This was truly a smooth process from start to finish. John was very transparent and communicated every step effectively. He was very clean with demo and vacuumed after every demolition. We ended up having to repair a wall due to termite damage. We had electrical/gas lines moved, lighting placed under cabinets and above the peninsula, appliances installed, and flooring repaired/adjusted. Tile backsplash was installed and granite countertops. John, David (cabinets), Vicente (tile), Abel (countertop) were all on time and very communicative when it came to any slight changes or questions. They are an amazing team. This is one of the first of many major projects to our home and it came out so wonderful and functional. We expanded our storage and now have a peninsula. It took about a month and it was well worth it. It went by fast and that's because of how clean it was and that is that we have 2 big dogs. Trust me when I say that it is not easy during renovations, but it was completely doable. We are very happy with our remodeled kitchen and look forward to working with John in the future. We are extremely grateful for such wonderful work. Side note: have patience as your home may have mishaps that maybe were not planned (termite damage to the wall) and it was addressed and is now fixed. John and his team re-installed our cabinets and countertops after a previous contractor had made some major mistakes. He was able to resolve all the issues and saved us a boatload of money by using the existing cabinetry and allowing us to supply our own countertops. We saved even more by un-attaching the previous cabinets ourselves. John is genuinely concerned about making sure that his customers are satisfied with the work done. His workmanship is okay, but not great. He used warped wood. I contacted him more recently, but he doesn't reply. Unreliable is the best word to describe 21st Century KB. John just completed in September a huge remodel of our kitchen and family room. There was a lot of structural changes and since we got a permit he had to deal with the city inspectors. He handled it every step of the way like a true professional. John is meticulous. His site is always clean. Our painter said he did the best trim work he had ever seen. Not Worth the Money Paid - Corners Cut Everywhere and Services Downgraded After Discounts Offered - Homeowners Beware We bought a new house and remodeled the entire kitchen and the first floor of the house. Searched and interviewed over 8 contractors at various pricing points. John, I give him credit at that, for being a good communicator, promised everything if we choose his company for the job. He even offered 15% discount to undercut the other contractor finalist for the job. Unbeknownst to us, the 15% discount meant cutting corners and taking unacceptable short-cuts. The non-disclosure of what goes with the 15% discount prompted me to write this lengthy review. The cost of the entire project was around $10,000 for installation of non-custom cabinets in a completely empty kitchen. 1. We never received a cabinet layout diagram prior to John began installing the cabinets. I should have taken this as a major red flag. I have to give John credit here, he really is a great talker, calm and articulate, he appeared to know what he was doing, so I believed him when he said he knows exactly what we wanted. After discovering cabinets were installed at incorrect locations, we asked John for a pre-installation diagram to review before any more mistakes occur. John claimed because of the 15% discount he offered, we can't expect him to provide us with any digital layout of the kitchen. He didn't even have a hand written one to show us. OMFG!!! 2. When cabinet doors weren't lined up, when gaps between the cabinet doors and the cabinet itself weren't congruent, when the cabinet drawers weren't in a straight line, John blamed the makers of the cabinets. Even the cabinet door handles were not installed symmetrically. I had to point this out to him several times for him to realize the measurements were off. Moreover, the handles on double doors cannot be redone because holes were already drilled. Now every time I'm sitting in the kitchen staring directly at the uneven handles I cringe. 3. Cabinet mark-ups: I also had the displeasure of finding out 21st Century Kitchen and Baths mark-up cabinets more than 5 times the retail price after calling the brand's local distributor. I wouldn't have mind the price had John performed the work at a high standard. $10,000 for 15 standard cabinets with substandard installation is utterly repulsive. I hope my review helps other homeowners avoid the same pain we've gone through. I have extremely high expectations and John met all of them!! He is a perfectionist when it comes to his work... when he drills a hole he chases it with a shop vac! He was so clean and always left his work space how he arrived ! He is honest and that  s something very hard to find when you are having work done in your home. John has done a lot of work for us over the last 7 years and I am more than happy to share with everyone our experiences with 21st Century. I will lead with this...I am a mechanical engineer. If you have ever known or lived with an engineer, you will know that we are a picky, finicky, perfectionist bunch. The little details matter much to us. John always meets my expectations for detail and quality, and that is the highest compliment that can be given to someone in his profession in my opinion. He gets the pain in the rear engineer stamp of approval. John as done 3 bathrooms, two kitchens, a custom built in master closet, and two custom built in hall closets for us. He has also done work for my parents (the beautiful kitchen with the blue island pictured here on yelp) and friends of ours. The first kitchen he did for us was transforming a very dated condominium kitchen into a sleek contemporary affair. The second was a completely custom kitchen taken down to the studs and recreated with a new modern layout complete with slab front cabinets, gorgeous dolomite counters, hidden and built in appliances and a new island where there was not one before. Similarly our first two baths that he did were simple affairs with new cabinetry, and a bath to shower conversion whereas the most recent bath John did for us was a completely custom affair where he moved the toilette and reconfigured the whole bath for us. To say that John is capable of doing anything from a simple rehab to to a completely custom room of your dreams would be an understatement. His custom cabinet work, while not explicitly kitchen and bath, has transformed our other spaces, adding built in wardrobes, dressers and linen closets. John will always leave your home cleaner than when he arrived, every day, not just at the end of the job. He will fix something if it is not right or to your liking. He will build you exactly what you want. The last thing you should know about John, is he is a fantastic guy. We love having him in our home, invite him to stay for dinner when he is working here, and largely slow his work down by standing around and shooting the breeze with him because he is an extremely amiable and good natured person to catch up with. Having our kitchen refaced in 2016 by John, which turned out great, it was only natural that we chose him to remodel our full bath. It was in dire need of a major makeover! I have used John for several projects in my home over the last year. The first was a built in media center with a faux fireplace. In the media center he integrated all of my home theater wiring with speaker jacks, a TV mount, subwoofer cabinet and shelves for the electronic equipment. He is meticulous at what he does, cleans up as he goes and takes pride in his work. More recently I had him order and install a linen closet for my hallway. His work on this project was flawless. Looks like the builder put it in the house originally. The last project was a storage area that I wanted constructed under my stairway. Previously, this space was a giant void that the builder left walled up. He opened a hole in my wall, finished off the space with electrical and drywall and installed a door. John Salinas came over to give me an estimate for kitchen cabinet refacing. He was very preoccupied with whether or not I was getting other estimates. He asked me if I was getting other estimates when I spoke with him on the phone before scheduling him for an estimate. No problem with that. While he was writing up the estimate, he asked me again if I was getting other estimates, if I had already obtained estimates, and whether or not other contractors were coming out today. He verbally reacted when I indicated that his was the first estimate and seemed to be quite concerned about this for some reason. He asked me about other estimates four times in the 20 minutes he was here. What is with his obsession? John Salinas is an excellent contractor. We have known him for over 5 years. Initially he was very kind to come out to do some minor repairs at our home in Laguna Niguel. A year later we called him to bid the remodel of our kitchen, including new cabinets, countertops and appliances. After interviewing 4 companies, we chose 21st Century, John's company, and we were very happy with the results. He is very skilled, provides accurate and fair prices and completes the work in a timely (and tidy) manner. We hired him again in 2014 when it was time to remodel our master bath and replace all our carpet with wood flooring. He does much of the work himself, including the cabinetry installation and wood flooring. He brought other talented guys to do granite and tile work.
