The inside is interesting and attractive. There was no sound buffering & with the busy time we were there, we could hardly hear each other. The service was good in spite of it being very busy. I had the salmon croquets which looked and tasted exactly a falafel. It was green and dry inside so I don't recommend them. The fried Brussels sprouts & my friends fries were good. The three star rating was for the ambiance and service, but not impressed with the food. If I'm over that way again, I might give it another chance, but won't make a special trip to go back. read more

We stopped in for lunch on a friends road trip. We saw the good reviews and it didn't disappoint. It was very unique, keeping the original architecture of the former church. It was very clean. The food was healthy and fresh and a good value. You really can't get fast food for much cheaper nowadays and this was a high quality restaurant. I had the Nashville hot chicken sandwich with a salad. It was a very good sauce. The waitress was very attentive and personable. Th food was delicious, except for my bun being a little dry for my sandwich and the chicken slightly over cooked, the service was awesome, i didn't catch our servers name but she was a sweet woman and very attentive, very new modern age style about the place. First time here, brought by a good friend to celebrate my birthday. Very nice, friendly host and server (Seth) responded to our questions about the menu regarding his personal favorites and answered our many questions about how the restaurant came to be.The interior of the restaurant is AWESOME and unique. All the lights hanging from the ceiling indicate it would be beautiful at night as well. Best of all, the food was wonderful, from the Brussels sprouts appetizer, best in town, to my meatball sub and my friend's buffalo chicken salad. Make sure you read till the end! I've eaten at this restaurant twice now. We visited on their opening weekend a year ago and were terribly disappointed. The service and quality of the food were severely lacking. However, a year later, we decided to give 71 South another shot and I'm happy to report that they have improved drastically in every area. We went as a party of four and were seated immediately at 6:00 pm on a Saturday evening. Our server Samuel was excellent. He greeted us immediately, checked in often, helpfully answered all of our questions about the menu, and never let our water carafe run out. As other reviews have stated, the ambiance here is nice. It is in a renovated church so the ceiling is quite high, but they have installed plenty of sound-deadening panels to cut down on echo. The place was reasonably full and our party could all hear each other well. Our party included two plant-based eaters. They reported that while they were not blown away by the variety of vegetarian and vegan-friendly offerings on the menu, they were both happy with what they ordered. The black bean burger was a tad dry, but satisfying (maybe order an extra sauce on the side) and the cauliflower steak had a nice sear and was cooked to a soft texture, but again needed a sauce on the side. If it was served with the chimichurri that comes on the steak frites, I think that would be ideal. I ordered the Billionaire Bacon Burger (a monthly special, so maybe not on the regular menu) and was absolutely thrilled with it. The patty (smash burger style) was perfectly cooked, with a lacy crispy texture that didn't sacrifice any juiciness. Knoxville has a few good smash burgers on offer and I rank this one up there with the best of them, would definitely recommend. As others have noted, the fries here are great. I am usually not a fan of battered fries, but these were delicious. Side portions are generous, too; one of our party ordered only a side salad and a side order of fries and she left satisfied! A year ago I was not impressed with the cocktail I ordered and none of our party got one this time around, so I cannot compare. Their beer list is decent with some local offerings. All in all, I am very pleased with how 71 South has improved and will definitely be coming back. I need another burger! read more

Wanting to try something new for my husband's birthday dinner, I made us reservations for a Friday night. The interior is clean and simple, with the architecture and ceiling installation being the highlights. The vibe I got was casual and family-friendly. Service was stellar -- our waitress was so sweet and everything came out timely. There are several vegetarian options which was a delight. We started with the urban cowboy nachos which were tasty but the portion was smaller than expected and the potato chips didn't hold their crisp (Balter's potato chip nachos are tough to compete with!). For our mains, I had the tofu banh mi and my husband ordered the chargrilled portobello. Both were good! We also tried a cocktail each but they were both super sweet so I'd probably stick with wine next time. We skipped dessert since there weren't a ton of options. Overall, there's still more vegetarian options for me to try and the floats looked super good too, so I'd definitely go back again! read more

I wanted to really like this place. My mom and I went for dinner one night, and I like taking her to places that aren't chain restaurants. The concept is great, and I love repurposing old building for new uses. The interior is modern and open. They've done some things to try to bring down the ceilings and help with noise. Not sure if it worked or not, but they are trying. We were seated by the hostess and waited about 15 minutes and no one came to take our order. I flagged the hostess, and she said "Oh, I forgot to tell the bartender that I sat you." This was not a good start. We finally got our order in, but because the bartender was our server and was busy at the bar, we did not have a check in to see if we needed anything. Our food came out--the food looked great. We both tried a French fry--they were cold. The sandwiches were hot, but the fries were cold. We flagged someone down (our server was busy behind the bar) and got replacements that were hot and tasty. While we were eating, someone was at the bar asking for their table's food bc it had been almost an hour since they had ordered. Bottom line, food was good, cool concept, seems like lots of kinks to work out with service. read more

71 South is the place to go! Built out of an old church building, the restaurant gives a sophisticated feel without a sophisticated price tag. The place was not too busy on a weekday evening, and the staff was friendly. The food...was AMAZING! My wife and I shared our meals, and they were both great. Best quinoa I have ever tasted, the sweet potato fries were the fluffiest I have ever had, and the black bean burger was really savory and moist!
