This store is in the area of the Town Center. It's always clean with many employees to answer any questions. 2nd & Charles is mostly a used book store but it is also a lot more. The books here are mostly in brand new condition and sold at a heavily discounted price. Books from travel to cook books to novels to almost anything you can think of are available. If you have collectors to buy for they have a huge collection of Funko Pops to choose from. They also have old and new comic books with many used comic books only selling for a dollar or two each. A few packs of unopened sports card packs are for sale and don't leave the store without a pack of Jelly Bellies which are usually kept by the registers. On this visit they also had many holiday gift ideas on a few of the displays. Fun place to look at stuff and buy things you need or things you didn't know you need. What's not to love about a bookstore, especially one that is so much more. You can get games, tchotchkes, comic books, records, etc. It's a huge place, and one of the people that work there told me they're working hard on organizing so you can find things easier. They do sell used books, and the kids section isn't well-organized, so if you're looking for something specific, it may be a tad difficult to find, but still fun to peruse the selections. Pretty fun book store to explore for a bit on a day off work. They have a large section with comics and manga, and (unlike most stores now) they still sell dvds, blu rays and cds. They also have toys and stuff like you would expect from other chain book stores like Barns&Noble and such. There is a music section but i can't speak to the quality of the instruments. I've never seen anyone really shopping in that area of the store before. I don't think they are worth selling your used books to if you are looking to make a profit, you're better off just donating them to a library or thrift store. read more

DO NOT GO HERE! OR SELL HERE! Literally had the worst experience trying to sell some books here. The day I dropped off the girl told me I'd be a little over an hour so I went across the street to Costco came back waited in the parking lot for an entire hour because I haven't gotten my text message yet, finally went in just a check and she was just twiddling her hair and talking to her boyfriend at the far counter instead of doing my order. So I said, "is there anyway that you will be able to finish today, I don't live very close to here." She said not likely I'll have to come back tomorrow. Mind you it was only 6 PM. So I said, OK that's fine. I called the following day just to make sure my order was ready because again I never got a text message when it was, the girl on the phone told me it was and I can come pick it up. I get there 30 minutes later, and their systems had just shut down and so they could no longer do buy backs. That was pretty frustrating, but I understand because it's out of control. However, their attitudes were horrendous. There was a gentleman and a young girl working and the attitude they had even though they were the ones who could no longer service me, although I had just called and they told me to come and pick it up, was outrageous. But again the issue with computers was out of their hands, their attitudes, however, were definitely their own responsibility. In fact, there was an older woman they're looking for Nicholas Sparks books, and again the girl behind the counter, had such a bad attitude with her. She was unwilling to help her. She just pointed in an ambiguous direction and said "they're over there." She was so rude to this older woman! Anyway, I go home and decide to try again the next day. This time I go, and they lowball me pretty bad, which was expected. But again a new group of girls was working and the attitudes were horrendous. They forgot to include one of my items in the payout price they offered, and when I asked if they could check on it now before I leave, they said no that I have five orders in front of me. Which is crazy because this is day three since I dropped off, so wouldn't my order technically be in the front of the line? And they said that they forgot that item because they almost miss, placed it because it wasn't with the rest of my things. And then when I got my stuff back because I decided not to sell because of all of the horrible experiences thus far and for the lowball offer, they lost one of my items. When I said OK, well you made me give my thumb print and fill out a Jacksonville police report to come in yet you lose my item and you're not responsible for that? And she said "exactly." so if you bring in your stuff and they lose it, it is on you. When you first get there and you have to sign in, you are signing away all of your stuff. There is a very small sentence at the end of that sheet where you sign in that says "we are not responsible for lost or stolen items" which is just insane because they are the ones who lost it! I've attached a picture of the form below. Trust me for the penny's they offer you, it is not even worth your time bringing it in. This has literally been the worst experience I've ever had at a Store in my entire life. I 100% will not be back. read more

