I never knew this place existed until I ate at Greeks last week in the next block. When I searched for Greeks to check in, lo and behold I found out about this place. So naturally I just had to check it out. The storefront is nothing special but once you pass through the doorway, you find an upscale decorated establishment ready to serve your fine dining needs. 21 North has two large dining rooms, a full bar area, and a hostess lectern. Parking is strictly on the street with angled parking across the street facing the courthouse. Once the courthouse closes, probably around five, I would imagine a lot of those spaces will open up. I arrived at 4:30 pm and got a parallel spot right in front of the restaurant. There were two more available on my side of the street as well. I ordered the Beer Battered Fish, Shrimp & Chips with coleslaw. FYI: The menu prices list on their Yelp listing are out of date. My bad for not posting a new one. This entree is now $36 as well as the Beef Filet but they are the most expensive items, everything else is scaled down from there. I'll post an updated menu the next time I stop in which will most likely be very soon. I didn't go with the Spicy Horseradish Cocktail Sauce and substituted ketchup instead. The coleslaw was okay, a little milky for my taste but still good. The tartar sauce was very good. The shrimp were big. It took 2-3 bites to finish one. Two large filets of their fish which was light on batter around thickly cut portions of fish. All extremely good. I managed to finish all of it and still have room for dessert. Then there was a dump truck load of french fries covering the entire large plate, lol. Two or three people could share those fries easily. These were their plain fries, NOT the Truffle Parmesan Fries. If I wasn't watching my weight I would have tried to devour all those fries because they were excellent, cooked perfectly, exactly the way I like them. For dessert, I chose the Italian Lemon Cake. It was the bomb! Not a huge portion (YAY) to help you avoid feeling over stuffed. I'll be ordering that dessert again for sure. It tasted so good. It wasn't too heavy on the lemon flavor which I loved. Looks like I have found a new regular restaurant for my dining needs. Frankly, I was quite surprised to learn that Martinsville has such a great restaurant. In addition, I was equally surprised to learn that there is much more to Martinsville than the gas stations and fast food you once passed on SR 37. Shame on me. We arrived a few minutes ahead of our 6:00 reservation and there was a lot of nearby street parking. Located in a town square (ish) area, there's no parking lot, but plenty nearby street parking that appeared to be free. The restaurant is nice and larger than expected. It's rustic with exposed brick and barn doors. It wasn't busy when we walked in to meet the hostess, who will seat you, but it did fill up. We had a large party and our server handled us expertly. She managed to meet all of our needs for more drinks, sauce, this, that, or the other with a smile. My intentions to stick to carb restriction went out the window when an appetizer portion of their Parmesan Truffle Fries showed up with a variety of aioli options for dipping. Ugh. So good. I got the shrimp cocktail and that came with seven plump shrimp that were sweet and delicious. The cocktail sauce was good, but I suffer from an addiction to horseradish and always want more. I tried a dumpling and some fried calamari, both were good. They had a sandwich on the menu called What The Cluck (or something like that) and it's freshly made jalapeño biscuit, fried chicken, crispy bacon, etc. caught my eye. Bring on the carbs. It was incredible. Of course, I got a side of those amazing fries. Oh my goodness, that biscuit. It was tender and flaky. There's still half of the sandwich in my fridge and can't eat it, but knowing that it's there is killing me. They have a rotating chef course menu that comes with wine pairings. It looked amazing and, for the amount of food, was well priced. In fact, everything was very well priced for the quality. Split dessert with my friend. Some kind of tripe chocolate mouse cake. It was really good and not overly sweet, which is great. Had a nibble of the pumpkin cheesecake, too. 21 North Eatery & Cellar is an excellent spot for a quick and tasty lunch while enjoying downtown Martinsville. With plenty of exposed brick and beautiful woodwork, the atmosphere was cozy and yet a bit upscale. The menu was limited, but everything on it sounded amazing so it was hard to decide! We ended up splitting two different half and half entrees. One was grilled cheese with fries (and three dipping sauces) and the other was chicken salad with tomato bisque soup. Everything was delicious and very filling, but the favorite was dipping the grilled cheese into the soup. YUM! Comfort food with a twist. Editing my rating to a 1-star critique: I just received a response from the Owner, and here's the reaction they decided was what they thought was the proper response as a business owner to provide me with on my review; Instead of apologizing and owning up to the poor service I recently received from their wait staff. They decided it would