I walked in there the other week and asked for a good price on a bike and they told me it wasn't possible because the bike was too new. 15 minutes later I bought the same bike from Super Elliot's in Rundle street, with helpful staff and a good buy. I guess I have to thank them for their rude and condescending demeanour. I ended up with what I wanted and helping a small SA business.

We came back, and still the same personal service as previously. We tried many bikes until we were clearer on what we wanted and then were allowed to go off for a test ride. A bit of fine tuning..nothing was too much trouble and we were treated with courtesy at all times, which not being very cluey, is often not the case. The purchase was made before we realised that we already had two bikes in the van and couldn't fit any more. Just when I was going to ask if we could return with an empty vehicle, the owner, Steve, offered to deliver to our door at no extra charge. how good is that! thank you Steve. The guys who run this shop, Craig and Andy, are both fantastic to deal with - laid-back, friendly, and more than willing to help you out at short notice. I bought my bike here at the start of the year, and they knocked about $100 off the price, because I asked nicely. They then looked after me with a free service (which comes with all their bikes) with only a day's turnaround - surprisingly fast. I highly recommend dealing with these guys - their bikes are good quality, good prices, and they know what they're talking about.

Standish Cycles is one of the better all-rounder bike shops I've come across. They do a decent…read morerange of just about everything, including mid-range road bikes, mountain bikes, commuters, BMX and kids bikes. You don't see many BMX bikes sold in standard stores, yet these guys have a good range. They're also more than happy to order you in parts for fixed-gear bikes or BMX if you're building something uncommon. The guys in the store are very helpful, and all bike-mad, which means they know their stuff and will tell you a lot extra if you're keen to know what's going on or what they've been up to. Their range of kids bikes has quite dramatically increased over the past month, presumably in time for Christmas, and they have also extended their stock of retro cruisers, which come in a variety of colours. Also, a small bike extension to add onto a larger bike is only $229 - that's one way to enjoy the summer holidays with your kids!

They've been at West Lakes for as long as I can remember, and the staff really seem to know what they're doing. I've gone into this store several times with my mum, trying to find extra bike or skateboard accessories for my brother, even though we had no idea what we were looking for, and all we had to do was attempt to explain what we were looking for to the staff members and they immediately knew what we were on about. That's what I call good customer service.

This shop sell a lot of new vintage style bikes, with high handlebars, huge comfy seats and a maximum speed of around 15 km per hour (unless you're going down an enormous hill). To balance this, they have a small range of road racers, as well as a good range of hybrids. They've got quite a few kids' bikes, which the Port Road store doesn't deal in, so it's a great bike shop for families. The prices here are quite decent, and it's worth looking out for older stock or any specials, because you can get yourself a bargain here.

My partner and I don't usually fit into this category. We are somewhat more 'hardcore' cyclists, or perhaps you'd call us sports cyclists. However, my man loves this shop because he is building himself a fixed speed bike. The shop people love him because he's a geek, and collectively they get their geek on about bike parts and gear and construction. This is a great little place to come in for a chat or to find out about what's available in terms of commuter bikes. Every time I've been in the shop the owner's dog has been in residence, curled up on an old vinyl couch/chair, awkwardly forcing his lanky limbs into the space that just wasn't designed for him. He isn't overly impressed by people disturbing his sleep for a pat, however he will accept tributes if he's awake and in a good mood. Their dog highlights this business's focus on lifestyle, and how they aim to help bike-lovers to personalise their chosen mode of transport, and allow for a little art to creep into their commute.

If you are not familiar with this term, 'fixies' are single-speed bikes that generally have no breaks. If you want to be part of this phenomenon, Treadly is your place to go. They have a small, yet delightful range of fixed-gear bikes. They are quite pricey, but you are paying for quality and looks. Many online shops offer similar bikes for half the price but they are made no-where near as well and are definitely not as attractive. The service at Treadly is great, very personal and helpful. They are willing to do almost anything to make sure your bike is exactly how you want it and that you are happy. Treadly also helps people to create their own customized bike from scratch. They sell or can order in the pieces you need to do this. The shop also has a large range of accessories. Bike lights, shoes, locks and helmets! Their helmets are very cool, such as one with the Union Jack, making helmet hair slightly more bearable.

Though I normally shop elsewhere I have recently worked out that this is my closest shop and one that I should become closer to. Now located in a far mor emodern store that its old digs, Bailetti's has everything you could ever need for pretty much every sort you could dream of (although I didn't see any curling stones when I was last in). The Prices are pretty standard, but you can come across a super special or two in their clearance room or between seasons. In terms of selection and variety there are others around of a similar, but due to Bailetti being an SA Icon, it will get my vote every time!

They have a VIP card which always gets you discount, friendly staff, the store is never that busy and there is a sale section in a separate room with heaps of bargains for a range of ages, sexes, sizes and tastes. I like their range of soccer boots and the people that serve you know about the boots and find ones that fit and suit you best. Bailetti is a great sport store, with heaps of equipment as well. They can also order things for you and customise products with numbers, names etc. And they cater for teams as well, sorting out strips etc.