I visit this massive store primarily looking for old role playing games, comic books and science fiction. The RPG section has dwindled so much there isn't much point to coming here for that, but I still find interesting things in the boxes of back issue comics and the aisles of science fiction dating back to the 1960s and 1970s. Prices are reasonable unless you get something ultra rare. The clerks are nice but have to upsell customers on magazine subscriptions, which is annoying because this isn't 1985. Is anybody reading print magazines enough to spring for a subscription at a cash register? read more

We came all the way over to this side of town on errands and this was on the top of our list. I had seen another Yelper's pictures and was intrigued. What was this place? Well, the best way I can describe it is that it is a combination book/dvd/cd and pop culture store with a mix of new and used items. Many of the used items I saw could have passed for new and some of the older things appeared to be older overstock. The store was quite large and appeared at first to be a bit disorderly, but after walking around a bit, I realized there was a method to all the madness. Most of the pop culture items were clustered into like groups (Star Wars, Harry Potter, etc.), books, movies, cds, etc. There were even sections for what I had thought were more fringe items, but I guess not? In other words, if you liked something you didn't think was popular, you still might want to come here and check it out - they might have a section for it. This definitely is a place for hard-to-shop for kids and friends, and they had tons of stocking stuffers for the upcoming holidays. I couldn't really tell who worked there, but they did yell hello and good bye. LOL One weird complaint - the bathrooms are located in the far left hand corner and you have to cut through the children's section to get to it. If you're doing any spring cleaning, this is your place to buy and sell books, DVDs & Blu-Ray, CDs, video games, game systems & accessories, comics, iPads, iPods, eReaders, vinyl records and audio books. Drop off your items at the buy back counter. You're given an estimated wait time and they will email/text you when your offer is ready. They factor in product condition, current inventory and demand when evaluating your items. You can choose between cash or a higher-value store credit (which BTW apparently doesn't expire!) Anyway, you can browse around while you wait. There's everything here stationery, gifts, video games, even a guitar wall. If you're a Harry Potter fan, check out the section toward the back. We stumbled upon a $2 kids' clearance section. I was pleasantly surprised to see high customer ratings when I looked up the reviews on the these books - hey, I had to check if they were on the clearance rack because they were duds! To my delight, my kiddo discovered a new book series and is 200 pages into it in just 2 days - say what? Did I mention they were $2 hardcovers books?! I call that a win. I have never seen such a clean and organized used bookstore. It's amazing! The hubby and I make a point to pop in here whenever we are at the Town Centre. They have a very nice selection of books in really good condition for great prices. They also have racks and bins full of books on sale. My husband often finds .50 cent paperbacks in these bins. I'm big into British history and have found several on the subject here which I purchased. In addition to all the books, they have a lot of pop culture new items like albums, totes, stuffed animals, Funko Pops, etc. Of course you can also bring your own books in for either cash or store credit. I'm just reviewing the music section of 2nd & Charles, as I can't speak to the books as my focus was just on the CD's and records. This store, by far was the worst organized I've seen in years. While this may not be the primary business, they dedicate a large amount of floor space to a product they give very little attention to maximizing properly. I spent about 30 minutes organizing a few areas. Not that I think it will make a difference, but my own gremlins needed some satisfaction. I actually wound up helping another customer sift through some LP's to find some titles. It's shame, because they have a decent selection of used titles and some new stock I've not seen elsewhere. I feel like this is every nerds sanctuary- books, well yes- but so much more! Vinyl, comics, games, video games, a huge childrens section and teen section and the novelty toys.... They have the wall-o-guitars- seriously cool. They also have the awful but cool novelty t-shirts, and socks, and coffee mugs. I can go on and on, because this store has little easter egg surprises around every corner! Wednesdays are bogo on clearance and game night! They even have 50 cent paperbacks and a FREE table. They have discount books out front and even have a free bin for items that don't quite make the cut of trying to sell. You could