Strawberry Matcha Latte
Areeta W.

Super friendly staff but matcha mid! This review is specifically for the matcha! We were so hyped for the matcha because of the darkness of the green in their drinks but were both really confused when there was almost no matcha taste. We got an iced Matcha Latte and then, they also recommended us an iced Strawberry Matcha Latte. The strawberry overtook the matcha and ended up tasting like strawberry milk. The regular matcha latte tasted like regular milk. Overall, I'd come back for other things!

Mango Matcha with Oat

Had the mango matcha with Oat milk. 10/10, definitely coming here again. Very flavorful and very tasty, not too sweet either

Beef on sizzling plate (set meal)

Super close to our hotel so we came for dinner. Loved the Japanese vibe & large space. Food was okay; the beef on sizzling plate was slightly saltier than I expected. The bacon pasta was a small serving. Service was a bit slow. I only saw 2 servers. We had to request for water a couple of times. We spent over $50 CAD for okay food.

Japanese Breakfast: Tuna Onigiri, Japanese Omelette, Miso.

During my recent visit to Vancouver--I discovered this hidden gem that fully seduced me with its quaint, high quality & skillful culinary prowess. I never expected that this unassuming cafe would become one of my favorite meals during my travels. The crew & service here is very friendly & the chef has some sort of magic happening in the kitchen. Their baristas make killer oat milk lattes -- and their complete breakfast meal with a Japanese omelette, tuna filled onigiri & miso soup lives on in my dreams post my adventures. So simple, so delectable & utterly delicious. I cannot wait to return!

Love the calmness when we first walked in...the service was really good. On to the food...omurice hit the spot. Don't expect those that you see on IG where semi-runny eggs gushes out when you cut it in half...it's the traditional omurice. I love every bite of it...that ketchup sauce I could never make...the green tea is a bit on the weak side but maybe I was expecting something as intense as those I had in Kyoto...but I think the intensity here works for most of people...

Cozy environment and was eager to try the Japanese themed breakfast combo. The tamagoyaki (Japanese egg roll) is on the cold side and I wish it to be slightly more fluffy. The origiri is warm and the tuna filling inside the origiri can be a bit more. Overall an interesting dining experience. The sesame dressing of the little salad is delightful.

This place was located very close to our accommodation, so we came here for coffee and tea to start our day. Upon first glance and when we sat down, I found this place very cute. I love the design and decor. I thought this was just a cafe at first, but they also served sit down food and breakfast. I was very surprised at how large their menu was. I ordered the Hojicha latte with oat milk and my boyfriend got the Detox tea. I loved my Hojicha, it was rich, earthy, and creamy too from the milk. It was very good. Also the Detox tea was good too. It was soothing and I really liked the faint peppermint notes. My boyfriend and I shared the whole pot, and for the price I thought it was very reasonable. Also the whole tea setup was very cute and pretty, I'm inspired to have my own tea set at home just like this lol. Service was amazing. I felt very welcome and taken care of. Compared to other establishments, their service is one of the best I've ever received. Next time I'd come here again to try their food and I was also interested in trying their matcha affogato. I'd also want to come back and read, journal, or study here for an afternoon. Our experience was very memorable, I hope to one day return again :) Thank you for taking care of us.

Hojicha latte

Cute Japanese cafe with traditional Japanese eats in Vancouver. I was excited to stumble upon this cafe. The Japanese breakfast was delicious and filling. The hojicha latte was a first for me to try this flavor and it was very rich/nutty. They also have a lunch/early dinner options which I didn't have a chance to try. The service however was slow. It took about 30 min for us to order from someone after we were given menus/waters. It was getting busy but I also noticed some tables also took note of the time it was taking for their order to arrive. My latte came after another 30 min of ordering. The food items came about another 10-15 min after that. The food was delicious and I did end up ordering take out after few days later with no issues upon pick up. Our in-dining service could have been a fluke but don't expect fast food service. Bring a book

