We went last night to celebrate my wife's retirement. Outstanding meal in a very clean, well appointed dining room with a great view of the waters off Cedar Key. Very good, friendly service. Our entire party was thrilled with our dinners including shrimp, short ribs and scallops. The Key Lime cake is out of this world!! read more

Best meal ever! Thanks Chef Jordan. Fresh shrimp, Hearty Clam chowder, Unique heart of palm salad with a bouquet of flavors, most tasty fish- mullet- prepared specially for my needs, A perfectly rounded side salad with watermelon radish And, the comforting unctuous sweet potato fries. Yum. Rebecca was a super-sweet server. We felt the TLC all around. Plus, views of the sunset over the docks. Glorious! read more

New owners have made HUGE improvements to this water-side Restaurant! It is truly beautiful from its fantastic scenic gulf views to its hand-crafted cedar tables. But the food is the big star here. Chef inspired southern dishes along with gulf favorites / sandwiches.Try the grilled shrimp and grits and be prepared to be amazed. They have a great bar and deck to adjust you to "island time". read more

The restaurant is clean/new with a nice view, but terrible service. Took over 40 min for our order, which the waitress never bothered to mention that someone dropped it and part had to be re-cooked. When bill arrived nothing was deducted. read more

Must go place. Good service, great views and great food. Very good clam chowder, grits and lemon pepper grilled shrimp. But, the best was the Bacon- wrapped, grilled gator bites kabobs. Best tasting and most creative alligator bites dish I've had. A MUST!!! read more

2019 isn't a good year for 83. I understand it is a holiday and they don't want to move tables. We don't expect them to put tables together for a group of 10+. We stopped by for lunch on the 4th and they abruptly stated they didn't have room and the kitchen was behind. My sister said that's fine we will just have some drinks and apps she said well the bar is behind too. We left. So we decided to go back on July 5. Downstairs was sort of full, but they're aren't that many tables. there was a table for 6 open so part of our group sat there and we hung around waiting for another table to open. The hostess came by and rudely stated the same thing they said yesterday. We can't move tables and it'll be awhile for a table to open. Like she didn't want us there ? We waited anyway. We weren't in a hurry. 4 waitresses were standing by the bar, one was eating. Horrible service. Just rude. We did eventually get other tables which were scattered about the restaurant. No one came to the table to take our drink order so we went to the bar to get drinks, paid, and tipped her. She turned to a server and said whose table is that she keeps coming here for drinks. We took our drinks to the table and waited for menus while the waitresses stood around chatting and eating. Finally someone brought us menus and a young blonde girl ended up taking care of us. She was very nice. We waited an hour for food but that was fine because we were having drinks and the kids were playing pool. The food was good. I have been going to this restaurant for years, even before it was 83 west, and unfortunately this year was a terrible experience. Lucky for them there aren't many restaurants here so I'm sure people will still go back even though the service was terrible. read more

Good service, new and clean, delicious food. The shrimp and grouper were excellently prepared and the Cole slaw was different but oh so delicious, a must try. Very pleased with everything! read more

We checked this place out on our first trip to Cedar Key as it had such good reviews. We sat outside on the deck as we wished to have a view. It was a great spot to sit for the sole reason we got to see TONS of dolphins playing. This perhaps kept the service a little slow at first as we were the only ones out there. They were friendly though and accomodating so it made up for it. The prices are a little pricey, which would be fine, however I don't feel hold up to the portion size. We ordered the Steam Pot option thinking it would be enough for 2 people to share as a steam pot is from similiar locations. It was more of a tapas size for 2 people then a meal, or perhaps a small meal for one person. The Gator drink was very tasty however as was the Key Lime Pie that came highly recommended. My only complaint on the Key Lime Pie is it is more of a cake then a pie. Overall, it was an okay experience, but it did not hope up to the reviews. I would def spend my money elsewhere next time. read more

Close to a 4.5, started with fried green tomatoes, were really good. I had shrimp basket and grandaughter had Caesar salad with grilled shrimp. My wife ordered fried green tomato BLT, too big for any human being but she enjoyed what she could. We really enjoyed sitting next to and above water. Bathrooms were clean and fresh. Wait staff was great. Would recommend to anyone stopping in town. read more

If i could give 0 stars i would!!!! The worst customer service i have ever received. We called ahead because we had a larger group for dinner, arrived and were told we needed to sit next to those on the same check - not that bad but a little strange. Ordered apps and had to wait 30 mins for them, not a single word from anybody about our food taking a long time. Had to go up to the bar and ask for refills. Then received our food (a few people at a time over a 20 minute span) - 2 people waited for wraps that didn't come until all others were done and left overs were boxed up. I tried canceling the order twice to no avail, and still no word from the waiter or manager, it came out while we were all ready to leave. Had to go find the manager, told her the situation and asked for her to take the 2 wraps off the bill. She got the owners wife and i was told no because we were a large group - bizarre!!! She copped an attitude and was rude the entire time ( all over 2 $10 wraps mind you). Get back to the table after she finally says she will. Still waiting on the other people's bills that were asked for a good while ago, and crab puffs that were ordered THEN came out!!! Asked her to take those off because .. are you serious!?? Why are we even having to ask for these accommodations?? She refused, starting yelling across the restaurant and making a scene and then threatened to call the cops when we said this was ridiculous we weren't paying for the crab puffs. This is all the wife of the owner of the restaurant. So classless with absolutely poor customer service skills. I don't know how they stay in business, because i watched them treat other out-of-towners similarly. Finally just paid the bill and left because we were so embarrassed for them and the way they handled the situation. The manager and owners wife just sat there all night not intervening or helping their obviously struggling staff.. Will never return and hope you don't either. read more