easily spend over an hour checking this place out and the prices are pretty reasonable. I have loved 2nd & Charles for years. I come here all the time with my fellow bookish friends to see if we can get a deal on some great books. I'm giving them 4 stars because their trade in value is not very good. I brought in two totes full of best seller hardcover books, a brand new vinyl record, and a Harry Potter Collector's Edition book and only got $17 for the like 25-30 books I brought in. They offered me $17 in cash or $32 in store credit. So the fact that they cut the value in half for cash because they really want you to choose the store credit is frustrating to me but I understand their smart business plan. I was satisfied with the fact that I got at least a little bit of money for some books that had been just wasting away in bins in my house, but I wish it would have been a little bit more. However, other than that, I adore this place. It's clean, the staff is friendly, and you can find some amazing used best-selling books for like $3. It's definitely hit-or-miss though. All the best books sell FAST so you just have to keep coming back. People bring in hundreds of used books a day so if you keep coming back, you will eventually find something great!! read more

Sooo, originally I really wasn't too fond of this place at all actually because they actually have the smallest poetry section I've ever seen which was very disappointing considering it was the main reason I decided to walk in.. Another big con for me was that even though they have a wide variety of manga , not ONE series did they hold the entire series and every one that I looked at was missing the first volume :/ And altogether they didn't have any of my favorite authors. (No chuck palahniuk, Charles Bukowski etc.) They have a huge plush and collectibles section which is great if your shopping for gifts of that sort but otherwise as a bookstore it just didn't grab my best interests. They are also a tad bit overpriced . First time in this store. I bought 1 DVD. took it home and it wouldn't work on 2 DVD players nor 2 computers. I brought it back. I couldn't find the receipt but the exact same woman helped me that sold it to me the day before. I was told I could get an in-store gift card but they would have to take 10% to restock it. I told her if she checked it in, I can walk it back to the shelf so I wouldn't lose my 10%. she said no. I ask for a manager, she said she was the manager. I mentioned I would post my experience in reviews and it could cost more than $0.70. I told her reputation of good customer service was important. she said it was policy and wouldn't do anything. The only reason I come here is because I have teenagers and in addition to selling books they sell vinyls, cds and other pop culture and novelty items. If I can help it I'll shop at Barnes and Noble. The customer service is almost always mediocre here. I had a very bad experience recently here. I was looking in the glass case of NES games and I wanted to look at a certain one and before I could say which one, "Hanna" grabbed one of the games out of the case and said "I'm holding this, our policy is employees can reserve items for 14 days." I was completely shocked she took that game out right in front of me a prospective buyer. Honestly it was one of the rudest things I ever experienced in a retail store. She had all day to take the game out of the case but only once she saw me looking did she do so. The store can't be ok with this type of behavior. If the employees get first dibs on collectibles and rare trade-ins what's the point? True collectors don't want the scraps, or else ppl like me will stop coming in and you will be stuck with a million POPs and candy nobody wants. The concept of the store and it's business model is fantastic. HOWEVER, their employees are not helpful. They never know anything if you have questions on the buy-back program as to what they're "looking" for specifically. At times it feels like a clicky after-school hangout FOR THE EMPLOYEES!! UPDATED ON NOV. 2, 2022 So I returned to shop here because they have great product but was once again extremely frustrated with the poor customer service -- wait -- RUDE workers. This time i could not even get them to look up what i wanted. And My biggest issue with this store is that it is NOT shoppable without spending hours searching EVERYTHING in the section cause what im looking for could be ANYWHERE when it comes to Vinyl, POP!'s, and books. Ok. The Funko and Vinyl are 2 of their meat and potatoes that draw huge amounts of diehard collectors. For the life of me I do not understand how the store manager is allowed to get away with the lack of any kind of organization in BOTH those sections. It is a total lack of respect to the customer. Why cant they have a team of a few employees stay overnight for a few days and ORGANIZE the product and make it a SHOPPABLE experience. The records are packed so tight in the bins you can NOT even look through them without pulling out a chunk of them in each bin. The customer should not have to WORK just to look through the B's for the Beatles even though most of their albums were found in the A's, some in the C's, N's, more in the T's, the W's, and then a few were found in the 2nd .. yes the 2nd --main pop rock section over in the next aisle all together. It is by far the absolute worse organization I have ever came across in a music store's artist sections by a longshot. The Goodwill is organized way better than this. And the sad part is it has been almost 5 months between my visits and it is the SAME EXACT problem 5 month later. 