This was my third visit to 2nd & Charles, and it continues to deliver. Stopped in for their Penny-A-Page event and somehow walked out with 7 books for under $35. Yes, we did it in two transactions; no judgement Their selection is seriously impressive; everything from kids' books to adult reads, so it's easy to get lost browsing. I've also picked up CDs here as gifts, and the condition has always been pristine. If you're into collectibles, they have a huge selection of Funko Pops, and their video game section is a solid find for collectors too. If you love a good bargain, this place is a must. Many of the staff here were attentive and provided impeccable service during the holiday shopping bonanza that bestowed the 2025 season. The store was well organized amidst the chaos. There was a huge selection of books, music, Funko Pops, and tons of other items. The prices were reasonable, though, some of the plushies were ridiculously priced. (e.g., the little stuffed insect plague doctor has been $35 for a few years now ). I'm a little biased when it comes to book stores - especially used book stores - that being said. I love it here. They have new AND used books that can go up to like 80% off depending on the book. They have movies, games, books, merch, music, so many things. Their staff is quite spread out but they are really helpful. Being a previous employee myself I can say the staff are actually super helpful. They should know almost exactly where something is depending if we have it or not. They have great prices for the stuff that they have - you also can sell your stuff here too and get either cash or store credit ! Customer service is "hit and miss ", especially in the seller/buyer section. It used to be a great place to find a good book or two at a great price. Now many are the same price as at Barnes and Noble. A family member purchased a manga book sometime ago and when they removed the protective plastic covering they discovered they paid more than what the original price was. read more

The Mecca for all things pop culture and "nerdy." I loved checking this place out, preteen me would've been obsessed with this store. I used love Fye growing up and this felt like that, but 10x bigger. They had incredibly priced books. It's an upgrade from your basic bookstore (note: I love any type of bookstore, this one was just extra cool). There was a big selection of CDs and vinyl too. They had a whole section dedicated to Funko Pop figurines, a section for anime, one for board games, and another for video games. They had a good mix between used items and new items. Although I found their board game selection to be a bit pricey, they still had a bunch of great games. This is a great store to get lost in. This store is an absolute scam. They have "mystery boxes" that advertises as BLU RAYS AND DVDS. 30$ open it and it is ALL dvds no blu rays. It's literally a robbery right in your face. Fantastic and huge bookstore! Great place if you're looking to browse many titles, and see some cool deals. I loved the 4 for $10 table in the back, and picked up a couple big authors (Carl Hiassen, recommend to all my satire and mystery lovers), as well as some fun new titles. The DVDs were great as well. I did notice that used books of high quality were priced at the same level as new copies (used and largely undamaged were just priced at sticker), so be sure to thoroughly check something before you buy. I could get lost in this store! I literally said "Wow" when I walked in and saw the massive collection of books, DVDs, vinyl, CDs, games, toys and comics. They even sell musicals instruments! Initially I called the shop because I was looking for a particular DVD. The clerk who answered, Madeline, was extremely helpful. She looked up the title and told me she'd have it at the register on hold for me! Such service! I was blown away! My plan of running in, paying for the movie and making a quick exit was thwarted when I saw the mega selection they carried! I meandered thru the labyrinth of aisles, amazingly organized, pristinely stocked, and meticulously displayed. I took notes on my phone of the titles I was coming back to buy! I love this bookstore. It's a great way to get what you want at a great price AND take items you no longer want and sell them. Everything I've gotten here has been new or in very good condition. My only problem would be that sometimes it's difficult to find what you want since items aren't always shelved in the order you'd expect. Alphabetizing could be better. read more

Overall, it's a decent place for selling stuff, buying used, and buying new. However... Today was the second time that I've bought an item in shrink-wrap, sold as a new item, but opened it to find the pieces already assembled, semi-painted, etc. They are selling me used items as though new, and when I contact them about it they will only offer a refund. I want the item, I just don't think I should be paying the full price, but they don't do that; you pay full for used, or nothing at all. read more

