poet's delight
Marie-Madeleine G.

Tl;Dr: Make this place your unofficial cocktail home. Okay. So I've been in Europe for a week, and this is my first review for a reason. Aside from my love of drinks, I am also a lover of both ambience and human interaction. And my bartender, Guillermo, made my time here so worth it. This place was already on my list and I'm so glad that I kept to my itinerary because it was everything and more. Late Monday evening is a whole vibe: busy, but not so much that you can't hold a conversation and I loved that. On to drinks: I had two. Poet's Refuge- A complex taste but simple mix of St.Germain, San Cosme Mezcal (Yum), and Cynar. The mezcal was understated and helped bring out the St.Germain. I was really very pleasantly surprised. Dark and Stormy- By Guillermo's recommendation, I got one of my favorites. I was going to switch it up and do a Mariposa, but I let him choose and I'm so glad. The ginger beer he used was AMAZING. What a way to end my night/start my morning. I will be back here next time I'm in Amsterdam and if you're here, make it a point to come out. You won't be disappointed. As always, happy eating and drinking. MarieMG.

This bar has a really cool vibe, great bartenders and nice variety of drinks. it can be difficult to find, we stumbled upon it after a long day of touring the city.....enjoyed a nice Belgium beer and relaxed....

Old fashioneds - there were three on the menu

I'm a big fan. We had a reservation, but didn't need it. Plenty of people just showed up and were seated. I went for the old fashioneds (there are a few on the menu) and really liked them. It's not really a speakeasy, but rather a very nice cocktail bar with a great ambiance. My only complaint was the very slow service later in the night. It wasn't super-busy, but it seemed that everyone around us was getting served but us. Still, I'd recommend this place and would go back there.

Have you seen the movie 'midnight in paris'? (go and see it) It's just like that! You walk in through the timeportal ;-) and suddenly you're in the roaring twenties! The atmosphere, interior, music and the staff everything is completely in style. The great thing is, if you're not seated you cannot order drinks. This guarantees that it's not overcrowded and gives you enough space and time to really enjoy that amazing cocktails. When seated you get water, nuts and olives which are complementary. The menu looks great (design) and features a wide variety of cocktails that I haven't heard about before. Variations on traditional drinks and own creations. The ingredients used are all perfectly balanced, you can really see and taste the passion and love that is being put in your drink. There's on thing though; you are warned! If you like cocktails and the twenties vibe you could be confronted with a rather large bill 'cause "once you're in, there's a big chance you stay there all night". ;-) This place is special and now that I know it, I can't wait to go again for a shot and a cocktail next week! See you there!

"Magical place for time travel" Gypsy Jazz, genever, gracious gentlemen, gorgeous gals, knowledgeable friendly staff, original cocktails, fresh fruit, fragrant herbs, locally sourced, attention to detail, inspired interior, house made syrups, dedication to quality, toasted rosemary, flaming skulls, megalomaniacs, creative energy in abundance. I just can't say enough about this place. Truly a hidden and magical gem of Amsterdam, and easily my favorite bar in all the world.

Good looking bar!

This venue is in my opinion definately the best cocktailbar in Amsterdam! I am already recommending all my friends to go there :) When you enter this place, you will notice that it is very cozy, a big nice lighten up bar with really an awesome and friendly service! After 2 times there, they already treat you as one of there best friends. Downstairs is the bar and few tables where you can sit. Upstairs you can find a cozy lounge area- pretty nice for a date! ;) The cocktailmenu is pretty diverse and they also change their menu once in 1-2 months to surprise you with new spectacular cocktails! The price is per cocktail is around 15 euro's, but definately worth the price! Your chosen cocktail is served on a really nice plate with a glass of water (good service!). Besides that, you will even get free big olives and small snacks. A big TIP: Try the cocktail 'the Walking Dead'. It is served in a big glass (skull mug) with a grapefruit on top where the bartender will spray some flame-able powder on top at your table! It really looked spectacular and it was superb! Also one thing to mention is that you don't need to reserve a table, but recommendable during weekend and because it is a small cocktailbar. Sometimes they also organize pop-up events where they serve food next to the fabulous cocktails! Check their Facebook for more information about that!

I requested vodka, fruity and sweet. I got a Rhubarb Fizz... So good!

What can you say about this place? It's amazing. It's awesome. It's friendly. It's cozy. It's tasty. It's pricey. We walked in about 10 minutes after they opened, which was good because the word has gotten out and you really should have a reservation especially on the weekend. The cocktails changed every couples months or so and was told the winter menu would be popping up in a couple weeks...so we'll have to go back! Don't see something on the menu that you're craving? Just ask for what you want and they can make it. I was told that if you want to tell them that you want to take a journey to (insert place here), they can probably make a cocktail for that. Or just say "I like vodka, sweet, and fruity" and see what they come up with. Give over the power to them and you will be glad you did. Be prepared to drop some cash. They do take cards (thank goodness). This is a specialty place and isn't a place you could go every day after work. Well, of course that is an assumption...maybe you can! We'll be back, but it'll be a couple months! And we hope to take visitors too!