Went in at 8:21 to eat on a Saturday night. Find said they were only taking reservations up until 815, then therestaurant was open to the general public. Went to the waitress stand- only reservations all night despite open tables. Wow. Never again. read more

Was there Wednesday for lunch. Our server was Jessie who did a great job for us. She was hampered due to the slow kitchen. The food was superb and would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone going to Cedar Key. The Key Lime cake is terrific. read more

Really good food and friendly staff. Shrimp and grits were awesome so were the baked beans, burgers, etc. we went there twice because our experience at Carlins was terrible. And if you have food allergies they are very very accommodating. Christina the bartender was awesome. It was a good birthday for me. read more

We had a wonderful dinner on the deck with cool breezes blowing. Crab cake sliders on homemade buns were amazing! Fresh shrimp platters fried to perfection were delicious. Great waitstaff, Dean and Shannon were very attentive read more

Excellent food; nice service. There is a full service bar that you can sit at as well. So good we ate dinner here twice during our stay. Seafood is of course very fresh but the chef prepares it perfectly so that it's a real treat. Non-seafood meals were also good. Everyone enjoyed their apps and entrees both times we went. Going thru some construction downstairs because of the hurricane but the upstairs dining room is fine. Definitely recommend. read more

THANK YOU for a wonderful new year's eve dinner! My family has had a tradition of watching the last sunset of every year at Cedar key, which is about an hour's drive from Gainesville. HOWEVER, the last few years have been so disappointing with regards to restaurants. We seem to have tried them all, and nothing even came close to the Captain's Table (which is now settling in to an eyesore of disrepair..so depressing - It DOES NOT add to the city's charm!) This year, with our son's graduation from college, we wanted to give his childhood tradition one last shot. and lo and behold - 83 West! Overlooking the water, we were treated like royalty and served the most delicious food we have had in years. Authentic fried green tomatoes and blue crab 'fingers' so delicious that we got an order to go. My son devoured them when we got home. It has been so long since I actually tasted cold/peeled shrimp..I had given up on them since they started to taste only like the sauce. Well, hope springs eternal. And I couldn't have hoped for anything more delicious! The men folk didn't come up for air when the fried shrimp was delivered to the table. The waitress was the real deal - a native of the area..she actually knew the only family we ever knew in Horseshoe. She made us feel like family. Now...drumroll please - the Key Lime CAKE was to die for. If you don't get anything else, order this cake. I don't care if you say you are full. Order it! You are most welcome...You will thank me when you disrupt its perfect presentation. The cake was magical; moist with the magical taste of FRESH key limes. Real whipped cream, and fresh fruits that didn't taste like GMOs. When you go, please order a slice for me. I will be back to pick it up. read more

Worst customer service I've ever experienced! Visited Cedar Key this past weekend and ATTEMPTED to eat at 83 West Downstairs with a group of 10. The place is large, has 3 pool tables and bar stools all along the water front. There are about 5 or 6 tables to sit and eat and some were occupied. When we arrived we did not have a reservation when they asked and were willing to wait (although not all tables were full). The hostess seemed dumbfounded on what to do with the 10 of us and wandered around. We waited another 5 minutes or so and she came back and said they could move other customers already sitting so we could have tables that were already pushed together. We said absolutely not, we'll just come back another day and make reservations. The next day we had more people join our group and we ensured we made reservations for 17 the next day. We arrived on time at 630pm and they had done nothing in preparation for our arrival. There was only one family of 3 sitting at a table and all the rest were empty. When we arrived a different employee with long dark hair and glasses was at the front who seemed annoyed to deal with us. She walked away from us, talked to a couple more employees and came back and said we'd need to same checks needed to sit together. I thought it was odd as there were not many people in the entire place but we would accommodate. She then took us to two tables that were next to each other. We asked if we could just pull them together and she said no. We asked why and she said that they couldn't move one of the tables but never gave an explanation. We then asked if they had high chairs and she rolled her eyes and said they only had 2 (we needed 3). We asked if they had booster seats, she again rolled her eyes and said no. When we sat down to order we ordered drinks, they came out 10 minutes later, then we ordered 4 or 5 appetizers upon the waiter coming back (which almost never happened). Almost 40 minutes later the appetizers started coming out. No one asked if we needed our drinks refreshed and they did not provide any plates to eat on. We ordered our food and were told that they did not have a kids menu. After that the waiter then disappeared again and about another 40 minutes later the meals started to arrive. Not everyone received their food and after sitting there for another 20 minutes, no waiter and 5 people still hadn't received their food. Another 10 minutes passed and 3 plates came out. Finally someone came over to the table, she said she cleans off the tables, and we told her we were still waiting on 2 chicken wraps and wanted to cancel the two remaining meals because the rest of us had already eaten. She said she herself couldn't do that but would go y'all to someone that could. 10 minutes go by and she returns and asks if we needed any to-go boxes and we asked again to cancel the 2 orders and she said she couldn't do that but would talk to someone. We told her we asked that 10 minutes ago and to confirm if they'd been cancelled. She started getting flustered and said she would send someone over. Again, no one came over. 5 minutes later the 2 meals show up. One of us got up from the table and walked over to 2 employees standing by the front to say we asked twice for the 2 orders to be cancelled 30 minutes ago and then revived them so we wanted them comped. The employee who said she was the manager said that if the meals had already arrived and someone took a bite from it that they wouldnt comp them. The manager became angry and finally said she would cook them. As this was happening an appetizer we order over 1.5 hrs ago came out AFTER multiple people from our party left and we said we weren't paying for the app. She yelled and cursed across the restaurant saying she was going to call the cops unless we paid for the app. After nore yelling we paid but we could not believe the horrible customer service and management of that place. DO NOT waste your money OR TIME on this terrible establishment!!!!! read more
