Great Lakes Glass - Shower Door

Great Lakes Glass

Great Lakes Glass installed glass shower doors at our house about a month ago. We had originally…read morecalled another glass company. The other company's service tech came out to our house in his personal vehicle, wore street clothes and used a level to check how square the walls were. Our walls are not square and he said that he was not sure if his company even wanted to do the job at our house. Because there are imperfections in the tile and because the walls are out of square, his solution was to use a 3/4" channel along the bottom and side of the fixed glass and use a 1 1/2" header along the top of the glass. This was not what we were looking for. The Great Lakes Glass technician, Mark, drove a commercial truck, was dressed professionally and from the start was optimistic that their company could compensate for the out of square walls and tile variations. He used a laser level and gave me the exact variations that he said could be compensated for by cutting the glass asymmetric. In addition, he suggested we use 76" high glass rather than the standard 72" glass to give the shower a more upscale look. The installers (Joe and ?) laid down blankets on the floor, did an excellent job and cleaned up after themselves. They used brackets to hold the glass in place instead of channels, ground the glass where there were tile variations and did a beautiful job caulking the edges. Take a look at the attached image of their completed work. It looks great.

I went with this company based on the reviews. Something must have changed in the last 2 years…read more Terribly managed is what I would call it. The employees who did the actual work were good. The office not so much. Forgot to order the window. Ordered the wrong one, twice. Look elsewhere as they are not what they once were.

Window Universe Cleveland - Living Room Before

Window Universe will be my first choice for windows. It turns out that they did not install the window that was broke, but they fixed it anyway.

ll start off with this. No gimmicks. FOREVER WARRANTEE. (yea…read morereally) No "Time share" sales tactics. No telling me "My wife had to be there for the initial visit" (That is also a timeshare selling tactic) No Special "back to school pricing" gimmicks. No buy one get one free. No LYING and saying the competition makes inferior windows (Then when you see what Window universe does it is actually better than the other company) I got 18 quotes for work on my house 5 window quotes. so I am tired and cranky. I didnt call Window Universe intially. (my mistake) I had one company (Who I wont review) that was all the way up to getting a downpayment from me. They seemed good initially but I had to fire them when they didnt show up (it was a fourth offence) Too bad. Well I called Window Universe they came out fast. The quoting process was fast. The person (lance) who came out was very personable. Now I didnt realize this but their quote was 1500 less than the other guy I fired. Also Lance is a dialed in person. He called Provia on my door and he told me that the door I was getting was not compatible so we had to switch. The previous guy was going to give me that door with the side lights. (Was it going to even work??) yeah so there was that. The appointment took minutes. We also talked about basement glass block windows. Their prices. Right on the sheet AND they were really good about 1/2 what I expected to pay. So I am going to do that too before the winter. Anyhow when all was said and done Window Universe was less than the guy I almost used and Lance double checked he got the proper sized windows and sidelights. Great experience and I still have 3+ weeks before the windows show up. Ill come back and add some pictures after it is done. I know it is going to be great.

I was told it would be up to 8-12 weeks until receiving the products so I told them I'd have to return to Ohio for it to just give me a couple of weeks notice. I ended up getting a call that they wanted to install the next day after only 3-4 weeks! That was fast! But I wasn't able to get back there that quickly and had to make arrangements for someone else to let them in. My not getting to be there I have no idea how it looks or works. According to my tenant, the sliding door wasn't shutting properly or locking and the paint needs another coat or 2. I called Empire and they went out at my tenants convenience and fixed the door/lock. Awesome service! Great pricing. And we will see how the quality holds up after a winter and a summer in Ohio. I have a great feeling that Empire being a family business will only be a phone call away if needed and I love supporting those businesses! These are the only pics I have so far. I just noticed there's no screen in pics so I'll have to make sure there is, but something tells me empire has done it right. I just didn't get the final pics. I will do business with them again on other condos I have and I will recommend them!!!!

I also understand that I am going to have to talk to vendors that are trying to make money off me and I am going to have to listen to their spiel and haggle with them. And then deal with several other people along the way before the job actually gets completed. After my experience with Window Nation, I don't think I can honestly recommend that anyone else purchase windows from them unless they are prepared to deal with all the hassle up until you get the actual windows. Knock on the door from an ill prepared salesman who said they were in the area that day. Had to haggle about the price and were offered coupon after coupon (price without any of the coupons was astronomical). We were offered a cruise we had to pay for (not a free cruise, only a voucher for a company that offers cruises to people who make large home improvement purchases). Huge lack of communication from the company until the actual day of the install (we had to call them several times about the cruise voucher, about a receipt, about scheduling; things were really only taken care of once the owner of the company got involved and handled things). We were given no direction to move furniture or window treatments prior to installation. Day of install was great, aside from my husband having to move all the furniture out of the way and take all the window treatments down because the installers are not allowed to do any of that, and aren't even allowed to help. Installers were professional and efficient, covered all our stuff with plastic, and didn't leave a mess behind when they left. Seriously, other than the furniture being out of place and the new windows, I would have never known they were there when I got home. So if you choose to go with this company, beware of the process prior to actually getting the windows. The installers are great, the windows are great, but the company itself and the way they handle things can give you a big headache.

Three people came out to do measurements. None of these people told us there would be any problems installing the window. This was for one window that was going to be installed in one day. It took two months and I had to finish the work myself. Apparently ours was the first house that they had ever done a window replacement for that had vinyl siding. They took five weeks to finish the outside of the house because they needed to order replacement parts that were damaged during removal. They needed eight weeks to get replacement woodwork for the inside because (you guessed it) they damaged it during removal. If I hadn't had to consistently call to find out the status of the job, we'd probably still be waiting to get it finished. COMPLETE AMATEUR HOUR. Do your self a favor and find someone that can do the job right.