be best to point their finger back at Me, their former customer, by criticizing me for something as simple as a spelling error. It makes you stop and think about why people nowadays don't even want to take responsibility for their actions. I'm human. I take responsibility, so I made a mistake in my spelling. I'm human. Then they claim that all of my reviews are negative. That's not true. What is true, however, is that I speak my mind in writing when I have a negative experience. However, when I have a positive experience at a restaurant or business, I pass it on to my clients, whom I talk to every day multiple times a day. Sometimes I speak to good experiences about 40 to 60 times a day, and word-of-mouth recommendations drive business to those places. "If you do build a great experience, customers tell each other about that. Word of mouth is very powerful." -Jeff Bezos - Maybe if the owner would open their mouth to their employees about how they need to improve, things might change. Who knows, stranger things have happened. In the future, when my clients ask for recommendations, I will tell my clients and family never to patronize this restaurant because this restaurant seems to be run by a patronizing owner--just my opinion. I will say, though, the one good thing I found about this restaurant is the salad dressing and salad. The salad dressing is fantastic! Because this restaurant has poor service and a lack of quality control measures to ensure that they are providing high-quality food to their customers, it makes it so that this restaurant is not worth wasting your time and money. It would be worth the money if the service was better and they paid attention to proper quality control measures to ensure that the high-quality ingredients they advertise are treated and served correctly. Instead of just paying attention to the fancy-looking menus and fancy ingredients, they might serve some good food. This week we went to the 21 North. This is a big step up to the other restaurant we have visited. The atmosphere was a combination of rustic and classic from the exposed brick and oak hardwood floor to the presentation of food were fantastic. Our server was very attentive. This is a place to come, relax and enjoy the time with friends and family. We started our meal with steamed pork dumplings. The wife was hesitant to try but after the first taste, she was hooked. I ordered the fish, shrimp and chips. I am so sorry that I didn't check my phone to check my photos before eating. Imagine a plate covered in fries, topped with a large slap for fish and 4 jumbo shrimp with a golden beer batter. I could not finish this and had to ask for a box to go. The wife order the Caesar salad. She would have been more than happy with this as her meal after the pork dumplings. She loved the smoked chickpeas. Her entree was a chicken sandwich that was full of complex, but very satisfying flavors. The "bun" is actually a cheddar and light jalapeno biscuit with an aioli sauce. She asked for it on the side out of fear it might be to spicy but quickly added it to the sandwich and the fries I had. She only had room for a small tasting, but it was finished before night was over. All of this made for a great night out! read more

Fun place in downtown Martinsville the outside needs some work or make it more inviting because the inside is awesome! Old brick walls but a fun new vibe. I'm as picky as they come when choosing a pork chop! Growing up it wasn't uncommon in our home to have small, thin and dry chops. When asking the server what she recommended the pork chop was the first thing she noted. I am someone who will take the recommendation of a server 8/10 times. And she was spot on. 21 north provides one of the best cuts and cooks on pork I've ever had. Although I am not a resident of Martinsville I will have to venture down from time to time for this dish. As for my boyfriend he went with the salmon served over orzo. Thankfully I was able to give this a try as well. Delicious as well. Seems like you cannot go wrong with their crafted dishes. My wife and I visit Martinsville several times throughout the year- their amazing farmer's market, fresh donuts at the local bakery and the wonderful local shopping downtown. We had heard of 21 North from friends but never had the opportunity to eat there so we were very excited. We arrived on a Saturday for lunch around 12pm. Immediately, we noticed the beautiful atmosphere and welcoming decor. The hostess seated us quickly, and the tables & chairs were nicely clean. Our waitress introduced herself and noted the entre' and soup of the day. Before arriving, we looked at the menu on their website an noticed a huge difference than the one provided; our waitress explained that they updated the menu the prior week and the website has not been updated. So, if you are looking online the current menu maybe much different, including a much less offerings. We started off with 2 appetizers: Truffle Parm Dipping Fries and Shrimp Cocktail. The fries were cooked perfectly with a nice crunch on the outside and soft in the center and the dipping sauces were very flavorful/ tasty. However, the portion size of the dipping sauces is very small