Cuckoo's Hawaiian Shave Ice - Spoon resembled a mini-shovel

Cuckoo's Hawaiian Shave Ice

"bubbles through the ice" (Phish)…read more You may have a hard time finding Cuckoo's Hawaiian Shave Ice. It's not a brick and mortar store, its more like a mini three-wheeled food truck parked in the rear lot of "It's Playtime" - an indoor kids' playground and playscape. We saw zero signs directing us to its location -we just kind of knew about it from a Facebook post. Cuckoo's is owned by It's Playtime and is open more or less the same hours they are (roughly from 9-5). Because the cart sometimes goes off premises to an event, it's worth your while to call before you scoot over. Cups of shaved ice are sold in 2 sizes for $4 or $5. There had a ton of flavors including Blue Vanilla, Grape, Lime, Mango, Cherry,Tigers Blood, Pickled Mango, Lemon, Blue Raspberry, Banana, Sour Apple, Blueberry, Cotton Candy, Pina Colada, Cola, Pink Lemonade, Guava Passion Fruit,Li Hing Mango, Strawberry, Passion Orange Guava, Blue Bubblegum, and Cake Batter. You can trick out your shaved ice with a Snow Cap (for an extra creamy sweet texture), or Fairy Dust (glitter), or candies for half a buck or so more. No review of Cuckoo's would be complete without a glowing report on the young lady running the stand. Isabelle was delightfully charming, informative, helpful, and as sweet as the shaved ice she served up. We ordered a snow-capped small banana and a snow-capped small blue vanilla They totaled $10.21. As our temperatures hit the 70's and 80's, why not check out Cuckoos to cool off?

"Blue like the winter snow in the full moon Black like the…read moresilhouettes of the trees Late blooming flowers lie frozen underneath the stars" (Natalie Merchant) Snoballs are the Louisiana cousin of snow cones and shaved ice, The ice is finely shaved to the point of being fluffy as a cloud, so the flavored syrup kind of diffuses into the ice instead of sinking like a rock to the bottom of the cone. Sno 'N Dough sells a slew of carnival or country fair foods, like sweet or savory fried dough, fried Oreos, Fried Cookie Dough, 22 flavors of Snoballs, cotton candy, churros, and popcorn. We chatted with Dylan, their super friendly counterperson who whipped us up an 8-oz banana Snoball ($2.99) and a Marinara Parmesan Fried Dough ($7.99). The banana Snoball was great -light and airy and fluffy as a cloud without the course hunks of ice you sometimes find in a traditional Snow Cone. The Marinara Fried Dough was terrific -we shared some for dinner (it re-heated beautifully) and the dough came out soft and just about perfect. The sauce and cheese were also excellent, and I have to say we really loved it. Dylan told me a funny story about a customer he served a week aqo, A woman was walking by his stand, and she stopped dead in her tracks, cried out "OMG you have Snoballs", and almost started weeping. Turns out she was a Louisiana native and hadn't seen them sold anywhere besides her home state. Needless to say she was thrilled. We were pretty happy with our visit too!

Not only is the food awesome - I ordered a ramen, plain hot dog, and halo-halo shaved ice (addictively good) - but bonus stars to the staff who were sooo sweet! The Hawaiian style shaved ice and home-made ice cream are top notch. The ice cream is rich and delicious, with some unique flavors, and the shaved ice is very fine - fluffy and evenly slushy in texture and sweetness, unlike the inferior versions where you run into bland chips of ice. The toppings are yum too. The ramen noodles are springy, settled in a savory light broth. For a non-prestige grade ramen, I have no complaints. I also want to acknowledge the lovely hospitality. My child was in a tantrum-y mood and went to sulk by himself in a corner. Seeing the pouty little grump in a small fit, the girls at the counter coaxed him over with ice cream and stickers, which he of course eagerly accepted, pleased by the attention and confection, and was soon back to his endearing self. So I really appreciated their extra kindness! This is a fab joint for a quick-casual or just a perfect sweet treat!

We shared the dessert, and it was served almost instantly. That kind of speed is truly appreciated when you have a specific craving, and I left the cafe completely content with my choice. The Ambiance: Smooth and Relaxing The atmosphere here provides a much smoother and more relaxing experience than other high-traffic dessert locations. The cafe has a great flow; while people still come and go, it is never packed for hours. It offers a tranquil setting that allows patrons to enjoy their treats without feeling overwhelmed or rushed. The Service: Quick and Efficient The efficiency of the service was a highlight. Our bingsu was delivered almost instantly, which speaks to the staff's attentiveness and quick preparation. The bingsoo options are all great - they come out large and fluffy with generous fillings. My favorite is the black sesame bingsoo, which has a delicious milk ice base topped with a nutty black sesame drizzle. Refreshingly cool and not too sweet. The medium size is great to share between ~3 people. I also tried the coffee and it was decent. Nice little cafe overall!