i stumbled across this cozy little cafe tucked behind denman beer wine and spirits, on 1789 comox street. you'd never expect it from the outside, but once you walk in, it opens up into this spacious, warm haven. the lighting is soft, the design modern yet inviting, with wooden accents and a floral garland framing a huge window that floods the space with natural light. it's got that perfect blend of relaxed energy, people chatting quietly, while others focused on work, it was a chill vibe. they've got these super instagrammable parfaits and homemade japanese desserts, not to mention a killer selection of high quality, handcrafted organic loose teas. there's even a table selling stickers, cards, and delicate origami crane earrings. oh, and did i mention the piano? it's tucked away but fits perfectly into the whole aesthetic. the place oozes charm, and you can tell it's got that real homey japanese feel. the service was on point too, genuine, friendly, and top-notch. the staff really made me feel welcome. i only popped in for a drink but i'm definitely coming back for brunch and dessert. i went with the strawberry matcha latte, and the server asked if i preferred matcha or hojicha. she told me hojicha's nuttier and has less caffeine, so i decided to give this a try. one sip and i was hooked. it's brown in colour, i thought it was coffee, a little smokey, with this roasted, slightly bitter edge. honestly, so good. and they subbed in oat milk without a second thought, which was a nice touch. the strawberry purée with the hojicha was a game changer, sweet, but not overpowering, just perfectly balanced. next time, brunch is happening. no question.

A look inside their omurice
Veronica V.

I came for a quick lunch one day in October 2023 and decided to try their omurice with a pot of tea. The service was friendly and quick, the cafe a quiet and clean oasis. The tea was good, and the omurice was... very ketchupy. Supposedly it was a chicken fried rice, but I detected only one very tiny cube of chicken in my entire order. The dish itself was well made, IF you like ketchup as the main flavour and ingredient. But if you don't enjoy ketchup, I'd avoid this one lol.

This is a really nice casual Japanese restaurant. The design is spacious but cozy - it's laid out more like a coffee shop than a typical full-service restaurant, but they do have table service here (with the caveat that you go to the counter yourself to pay when you're finished). I was there in the early evening, and it wasn't empty but not super busy either. The atmosphere was very calm and quiet. Even if all the tables were occupied, I would imagine this isn't a place that gets very loud. The menu features yoshoku cuisine/Western-style Japanese with options suitable for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert. FYI, it looks like the only vegan menu item (besides drinks) is the avocado toast, though there are a small handful of vegetarian choices. During the spring and summer they had a matcha pop-up in collaboration with Yutaka Tea Room but I'm not sure if that's still going... their Instagram mentions limited drinks until August 31, so I'm not sure if the whole pop-up has ended or just the special drinks. Here's what I ordered when I visited in the spring, during the collaboration: Mentaiko cream spaghetti: Simple but really good. The sauce was very umami but not excessive or heavy. Bread pudding: This was lovely. I was surprised at how fluffy the texture was. Even with the light maple syrup drizzle, it wasn't too sweet. This meant that the eggy taste of the pudding was rather pronounced, so if that sounds off-putting to you, this might not be the dessert for you. Personally I enjoyed this style more than American-style bread pudding which can be really heavy and sweet. If you want something lighter, this is great. Coffee jelly hojicha latte: The hojicha latte was great - it was clear the hojicha was high quality and prepared well. I liked the flavour pairing of hojicha and coffee jelly. Matcha cake: I saw this wrapped up, looking very portable, when I went to the register to pay, so I grabbed it to go and enjoyed it the next day. Again, the texture was light but the matcha was strong, and it wasn't too sweet so I could really pick up the fine flavour of the matcha. The prices are reasonable for restaurant prices... but be prepared that it is typical restaurant prices, not "cafe" prices. But if what I got is representative of the menu, it's carefully-made food and they take good care of you with polite and attentive service.

Blueberry cheesecake and Detox tea.