5 whole months NO..NONE..ZERO..ZILCH time has been spent recovering this section of their store. I am sorry but there is absolutley NO EXCUSE for this laziness from the stores staff. I am going to be contacting the district manager and will go to the regional if I have to but this is atrocious. 2.5 hrs later and i gave up 1/2 way through my digging. I did buy a copy of MOBY -PLAY that i found in the COUNTRY section. Yea WOW Wow wow. JUNE 16TH 2022 Went back here to sell some Funko Pop!'s valued over $850 and they tried to give me $40!! That is a joke. I also asked if a vinyl record was in stock and got blown off by bad customer service. After asking 2 more associates I was told they had it but trying to find it in their horribly shoppable vinyl section was gonna be a task. Their vinyl section makes no sense whatsoever and it is not that hard to maintain if you spend a day to fix it. Are they not training employees how to stock correctly? It truly is a shame cuz they have the best vinyl section in this part of town. I also was lòoking for a couple books to finish my collection by a very popular writer and I was told just look on a table. I wanted to see the author in the actual book section and was told there was none there. Isnt it supposed to work that there is copies in the main section then extra copies on a display to feature the author. This discombobulated merchandising is for the birds in this store. It makes no sense because organization makes a store shoppable and isnt that the purpose of being open? Just throwing product in easy to stock places does not make it fair to the customer and does not make a good look for the stores brand. I was excited to see that 2nd & Charles had a store in Jacksonville after I visited their Virginia location while in the area. My wife loves books and the selection of both new and used is unmatched so far. However, I was a bit disappointed in their comic book selection at this location. The Virginia store had a much larger selection and was a bit easier to browse (especially newer releases). I asked about a title I had been searching for and was told that they probably wouldn't receive it for a few weeks because they don't new releases. All in all, if you are looking for books or general nerdy merchandise this place is fantastic! This place has everything! Make sure to set aside enough time to enjoy everything. Their used book selection is hands down the best I've ever seen. They also have so much "book" merchandise. I had not heard of this store before it opened in Jacksonville, so when I had a few books laying around that I don't read anymore, I took them to the store to see how much I could get in cash with their buyback program. It is an easy process, where you put your books in a white bin, the sales associate creates a profile or looks up your current profile using a picture ID, and an "order" is created while they process the pricing on your buyback. Usually it doesn't take long, like in my case it was about an hour before they finished. The sad part was that I only got back $1.50 in cash, and I was surprised considering that some of the books I turned in were brand new or decent books. It was disappointing, but I guess it was to be expected. They do have a lot of inventory, and it isn't just books. They have CDs, movies, games, and more! I'll have to come back to shop instead of buyback. read more

For a nerd like myself, 2nd & Charles is pure heaven. Miles and miles of carefully organized and sorted book isles to browse. The store has both new and gently used books at discounted prices, which is what keeps me coming back. However, comic books, DVDs, CDs, video games and all sorts fan memorabilia is available here as well. The staff is always happy to help. When I have a specific book I am hunting down, but don't have time to search for myself, I go straight to the counter in the front of the store and ask one of the employees to look it up for me - they can then point me straight to the spot where my desired book is hiding. And if it so happens that they don't have the said book, they can search across all other store locations and have it shipped for me. Pretty nifty! And lastly, I cannot leave the store without glancing through the free bin. This little treasure box has books and movies that are in less than prime condition, but I have found some gems in here that I was more than happy to find a home for. read more

