decorated for Christmas which was nice. Older crowd in the bar and families in the restaurant. Mike the bartender was a good guy, on top of things. Free popcorn. Other problem is the bar is next to kitchen, which really sucks. Creates too much noise and activity. Basically it's an Applebee's, enough said. read more

The food was terrible. My wife took one bite of the steak tips and was sick. The manager seem annoyed that he had to take it off our bill. My daughter and I both had hairs in our food. All of us were in the bathroom within an hour of leaving the place. Oh, and the bathrooms, both men's and women's were nasty. The trash was overflowing. Today was my first time at any 99 restaurant and it was a very good experience overall. Our waitress, Ashley, was super attentive to our needs. There was a bit of a wait for our drinks and she made sure we had popcorn in in the meantime. Entrees came quickly, I ordered the three course add-on and was planning to share the petite treat with two others; however, she gave us an extra one since she knew we would be sharing. It's not that I don't like kids, it's just that their energy feeds off each other until the dining experience for the rest of us is less than we desire. So it was with a great deal of reluctance that I accompanied my Son and Daughter in Law to the 99 in Rutland, VT. This time we sat in the bar and had a great time. My husband and I went a couple of weeks ago. There was a big crowd waiting in the lobby. We checked in, no room and the bar and when we went out to the waiting room to wait for our 30 minute reservations there were 6 of us that were more than 6 feet apart. One of the three couples waiting in the lobby was called for their reservation, then the jerk of a manager came out while there were 2 couples waiting. He said we had to wait in our cars because of the covid rules. Where was he when there was 20 people waiting there. We won't go there again. The food is not that great anyway and with a manager like that on a weekend why would anyone want to waste their money and dining experience there. read more

Great family restaurant. Good value for the money. The staff and the managers are truly wonderful. Bravo to all of them. I come here with my mom and dad (who are seniors)every Sunday and they come during the week days since mom doesn't cook much any more. They treat me and my parents very well. Sometimes will go there later at night with my friends for happy hour. Three dollar beers and four dollar mixed drinks. Good deal. Wish wallingford had more options for dining...that said, this is a good option for a moderately priced meal for sure. read more

The menu and drink options are pretty expansive, including fresh seafood. Chase was out waiter and he was quick as well as helpful, totally on the ball. The 99 Restaurant was a pleasant surprise for me. I generally skip chain restaurants for being bland, boring, and offering institutional (read cafeteria) type foods. But I must say my lunch here was very good. As good, or better than some of the mom & pop diners in the area. I met up with an old buddy for lunch, and this was his choice of places to have lunch. I started with a bowl of seafood chowder that was creamy, and had plenty of small pieces of fish, clams, and potatoes. Not bad at all! We both ordered the fish & chips. I was a little apprehensive, because I've ordered that in other diners that don't specialize in seafood, and have gotten one of those thickly battered, long time frozen "fillets", that is more batter than fish. NOT the case here. I was again pleasantly surprised by the nice portion size of deep fried, breaded, not battered, fillet. It was more than acceptable. After all of this, I still had room for a summery dessert, so I asked for their strawberry shortcake. It came in a deep glass dish, with plenty of sliced strawberries on a biscuit, with a nice, unexpected scoop of vanilla ice cream, and topped with whipped cream. It too, was very good, and a pleasant surprise. I still prefer the mom & pop joints, but I have to admit that I'll come back here to meet up with one of the old geezers I know again, and I certainly won't be dreading it! read more

Wish there were places like this in Fairfield county, always love going to 99. This place has a great waitstaff and a nice, newer interior decor. The restaurant always feels clean and the food has been spot on. Can't get enough of the Chicken Kabob Salad, so good. The popcorn to start is an added bonus and we ask for more all the time without a problem. This location is typically busy so be prepared to wait time to time. Oh boy did I have a horrible time at the 99 restaurant resturant I ordered the all star burger my mom ordered a strawberry chicken salad Call my brother boneless wings my burger was not only hard and chewy it was not seasoned and had no flavor at all we could tell by the texture of the meat that my burger was definitely frozen my mom salad was extremely lackluster as well strawberry summer summer was ridiculously overpriced coming on some flavorless iceberg lettuce with unripe strawberries although the grilled chicken was somewhat decent and the same goes for the dresseing it was still ridiculously overpriced and definitely not something worth $12 finally the boneless chicken wings were not only soggy and relatively cool they were saturated in watery flavorless sauce and you can definitely tell that these to were frozen We wasted nearly $60 this restaurant is definitely not the "real deal" read more

Had to fetch utensils because both the waitress and the person who dropped (literally) our plates didn't notice that there were no utensils or napkins. Food is what you'd expect - reheated and served semi warm. Would have avoided all together if original destination hadn't closed at 9pm. read more

I usually end up eating at 99 around once every five years and then I remember why I don't eat there. The food at 99 is not great and the prices are rather high. Great staff, good food for a major chain. We go there often, the wait is usually short and our favorite server is James, he is awesome. Gives great suggestions and very personable. Kids also eat free when the Red Sox win the day prior so that's a plus if you have children. read more

For a chain, this place is really good. The fillet Mignon was excellent and the french fries were great. Service was also top notch.