I went to 93 coffee in Denman Mall last weekend. It has a Japanese menu, but not sushi, which I really appreciated. I've spent significant time traveling in Japan and have found Vancouver's Japanese restaurants to be very sushi, sashimi, and recently ramen focused. While I do like those, Japan has many other unique foods that are awesome. When I saw 93's menu I was very happy to see different options represented. I only got their cheesecake with a detox tea this time bc I was there for a book club meeting. It was really good, very light and silky. I want to try their omurice, curries, breakfast set, and most of their menu. I'm looking forward to going again and trying other things on the menu. Service was good. Atmosphere is simple but has a fancy feeling. You can make reservations too, so I would consider this place to be more upscale than your typical coffee shop.

Melon Cream Soda
Dom K.

Hojicha has a very strong look, smell, and taste. Melon cream soda is perfect and looks immaculate. The breakfast set is very worth it. There is so much food and it has an incredible spread of nutrients to start your day. It also has a nice blend of hot and cold dishes. I think the only peculiarity is that they use a Colby or Monterrey Jack for their ham and cheese, unlike the usual American slice. They also offer free WiFi and the service is great. Seems that the waiter does such a good job that his picture is on the front of the menu.

Happy to discover that this place was nice and quiet inside so would definitely consider coming back here again. Food was awesome. I absolutely loved my Shakshuka. Might be the best Shakshuka I've ever had. Not that I'm any authority figure on what a Shakshuka should taste like. But I really enjoyed this one. The combination of flavors, the runny egg yolks, the gooeyness of the cheese...it was just such a wonderfully comforting and belly warming meal. I saw a Cinnamon Honey Latte on the board and decided to order that for my drink. These days, I can never tell when the word "Latte" is being used to describe a coffee beverage or whether it's being used to describe a beverage that has milk in it. A Matcha latte for example, tends to just be a sweetedned Matcha beverage with milk in it. No coffee thrown in. I was kinda hoping this Cinnamon Honey Latte would be milk with cinnamon and honey thrown in. It turned out to be a coffee beverage. No complaints about it. It's on me for assuming that it was milk with cinnamon and honey thrown in. I should have probably asked our server about the beverage before simply ordering it. Will make sure to do that if/when we end up here again. Kinda had my eye on the Turkish Apple Tea though so might just order that next time and the whole "Latte" dilemma wouldn't be an issue with that. My daughter's Avocado Toast looked super yummy as well. Might try ordering that next time, although Michelangelo's Mediterranean Spread was also kinda calling out to me!

We got 3 dishes to share: Mushroom Benedict ($18), Bacon Benedict ($19), and Lox Bagel ($18). Overall, they tasted good but I found the carbs/base to be underwhelming. Bagel was rock hard, to the point where we just took the fillings out and ate them separately. The biscuit(?) was alright but tasted like english muffin to me. The hollandaise sauce was one of the better one I tasted though. Beverage wise, my flat white tasted excellent, though my friends said that the drip and Vietnamese coffee were so-so. Ambiance was pretty cozy with eclectic decorations spread throughout. However, and this could be because we were seated at the back, service did seem absent as they seemed to forget about us (we had to chase them down to get the bill). There was only one family ahead of me when I entered, who was asking questions about bean recommendations. The person at the order counter was really helpful providing them with good information. When it was my turn to order, it was quick since I had already selected beans that I wanted to purchase, and my oat latte. Option was asked if I wanted to dine in or takeout, and I went with the latter. After I got my drink, I took a seat on one of the benches they have outside the store. There's also a decent amount of indoor seating and an outdoor patio section in front of the store. Not my first time trying Nemesis since I've been to Vancouver before, but definitely a reminder of why they are listed as one of the World's 100 Best Coffee Shops. My mom was asked to get up and wait in line, while another party was allowed to sit. It was embarrassing and poorly handled. When I pointed out the long wait, the response was essentially that they have "the best coffee in Vancouver". That kind of attitude only works if the coffee is actually exceptional -- and it wasn't. It was below average and not worth the wait or the attitude. Very overhyped. Nice-looking space, weak service, average coffee. Kafka next door is a better option for coffee and cookie.
