New York speakeasy vibes. My favorite bartender is Dutch Bob (yes that's really his name). I always love their concoctions and it's super gezellig to sit at the bar and spectate the drink-making and the dates-in-progress. They even put some tables outsjde during the warmer months.

This review is very personal. Regarding MY type of bars. Didn't like the place. Too posh. Too expensive. More adapted for older people with money than young people who want to enjoy some drinks. The bar is really great, I guess that some people might even love it because it has this very special atmosphere. But it is just not my type of bar at all. I didn't find it very warm. I paid 16 euros for a Bloody Mary, which was indeed very good, but also very expensive. I just think that the target people is maybe not me, I mean people of my age - 26. Cheapest beer is 6€. Cheapest cocktail 16€. Can undertsand why some people might like it. It's a secret bar. You have to ring the bell to enter it. So very mysterious. You might also like the service which is really formal and polite.

Very relaxing atmosphere. They really take good care of customers making sure you have enough water and stuff to nibble on while enjoying the cocktails. I had the 'penicillin' cocktail which tasted nice but a bit to 'medical' so I continued with the daily special, a nice wodka cocktail. We were here on a Saturday night starting a bit before midnight and I wandered why the place was not loaded, cause it is really worth it, but maybe you just gotta know it. Maybe this post helps ;-)

Classy, Personal, Indulging, Welcoming - these are the adjectives I would use for Bar Oldenhof, a brand new addition to the Jordaan area. Much like Door 74, Bar Oldenhof has a personal touch where you ring a doorbell and someone welcomes you. The cocktail menu has also been collaborated upon. It is best to call ahead to reserve a nice sofa for you and your equally wonderful company. The drinks are generous in proportions and very carefully blended together. The owner/bartender duo take extreme pride in serving you well-crafted cocktails with a smile. One is not enough. The interior is well done. Seating is comfortable. Music is low key and has a jazzy vibe to it, making personal and intimate conversations really easy. Combine that with comfortable seating and visual isolation from the outside that would entice you to spend your entire evening here! Not to mention that the location is extremely favorable. Bar Oldenhof also serves fancy cigars that you could smoke within the premises in a special area upstairs. Cigar and whisky - a wonderful combination! It is very rare for ambitious projects like this to thrive in a busy city like Amsterdam, and so it is upon us to cherish this place (named after the owners' last names!) as much as we can so that the city gets to keep this gem forever.

I tried a couple of belgian beers and then something magical happened....the staff began passing around a plate of cheese and sausages (with some delicious mustard) for everyone to nibble on. No, they were not selling it...it was free! I was in shock..this doesn't happen in the bars I go to. The cheese was delicious and the sausages as well but when you dip it into the mustard it kicks it up a notch. They also had wine available (the wife said it was good! Good enough to warm you up that's for sure, as it was FREEZING outside, by our standards.) It seemed like every single person that walked in was greeted with hugs (and three kisses? I love that little touch they put on their greetings. Not one kiss like my Hispanic folks, not two kisses like the French, but THREE kisses, cheek to cheek). This certainly felt like the bar where EVERYONE knows your name!

A fellow traveller kept us company as we dived face first into beer after beer, and before you could say 'silly drunk tourists' we were stumbling out and looking for food. I love Belgian beers, but they're not as common in Amsterdam as one might have hoped for. Stopping by this wonderful bar was exactly what I was craving. This was also the night before King's Day, so it was a bit wild in the city. We were looking for something a little more downtempo, and so this place was perfect. The proprietor was really friendly, as well. I can't speak on the prices, because honestly by the time the bill came round I was more than a bit wasted. And you know what? Some experiences are worth paying a bit for. This is one of them.

The owner gave us a menu and told us to look first because he didn't want us to be surprised by the prices (we looked like we had just wandered in off the street but I actually had planned to go there). The owner was very friendly and kind. He offered to help with the menu which is only in Dutch and German. He also gave us information on the ferry to make sure we didn't miss the last one back to the mainland. I tried "the living cask" whiskey and my husband had a scotch which were both excellent. They have lots of great whiskey and other options on their menu. We ordered two local lamb dishes and shared them. The owner's wife cooked the meal which smelled delicious while cooking. The taste did not disappoint, but I was most impressed with the service. The elements of the dish were presented and served individual with an explanation. Most importantly, everything was VERY tasty. After the meal, we tried to pay by credit card. The restaurant does not accept credit cards and the owner was very apologetic about it. He even told us we could take the check with us and pay later by bank transfer! We were able to pay by cash but I thought that was very funny. The owner then told us he would drive us to the ferry (6 minutes away by car). I told him it wasn't necessary but he insisted. So he personally took us to the ferry and told us about all the other restaurants he has owned on Texel. Overall, it was a unique experience and I would definitely recommend this place!

(The drinks are more complex the later in the menu). I ordered the Awake at Last, and my husband ordered the Ruby Stone. Mine was sweet and coffee flavored and his was more tart and sour cherry flavored. When I tried his drink, I immediately felt nostalgic because it reminded me of umeboshi (pickled plum in Japanese food), so we ended up trading drinks. Both were great for supping.
