This is a very attractive dining area, with a variety of seating arrangements. There was a group of folks doing Bible study in the back. I think this would be a good coffee hang out but I cannot recommend the food. Water station in front area was leaking everywhere. I ordered a half-sized oriental chicken salad with no crunchy noodles. Husband ordered the half Italian salad. Both salads were under $10. The Italian salad was acceptable, with sliced meats and shredded cheese over greens with tomatoes and pepperoncini. There was a creamy balsamic dressing that looked liked thousand Island but wasn't. The Oriental chicken salad without the crunchy noodles was literally just lettuce, chicken and Mandarin oranges sprinkled with sliced almonds. The chicken was cold and clearly taken directly from a prefab bag. The salad would have benefited greatly from the addition of just some cucumbers, carrots and red peppers. At least the sweet tangy Oriental dressing was tasty. We bussed our own table and left. Not an experience to repeat, sorry!

The decor brought back all the warm fuzzy feelings of beach visits growing up, complete with table top Pac-Man. I met one of the owners, Andy, who shared a bit about the cafe history. Well this is a Mega Safeway, meaning not only do they have a gas station but also a pharmacy. I noticed the layout is the same as most Safeways. This particular market doesn't share the lot with anyone so parking is a breeze. They have a large selection of fresh fruits and produce, in store bakery, meats, and everything and everything to cover your grocery list. Including a bin for straight to DVD section. I don't understand how they don't have as much fresh seafood being in a coastal town. Most of the seafood is frozen or previously frozen. And brace for it People from Hawaii, NO POKE!!! You see the thing about this particular establishment is it doesn't have a customer bathroom because it's so old. So they allow customers to come in the back door and literally go into their stockroom to access a bathroom that was designed for staff only. Instead of saying something like no public bathroom, they go out of their way to provide a nice, clean bathroom for their customers. Other businesses should take notice. The only reason why I downgraded this to 4 stars is they seem to close really early (before 9???) on Saturdays. Otherwise a great a stop.

For example, I was looking for tzatziki, and no store employee I talked to even knew what it is. That said, you can get almost anything you need there, just not everything you want. The produce department is small, but reasonably well stocked. The butcher counter has almost everything you might seek, but you won't find the normal coolers filled with prepackaged meat and poultry (that's not necessarily bad, just unusual). They have a good selection of many items, and very few of some others. One complaint: It's clear that many of the items are stocked by distributors, not store employees, so different brands of the same item are often not found together -- which makes comparing what's available a pain in the tail -- not cool. That means you can search all over, not find exactly what you're looking for, settle for something less than ideal, only to find the similar item which is what you really wanted later in a different location. Argh!! My experience in Bandon is that I have to go to both McKay's and Ray's in order to get the things I need on any given grocery run -- there's always something that one store doesn't have, that I hope the other does.