just about enough for a few fries each, so we asked for additional sauces not knowing later we would be charged for each additional sauce- complete surprise for such an upscale dinning eatery. The shrimp cocktail was a complete disaster! There were 5 shrimp that look like came from Kroger's (I have had much larger shrimp from Kroger's sadly) and a tiny side of cocktail sauce that basically tasted like ketchup. Again, I asked for additional cocktail sauce and was charged on my bill without anyone saying such. I would NOT recommend the shrimp cocktail. From there we enjoyed our side salad and a bowl of their soup of the day which was spicy chicken soup. Their homemade blue cheese dressing was chunky the way I like but there was this sweetness that was unpleasant; was very odd in a bule cheese dressing. The soup was more of a chowder (thick cream base) than soup so was a bit mislead; however, the taste was spot on with a little spiciness- yummy. Would have preferred a little less thickness and more of a soup consistency. The main event: the Wagyu Burger and WTF- What the Farm. The wagyu burger was a bit over cooked to my liking for I had asked for a medium temp range and received a medium well. I had added a slice of smoked gouda and it was only placed on top instead of being slighted melted on the burger meat as I would have expected. Overall, the burger was tasteless; I would not recommend. Now, the WTF was exceptional! The chicken was cooked to perfection and very flavorful and the Kentucky bacon was delicious; highly recommended. Overall, the experience was just okay. We are undecided if a return visit is warranted but if we do we will try their dinner menu. read more

I just stopped in for lunch at this hidden classy gem on the town square in Martinsville. W.O.W. The restaurant features beautiful exposed brick, industrial lighting, arched doorways, and hardwood floors. There is even a room available to reserve for large parties that have sliding barn doors for privacy. The bar offers an extensive list of both classic and seasonal cocktails (aka "Giggle Water"). The seasonal hot totties sound amazing, but I didn't sample them since it was the middle of a work day. Side note #1... there is no wi-fi offered, and I think the building was interfering with my Verizon hot spot reception. I was really excited to see that there are power outlets available every few feet so I could plug in my tablet though. The lunch menu is available 11am-3pm. Entrees are offered 3p-Close. I ordered the grilled goat cheese, provolone, red onion jam & arugula sandwhich w Roasted tomato soup. They offer Coke products, hot and flavored tea, milk, coffee, lemonade, juice (apple, cranberry, and orange). I am a huge fan of tomato soup and this may be my new favorite!! It was full of flavor and had a fresh pureed texture. Highly recommend!!! The grilled cheese was equally flavorful without being overpowered by the red onion jam. Even though the red onions were prevalent, their sweetness took away any chance of onion breath. The prices are very reasonable, and I'm surprised they don't charge more. They turned down the lights at 3pm on the dot, maybe to signal the change in menu. Overall, I will absolutely be back and I'll be bringing friends and family with me next time. We've live in Martinsville for years thinking we had to go to Indy for something like this. How convenient that we have now found fine dining in Martinsville only 15 minutes from home!! Side note #2... I used Google maps to get here, but it kept taking my to the wrong side of the town square. I just did a lap around the square and found it on the same side as the probation office. We had a great lunch here mid-week. Our server was top notch and the food was so tasty! Two of us had fish and chips. One of us had the fried honey chicken sandwich on a brioche bun with a side salad. Every bite of the sandwich was fabulous and the salad had fresh berries! Our fourth ordered pan fried fish since he's gluten intolerant. We appreciated the chef's flexibility in preparing the fish this way. His side was a bowl of chili. My wife and I visited this establishment for the firs time with friends who have been here many times. I wasn't sure what to expect from the outside, but that's why there's a door, right? Once inside there are two large dining halls and a full bar area. Both dining halls are wide open with brick walls and hard floors, so it can get pretty loud with only a few small crowds. To with I ordered one of the craft beers on hand and their parmesan fries for an appetizer. Both were on the time in a very short matter of time and the fries were impossible to stop eating. For our entrees, my wife ordered the potato encrusted salmon over penne pasta and carrots. For myself, I ordered the Hunny Chicken Sandwich with Brussel sprouts. Despite being rather busy and short-handed at the same time, all of our dishes arrived in short order. After having gorged myself on the parmesan fries, I didn't have room for the brussel sprouts, but I absolutely devoured the Hunny Chicken Sandwich, which was very delicious. We found 21 North Eatery on Yelp when we came in town for a high school football game. We love to find hidden