    Based on our recent experience, we would not recommend Southern Maryland Moving. We interviewed…read moreseveral local movers for a small but complex move, in which we had to move belongings from one location to another and then from both locations to storage. When Josh came to give us an estimate, he talked a good game and promised personalized and attentive service. Because he had been recommended by our real estate agent, he offered us a "friends and family" discount - but it's important to note that his quote was still one of the highest we received, and without the discount, would have been the highest. Nevertheless, we liked Josh, and decided we wanted to trust our realtor's recommendation and went with Southern Maryland Moving despite the higher price. So we paid our deposit and scheduled drop off of packing materials (at both locations). And then we sat around on the appointed day waiting... for nothing. Calls to the office resulted in us being informed that "someone hadn't shown up for work that day", no drop-off being scheduled, and no one bothering to tell us. We were rescheduled for two days later. I reached out to Josh, asking to speak with him, because I wanted reassurance that this wouldn't happen with our actual move but he didn't respond. Then on the new day for boxes, there was again massive confusion at the company over what was being sent to us, at which location, and when. I again asked Josh to call me to straighten this out, because I was now very concerned about his company's reliability; he sent a text instead. I asked again for a call, and he called me, but not to discuss: he informed me that we obviously needed a different standard of service far beyond what a "small family company" like his could provide, and said he was going to refund our deposit. He told me that our requirements were "unorthodox" and that "no moving company would do these things" (to be clear, what we were asking for was to have boxes dropped off at two locations, not one, as we specifically discussed with him at the time he visited our house to prepare the estimate). Without even listening to what I might have wanted to say, he accused me of "wanting to take a slice" of him. Josh literally refused to allow me to speak and then hung up on me. Then by text he told me he'd have the boxes delivered, free of charge. He did refund our deposit, but the boxes were of course not delivered. This moving company doesn't appear to have the resources, organization or leadership to operate effectively. A "small family company" should offer a personal approach and treat each customer with respect and concern. A "small family company" should also be competitive on price, especially if it isn't going to offer responsive customer service. Instead Josh is spoiling for a fight with anyone who expects him to honor his word, meet deadlines, and do the same work as any other moving company. For context, my wife and I have moved together 13 times, each time hiring a professional mover. We have never encountered a problem like this, or a company so unwilling to accept responsibility or even speak with a customer. I would urge caution to anyone thinking about hiring them for a move.

    I would give a "0" if it was possible. The owner was out of town, so his mom came to give the…read moreestimate. We were charged a trip charge of $175 for a 10 minute move. On moving day two men showed up. One of them had a bad arm, so he couldn't do much. He also took a break every 10 minutes to smoke. Once they arrived to the new location, the same thing and each time they brought something into the house they would take it to the wrong room, even though we were there showing them where to go. Afterwards they tried to charge me more than the estimate because they said it took longer. The person on the phone was very rude and I told her to have the owner call me to discuss, I shouldn't have to pay extra because they sent someone who wasn't capable of working properly. I received several additional rude texts from her, but never heard from the owner. Needless to say I did not pay the additional amount.