My mom somehow stumbled across this secondhand bookshop during her visit to Richmond last month (I think Yelp assisted, actually). I had never heard of it and honestly just assumed she was referencing a small boutique shop whenever she'd mention how much she loved her book-browsing time....Until I experienced 2nd & Charles for myself last weekend, that is. Here's how she explained what happened: She left me to go check her favorite genre. A bit later, she came back to check on me and discovered a "kid in a candy store" holding a massive stack of books and fully entralled by the selection. Here's how I'd explain what happened: ABSOLUTE BLISS. All the fiction titles were sorted alphabetically so I walked through scooping up affordable, well-taken care of books by my favorite authors. Eventually my mom located me and brought over a little shopping cart. I filled it up and spent $70 without ever spending more than $5 on an individual book. Almost all of the books I selected were already on my radar as titles I've been wanting to check out. Since the beginning of January, I've read over 50 books and keep a fairly active GoodReads account (and NetGalley, and Prime Reading). I find reading so relaxing and engaging -- so much better than watching TV. It feels productive and wonderful to drown in a good book. I find it so sad when people say they don't have any time or focus to open a book. Talk about missing out on one of life's best pastimes! I've read and heard complaints about the buy-back program here. I personally wouldn't even attempt. My apartment building has a book swap downstairs, so I'll probably either put books there as I finish them or donate to a local library or good cause. One part of reading that I love is being able to spread stories even farther, and I think the already affordable prices here make it easy to pay it forward. Keep in mind: They're green and do not give away bags. You'll need to buy one if you don't BYO. (Or in my case, two. Worth it.) read more

I passed by this location one day and asked my daughters if they knew what it was. "Oh yea, that's where you can buy used books and DVDs and stuff". I checked it out one day and was delighted to see a big selection of DVDs and books. They also have a small video games selection. In front of the store, they had a bin of free books. I found one or two from there to add to my collection. The checkout process had a little hickup... their POS didn't accept credit cards. Must have been a fluke. While they rebooted, I paid with cash and was on my way. Big store. Lots of selection. I could see myself spending an hour going through their DVD and music selection... so instead I've been compiling a list of "wants" so I can go pick them up on my next visit. I wish there was a way to check their stock online and even make a purchase online so all I'd have to do is swing by and pick up my order. That would be a big time saver. read more

