I am blown away at the flavor and quality of this place, some of the best tasting breakfast items I've ever had. The attention to detail for what most people would consider "simple" food was noticed in every bite. The vegetarian torta had me distracted from my cecina con heuvos and vice versa...GO
Got the ceviche, mole, and two different dinner plate tacos. The tacos were my favorite followed by the ceviche. We also ordered chip and salsa which was 3.75. Service was a little slow and they were pretty busy for 1 PM on Sunday. Overall, liked the tacos and would come back for that.
I wanted to share some thoughts about the food at 5 Rabbanitos. First off both the red and green ceviche options are absolutely delicious seriously top notch. However, I've found that it's probably best to pick just one for your meal. They both have such distinct and powerful flavors that if you try to switch between them your palate might get a little confused and you won't fully appreciate either. The hurache with steak is another tasty option, but I have to admit there's something slightly different about the steak itself in that dish. It just doesn't quite have the signature seasoning or quality cut I usually associate with 5 Rabbanitos. Now, let's talk tacos generally, they're spot on. My personal go to and what I highly recommend you try is the goat adobo. It's incredibly flavorful and just fantastic. The steak taco however isn't quite as stellar as the others in my opinion and don't forget the cochinita pibil that's also a really solid choice. Just a heads up about the service it can sometimes be a bit hit or miss, but honestly that's usually just because the place is bustling and super busy.
We're from LA, and this is our daughter's favorite Mexican restaurant near the loop after her four years at SAIC. She was very excited for us to try it out. We arrived around 7:30 on a Friday night and the place was packed. We only had to wait 10-15 minutes, which passed quickly with the live Mariachi music. The food came out pretty quickly considering how busy it was. We got: - Margaritas -- piña mezcal, passion fruit and pepino. They were good but a little small for the price. - Pozole Pipian -- It has a verde base that's very light. Something that makes it unique is chicharrones on top. My daughter prefers pork over the chicken. - Carnitas Huarache -- good flavors but probably my least favorite of the meal. - Asada Torta -- this was my favorite dish of the night. The bread was really light and the meat wasn't tough at all. For dessert we got the churritos and Mexican bread pudding. Both were good but nothing special. All in all a great meal.
Green posole with pork is an absolute must-try!! It is rich, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. I've also had the red chicken posole, and honestly, it holds its own just as well. What really sets the pork posole apart is the chicharrón, that satisfying crunch against the savory broth is chef's kiss. The atmosphere is welcoming, the staff is genuinely helpful, and they'll happily walk you through the menu if it's your first time. Do yourself a favor and come here!
I really don't even want to make this review because I feel like I'm sitting on a goldmine... but FINALLY, we have found a Chicago Mexican restaurant that fulfills every craving. From the queso fundido (we got ours with chicken) to the Mole enchiladas, to the tacos... everything was so good and fresh. Tortillas handmade. Meat is juicy and flavorful. Rice was delicious. I'm so happy we found this place and can't wait to go back!
Solid casual Mexican restaurant. I have now eaten here 4 times, all for lunch. I've had their caldo de res con fideos, milanesa torta, flautas, enmoladas (enchiladas w mole sauce), and now their braised lamb shank. All delicious. Service is a little spotty, only because sometimes it gets pretty packed and I've seen at most 3 servers working. The last time I was here they let a busker in with a guitar singing his heart out. It was already loud and I had to resort to shouting to have a conversation. Luckily he was there for 3 songs and then went on his way. The menu offers a nice selection of standard lunch fare, but if you're ordering a meal with rice and beans be hungry or prepared for leftovers -the portions are generous. The lamb shank was obviously a generous portion better suited for dinner, but I thoroughly enjoyed it for lunch. The tomatillo based sauce paired perfectly with the chilaquiles enfrijolados. Don't pass up the agua frescas. The crowd reflects the neighborhood undergoing gentrification, but luckily the food is still authentic.
My wife and I are often in the Hyde Park area, and we finally decided to stop into 5 Rabanitos for lunch -- and we're glad we did! The menu has a great selection of authentic Mexican dishes, and everything we ordered tasted fresh and flavorful. Even though the restaurant wasn't very crowded when we visited, it did take a little while to be serviced, which makes me think wait times could be longer if it's busy. That said, the staff were friendly and welcoming once we were helped, and the overall experience was enjoyable. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the neighborhood and craving authentic Mexican food!
Five Rabinitos is a stand-out in so many ways. A rare Mexican place with meaningful vegetarian options. But on our visit we were carnivores and went for the pork and the shrimp. The cochinita pibil torta was excellent. Slow roasted Yucatan style pork on a crusty roll with pickled onions. Just about everything you could want. Then there was the shrimp torta. Which was somehow bursting with perfect shrimp flavor. I'm thinking the verde sauce on it must have been made with shrimp stock. This may be my new all time favorite sandwich. Fan-freaking-tastic. And the care in their menu shows with the thoughtful way they choose different rolls for different tortas. You're not going to find that at most places. Plantains appetizer was insanely good. We scarfed it down like wild animals. Seriously, the best plantains I've had in years. Service was so warm and friendly, despite them being absolutely slammed on a Saturday when the Dio de Los Muertos/Halloween festivities in the neighborhood were in full swing. Super close to the Mexican Museum of Art, by the way. Sitting outside is a great option if they're busy and if it's warm enough. If it's busy, you may need to wait a bit for the inside seating.
Came here on National Margarita day and enjoyed a mango margarita with tajin on the rim! The drink wasn't too strong, but absolutely delicious! I also got the taco platter with 1 chicken tinga taco and 2 vegetable tacos. They were so delicious especially with the rice, beans, and guacamole! The salsa on the table was very fresh and delicious! The tomatillo was my favorite! Our waitress was very attentive and kind and even gave my partner recommendations. When we came it wasn't too crowded and very clean! Really loved my meal and can't wait to come back for the patio this summer
Recently came in for brunch and was happy we got a table because there was a wait immediately after. We got the fried plantain as a starter because it's our absolute favorite. For food, I got the barbacoa de chivo (goat) and my partner got the carne en su jugo. Everything was so delicious. I love traditional Mexican food and loved that they had goat barbacoa that tasted so good. My only complaint is that the carne en su jugo is beans with a separately cooked steak instead of the meat being cooked in the bean broth as it traditionally is. It's flavorful, but doesn't taste like carne en su jugo.
Walking past murals and shops on 18th in Pilsen, Chicago, we were drawn into this bright restaurant for a Michelada. They make it quite spicy, with bright lime, and a salty rim, with your beer of choice. We like Pacifico because it's bold enough to carry the spices, it's just a little sweet, and has a rich texture. The best of beer and cocktail in one :-) We loved the vibrant décor, and the staff are welcoming and attentive. The food look and smelled delicious, but we were focused on getting a little buzz for our continuing mural tour.
Came here last week with a group of friends after running the Miche 5 K...and so did almost everyone else who ran the same race! Yeah it was packed! A good sign. If you're looking for a spot in Pilsen for good Mexican home cooking then this is a gem. It has been here as long as I can remember and still has the same charm. I was looking forward to their Mole Enchiladas but unfortunately they were so overwhelmed that day that they were only serving the brunch menu But that didn't disappoint one bit. Instead I went with my other targeted menu item : Chilaquiles Rojos. And I was very well pleased. Yes the quality of ingredients were fresh and I appreciated that especially after running a 5K. I definitely want to go back to try out their other menu items. If they were able to dish out high quality food when it they are overwhelmed after a big race day then I'd love to see what they can do in a normal day.