gems that are locally owned! This is definitely that!! Starting with the drinks, starter and entrees, everything was definitely 5 stars! Our bartender was attentive and great at suggesting drinks. We had the Smoked Bulleit and it was the perfect blend of smoky with the taste of the bourbon. Our Chicken Potstickers were perfectly cooked and the flavor was spot on. The broccoli cheese soup was above par! There was no extra seasoning needed at all. The Hunny chicken sandwich was perfectly cooked and the hot honey was the perfect mix and sweet and spicy. I've only been here twice, but after moving a bit out of the city this place has become closer to home, and I'm glad I found it. While they have a rotating menu, I've tried several things that were absolutely wonderful. Fried chicken sandwich with Swiss, ham, and something I'm forgetting. Delicious; perfectly fried, meat also beat the size of the bread. Bread was went perfectly with the sandwiches. As someone who hates soggy fries, this place did it right. None of my fries were under done. Fried fish / shrimp. There's a lot of styles, breading types/thickness/ crunch and this place is exactly how I prefer mine. (I didn't order this, I pilfered from another plate.) Second visit was a Cuban sandwich. Every flavor had a purpose on that sandwich. They also appear to have a pretty solid wine and whiskey selection. While I picked a couple that were out, there were plenty more that I was more than happy to order. Service is friendly, building and decor is clean and on point. I'm pretty sure I could pick multiple things off of any menu that I would love to devour. read more

We would order from this establishment many times during the pandemic to support local businesses. Food has always been great with great service. We visited this past week for lunch and noticed the lunch and dinner menus are the same. I am sure they still have dinner specials. The food was good, the service was excellent but for lunch meal of two entrees, a beer and soda $64.00 was a little steep. We were sorry to see they no longer had the soup and sandwich lunch special. The food was soggy, tasted like oil. Told my husband to kiss me because I just got screwed on our dinner. We did not eat it all because we were both feeling sick so totally not worth the money. This place has lots of potential. The building and dining areas are very cool and the bar is large. Staff is super friendly. As we come back from covid closures, some staff may be new. Although the servers are genuinely kind and caring, the lack of experience is evident and they miss a lot in training. Drinks take longer to arrive but I believe the chef/owner was also bartending. We had the wings to start. Buffalo sauce isn't too spicy, good for all palettes. Big and meaty, not over sauced, served with a garnish of radish and carrot matchsticks. I chose the veggie burger. Made in house. The flavors are good. I think mine was quite undercooked or the mix isn't bound correctly as it was more of an oatmeal consistency than a burger. Presentation is a 10! I also had truffle fries and they are the highlight of the meal, served with a robust aioli. We tried the carrot cake which was the perfect size slice and really delicious. Amazing food!! Make the drive to Martinsville folks! Our favorite menu items: burgers, fries, pork chop, fish & Chips, all the fresh seafood options which are usually one of the specials. Seriously wonderful chef in the kitchen at 21 North in Martinsville! Our only issue we have with this place is they have a terrible draft beer selection. Of the 4 they had on draft, 3 of them don't work for most people. The only good draft beer was Bell's Oberon. The beer selection person clearly isn't a beer drinker. Peanut butter flavored beer!? Really? Bar manager, you have several amazing breweries to choose from in Indy, please get some local IPA's, Pale Ales, etc. Daredevil IPA, Mashcraft, Centerpoint, there are so many. This is a really nice addition to Martinsville. I stopped in for lunch on a Saturday and received fast, friendly service with no wait. I was a little surprised by the prices. My burger was $14 plus another $1 for cheese, which seems a bit steep for a lunch burger, even in Indianapolis. The dipping fries and sauces were awesome. This place is a smalltown gem, give it a try! Family member rented out the larger room off to the side for a birthday party. Could not have been happier with our experience. They had a bartender for us in the back of the room. They had some beer set aside in a tub for us and ran back/fourth to the bar for items they didn't have. Eventually, they got to know what we wanted and would keep them in the tub ready. Excellent service The food.. had a mix, fries, burgers, chicken sandwich, shrimp and more. Everything was amazing, can't think of a single complaint overall. We have been to this restaurant numerous times. The last time we went we both ordered the burger medium. When we received them both were almost raw. The buns were drenched in blood. Sent back and then received them Way overdone. Waitress was nice as can be and said they were training someone new. She brought us a piece of cake. We paid and left but driving home we said we should have declined the cake and sent back the burgers. This is supposed to be an upscale restaurant and they should know not to make the customer suffer. We have tried calling the manager several times and he is ignoring us. That's so not acceptable. If you own a restaurant then own up to situations like this. If you have new staff then oversee until they get the hang of it. Don't let your customers down. Like you did us. read more