After decluttering my house and finding a WHOOOLLLLLEEEE bunch of books and DVDs that I had stored from many (MANY) years ago...I had a friend tell me about this location where they'll buy your "old" stuff. I had a HUGE bag of old DVD's (I obviously kept the classics) and books that I've detached form and decided to give to another home. I dropped them off on a Sunday when they first opened up (at 11:30 AM) and it took about an hour to an hour and a half for them to get done. Tara is right on the money about the cash received will be a lot less than the store credit. As much as I wanted to take the store credit...I'm just decluttering my crazy home for this second kiddo and I don't need a temptation to buy any additional stuff to add into the home. Plenty of park spots, so many awesome books, and def a place to get lost in. I'm so glad that they have this location in RVA because I'm still finding some random books and DVD's as I clean up each room of my house haha. Honestly I'm kinda pissed off. I took 6 books in there, all together they were about 70 ish dollars and I waited maybe an hour for a call back. They offered me 2.10 in cash, that's so fucking stupid ?? I kinda expected 2 dollars each book, but they are in great condition and was wanting to make a little extra money for galaxy con tomorrow. I am so glad to have this store in Richmond. It is owned by Books A Million, but they added several twists. 1) They have a normal BAM Store 2) They added a lot of orange decor 3) They sell used books and will buy your used Books, DVDs, Vinyl Records, and Video Games. 4) They added a music and DVD section. 5) There is no Joe Muggs cafe. Things I Love: 1) They have used books at awesome prices! 2) They have a Lego table where you can buy legos by the ounce! 3) Their selection of everything is pretty awesome. 4) Teachers get 20% off with ID Things I Don't love 1) They offer prices that are really low on the used books and our wait was an hour and a half to realize it. 2) They still realize that they aren't making money just in books and it is filled with reading tchotchkes and Video games. 3) They have no coffee 4) it is still a bit understaffed and they need more organization time. How can anyone not love this place? Since they first opened, this is always on my list of 'must go back to'. It's an amazing place if you love books. Plenty of bargain books located outside the store as well as inside. They also sell CDs, DVDs, collectors items, Funko Pop figures and the like, comic books, first editions, signed books, new age related items etc. There's something for everyone. What a gem! I have no idea how I spent 2 years in the area without having heard of this place!! They are LOADED with books, comics, dvds, cds, and games. I can't think of any other company with such a wide selection of a variety of items. You can also trade in used items in return for cash or store credit. I'd definitely recommend credit as you will get more than if you choose cash, and also because you're guaranteed to find something while you're there you'll want! I cannot recommend them enough. DO NOT expect any remotely reasonable offer for your resale items, you won't get even 10% of their value, and the store will then mark them up to 2 or 3 times their actual cost. I'm no novice, I research what my stuff is worth, and they want to flat rob you, even for store credit. Prices on even the most common used vinyl, most in beat condition, are insanely high. They're still trying to hawk copies of Phil Collins "Face Value" for $20. Steve Miller-The Joker, anyone? That's what you're gonna be wading through. Of course if you do find anything above yard sale quality it's priced like it's made of gold..was stunned to find 2 albums by the Chats...more stunned to see them priced $70 each! I didn't realize 2nd and Charles existed until being in Richmond for like a year, and I was definitely missing out. Where to even start, 2nd and Charles has so much and it's amazing. I love their record section and all the selection it offers, same way with their CD section. I've found some great records there, and it's so fun to search through them. I also love all the used games to choose from, my roommate and I have went and bought a bunch of cheap games and spent an afternoon playing them all, I highly recommend this. It's a great pastime. One of my absolute favorite parts is checking through the cases they have near the exchange area, I've found a good amount of rare gems there. Like this Alice In Chains box set called The Music Bank, and a limited edition pressing of Stone Temple Pilot's Purple. They also do exchanges and I've brought in many old games, gotten store credit for them, and bought new games. Their trade value seems pretty fair to me, too. 2nd and Charles is an amazing place for really anyone, from records to CDs, from comics to games, it's a great spot to find some entertainment and buy gifts for yourself or others. read more

One of the coolest places around in Richmond, they offer computer games, legos, cds and records, dvds/blue rey and books with audio book options as well. I have found many treasures here from a cd from a band of my 2nd home town of Seattle, hard to find computer games from my past which were under 8 dollars each, and loads of books of all to start up my reading list. This place is a 2nd hand trade in store, so whatever comes in it's there until you pick it up; this is a good place to get deals for items you are looking for from the good old days which could be from the 70s all the way up to the mid 2000s. This place is absolutely spectacular! Imagine if a Barnes and Noble, Go calendar!, and Game Stop combined to make one store and you get 2nd and Charles! You can buy/sell/trade everything from CDs to books to DVDs to video games (and accessories) for every console from super Nintendo to Xbox one to the Nintendo 3DS. This place replaces the old Babies R Us that close down a couple of years ago in the Tuckernuck Square shopping center and it is huge! Everything here is very organized, especially the Dvd/Blu-ray section that is organized by genre AND alphabetically- whoa. When you first enter the store you're encountered with multiple displays of various types of toys and accessories like legos, action figures, super hero and Harry Potter toys. They have a huge selection of used games for purchase, probably 2-3 times the selection of any local game stop; although I am not sure if their prices are competitive versus online or other consignment stores. You can also show your ID to the employee and you can play games on either two of their flat screen TVs! You can seriously spend the entire day here but I am not sure what the squatting policy is like.. haha. They also sell vinyls, guitars and even have a small open box/clearance section that has a lot of random items like screen protectors, cases and even drones! If you're bored, come here If you want to play games, come here If you want to walk around and just see what they have to offer, come here. Just come and see what the excitement is all about. SN: they have a free bin outside the store that has a lot of random stuff you can take home. Great selection of DVDs and Games, however: Employees here communicate store promotions very poorly. When you make a purchase here, they will ask you what magazines you want (not if you want any, they just ask which ones you want), when I asked what they were talking about they mention that I would get a free issue of the magazines chosen, so I picked a few. They did not indicate that they were subscribing me to this service and I've found that I've been getting charged for these magazines since my visit. Another time I shopped here around Christmas and they were doing a toy donation promotion. After making my purchase, the employee asked me which toy I'd like to donate (again, did not ask if I'd like to donate a toy, just asked which one I'd like to donate), which led me to believe it was because I'd spent X amount of money (I'd just made a $50 purchase), but then attempted to charge me for the toy that was being donated. They need to stop assuming that I automatically want to participate in whatever promotion they have going on and start asking me first. I was pleasantly surprised by this gem. Nostalgia and knick knack city---who doesn't love knick knacks? Do I need this glow in the dark bath bomb? Yes. I need two. They have a great selection of used books, movies, records, comics, as well as new books and random treasures. The chairs are uber cozy and I dig the gamer setup mid store. As a nerd deluxe, this store feeds my dreams. If only it was bigger and had more books. But then Heaven would be a place on Earth ;) I have not sold them a book so I cannot speak on that experience as I don't tend to sell books, but instead collect and hoard them like....normal people do...bc it's definitely normal. read more

