Most important part of this review: the Amish Half Chicken is the best BBQ chicken I've ever had.
"Oh great... Another BBQ place coming to town..." That's exactly what I thought when I heard 317 BBQ was moving in to 6320 Guilford Ave in Broad Ripple, space that was previously occupied by the ill-fated BurgerFuel.
My wife, two children and I stopped in before our trip to see Winterlights at Newfields. The place was completely dead, which wasn't necessarily bad since we have two kids under age six but also made me wonder, "why aren't there more people here?" That question quickly faded when we took our first few bites.
The inside was fairly bland but the smell of smoked meat quickly made up for any interior decor shortcomings. I personally appreciate the approach. You're there for the food, not the decorations.
At the counter we were provided a simple one-page menu that didn't overwhelm. They also don't have a kids menu but every item came with generous portions to share among us. Our order included: half pound of pulled pork with classic BBQ and vinegar sauce, half local Amish chicken with classic BBQ and vinegar sauce, smoked sausage, buttermilk biscuits, cornbread, and two white cheddar mac & cheese. They currently do not have a license to sell adult beverages, so we kept it simple with water and sodas. All orders are taken at the counter, which was a bit of a challenge with the loud music (more on that later) and COVID-19 compliant masks to muffle our voices.
Before our order arrived, I was greeted by one of the owners who gave me a brief tour of the additional space in the back. I was shocked at how much real estate they have to work with. There is definitely more to the facility than meets the eye when viewed from Guilford Ave. During the walk through he shared their vision for how they plan to activate the space in the future. I won't share all of the details but I'm excited to see how it turns out.
When I returned to our table I started paying attention to the loud music I found distracting while ordering. Pearl Jam, Everclear, 311, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc., an excellent assortment of my favorite 90's rock/alternative groups. The orders arrived on paper lined metal trays with paper food trays and disposable utensils (as they should at a BBQ spot). I worked my way around the table sampling each item before digging in to my main event: the half Amish chicken. Everything was delicious. The only gripe my wife and I had was that the pulled pork could have been a little warmer. However, that didn't distract us from how tasty it was. The kids woofed down the sausage and mac & cheese without complaints. The sauces were straightforward and didn't overpower the meats. I probably won't order the vinegar sauce again but it wasn't bad by any means. For me, the star of the show was the half Amish chicken. WOW! I can honestly say I've never had a better barbecued chicken. Every bite was extremely tender and had the right amount of smoke. The skin was perfectly seasoned and didn't suffer from the over-salting plague that typically accompanies BBQ chicken. Bravo!
317 BBQ is a great addition to Broad Ripple. We will return. read more