I stopped in for lunch and quickly had my attention drawn to the "pick two items for $8" lunch special. I passed on the salad in favor of the soup of the day (Southwestern Chicken Tortilla) and the three sliders. The sliders can be all the same kind or one of each of the available choices. I went with the Ham & Cheese, the Egg Salad, and the Chicken Salad option. The soup was really great. Nice size bowl with just a bit of heat, more than my wife might like, but perfectly fine for me. Lots of texture and the tortilla strips placed on top stayed mostly crisp though floating on the surface. The sliders were nice options, especially going with all three flavors. The Ham & cheese was particularly light on fillings, mostly dominated by the bun. The egg salad, again, a bit light on filling, was rich in flavor and quite a bit more appealing in flavor. The chicken salad was pretty good, but the bites where I got bits of sliced grapes were really good! As I said, lots of bread on these mini sandwiches, but you can only pack so much on them or risk having the stuffing fall out. There was plenty of parking along the street or around the courthouse (usually good for 2 hours). The interior was long and narrow. The sound was about average for a lunch venue. And the service was really good. I mentioned I was on a time constraint due to my business at the courthouse across the street. I made a quick decision and was surprised at how quickly my plate and bowl came back to me. I was in and out of the restaurant in 20 minutes! I really appreciated the effort put in by my waitress to expedite my meal and check out. Overall, I enjoyed my lunch. They have more expensive items on the list for evening dining as well. I attended the holiday brunch they hosted. We made reservations and upon arriving we were seated after a few minutes. While the restaurant was busy it calmed down by the time 30 minutes had passed from the time we ordered our drinks and food at the same time. After an hour of waiting for our food it finally came out. Only to be missing part of our meal which our waitress told us she would go get. However, we never received it and she never came back to check on us just to get our plates from the table. We had to ask the hostess for a coke we waited 25 minutes for. Overall, I'm very disappointed in the service. I gave two stars simply because of how nice the hostess was in trying to pick up the slack. read more

I was really looking forward to going to 21 North. It was very nice, clean ambiance Was charming- so far so good. Now the bad news-Sadly the food was just not good. I had the house with the SOD (chicken tortilla soup) salad was just ok, it had one strawberry & 2 blackberries on it only. It was supposed to have other things but it didn't. Now let's get this soup, if I had to describe it I would say, shredded chicken in an oil base with a few pieces of leftover corn & green beans in it. I love chicken tortilla soup but this was not chicken tortilla soup. No tortilla, no onion and no cilantro I'm am not giving up, I'm going to go back again and try dinner, hopefully it will be everything I hoped. We all have bad days. read more

We've heart great things about 21 North Eatery so drove from Bloomington for dinner on a Saturday night. The interior was very well done and had a great overall vibe and upon entering we were promptly seated to a booth. We started the evening ordering an Old Fashioned and a glass of Rose and while the Old Fashioned was decently made, I was disappointed to find the Rose was served room temperature as no Rose should ever be served room temperature. We skipped over an appetizer but selected the special of the night and a grilled chicken sandwich for dinner. The friendly waitress described the special of the night as a rolled pork loin over ratatouille which actually was a Pancetta that was fairly heavy in a demi-glaze. Unfortunately my boyfriend isn't a fan of pork belly or Pancetta so he only ended up eating a few bites. The meal had a decent flavor but was heavy and he only ordered it believing it was a loin. My chicken sandwich was served on a perfectly toasted bun and had a great flavor with brie and fig jam but the chicken was a very thin and small breast that was not prepared very well. Overall the flavor of the sandwich was good but I couldn't get beyond how the chicken was prepared. The parmesan truffle fries and aioli served on the side were definitely my favorite part of the meal! Since we've heard so many great things we do want to eventually give it another chance and are hoping we didn't order the right things but all in all our experience was average to our standards. It is a gem for Martinsville though as there don't seem to be many non-chain options in the community. read more
