Classic Bicycles are shaped differently, they are European, they have room for a basket and they are so dangerous it's almost manslaughter just putting a child on one, unless of course it has been completely checked and renovated to suit modern standards (or in other words has a fresh coat of non-lead paint and a good ringing bell) and they come in three speed or single speed. Maybe you want to resemble something out of 'The Great Gatsby' in order to attract a Robert Redford or Leonardo DiCaprio of your very own - probably better off searching in a Gay bar, but I jest - get yourself all decked out in chiffon and plonk yourself atop one of these classic tredlys. Gorgeous! Seriously though, this is a great little shop for specialists who want their new bike to be old again, as in "Everything old is new again" (Thanks Peter Allen, rest in peace) and are willing to pay for the authentic stuff. Actually I've compared prices and a lot of the time by going 'classic' you will save money - you will also avoid all the advancements made in lightweight materials, technological breakthroughs and safety features, but this isn't about any of that any way - this is about style, fashion, aesthetics - I'm kidding (!) these things are as safe as houses (apologies to the Wicked Wiitch of the West). Beautiful stuff really and even if it is more likely to see you run under a truck or a four wheel drive (still joking), you will be a gloriously genteel corpse who rode a wonderful bike - er - hang on, that doesn't sound right does it - maybe you would be best to stick to the bike tracks unless you are a guerrilla bicyclist when it comes to getting around on one of these classic bikes, maybe not. Just be safety smart wear your helmet and keep alert but not alarmed. Don't ride under the influence of drugs, alcohol or heavy metal! Little leather seats with big silver studs on big springs, soft metallic reds and lilacs, weaved baskets and a butt-load of ye-olde-charm. BUT. I've been in the store a few times to check the bikes out, and even had a little ride on a friend's. I'm not that impressed! These are heavy, clunky loads, and unless you only ride your bike once a fortnight dressed in tweed, this isn't that great a deal. As a commuter cyclist who rides their bike nearly every day, this bike struck me as wildly impractical and unwieldy. While $700 isn't bad for a brand new bike, if you really want something practical and beautiful, I'd recommend buying second hand or opting for something a little more lightweight. I bought a cute 60s Super Elliot from the Migrant Resource Centre (excellent organisation that sell on some donated bikes on Ebay that aren't needed), and while it isn't top-notch commuter material, it is a damn sight lighter and nimbler than the Classics. Another $100 bucks spent getting it serviced and I was on my way. Cycling has become pretty trendy in the last few years - and it makes sense. High petrol costs, climate change, functional exercise and the ability to skip past traffic are all good motivators. Although these bikes are very very beautiful, I would recommend buying a new bike that is more practical or hunting down the real thing second-hand.

A standard service will set you back $50 or $60, and he returns your bike looking and working like the day you bought it. If you live nearby, he'll pick your bike up and drop it back off for no extra charge - he just dropped mine back on Easter Sunday, after collecting it on Good Friday (!). So, for anyone in the inner-north-west of Adelaide, or who can get here easily enough, Rushy's comes highly recommended!

Every time I've been in the shop the owner's dog has been in residence, curled up on an old vinyl couch/chair, awkwardly forcing his lanky limbs into the space that just wasn't designed for him. He isn't overly impressed by people disturbing his sleep for a pat, however he will accept tributes if he's awake and in a good mood. They have a small, yet delightful range of fixed-gear bikes. They are quite pricey, but you are paying for quality and looks. Many online shops offer similar bikes for half the price but they are made no-where near as well and are definitely not as attractive. The service at Treadly is great, very personal and helpful. They are willing to do almost anything to make sure your bike is exactly how you want it and that you are happy. Treadly also helps people to create their own customized bike from scratch. They sell or can order in the pieces you need to do this. The shop also has a large range of accessories. Bike lights, shoes, locks and helmets! Their helmets are very cool, such as one with the Union Jack, making helmet hair slightly more bearable.

Received a quote for approx. $30 +Cost of nipples estimated around $2 per nipple. Dropped off the wheel on Saturday, stripped of cassette, tyres and wheel tape (all that was required was changing nipples out) and made a point of double checking the quote of approx. $30+ parts. I also asked for a call back regarding a price to change out the bearings. I received no communication all week, so I called up Friday and firstly was told they weren't sure where my wheel was, after it was found I was told it was being brought back to the Norwood store from the city and I would get a call when it was returned. I asked for extra nipples to be added for spares and that my wife would pick them all up the next day. Come 330pm Saturday I had received no contact yet again so I called up, once again was told wasn't sure where my wheel, after they found it I was informed that they had performed a 'wheel rebuild' and I would be charged $168. $120 for labour and $48 for parts. Obviously shocked at the difference, I questioned; had bearings been changed, spokes been changed, something other than what I asked for and was quoted for? No, and there is nothing we can do for you was the answer. Of course my wife picked it up and received no extra nipples and upon inspection I have found that the wheel isn't even true. All I can do is make an impassioned plea that if you take your business to bicycle express please keep one hand on your wallet because you can be sure they'll be trying to rob you!

With cyclist numbers booming at the moment its probably best you do the same. They always have plenty of end of season stock and anyone in the biz knows you save hundreds and truth be known these things haven't changed much in the past 100 years. If you have the urge to ride then you'll jump on any old thing. I would list the brands in stock but they're are so many you're better off just getting down there and mounting your new two wheel steed.

What I remember from the service is that they didn't charge me much for the repairs and they also did additional things such as readjusting my brakes on the house. I like the fact they have attention to detail and that the people who work there are people who actually know their stuff and care about bicycles. Since it isn't located right in the main CBD, not many people might know that their shop is there, but they are definitely worth going to if you are looking for a new bicycle, bicycle gear or if you need something repaired.

But the accountability shown by these guys in handling the issue, getting the ball rolling in having them repaired and making sure I was looked after has blown me away. I have been using BMCR to service my bikes for over 8 years now, and the main reason I keep going…read moreback is because I don't really need to. Bikes are fixed first time. That annoying creek in your bottom bracket will disappear, even if it was actually a problem with the rear hub. Wheels will stay straight (well at least until you do something really nasty to them) and gears will change quickly and quietly every time (especially if you follow their advice and lube the chain between services). Over the years they have serviced my carbon road bike, my dual suspension MTB and my 18 year old steel commute bike. After each service, they send me an email to let me know it is done (I am sure they call or SMS if you want) which helps make the whole experience trouble free. You will ride away on a bike that feels brand new, even if the bike is old enough to drink. They sponsor the Adelaide Mountain Bike Club and provide service at the races. They even have their own line of DBAD cycling gear to encourage cyclists to be friendly to each other out on the road. They are particularly good at sorting out troublesome disc brakes which some other stores struggle to get right. All this, together with the friendly service is the reason I recommend this place to my friends. This is a bike shop for people who ride bikes.