This store is way larger than I thought it would be, and it had so many sections of new and used items. We spent 2 hours looking at everything and searching for the next good read. We left with 10 books and several Bob Ross items, lol! This place is wonderful lots of seating and many books that are very affordable!! I purchase books often for my little readers, and several of the books that paid 15.00 for online were here for 3.00!!! Wednesday is buy a clearance book and get one free!!! A wonderful gem of secondhand books supplemented with magazines, comics, video games, DVDs, CDs, instruments, and assorted random things such as toys, collector's items, card and board games, notebooks, posters, Harry Potter-themed items, and various knickknacks. It's a dangerous place to be if you love affordable books. They also have BOGO Wednesdays for clearance books! The buyback system is simple, you put whatever you have into a white bin and they give you an estimated wait time. I brought in 2 tote bags full of classics and YA and children's books, and about ten minutes before the estimated wait time of 45 minutes, I received a text saying that my buyback was done. They offered me $10.50 cash or $19.25 store credit, which was a pretty decent deal considering the random books I'd brought in. I went with the cash since I go to school out of state, it's still way more than I could've made selling the books online. I still need to clean out my room, so I'll be back! read more

My coworkers were raving about this store and how awesome it is and that I have to go there! So I went and have been there a couple of times. I am a teacher and always looking for cool books or books I can introduce my students to. I went in both time with an open mind and trying to find stuff for my Harry Potter themed classroom and books for my students. Almost everything I looked at was brand new and full priced. The Harry Potter stuff I understand so that didn't bother me. But all the books I found that would fit my classroom or that I could purchase for my students were all over 9 dollars, and many around 12 or 15. Also they are pushing you to get magazine "trials" that I looked up online that many people are having trouble canceling and are upset about these offers. The store was clean, the people working here are friendly, and they do have discounts for teachers, which is always appreciated, but you have to have your ID everytime which is annoying and I couldnt find anything worth buying. Overall you should check it out and hopefully You have better lucky than I did, but I do not see myself going back. read more

Absolutely love this place, friendly employees that are knowledgeable. Almost every time I come in here, there is great interaction with a different employee. I'm a big vinyl records and Funko pop collector, and this establishment has a superb selection of both. One of the only places I can find a chase Funko pop at, where the employees leave them for customers rather than hoard them. They have an awesome used books and comics section, where you have the ability to find almost anything you might be looking for at a fraction of the price you'd pay for a brand new book. I've probably gotten a few grand in items here just myself and continue to shop here weekly. I went to the store for the 1st time because I was looking for a specific book that I wanted. It was hard for me to find the book in the aisle, so I asked the cashier if someone could help me, she was very nice and she also checked on the computer and confirmed they have multiple copies available in store. Another employee came to me and asked multiple times if I have checked in the romance/ fiction sections and I said: "Yes, but I can't find the author." So I followed her and she didn't even check for 1min and then told me to return in a week because they could not find the book. Rude and very insufficient costumer service.