Not a Chicago native, but had a good time exploring the Pilsen neighborhood as a tourist! This is one of the highest rated places on Google and Yelp and we were quite hungry after walking up and down 18th St. The taco dinner was solid, but not like write home to my mother good. It was easy getting a table at 5pm, but I would probably explore other places if there was a wait. read more
Not too long ago, I asked a good friend for a different Taco Tuesday location, and she told me about 5 Rabanitos. Now, I'm hooked! It's rare that I post reviews with only 1 photo, but I enjoyed my meal so much that I honestly forgot to capture everything. The food and drinks had me that distracted. Pictured here is the Cabrito-al Pastor Quesadilla. Goat meat in an adobo marinade topped with an avocado serrano salsa. The meat was delicious - so juicy and tender. Before the quesadilla, Wahaka Mezcal Margaritas. I definitely recommend it. #ImNotAFoodie #ImJustAGirlWhoLovesFood #YelpEliteSquad read more
What a refreshing change from standard Tex-Mex fare! 5 Rabanitos translates to 5 radishes (most dishes are garnished with a julienned radish). It's family-owned. The surprisingly sophisticated cuisine reflects the culinary traditions of various regions of Mexico. Everything is made in-house and prices are down-to-earth. My Missus and I dined here with several companions; we had a reservation and our lunch was served family style. The guacamole was the most flavorful ever. It was spiked with fresh cilantro and onion. Our other app was fried plantains. Topped with creamy chipotle sauce, candied pecans and queso Anejo, this was sweet/spicy but not incendiary. My Missus, who generally eschews plantains, chewed these. Our entrees were ropa vieja (not listed on the menu) and grilled chicken Rabanitos style. The ropa was prepared Cuban-style. Melt-in-your-mouth tender and juicy, the shredded meat was served with Mexican rice. The chicken was flavored with a sweet/mildly spicy marinade so yummy, even the chicken-hater in our crowd praised the dish. The accompanying mixed veggies was so good, there was none leftover. Dessert was cinnamon bread pudding. Theirs has the consistency of coffee cake, quite unlike the mushy, custardy 'Nawlins version. Service was phenomenal and the welcoming owner made sure everyone was happy. Of course, we're eager to return. read more
Finally made it down to Pilsen and upon entering the restaurant, I knew I was in for some authentic food. We started with some chips and salsa. The chips were under salted and the salsa (roja and verde) was meh. After that came the fried plantains. Anytime I get a chance to eat plantains, I do. These weren't very crispy but so flavorful with a very tasty chipotle mayo on top. They couldn't have been cooked better. For my main, I tried the torta ahogada. This was my first torta and I can definitely say I'm a fan. This very simple sandwich had some very tender pork and some mashed beans. The bread was crisp which was needed for the broth. I chose to get it spicy, but I felt all that spice was in the very first spoonful. Regardless, the tomatoes and chiles played wonderfully together and have the torta some flavor. I really enjoyed this but it didn't wow me almost as if it was missing that final element. Overall, for the quality of food and price, I recommend coming here and giving it a try. read more