If you like cocktails, this is the place to be! I did miss something on the menu to nibble on. Just nuts and olives are simply not enough for me. I need something with substance. But the cocktails were great, and so was the barman!

Black pepper and sage

Nice bar a bit on a secret spot, but well who invests in finding the better places gets here anyway. On the outside you don't expect it, but insight it looks really like an exclusive cocktail bar. Large fauteuils, eye for detail and never underestimate the importance of the toilet experience. Nice cocktails, not the obvious kind. I had one with pepper and sage. The smell of black pepper before you take a sip was wonderful. Offcourse well accompanied with nicely presented water, nuts and some olives.

Craft cocktails. Pretty presentation!

The bartenders were busy but nice and took care to explain the creative and extensive menu. The second time I came I made a reservation for two online. It's not a big space but it's very popular so it's consistently full. This is a great bar so I can see why it's so popular. Don't miss Flying Dutchmen Cocktails in Amsterdam.

He said water, so I assumed it was it was tinted from the lighting. When I took a sip it was a flavored water. I asked if it was gluten-free and he was very rude in his response. Basically was like um yea it just has spices in it. Spices may not be gluten free and could be of concern for a celiac. I asked him if any drinks were gluten free and he said all but 2. I wasn't confident that the drinks would be made separately from the non- gluten drinks so I opted not to get one. My friend got the bees knees and said it was really tasty. The server did come back and switch my water to regular at the end but he should have been upfront with what he gave to prevent any exposure to peoples allergies.

During my favorite visits, the bartenders explain each drink you order as they serve it and tell you the story. Every drink has a story. Sometimes they are busy or not interested and you don't get the story. I wouldn't have noticed that the drink tastes like a salad, and not in the bad way, had the bartender not told me the story. A couple of times I asked if they have merch for sale and one time they had pins which I bought. The next time I came, they were out of both pins and shirts. Bummer. The decor was very nice as well. I didn't try any food there. Now it comes to the important part of the review. It's all about the cocktails. I got the Beeswax Old Fashioned(17 Euros). It was very good and a nice twist on an old fashioned. My second drink was the Paradiso Manhattan(17 Euros) and it was a tasty cocktail with something extra. It came with a piece of chocolate that was made with mushroom powder. They paired well together. I can't give it five stars for one reason. The drinks were very good, but they were a little weak. I felt very little to nothing after my second drink. I'm not a big drinker and I have a low tolerance for alcohol. The drinks need to be a little stronger. More of a kick to them. I would still recommend Super Lyan to anyone that has the pleasure of visiting Amsterdam on holiday.

We were going on a boat tour that afternoon, to see all the light installations, so we made sure the timing was right to get to Pulitzer's on time! We had a 6:00 reservation, and got there promptly and found the door that we were to enter. The door was locked, but there was a sign that said 'please wait, someone will be with you soon'. Our wait was very short, and someone promptly came, greeted us and took us to our seats at the bar. Because a reservation, I believe is required, (not 200% about that), we were wondering if it would be a bit stuffy. It was not at all, everyone that we spoke to was very friendly, and great service at the bar. There were other couch settings and a few different set ups, but as usual, we love the bar. Our drinks were fabulous and we tried three of their menu items- only have appetizers, but they were very good. In talking to my sister and her husband, after we returned home, who had just been to Amsterdam, I realized that they stayed at the Pulitzer hotel, which we did not know when we were there. They loved the hotel - so I can give a recommendation for that as well. They said all the rooms are different and they really loved their room. I think everyone would really enjoy a stay at the Pulitzer hotel and definitely get a reservation to Pulitzer's bar- you won't be disappointed.

Both were delicious! Meanwhile, we chatted with Iago the bartender, and Lily the manager. We learned more about Amsterdam and why so many people come here from elsewhere in Europe to work. Iago was super fun to talk to. He'd lived in Amsterdam for 7 years and It was only his first week here at NJoy. Tucked on an old…read morecanal in a historic inn, it feels less like a bar and more like a small salon devoted to Dutch drinking culture. The rooms read like a cabinet of curiosities: intimate, storyful, quietly romantic. The team centers Dutch spirits, especially genever, and treats the menu as a narrative rather than a list of brands. Seasonal themes frame the drinks by flavor profile and history, and even the snacks stay in character, with simple Dutch-leaning bites that support what's in the glass instead of competing with it. The craft is serious. Most of the cocktails look disarmingly plain in the glass. No umbrellas, no edible terrariums, no theatrics for their own sake. Then you take a sip and the bouquet opens in layers, and the mid palate carries on a long arc that rewards attention. It is the rare bar where you keep drinking more slowly because the drink keeps revealing itself. The menu is a pleasure to read on its own, the kind you can happily peruse between sips as you decide whether to follow the thread of genever, lean into a vermouth frame, or chase something herbal and saline. Service is warm and informed without hovering, which suits the room's scale and keeps the experience personal. Practicalities shape the vibe in a good way. It is small and seating-only, which preserves the hush. Entry skews first-come, and the crowd trends grown-up and conversation-forward rather than boisterous. Taken together, it adds up to a bar with a clear voice and a point of view: unassuming appearances, rigorous composition, deep roots in Dutch tradition.
