Walter came to fix pull out shelves on a corner KraftMaid cabinet unit in our kitchen. He was very friendly and knowledgeable. He identified the issue quickly and highlighted the lazy workmanship from our kitchen installers (Taranto Construction, Inc in Claremont, CA) who were subcontracted through Lowe's (who we purchased our kitchen from). The shelves collapsed because of loose screws from lazy installers at Taranto Construction, Inc. It's infuriating to have to pay someone to come solve an issue that goes back to completely loose screws in the hardware that would've taken an extra 5 seconds to properly tighten at the initial install. But they know people won't see it, so they cut corners. DO NOT EVER USE TARANTO CONSTRUCTION INC in Claremont CA for a kitchen install, or any Lowe's in the surrounding area, as this is who they refer the work to. After spending a short amount of time with Walter, it's clear he knows what he is doing and is a professional. He even tightened and adjusted other cabinet doors in our kitchen he noticed issues with that had nothing to do with the cabinet shelves he came to fix. Walter is a true CRAFTSMAN, not just some guy who works for a chain who wants to convince you to buy their product. We did a reface of our cabinets and Walter was the right guy to do it! Walter worked with us to pick the right product and colors. We went with Shinnoki real wood veneer panels. They are beautiful and durable. Once they got the veneer up, they routed then hand-filed all of the openings. Then that meticulously painted the face frames to match the veneer. They even painted around the drawers where you can see very little of the painting they did. That shows a lot of pride! Walter also gave us the look of frameless cabinets even though we would have had to replace the cabinet boxes in order to make them frameless. That's a lot of extra work. We got a custom job for less than the price of a non-custom job. In the photos you can see the detail I'm talking about. I've included before and after pictures. The before pictures are all dark, ugly drawers and doors. The after pictures are the modern, two-tone look. In one photo in which I have a drawer pulled out with hot pads in it, Walter designed that and made it fit. There was not a drawer in there before because it's under the stove and the gas line was in the way. But Walter moved it. Walter's very conscientious and not afraid to tell you if he thinks something is not going to look good. He'll do whatever you want, but we learned that he knows what he's talking about. We contacted The Cabinet Master & Son because of the ratings given in Yelp. The five stars match the quality of their work. The total time it took to remake our kitchen cabinets was 5 weeks and well worth the wait. Walter met with us and we set up a schedule that worked for us. The payment plan was absolutely reasonable with the bulk payment given at project completion. We didn't want any major redesign of the floor plan and wanted to keep our base cabinets as they were made of wood. But, we wanted new doors and wanted to convert cabinets into pull-out drawers. We had an idea of the type of cabinets we wanted to suit the style of the home, but Walter brought sample door styles as well as crown molding. We purchased appliances and had them delivered before work began so realtime measurements can be taken for fitting. We are thrilled with the outcome. I interviewed several contractors and chose this company because my 1st pick was waaay overpriced. The pricing of this company is fair, not the highest or lowest. Our job was large, lots of cabinets. Walter, the owner/boss, is a likable person and works very hard. But he is spread way too thin and relies too much on his crew, some of whom need more attention from him. I did not like many of the crews that came here but I did like the carpentry crew headed by Gus. In short, the stone guy was rude, the painter was full of baloney, the tiler was so-so as long as you use white grout with white tiles. The crews are so busy that they often don't finish their job before they leave for the next one and it is very hard to get them back to finish. REALLY hard. The whole time is one big stressful experience. It was supposed to take 3 weeks but took 9 weeks. I could go into lots of details here but I won't. It is my opinion that cabinet refacing takes just as long as complete replacement so be ready for that. Like I said, Walter is a nice guy and knows cabinetry well but is spread too thin. Sometimes he himself corrects install issues which was comforting as he does very careful work. But the crews...not so much...except Gus. After the job was finally finished, we liked our kitchen. My husband and I chose nice, high end stuff which looks great (appliances, tiles, outer hardware, faucets, lighting, stone). Also, installation issues were ultimately corrected except... ...the problem now is that our drawers don't close well. They bounce back open. We have about 24 drawers in our large-ish kitchen. During installation, we were talked out of soft-close drawers...Walter said they break after about 5 years...good point. But bouncing-open drawers are not good either. And over time, they are getting worse. There must be some hardware that fixes this problem...and I will gladly pay for it. So I am trying to get Walter to come back and upgrade our drawer sliders. But guess what? It continues to take an act of god to get this scheduled. I'm left frustrated and begging again. I will update this review for the drawer issue, once it is addressed. UPDATE #1: Got the new soft close drawer rails installed by Gus but he forgot to replace one of the cabinet hinges, which was part of the original deal. Walter said he will come do the hinges himself when he comes to collect $ for the upgraded rails. Fine, no problem. I also added a trash can lid order cuz the new trash can pullout stinks without lids, especially as weather warms up. So I assumed this next and final step would easily/quickly happen cuz I owe $1200 which he surely wants to collect. But I have not heard back. Will update again when this is all over. (The kitchen project started last October.) UPDATE #2: So happy to get my hinge, trash lids and last drawer fixed today. So it is all done. Walter himself came and did it. Like I said before, he is a nice guy and works very hard. So I have updated my review to reflect the final outcome. Our kitchen looks very nice. read more

Walter is the main contact/owner, and from getting the estimate to the final phase of the project he was outstanding. After obtaining a few bids we decided to go with The Cabinet Master & Son for our entire kitchen cabinets and 3 bathroom cabinets re-facing project. Walter's bid was not the lowest, but he was not the highest either, and it was obvious from the start he had a very professional approach, something I did not sense from some of the other contractors. The entire job was completed in about 3 1/2 days and he added a few extra touches without charging extra, such as staining the wood molding on the inside lip of the kitchen cabinets so that when the cabinet doors are opened you see wood that matches the new wood doors/drawers. He also installed our new over the stove microwave, which I had figured I would be doing once they had finished and left, but Walter and his crew did the extra details that made all the difference in the world. We had confidence that Walter would do really good work and even with our high expectations he easily exceeded them. If you don't at least get an estimate and take a few minutes to allow Walter to share his opinions on your project you are really missing out. One of the best contactors we have ever used and we have used a lot of contactors through the years. The difference between a good contactor and a not-so-good contactor is much like the difference between a custom built home and a track built home. I prefer the higher quality, but I also do a lot of shopping around to make sure I'm not over paying and Walter delivered custom high-end results without totally wrecking our budget. read more

I am so happy to write this review, even though it has been a while! Walter and his guys gave us a thorough estimate, not the cheapest but not the highest either. We liked him and his professionalism right away. We hired him to paint over some late 80's golden oak cabinets in a townhome we bought in 2010. They came in and quickly and efficiently plastic sealed the kitchen, prepped all cabinets, and got on with it. He custom mixed a beautiful color for me (giving me SEVERAL choices) and I chose a beautiful rich deep brown, with a hint of wine in it, like a smooth dark chocolate bar, with a satin finish. Within one week, everything was done, perfectly, including all new hinges and hardware on the cabinets. He even added a custom built bookcase for me, and did a bathroom in the same color, for very reasonable prices. The team was prompt, clean, neat, courteous, and actually delightful people to have in your house. Walter knows what he is doing! These are old school, old world craftsmen, who take a lot of pride in their work. We were so so pleased, the results were beautiful, and we are just now starting to need some nicks and spots touched up, this kitchen gets a lot of really hard use. We will be calling him again.