I came here for my siblings birthday with two others the other night and the food was absolutely outstanding. If you like goat at all you should definitely order goat. Their caldo de chivo was truly exceptional. The al pastor tacos were also fantastic, but honestly everything I tried was great including the salsas and rice and beans. I'll definitely be back for more. Service was solid and the place had a great energy. Really excellent classic Pilsen vibe. read more

Wow! What an incredible restaurant. I almost don't want to share how good this, just in case it gets even busier. It's a loud and boisterous environment. The service is excellent, fast, attentive, and quite nice. Everything we had, from the plantains to the beef shank, pozole, and desserts were cooked perfectly, seasoned perfectly, plated perfectly, and so fun and colorful. When food is this exuberant, and made with such care and attention to craft, it doesn't get better. This and the prices are reasonable?! I want to come here for every meal. read more
Such a good find in Pilsen! It was packed even on a Monday night. Everything was delicious. We got the chips and salsa to start, and the taco dinner (3 tacos, homemade guacamole, rice and beans) for our mains. For tacos, you can choose from al pastor, barbacoa, carnitas, chorizo, cochinita pibil, roasted veggies, and chicken tinga. Don't think you can go wrong with any of these! Can't wait to come back to try the brunch and more of their margs! read more

I ordered takeout one night from this location not too long ago. The food was okay, but nothing spectacular. We ordered carne asada and chicken tinga tacos. The chicken tinga tacos were flavorless, which was disappointing, but the steak tacos were decent. We also had the chips and salsa, which was okay. Overall, our experience was lackluster. I'd probably only order the steak tacos again. read more

Delicious Mexican cuisine with friendly service. Great selection of Mexican beers & tequilas. The margarita was delicious with glass rim lined with chili salt. Perfect with the seafood ceviche . Great starter to a lovely meal! read more
Right off the bat, spectacular. First time being at 5 Rabanitos and all I could say is that it will not be my last. My fiancé and I recently moved to Pilsen area and this was the first place we tried... so far it's our FAVORITE. I wish I had the opportunity to tell the entire staff thank you because of the overall wonderful experience we had. We had a run down of the menu / drinks & specials going on. We wanted to order everything! Not only was their food great but some of the best cocktails we've ever had. I am going to introduce my entire family to this place soon & I know they will fall in love with it too. Someone that did throw us off was they didn't play music initially and then we spoke about it at our table & the music surprisingly turned on haha Once that happened, the vibes definitely increased. Whether you are in the Pilsen area or not, 5 Rabanitos (Radishes) is a must try! Thank you 5 Rabanitos, I will be back soon. Personal Review: 9.1/10 read more
Let's be honest - we only went here because we saw Melissa McCarthy went, but it was really good! The queso fundido came with tortillas so you kind of had to make little burritos, but it was really good! The Al Pastor and Barbacoa tacos both had a little bit of a kick that I wasn't expecting, but they both tasted pretty good and the rice and beans they came with were good, too. Best thing we had was the carne asada torta, though. It was creamy and the bread was soft and they could've given a little more meat, but it was definitely enough to fill you up! read more