This store feels like the over abundant closet space shared by a teenaged boy and girl. Just an incoherent clutter of music, movies, books and toys overused by second hand parties looking to dispose their unwanted trash -- which is basically what the entire store stands for. Although I've been in this store to make a couple purchases in their over-eclectic (disorganized) movie selection, my most recent visits have been less than mediocre. My biggest issue is with the store's overall process of selling/trading old personal items. I brought in a huge chunk of my movies that I wanted to get rid of (and possibly trade in for cash). When I arrived at least an hour before closing, their little Buyback counter (in which handles all transactions of selling/trading old personal items) was closed due to how long it would take to "process" checking in all my movies I turned in. Instead of processing all the movies I turned in in a more efficient like an average pawn shop or any other book store that deal buying/trading personal items, the store entreated me to submit to a DMV-style method -- in which I had to fill out forms of my personal information and receive a ticket with a number on it until I was officially called. But given the fact that the Buyback counter was already closed prior to the store's official closing time, I was informed to come back tomorrow at a more "appropriate time" until my ticket was called. This was a ridiculous request from the employee behind the Buyback counter, due to her poor and stern customer service skills in addition to the fact that the Town Center is only a 30 to 45 minute commute from my house (and this location is the only one of close proximity). Reluctantly, I had to return thanks to the DMV-style method calling back my ticket number. Upon my return, the same employee from the night before informed that I had yet again to fill out another form confirming my transaction. In my eyes, it seemed pretty unnecessary to fill out another form to confirm my personal information with my signature and thumb print on the bottom. But none of the employees were compliant enough to instruct me with proper directions. By the time I was finished, the employee informed me that half the movies I turned in wouldn't be accepted due to overstock and that any additional excess of movies I didn't want would be thrown into the "Free Bin". My two options for the other half of movies that didn't get thrown out ultimately narrowed down to accepting $5 in cash or $12 in store credit. Already peeved by my overall experience with the store, I had undoubtedly to choose the $12 in store credit -- in which I had purchase two Adam Sandler movies that were well in that price range. After my recent experience with this store, I was left with an awkward feeling of emptiness upon my decision doing business with this store. If anything, it's best to just support a small independent business that's more sophisticated and efficient in their practices like Chamblin's Bookmine. I don't really care so much to return to any 2nd & Charles store any time in the far future. Their entire franchise is just so bland. read more

What a huge store. I honestly thought it was just another bookstore until I checked Yelp. Then I made a special trip with most of my family in tow to come check it out. You could literally spend a ton of time here. I was drawn to everything.... so you have to pace yourself and kinda make a mental note of how you are going to navigate. There is so much. You can find newer and older books. All sorts of cute things and things you haven't seen in a while. Very cool. You may want to have your phone handy to snap pics, in case you're a little forgetful like I am or want to check competitive prices. I like to take pics of stuff I may think is a good gift for someone and things like that. You can also bring your items in to be priced as well. The guy at the counter said it may take a little time depending on the amount of things you bring in as well as busier times of day. The also have sales, so check their website before heading out. We spend a decent amount of time, but we didn't go through everything intensely as we just came to check it out. We will certainly return, for sure. read more

2nd & Charles literally has 1000 copies of Justin Bieber's theatrical released movie, "Never Say Never" on DVD. If that's not incentive to at least walk into the store and check it out, I don't know what is. The main draw of 2nd & Charles is al the "geeky/nerdy" merchandise that they have to offer. Everything from pop cap toys to video games to comics. They also offer a wide array of books, movies, and music. It is a lot of stuff under one roof and I would find it hard to believe that someone who is interested in any of these things can't find something that they could buy for themselves. With that being said, the prices for somethings are a little up there. The idea is that you can see the product and buy it then and there without worrying about shipping, damage, or any other ailments happening to a precious collectible. If paying a premium for that security isn't a big deal then this is the place for you. Again, they have a ton of stuff.
