As a visiting Elite to Amsterdam, I couldn't wait to see what foody delights this particular City had to offer. Despite suffering some kind of mystery vomiting bug for most of the trip (I didn't partake of any of the particular pleasures the Dam had to offer, before you start thinking that); on Saturday night I was just about ready to consider eating again.
Now, our trip to 5&33 came as rather a surprise. I was in a group of lovely ladies, two of whom were celebrating big birthdays (Higher than 21, lower than 50 is all your getting) and for our last night, we wanted to do something really special. One of our number had received a text from her other half in the day explaining their neighbor in London owned a restaurant in Amsterdam. Filled with intrigue, we rang up to try and get a table. This was a bit of a rooky error as the restaurant was completely fully booked (a disappointment, but a sign of a good eatery). This is where her "Connections" came in; after a short but sweet conversation with her neighbor a confirmation call had been received advising us of our booking for 8:30pm.
It was with a sense of intrigue we pulled up to a trendy looking venue in a smart looking district just before our allotted time. We knew it was a good choice when we stepped inside. Being greeted high design and pounding music, this was definitely the place for us. After the kind and courteous staff had confirmed our booking, all of our coats were taken and we were taken to our table. Holy Moly! What a place! Enough space for around 150 people to eat, a chilled out lounge area with gorgeous real fire pits, an open kitchen (so you can see your food being prepared) and shining chrome and marble glinting at every turn; you would have to be very jaded not to be impressed.
Once seated, a senior member of wait staff bought us our complimentary bottle of Prosecco (not a standard part of the service, but a gift due to a member of our posse's connections) and we were presented with the menu. Our wonderful waitress (she really was tip top throughout the whole experience) explained that for a standard meal diners would choose up to 3 plates eat. Each dish is larger than Tapas but not large enough on it's own. It was armed with this information that we tentatively discussed our choices.
The atmosphere of the venue is casual and relaxed; with people in jeans nibbling whatever is bought out and on the table at the time. The food is cooked fresh and bought out in stages (so you can enjoy a great conversation whilst picking at the offerings on display). We had a vegetarian in our number, but this wasn't at all a problem as the menu catered for all tastes (including my bad stomach which would only manage a cheeseburger).
Once the important decisions had been made and everyone had a drink in hand, we sat back and relaxed. We were seating near the "art curtain", which is a live interactive piece installation which seemed to change every 5 minutes to a different artwork. I was transfixed by this the entire meal (much to the detriment to our conversation).
Once the food started coming, the evening really hotted up. From the Mushroom salad to the trout ravioli; I had it on good authority that everything was exquisite. My hamburger was cooked to perfection (pink in the middle) and served with skin-on chunky chips. Delish! Once the fizz has run out, a secondary bottle of wine was ordered and conversation and food flowed for a few hours.
It's worth noting that as well as the restaurant, bar, lounge and gallery area; there is a "secret" indoor smoking area which is designed as exquisitely to the rest of the venue with bright orange arm chairs and comfy sofas. The toilets are also pretty funky (as a top tip - the doors are HEAVY) and extremely clean.
Once we had finished our mains (and were totally stuffed), our waitress tried to persuade us to try the Tiramisu. One of my favorites, but I couldn't risk having anything so creamy :(. Even though we protested, she bought us one out (on the house), just to try. Again, I have it on good authority that it was the BEST Tiramisu's that the ladies had tasted.
Without alcohol, our bill for around 10 small plates and a hamburger and fries came to 120 Euros. Not too bad at all! But this wasn't the end of the experience... next... the bar!
I'll keep this brief, but the bar is just as fantastic as the restaurant. With an extensive and inventive cocktail menu (with drinks being priced from 9 - 12 Euros), it was a winner from the get go. Add in a fantastic DJ AND a live Saxophonist playing along to club hits (I kid you not!), and it was the perfect end to our trip. Our visit at 5&33 was an experience I am not likely to forget in a hurry. read more
