We value our customers but not on weekends or for emergencies. Having paid them $1,400 about 6 months ago for new springs, cables and straightening a bent track, today when I needed them I was hung up on. In addition they wouldn't even let me speak to a technician, which tells me that they weren't even working today despite being told they were booked for the day. Today the door jumped the tracks and cable came off the end wheel. Since their parts failed I asked for a refund on the parts since they couldn't help service me before leaving town tomorrow and having to leave with a garage door unable to open or close (stuck in the half way open position). I purchased a full garage door from 1st Rate / The garage door 3 months ago and paid $1800 in May. They replaced a 2 car garage door and replaced a motor in which my son purchased and they installed. Thursday 08/01/24 I'd arrived home and opened my garage, the wire snapped, causing the rollers to come off track and several fell off,the weight of the garage came down hard on impact and damaged the rods and now the garage will not close. I have called the company several time, they are refusing to repair, because they are saying its out of warranty and then they came back and said I did something to cause it to snap and it my fault! They gave me the run around and wouldn't fix my garage door Yes, I do have the invoice. On Friday they sent out some tech to fix they garage, but they refused because they said I would have to pay because my warranty expired and it was pasted 3 months. The guys left without fixing the garage and when I called them asking to speak with someone about this issue on Friday, I was told to call back on Monday 08/5. The mistreatment was horrible. DO NOT use this company. Last Dec 2021 they installed an undersized spring. In order to compensate for their poor work, they adjusted the opener. By 6 mos out, the door was making a horrible noise, they sent a tech who recommended other work that had nothing to do with fixing the problem. I declined that recommendation. 9 months to the day, the cables were falling off and it was close to cracking the panels. I had to have the original work corrected by another company. Following the outrageous repair charges I contacted multiple competitors in the area to investigate prices. I discovered that 1st Rate's prices are basically double the competition. My $1,135 bill ( 2 springs & 10 rollers) was quoted at an average of $550 by others. I called 1st Rate and talked to Stacy (sp) and she defended their pricing as she read the invoice. She mentioned "Lifetime" warranty parts but my invoice received day of service says "No Warranty" on parts. She forwarded a copy and guess what, it says Lifetime Warranty? Interesting how this omission could decrease profit at a later date if known. Very deceptive business practice. I will say the techs sent were very nice. Reading another recent review looks like they overcharge others as well. $1,000+ seems to be their ridiculous fee for standard garage door repairs. read more

They do not answer their phone as 1st Rate. I had to ask for the name of their company. . Our garage door stopped working and yes they sent someone out right away, which was good. However he told us that the gear was broken and the whole box had to be replaced with outrageous estimate of $1300. Gave him $40 for service call. Said he would send a receipt and estimate by email. We called Overhead Door for second opinion. They said the gear could be replaced for around $250 but were having a hard time finding the part since the unit was 20 years old. We decided to go with a new unit after all. Overhead Door did a great job for $540. When we called 1st Rate Garage Door about the receipt they told us that they were scheduled to come back out this next Friday. They replaced our garage door and said the parts had a 1-year warranty. These same parts started going out after 3 months. I called the first company that came up because my daughters car was stuck in the garage. The gentleman arrives and we go in the garage my instincts told me that I was about to get taken advantage of. He charged me $631 to replace the springs and he said that it really needed double springs. I was livid because I knew this was double the price. Then they charged me $20 to pay with a card. This company is advertising on their website that they have 1000 five star reviews when they don't. They are advertising that they are accredited through the BBB and they are not. I had requested that they give me a quote. They showed up at my home when I was not there and told my wife that they were there to install a garage door opener called Guardian. My wife could not get in touch with me and allowed them to install. I was upset, but given that the equipment was already in I just paid them to avoid any conflict. Three months later the garage door opener broke away from the garage door. The garage door nearly fell on top of my wife. When I arrived home I went to look at the damage. What I found shocked me. The person who installed my garage failed to align the opener with the welded on attachment portion. Instead of fixing the alignment he placed two screws into my garage door frame. The only thing connecting the garage door to my garage door opener were the rivets on the screws. My children, wife, and myself have walked under this garage multiple times. Each time we were at risk to being hit by the garage releasing. I contacted this company and they refused to provide free labor to correctly install my opener saying that the warranty on labor had expired. I remembered that they had listed the BBB insignia on their website. I contacted the BBB and they have informed me as of today 08/28/2019 this business is not accredited through them. My visiting 80 yr old father called 1st Rate to come put our wonky garage door cable back on track. (I, the homeowner, was away- reduced to observing this drama on the security cams.) Chris, the technician, arrived promptly, which was great. The first red flag happened when he quoted us over $100 to "disengage the door from the motor" (pull the cable from the motor in order to lower the door manually) When my dad balked Chris immediately said he could waive that charge. Next shock came when Chris quoted $350 for a "crashed" door. (Our door wasn't "crashed". Nothing was bent. No springs, rails, or cables were broken, NO parts were replaced) He also used scare tactics telling my Dad that the garage door is one of the most dangerous things in your home. (I'm 53 hrs old. As a kid I used to be the garage door opener It's not that dangerous) He also said we're paying for his expertise and specialty tools. (Fair enough- my father is a handyman, has the exact tools Chris used but obviously doesn't bring them each time he comes to stay with me. Chris asked my dad "Well If you have the tools then why didn't you do it yourself?") Chris proceeded to "disengage the door from the motor", lowered the door, & rewound the cable. It took 15 minutes. Once again, no parts were replaced. $350. I've called around to other overhead companies and it looks like this is approximately twice the cost of everyone else. We truly don't begrudge any business fair charges for their work. Because they responded so promptly to our call Dad had a $50 tip ready for the technician. But $350 for $95-150 job just seemed excessive. From what I observed on the cameras it looked like the technician knew that we needed the garage door fixed quickly, assumed Dad didn't know how to do it, didn't have the physical ability to fix it, and took full advantage of the elderly. Chris explained that Dad signed the paperwork, so that was that. The 1st Rate customer service rep told me that this is "just what they charge", and "comparison shopping is up to the customer". Their website says they're listed on Better Business Bureau- but they are NOT. Customer service rep said he didn't know anything about that because he's not in the marketing department. Buyer beware! If you have lots of money to throw away call 1st Rate Garage Doors, otherwise literally ANY OTHER OVERHEAD DOOR COMPANY will be cheaper and more helpful. We won't ever be using 1st Rate Garage Doors again. read more
