My first visit there was a service, which was well priced and the bike performed well & even got a light clean. My second visit was to repair an unknown hub noise. They opened the hub, found nothing wrong and didn't charge me for it. Great service. My third visit was to buy 10 Continental unboxed road tubes for just $50. A bargain. Not all their prices are great so in terms of cost it's not a one stop shop. But....they're knowledgeable and friendly and they do coffee.

You can buy Victoria a 27" Super Elliott women's frame with Raleigh front forks or make a statement with Carlos, a men's 56cm Peugeot frame and forks finished in a brilliant burnt orange colour. In the past they have created and sold machines like the Ruby Rose and of course she was ruby red in colour, there has been a beautiful blue Men's 56cm Repco Superlite called Percy and there's even been a Bob Neil! Anyone who knows anything about Bob Neil would know I can't say anymore about Bob Neil. These machines have been lovingly restored in this wholly Adelaide based business. It was about this time that the boy decided to try out some tricks on his yellow and black BMX bike. Long story short, I sucked at doing tricks, so as soon as I was tall enough I bugged my folks to buy me a racer....speed was now my friend! My interest in bikes, and in particular the Tour De France has seen me darken the doorstep of International Cycles on Payneham Road many times....mainly just to look because the bikes I like are, well, not the cheapest forms of transportation you will find. I really like International Cycles, and although they don't have the biggest range in town, they really know there stuff, and are never to busy to have a chat. By the way, they do stock cheaper bikes too, but they aren't any where near as pretty as the pricey ones!

My partner and I don't usually fit into this category. We are somewhat more 'hardcore' cyclists, or perhaps you'd call us sports cyclists. However, my man loves this shop because he is building himself a fixed speed bike. The shop people love him because he's a geek, and collectively they get their geek on about bike parts and gear and construction. This is a great little place to come in for a chat or to find out about what's available in terms of commuter bikes. Every time I've been in the shop the owner's dog has been in residence, curled up on an old vinyl couch/chair, awkwardly forcing his lanky limbs into the space that just wasn't designed for him. He isn't overly impressed by people disturbing his sleep for a pat, however he will accept tributes if he's awake and in a good mood. Their dog highlights this business's focus on lifestyle, and how they aim to help bike-lovers to personalise their chosen mode of transport, and allow for a little art to creep into their commute.

If you are not familiar with this term, 'fixies' are single-speed bikes that generally have no breaks. If you want to be part of this phenomenon, Treadly is your place to go. They have a small, yet delightful range of fixed-gear bikes. They are quite pricey, but you are paying for quality and looks. Many online shops offer similar bikes for half the price but they are made no-where near as well and are definitely not as attractive. The service at Treadly is great, very personal and helpful. They are willing to do almost anything to make sure your bike is exactly how you want it and that you are happy. Treadly also helps people to create their own customized bike from scratch. They sell or can order in the pieces you need to do this. The shop also has a large range of accessories. Bike lights, shoes, locks and helmets! Their helmets are very cool, such as one with the Union Jack, making helmet hair slightly more bearable.

For a tiny space they manage to use every square inch of it and if you're jumping on the tredly bandwagon then Super E's isn't a bad place to start. Classic Bicycles are shaped differently, they are European, they have room for a basket and they are so dangerous it's almost manslaughter just putting a child on one, unless of course it has been completely checked and renovated to suit modern standards (or in other words has a fresh coat of non-lead paint and a good ringing bell) and they come in three speed or single speed. Maybe you want to resemble something out of 'The Great Gatsby' in order to attract a Robert Redford or Leonardo DiCaprio of your very own - probably better off searching in a Gay bar, but I jest - get yourself all decked out in chiffon and plonk yourself atop one of these classic tredlys. Gorgeous! Seriously though, this is a great little shop for specialists who want their new bike to be old again, as in "Everything old is new again" (Thanks Peter Allen, rest in peace) and are willing to pay for the authentic stuff. Actually I've compared prices and a lot of the time by going 'classic' you will save money - you will also avoid all the advancements made in lightweight materials, technological breakthroughs and safety features, but this isn't about any of that any way - this is about style, fashion, aesthetics - I'm kidding (!) these things are as safe as houses (apologies to the Wicked Wiitch of the West). Beautiful stuff really and even if it is more likely to see you run under a truck or a four wheel drive (still joking), you will be a gloriously genteel corpse who rode a wonderful bike - er - hang on, that doesn't sound right does it - maybe you would be best to stick to the bike tracks unless you are a guerrilla bicyclist when it comes to getting around on one of these classic bikes, maybe not. Just be safety smart wear your helmet and keep alert but not alarmed. Don't ride under the influence of drugs, alcohol or heavy metal! I love this shop so it doesn't really matter what the dangers are, once you go classic you will never go back to the future (shut up Marty McFly!).

Little leather seats with big silver studs on big springs, soft metallic reds and lilacs, weaved baskets and a butt-load of ye-olde-charm. BUT. I've been in the store a few times to check the bikes out, and even had a little ride on a friend's. I'm not that impressed! These are heavy, clunky loads, and unless you only ride your bike once a fortnight dressed in tweed, this isn't that great a deal. As a commuter cyclist who rides their bike nearly every day, this bike struck me as wildly impractical and unwieldy. While $700 isn't bad for a brand new bike, if you really want something practical and beautiful, I'd recommend buying second hand or opting for something a little more lightweight. I bought a cute 60s Super Elliot from the Migrant Resource Centre (excellent organisation that sell on some donated bikes on Ebay that aren't needed), and while it isn't top-notch commuter material, it is a damn sight lighter and nimbler than the Classics. Another $100 bucks spent getting it serviced and I was on my way. Cycling has become pretty trendy in the last few years - and it makes sense. High petrol costs, climate change, functional exercise and the ability to skip past traffic are all good motivators. Although these bikes are very very beautiful, I would recommend buying a new bike that is more practical or hunting down the real thing second-hand.