The customer service here was amazing. You are greeted as soon as you walk in. I went on a Friday afternoon before 5pm and this restaurant was busy. I knew this was a great restaurant in the area. I tried their shrimp empanadas with cheese. It's garnished with a little red onion. This was really good very flavorful . I never knew shrimp empanadas existed. For an entree I had the Barbacoa de res. The beef was nicely seasoned. I didn't really care for the fried cheese. It looks nice for presentation but adds nothing to the dish. The garlic potatoes were great. This dish also comes with soft tortillas that are hot. I came here for lunch but the dessert menu was tempting me lol. They had a Mexican bread pudding with strawberry that was amazing. It's very hard to find good bread pudding. Not overly sweet or too soggy. Definitely try it. read more

Vibrant decor, service was sufficient for dinner rush. Drinks were a touch on the sweeter side, but the sangria might have been the hidden boozy gem. The apps were all tasty, the entrees were a bit over seasoned. If you're going for carne asada, I'd recommend the entree over the three taco meal. A little more pricey but better quality meat. read more

The mole is very good here. It was a a very busy day considering it is cinco de maya. Waiter was friendly and tried to accommodate as much as possible. They had a hard time keeping up with so many ppl. Someone was serenading us which made it feel very cinco de maya. Ambiance was great. read more

Wow, 5 Rabanitos has some really spectacular food. My only regret was not having enough room in my stomach to try more of their menu. The plantains were wonderful. My friend had never had a plantain before (a true tragedy) so they were mind-blowing to both a newbie and someone who eats them whenever she can (me). And the taco dinners were amazing -- it was SO much food and everything was super flavorful. We had a lovely time sitting on their patio on a sunny afternoon. I would highly recommend going; I don't live near Pilsen but I would definitely make a special trip to stop by! read more

Yelp you did it again! I was looking for tacos in Pilsen and wanted to try a place I'd never dined at before. Rabanitos did not fail. It's a small space but packed with big flavor and a staff that is warm and welcoming from the time you walk in until the time you walk out the door. Service was good. The margarita was really good and the tacos mannnnnnn the tacos. They were flavorful and tender, didn't have any fat. The pickled veggies were one of my favorites as I'm someone who loves pickled veggies. I can't wait to go back because we'll I want a taco just writing this review. You're welcome in advance guys! Must try! Note: There is another restaurant adjacent to Rabanitos and it's easy to mix up the two. I'm sure there establishment is nice as well but I made the mistake of entering the first restaurant and immediately noticed it didn't look like the pictures I saw on Yelp. read more

I came here with a group of dear friends for dessert and we all loved the tres leches and flan! This place can be packed but it was a perfect spot to hang out late on a Saturday night. My favorite was the flan. It was really well done! The custard had this velvety and silky texture that melts in your mouth. Yet it was also firm enough that held its shape and integrity. Each bite was truly satisfying. I'd come back for their foods next time read more
Went here for a dinner on a weekday, was seated right away. I decided to order the pot roast, and it was absolutely delicious. Succulent and well seasoned, with rice, grilled veggies and, of course, fresh tortillas on the side. As a side note, the entrees have dinner entree prices, which I've found is usually not the case for a Mexican restaurant. So keep that in mind. But I would definitely come back. The ambience is very casual dining, people having drinks with their dinner. Service was great--no complaints here. Parking around the restaurant is metered street parking. I parked a couple blocks away and was able to find some free non-permit parking. read more

It was a weird day when we went. Some lady tripped and fell so all eyes on her. Which is the excuse I'm giving them for ignoring us so long after being seated. Someone forgot us but kept checking in folks right infront of us until I said, hey! We're here too and been waiting. So, after that , they apologized and brought out our food fast! Which I appreciated Because I was starving. We enjoyed the outdoors seating and the weather helped. Food was delicious. I enjoyed the Cochinita Pibil torta and drink. Salsas were good and I ordered extra cebolla because it was too good. My friend had the asada torta and my partner the enchiladas. We were stuffed and happy in the end. read more
My second trip here. Had it the last time we were in Chicago and had to get it again on this trip. Wasn't going to write another review but after what happened I felt like I had to! Saved it for our meal we took the the airport on our way out of town, but while they were open when we went (11am), they were only serving their brunch menu and the taqueria wasn't set to open until noon, my fault for not checking the website! Ended up not mattering because they went back and spoke to the chef who was happy to make the tacos for us! Incredibly nice of them and really made us happy. Oh, and the food was incredible, an absolute must visit in Chicago. read more

I'd come back just for the pulpo y calamari alone!! The serving was very large for the price and there were big perfectly cooked pieces of seafood served with a side of chips. Honestly my fav dish! We also ordered tacos and they were also filled with delicious flavorful meat! My boyfriend got the goat taco and it was so good that he ordered another one. The servers were friendly too. Check them out! read more
