The place is cool but honestly won't go back because how uncomfortable the staff there made my friends and I feel. For being a "gay bar" they don't seem very gay friendly. I'd say transphobic staff. They have a guy standing outside the bathrooms monitoring entry into every bathroom didn't let my trans partner go into the men's restroom. He is male presenting literally only indication is that he doesn't have top surgery so it's weird that guy cared so much. I heard him say something about him not being born a man which is really weird and made everyone uncomfortable. If there's already someone there monitoring the entry to every bathroom and can be sure not more than two people go in at a time, I don't see why it would even matter. I don't understand that policy or why the guy was so pressed about that. I asked him why my partner can't use the bathroom and he puffed his chest and pointed to the door and literally yelled "if you don't like it you can leave, I'll kick you out". I have never written a yelp review in my life, but I'm writing my first to warn y'all that this is the worst bar in Reno. Bouncers kicked a girl out after she assaulted me only to allow her re-entry no less than 5 minutes later, at which point she assaulted me again. Both my case officer and I have asked 5 Star for the footage multiple times so that I can press charges on the girl, but they have given me and my case officer every possible excuse as to why they cannot provide it. It's clear as day that they're giving me the runaround to cover their ass after either a severe lapse in judgment or straight up negligence. Perhaps we went on an off night (Saturday) as the crowd was very light. Was expecting a bigger college crowd due to the university being nearby. The bartender (lumberjack manbun) wasn't friendly and the drinks were "ok." The other bartender that arrived later was better. There is a cover after a certain time; I would say that it is not worth it. However, since it's the only bar in town that caters to us, I would recommend others to visit but to manage your expectations. read more

Eliza was amazing. We went for karaoke, and that is where it went a bit downhill. The business has no way to impact who comes in for karaoke. So, to be clear, the listed karaoke time on the site was 9 pm. We showed up around 8:30 pm and were told the KJ didn't start until 10:30-ish. If it hadn't been for Eliza's wonderful personality and bartending, we would have left. A neat little bar that is LGBT oriented, has plenty of seating and a few gender-neutral bathrooms. They serve all the alcohol that you would expect and the ambience is that of dance club. Or at least the night I was there. I had come in the middle of the week so there wasn't too many people in, but those that were were all doing karaoke, which if you sing you get a coupon for a dollar off your drink. Overall it's a pretty cute nightclub, and the people running it seems super friendly and welcoming. I may have to go back eventually to see what it is like on a busier night. read more

It's been such a struggle for me to write this review and a lot of reflection but I will now. I entered the bar and went straight to the bathroom line. I hadn't had anything to drink in this bar, but I did in others, not gonna lie. I was feeling really nauseous but didn't comprehend this as a sign of my known fainting disorder. I should have, I hadn't fainted in so long though so I didn't suspect this to be the cause, my mistake. I was with a friend who was not aware of my problem and I fainted. My memory is fuzzy. I remember her asking if I'm ok. I fainted twice, the second time landing on the floor. After the second one I heard someone ask if I had been drinking. My friend said yes. According to her he called the bouncers. I felt them grab me and then drop me. There were bruises on my knees the next day, they dropped me so hard. Then they lead me out the back door exposing my breasts in the process. My friend told them we were in line for the bathroom and the bouncer muttered that I can pee in the alleyway. I had gained most of my consciousness back by the time we reached the alley and thank goodness because the way I was manhandled has me honestly believing they would have left my unconscious self on the alley floor. They did insist my friend go with me so there's that I guess. While I waited for my ride the bouncers would pop out telling me to leave already. I will never go back. Clearly people like me who spontaneously faint or any other similar disorder are not welcome. If I could I would post the pictures of my bruises. The amount of what ifs in this scenario are intense. What if I was roofied? What if I my friend was someone lying? What if I had hit my head in some dangerous way? I understand pass out drunks can be annoying but to treat everyone like this as a first response is dangerous and practically inhumane. After my incident there have been other reported issues with bouncers, including full on physical assaults. Hard to say but I may have been lucky. And the fact that I can even think that is disgusting. I can only hope that things have changed since then, but if not anyone who thinks they could possible find themselves in a situation like mine be on alert. The bouncers will not help you and could possibly hurt you like the did me. read more

So the other night I was planning on getting a drink, while in line, I saw a youngish man, get physically thrown out of the building and the security assaulting him, then had a group of people continue the assult, I heard it was because he gotten flipped off, then his female friend was also threatened by being told, if you don't leave your next. I've gone here so many times and I used to love the atmosphere and music. However my experience here was tarnished when I took my friend who just turned 21 to get drinks here. She started drinking a lot. Three AMFs in fifteen to twenty minutes. When she kept trying to order more, me and my friends tried to stop her, only for the bartender, Angel, to just keep making her drinks. We even told Angel that she drank too much but didn't seem like they cared. Really disappointing. That same night a creepy guy tried to dance with our extremely drunk friend and things were going well, until he booked it at the sight of our friend group, which was suspect. It was our first night clubbing in reno and heard a lot of great reviews and friendly atmosphere about this place but unfortunately we were met with the most disappointing outcome. We went around 11:30-12:00. When we walked in, the place was absolutely dead and the music was so low we could hear each other breathing. The people in there didn't really greet us and were kind of rude right off the bat. I handed my cash first but the group of people I was with wanted to leave, so I asked for my money back and was denied even though it was handed 2 seconds prior. No sign or anything that says no refunds btw. The girl at the front then decided to give us the nastiest look and attitude and argued with us for a solid 10 minutes. We left without our money back. They probably needed it more than us. Go to El Jefes instead. People are way nicer there and the music is actually danceable. Horrible place. Literally so fun. The staff is so welcoming and helpful. Drinks are great and fair price and the Drag shows are so much fun. Everyone there seems to be genuinely so kind and open to anyone. This place has been a downtown fixture for many years and has always been a pretty laid back bar. Went here during the zombie crawl and bar was super efficient at getting drinks out and despite the number of people, was still a pretty chill atmosphere. The drinks weren't priced bad either. There is an unusual sort of seating here, where you have the standard bar, but also a sort of bench area across from it. As well as stipper poles that I have never seen used. Yeah, it's pretty divey but I have never had a problem here in the few times I ventured in over the last 20 years even though the service has been eccentric at times. read more

It's a dirty dive of a gay bar, with horrible drinks, somewhat surly rough looking staff and some saucy "art" on the walls. They've recently tried to dress it up a little, adding a stage area with stripper poles. For the longest time 5star was my "safe" place to dance, but the gays have started to grope as well (or maybe they are just clever straight guys that assure you "It's okay! I'm gay!!!" while they try to slip their hands up your skirt and grind on you.) haha. Still, fun times. Friendly diverse people. They have put some money into 5 star recently with the entrance. There is usually a cover of $5 sometimes $10 after ten I believe. You can get there early and not pay a cover though. They usually have drink specials going at different times. Pool in the back and dancing in the front. Two bars and a dj on the weekends. They do karaoke during the week. You can expect them to start getting busy around 11/12 on the weekend. It's a good spot to dance. It's not nice to be able to go to a LGBTQ friendly establishment. It is a smoking establishment. They sell smokes in a vending machine. There are two single ladies rooms and one men's in the back. The line can get long on the weekend for the ladies! Sometimes they bring in drag queens and various performers on the weekends which is fun. Sometimes you'll find male go go dancers on a small stage box getting down, other times they'll be walking around serving penis shots. read more

The 5 Star is my favorite bar in town. Whenever I'm out on the Santa Crawl, Wine Walk, etc, we always seem to end up here. It just a nice relaxed place where everyone can feel comfortable, whether me as straight girl, my bi girlfriends, crossdressing guyfriends, straight boyfriends, or my transgender pals. It's not crowded most of the time, only on Saturday nights or when there's a bar crawl or something going on. Being Reno has so many artist types, they've been spotlighting art in different themes each month, so there's always something new to check out, my fave was the cupcake paintings, but the fetish stuff was pretty cool. There's a front area with a stage, two stripper poles (that get a lot of use some nights), and room for dancing. The area narrows for the bar (there's a cage across from the bar that's fun to dance in) then opens up again in the back where there's a pool table, the bathrooms, and a nice little secondary bar called the backdoor service bar (only open at certain times). It has a nice location too, right along the riverwalk so it's easy to take a stroll along the river then pop in for a drink--or few ;-) The bartenders and security are all awesome. It's super fun to just sit and chat, sipping whatever concoction they've made up. The 5 Star just seems to have it all, a cool place to hang out during the day and a hopping place on the weekend. read more
